right now. an explosive, fast-moving wildfire still burning out of yosemite. while it's hundreds of miles away, we may still feel the effects in the bay area. our team is tracking those conditions. county and local efforts to expand testing, vaccination cites, and education. >> out of vaccines. the problem forcing one bay area clinic to shut down again as monkeypox cases continue to rise . and a key interest rate

hike decision coming this week and the impact it will have on those trying to make it in the bay. this is today in the bay streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online . good tuesday morning and thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez >> i'm marcus washington. let's get you started. there's a lot to talk about. we begin with that firefight underway near yosemite national park. and this morning the oak fire has scorched more than 17,000 acres and is 16% contain. >> 10 homes are already lost and officials say extremely dry conditions and high wind continue to challenge firefighters. however, they are optimistic that could have full containment by the end of the month. we have the latest from the fire lines. >> reporter: the fire in mariposa, california, just outside of yosemite national park is still on the move. at last check, 70,000 acres were destroyed and the blaze

was 10% contained but there's more than 2000 firefighters on the front lines trying to protect thousands of structures. you can see the damage out here is fairly extensive. when the blaze came through the neighborhood, it torched and integrated everything in its path. the blaze was moving at break neck speed. coming up on the today show we have the latest including sound from victims who lost everything in the blaze the question now is will they ever rebelled and what direction is a fire now moving. we will have answers. >> and we will speak with him later but we also want to check in with meteorologist vianey arana who is tracking these conditions and the air quality. >> we are in peak 2 fire season and this climate change is making the fire season longer and more intense. and some of the local impact is the air quality advisory. that was extended. originally set to expire yesterday but was extended because depending on the direction of the wind and the

fuel in the fire, we could see smoke drifting from mariposa county to the upper air as it moves west. as i move to satellite radar, i want to show you the smoke traveling. it looks like it will stay high above, not necessarily at the surface. right now satellite radar, you can see we have moisture and activity pushing in from the desert southwest. this is parking isolated thunderstorm activity. you can see we have lightning strikes reported through contra costa county and light showers pushing in through there and also through stuff like tahoe. we will not really see a tunnel rain but the concern for lightning is there because of how dry it is. some not so great news this morning. making it in the bay is not expected to get easier anytime soon because the new economic numbers released this week

could give clues as to whether the country is near or already in a recession. consumers are already paying more for rents, food, clothing, gasque, and president biden is downplaying recession fears saying it's not a done deal. rejection is in washington with more on the key fed decision expected today. >> reporter: good morning. president biden is trying to remain optimistic that this as all eyes remain on the economy. the fed is expected to once again raise interest rates as inflation continues to have more and more americans re- spending 40 year inflation is forcing families to cut back spending from the gas pump to the grocery store. >> now it back to paycheck to paycheck and watching to make sure were not going into overdraft >> reporter: with growing concerns over the economy's health, president biden recovering from covid remains optimistic. >> were not going into a recession in my view.

the employment rate is still one of the lowest we've had in history. >> reporter: second-quarter gdp numbers do thursday could signal the economy shrank two quarters in a row, typically a warning sign of a recession. the treasury secretary janet yellen said we are not there yet. >> this is not an economy that's in recession, but we are in a period of transition in which growth is slowing, and that's necessary and appropriate. >> reporter: the fed is expected to raise interest rates another three quarters of a percentage point to tame inflation, but some of fear it could be too much pick >> there's a risk the federal reserve raising these rates could create a recession . >> reporter: with family budgets stretched then, places like food banks are doing their best to offset rising costs. >> they are just really on the edge and having a hard time making ends meet. >> reporter: despite suffering financial hardships, there are

some economic bright spots. consumers are still spending and employers are still hiring. in washington, brie jackson. san francisco is unable to keep up with the exploding demand for monkeypox vaccines. as soon as a batch comes in, it's gone at one clinic and as a result the doors will be closed once again this morning. ginger conejero saab is in san francisco. anyone looking for a vaccine, what choices do they have right now? >> reporter: well, you do still have choices out there but experts say you need to be patient and check with your local public department of health because vaccine supply discount very county to county. in san francisco it's not the news we want to hear. the clinic at sf general is closing its doors after handing out 550 vaccines yesterday because it's out of supply. ancisco has not been informed

by the federal government of the monkeypox vacc to date, only 7800 doses have been allotted to san francisco, of which 262 doses were donated from san mateo county. sfdph requested 35,000 doses. there are other places in the bay area giving out vaccines. burnley is providing hundreds of vaccine through the steamworks baths on fourth street which distributes doses at noon on wednesdays . california lawmakers including senator scott weiner are doing what they can to push for emergency take money to deal with monkeypox but the senator looks to raise awareness and focus efforts on testing and vaccines. >> and help fund county local efforts to expand testing, vaccination cites, in education outreach because a lot of people still, they medically have heard of monkeypox. they don't really know much about it.

>> reporter: there are efforts outside of local and state governments to learn more about the spread of monkeypox. stanford is testing bay area wastewater which is a quicker response than testing to see which communities need more focused. we will learn more about that in the next hour. >> thank you. we will be watching for that . happening today, a newcomer larger reward is expected to be announced to track down the killers of an oakland rideshare and food delivery service driver. surveillance video shows the moment patrick fong was shot and killed as he sat in his car on the morning of july 17th on 13th avenue in little saigon. right now there is a $12,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. the oakland chinatown chamber of commerce plans to add more money to the amount . jovani plans to clear a northbay homeless encampment suddenly on hold. teens were supposed to remove everyone today or ask everyone

to leave from the trail along highway 12 between santa rosa and sebastopol. last week they started voluntarily asking people to relocate and helping them do that but a judge granted a temporary injunction blocking the plan and ordered a hearing for tomorrow. let's take a live look outside. that is san francisco. and the fog has been sticking around all week making the vision we see in san francisco not so clear. meteorologist vianey arana has been tracking what we can expect what you did tell us i thought was interesting is the fog is protecting us from that smoke from the fire. >> but into the afternoon when it clears out is when you state relationship with carl but we do love him in the summer. this is very typical san francisco weather but what we were looking at since yesterday is that moisture from the desert southwest we were seeing how it played out when it came to pushing north and we do have

activity on radar. we have isolated scattered showers blessing to the east bay and we could see the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm popping from the central coast into parts of the interior/concorde area. you can see on the radar it's showing up in the sierra as well. now let's get a check of the gas prices. >> we are trying to track these prices as we look around the bay. let's look toward half moon bay where we will start at the interstate gasoline on kelly avenue. $5.34 a gallon. in san francisco, all-star station on cesar chavez, $5.19. in hayward, it's $5.15 at the costco on hathaway avenue. good values just below $5.50 a gallon dominating these maps as we look toward the start of the commute around

up. a calm drive. looking at fremont. headlight southbound into silicon bailey. tail lights heading toward hayward and toward the bay bridge. we will check on the routes coming up. very happy tuesday to you. markets may suffer a bit today after walmart had bad news for investors. but really this is good news for us the chain said it had to lower prices to draw down inventory rarely do we hear of prices going down. alphabets, the parent company of google, reports profits after the bell, as does foster city's visa. and good news if you have student loans. the biden administration has instructed loan managers not to contact people who owe money about the upcoming return of payments. student loan payments were suspended during the pandemic. they are supposed to return in a few week many hope washington will just forgive the student loans . tesla filed financial

papers that indicate the company is in negotiations with the federal government over accusations of rampant racism at its factory in fremont. this is key. the filing said the feds came to the same conclusion an earlier state of california investigation came to. that things are bad at the factory. state fair unemployment board said black workers are subjected to racial slurs and discriminated against in job assignments, discipline, pay and promotion creating a hostile work environment. tesla denies those accusations. some people calling for a boycott of the streaming service, hulu, because it said it won't run some democratic political ads claiming the service quashed at that bring up topics like gun control, abortion, climate change. in large groups like the democratic governors association have written letters of complaint. we sent out a new episode of our podcast, sand hill road.

we have a lot going on in weather. we have the fog protecting us from the smoke. and it does. the factor it plays when it comes to the smoke come if you look at this camera, is it helps the smoke stay high above gliding over the fog protecting us from those particles coming down and impacting us at the surface. it will be something we are looking out for. satellite radar showing us this moisture that pushed overnight. this is what we were looking for. pushing to the north and we do see some scattered showers. there is some wet pavement but we are watching for lightning strikes and that will be the biggest concern. you guys know we are really dry out there so any form of lightning could easily start a fire. overnight we saw that move-in but like will happen by 1:30. notice the rain chances move out and we keep the fog on the coastline and look at the sierra. the sierra is looking for a

chance of an isolated thunderstorm through the afternoon. if you have plans to travel to the lake tahoe area, take that into account when you are out and about. as far as the smoke advisory, it did extend into today but it looks like a lot of that smoke will stay high above. but even then be mindful of the hayes. the road tog great right now with green centers on the peninsula and thck something atypical even though we have usual slowing from the altimont, a note for folks in the area of discovery bay and toward antioch, we are looking at byron highway hit with some light rain overnight answer antioch, maybe some drizzle so keep that in mind. and also we are hearing about lightning strikes it if you have any pictures, send them in to vianey . some of this green highlighting but we have no problem toward the bay bridge

complexes tell us they are worried about huge rent increases next week. >> consumer investigator chris chmura team is looking for protection under the state rent cap and they found something else. >> on the surface the state brent l capps rent increases to 10% over 12 month. but these tenants at antioch apartment complex agnoste notices with increases as high as 30%. they tell us they don't know how they will make those payments. >> some of my friends have plans to move. if the rent increases don't stop, my family will have to move as well. >> how can the landlord raise the rent 30% when there's a statewide 10% cap? it turns out there are exceptions including an exception for affordable housing. who else is exempt? what will happen to these tenants and what her options to fight back? tonight at 11:00 we will dig into all of that. it's a story we think all renters need to see.

healthcare workers plan to rally against today and amazon response to concerns personal data it may be at risk . this is today in the bay streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. good morning to you on this tuesday. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> tran40. we have a lot to get to but first at 5:30. the latest on the wildfire burning near yosemite that had spread to 17,000 acres and this morning containment is at 16%. >> 15 homes have been damaged or destroyed and hundreds are under evacuation orders. all that smoke is blowing i will wait impacting bay area air quality and we have team coverage this morning. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking conditions. >> but first let's start with bob redell who is life with the bay area smoke advisory. >> reporter: good morning. yes.

the vianey arana has extended this air quality advisory . we reported on this yesterday. they have extended it through tomorrow because concerns of the oak fire which is burning in mariposa county. incidentally, as a result of the oak fire and other wildfires in recent years, california has some of the worst air quality in the country. according to the air-quality life index put up by the energy policy institute at the university of chicago, this report found in 2020, 19 california counties ranked in the top 20 nationwide for the most polluted counties. none of the counties were in the bay area. they were in the sierra foothills and the central valley. california's central valley comedy particulate pollution levels, they found that they exceeded national and international standards. here is a great visual as to why. on the left side you can see satellite photo of the oak fire. that is from friday. on the right side you see

yesterday and you can see a long plume of smoke traveling north for hundreds of miles in the sierra nevada. law enforcement and firefighters have told hundreds of people in the path of the oak fire to evacuate . firefighters from oakland and fremont have joined the fight. cal fire santa clara unit sent 52 firefighters. alameda county fire behind me sent a strike team of 10 members. bay area agencies say don't worry that there will be enough fighters around to cover if there's trouble at home. >> county fire stations are all fully staffed so the community will not feel the strain at all. we are looking for relief firefighters because everything is spread thin. we are dealing with covid and also dealing with fatigue. >> reporter: as we reported yesterday, many bay area firefighters can expect to be at the oak fire for two weeks. back to air-quality. if you want to check the air

quality in your neighborhood, we have clinton avenue to that on our website, nbcbayarea.com. let's head over to meteorologist vianey arana tracking weather conditions an air-quality around the oak fire. >> it's really important to check locally because anytime the wind changes, it could create small pockets of unhealthy air quality. even though it may not be unhealthy everywhere, it could be where you are so check that out. when it comes to the air quality advisory, lot of that has managed to stay aloft, which means high above. i want to show you pump perspective what that means. that is the smoke and the hayes . the orange skies you can see they are coming you can see the plume and the color changing. what you see at the surface if i push this forward, the upper air smoke aloft compared to the smoke at the surface. you can see a lot of that smoke

is staying east versus over our area. even then there are some areas through the northbay enter the east bay, this is the smoke you breathe, and you can see all lot of that managing to stay further north. even then, when you look at the numbers in mariposa county, the orange and yellow, look at that . it goes into the hundreds when it comes to unhealthy. we're watching that but i note someone watching the roads and we saw some activity on radar and joe ducey some on the roadways. >> you're looking above and i'm looking at but combining the two get traffic conditions. san jose looks great. we do have some slowdown at the aero. here is 101 a typical slower spot. you see the upper right-hand corner here, the green highlighting. we have a damp roadway registering on the road weather index and that's where there

could be lighter rain toward tracy in brentwood and antioch. perhaps some across the delta in the north bay. no problems on the chp water but we will watch that as more folks are hitting the road. a little slowing out of vallejo on 37 . right now firefighters are still not saying whether they know what started a deadly house fire last night in antioch. first responders arrived around 8:00 p.m. on serpentine drive and they believe the fire started in the garage. one unidentified man died at the scene along with three dogs. a second person did make it out safely. today in san francisco, one medical healthcare worker will rally against amazon's plan to take over the company. amazon announced last week a plan to buy out one medical san francisco-based parent company for $4 billion. one medical has 200 officers in 25 u.s. markets. workers are calling for one medical shareholders to reject the plan going so far as to say they could compromise private healthcare data of clinic

members. amazon already addressing the issue in a statement it says in part, nothing about this transaction changes one medical's obligation to comply with hipaa and all their applicable laws and regulations. a painful reality is picking up again for more families struggling to make it in the bay. foreclosures. report finds the number of foreclosures so far this year is up 90% in the bay area at more than 1700 homes. some of that has to do with the expiring of many pandemic -related protection but one peninsula real estate agent told us right now there is no need to panic. >> unless they get to a point where they start adding to the inventory and creating a glut in inventory, then i don't see it playing a big factor. >> experts point out the pace of foreclosures is still well below the pace from 2019, and it's nowhere near enough to

lower bay area home prices at this time. ticking a live look at san jose as the sun >> we have. drifting smoke from nearby fires and monsoonal moisture pushing and causing some isolated showers on the interior, and temperatures. let's see how this welfare out. let's break down the hourly forecast. around 10:30 notice in livermore we have upper 60s. tracy, 74. san francisco, 60. seasonable for this time of year. if i push this forward to 3:30, some of the warmer spots will be through livermore. tracy still managing the 90s. and through the south bay, san jose at 78. probably will hit the low 80s.

san francisco will be in the mid 60s and we keep the chance of an isolated thunderstorm until midmorning and then that clears out into the afternoon. now let's get a check of the roads. >> looking really good in contra costa county. the early commute is not really kicking in for highway 4 but highway 37 , we do see sun break tapping. things are predictable for the roadways. looking at this junction project , starting yesterday and continuing for a few weeks we have construction. crews have asked you to lower speeds by 10 miles per hour for safety. he was seen signs posted. the green highlighting indicating light rain we've seen over the course of the morning to keep that in mind. let's jump down to a continuing project on eastbound 80. the right lane will be blocked as they have damage to the over crossing from last week we will talk about that because not
