>> reporter: good morning. that oak fire dangerous is at 0% containment right now. there is some good news. winds in the county are not expected to be high today which should make it easier on firefighters. however, hot, dry weather will continue to pose a challenge. this fire already burned through 17,000 acres and right now it's not far from yosemite national park. this morning as the heat wave blankets the country, dangerous fire raging in california. hot and dry conditions are feeding the flames of the fast moving oak fire which is quickly spreading. >> the fire has gained exceptional acreage. >> it is forcing thousands to evacuate from their homes in mariposa county. >> this worries people. you can look and see all the people, you know what i mean? i know they want to be home. >> reporter: and overnight, firefighters battling the

rapidly blaze outside yosemite national park after weeks after a fire threatened the sequoia trees. california's governor declaring a state of emergency over the oak fire and fema is joining the efforts to stop the flames. it comes as a brutal heat wave still has millions of americans searching for relief. >> trying to chill in the heat. it's kind of hard. >> reporter: over the week sweltering temperatures reaching record highs across the northeast. newark, new jersey, breaking triple digits for five days in a row. this weeks long heat wave disruptive and deadly claiming at least five lives so far, including a 22-year-old hiker in south dakota, who officials say died from suspected dehydration and exposure. in boston the mayor extending the nearly weeklong heat emergency through today. the city's annual triathlon postponed. al gore kag calling it a global emergency. >> if we got the true netzero, the temperatures on earth would

stop going up with a lag time of as little as three to five years. >> reporter: headaches from this heat wave have included amtrak slowdowns and in philadelphia we saw a public pool having to limit capacity. now the pacific northwest gets a taste and in parts of washington state today, we could see temperatures hitting 115 degrees. the savannah? >> jesse, thank you. >> let's check out the forecast here. there is a rumor there is relief in sight. good morning. >> good morning, ladies. >> it's not just a rumor. some areas are getting relief today across parts of the northern plains. but in the meantime, 49 million impacted by the heat the southern plains and pacific northwest is going to get a heat wave in the northeast, of course, right around here we're still going to see 90-degree temperatures today there's a cold front coming bringing relief to cincinnati today with the mid-80s st. louis around 81. but it's still really hot south of the front from raleigh to

atlanta and, yes, d.c. with a heat index of 105 today. so it's still pretty hot but there's going to be 80s in new york city tomorrow we're thankful for that here 70s up in portland and 80s from pittsburgh to st. louis. still hot, though, down towards charlotte. the heat index at 101 degrees and nashville at 102 these are the late week high temperatures across the region for wednesday to friday. so chicago is better in the 70s. columbus, ohio, around 80. better in d.c. and new york city 80s instead of 90s still in the 90s down around raleigh and nashville, also. that's typical summer weather there. it is still hot across some of the southern states. it looks like there's a cold front that's coming that will bring that relief. however, along with that the chance for severe thunderstorms. we had a few yesterday in parts of the northeast already getting storms around albany and down to state college and back towards pittsburgh. that's moving towards new york city and d.c. and parts of the northeast for later today.

on the back side of that is when it gets a whole lot better savannah >> leave it to janice huff to bring good news. thank you, janice. this morning there are new developments in the january 6th investigation. committee vice chair liz cheney saying the committee will consider a potential subpoena for ginni thomas, the wife of supreme court justice clarence thomas senior washington correspondent hallie jackson joins us. hallie, how likely we'll see ginni thomas testify >> reporter: probably likelier than a couple months ago but not a done deal yet. as for the question what do they want to see? they want to talk with her about the messages between ginni thomas and former chief of staff mark meadows in which she questioned the results of 2020 they wantot al tk about communications between her and john eastman, who was widely considered the architect of this plot to steal the election remember, thomas has acknowledged being at at least some of the january 6th rally on that day here is how congresswoman liz cheney, the vice chair of this january 6th committee, described

this push to try to talk to thomas watch. >> the committee is engaged with her counsel. we certainly hope that she will agree to come in voluntarily, but the committee is fully prepared to contemplate a subpoena if she does not >> reporter: let's be clear here fully prepared to contemplate a subpoena certainly doesn't mean they're ready to issue a subpoena, but it is a significant acknowledgement from one of the key members of the committee here thomas has said last month she couldn't wait to clear up misconceptions, but her attorney has pushed back against the committee saying it needs a better justification to talk with her we should note thomas has said she and her husband, obviously supreme court justice clarence thomas, don't talk about work. they keep those two things separate this is certainly an avenue to watch, savannah.

>> nbc's kathy park is there at rockaway beach in queens. good morning. >> reporter: hey, guys, good morning. that's right. well, the good news here the beach is back open for swimming but comes with the warning, encouraging people to only get out in the waters between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and when a lifeguard is present. that's because of recent shark sightings in the area. experts say, look, sharks just aren't that into us. they are nearing the shore because it appears conservation efforts are working.ly two doze sightings off cape cod, some st. in alabama and south carolina a pair of sharks seen swimming just feet from the beach. and in california surfers getting uncomfortably close to what appears to be a large shark. >> it's massive. oh, my god. >> reporter: this following a rash of shark attacks of new york's long island. at least six people bitten in

the last three weeks alone. >> we were joking about sharks actually, and then it got me. >> reporter: 16-year-old max haynes was surfing off fire island with a friend when he was attacked. jaws clamping down on his foot leaving a nasty gash. >> i felt on my foot like a bear trap just get me from below and hard. it felt like it broke my foot. >> reporter: experts say the long island shark attacks may be explained by a nursery of sand tiger sharks just off the coast and a large school of bait fish they feed on. >> the sharks mistake the people for the food that they're after. >> reporter: new york's governor now ramping up the use of drones for shark surveillance. >> if we have a sighting or potential sighting, we're able to pop that drone up in a matter of minutes and then make a decision on whether or not we feel it's safe enough to open up the water. >> reporter: while sightings can be scary experts say in most encounters sharks often ignore us. >> we have footage of juvenile

white sharks up to 8 or 9 feet long swimming right underneath surfers who never knew they were there. >> reporter: many communities not taking any chances launching extra measures to make sure it's safe to go in the water. and it's not just sharks shaking things up off the coast this summer. in plymouth, massachusetts, this weekend a humpback whale caught on camera breaching the water and landing on a boat. authorities reporting there were, thankfully, no injuries. >> oh, wow. that video. so, kathy, you mentioned sometimes sharks mistake swimmers for prey. so how do we avoid that? >> reporter: yeah. so that's a great question, hoda. if you do plan on going out into the water try not to splash around too much because that could actually attract a shark thinking you are wounded prey and also if you're wearing a lot of jewelry, do not go into the water with all that jewelry
