wait, at the fed, understand the hardship that high inflation is causing. we are strongly committed to bringing inflation back down. and economy on the edge. the federal reserve could be poised to hike interest rates for the third time this year, but there are some big questions hanging in the balance. how the ultimate decision could affect your family budget. a day of action for an east bay neighborhood hit hard by violence. the big boost community groups will provide today for those in need. this is today in the bay streaming live on tran fort . good morning to you on this wednesday. thank you for allowing us to be part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> tran9. first things first, let's talk money. like 10 figure money.
5:01 am
>> i like the sound of that. >> hears alive look at a 7- eleven in the east bay. no one had all the numbers last night and mega millions drawing. no one hit those numbers. that means the next drawing will surpass $1 billion. we will need to turn that into mega millions. >> that's only happened once? in the u.s. twice? >> i think so. >> twice in the u.s. later on bob redell will explain why it's taking so many draws to land the winter. i can tell you. it's waiting for me to pick the right numbers. you know what? we don't have to play the lottery ticket a look at the forecast. meteorologist vianey arana has a look at that . how's it looking? >> i got you covered. i'm more of a scratcher kind of girl.
5:02 am
that's more my thing but i have not bought one of those in a while. maybe it is waiting for you, or me. let's talk about current temperatures in san jose. starting in the 60s but it is cloudy. we do have that monsoonal moisture from that system yesterday although any chance of rain is to the east. by 10:00 or 11:00 we see more sunshine and inland areas. temperatures will bump into the 70s by the lunch hour. around san francisco, carl the fog will linger longer. very typical this time of year. at 12:00 we will be in the 60s and wind speed is calm but it will get breezy again. also we do see some drizzle on the coastline so if you do notice that on your windshield this morning during your drive on the peninsula, don't worry. we are not really tracking any rain, although we do need it, and then heading into the week
5:03 am
ahead we do have some changes. i will guide you through that in a few minutes. brunch with carl. definitely further inland for the drizzle and sprinkles. we have no problem out of the altamont pass. a smooth flow of traffic with a dip in speed. earlier there was an issue on 580 as a crossed over 205 but there's not been an issue the last couple of hours through the area at a trace. there is a blue blob that appeared. there may have been some rainfall and that area. we haven't heard of any problems into chp so let's keep it that way. at speed through the south bay and the peninsula and the east bay enter contra costa county for the early start. no early slowing. we begin this hour with the fed's latest effort to tame inflation. a few hours from now it's all but certain the committee will raise interest rates again. >> this is both significant and
5:04 am
also entirely expected. >> so expect the stock market will likely move higher this morning because of the relief of getting this out of the way but if you want some tension this morning, a little bit to be a what could happen. we can point out that while everyone expects the fed to raise rates by three quarters of a percent come and theoretically surprise us and raise rates by a full 1%. unlikely but the fed is behind in its race to raise rates to fight inflation. and that's what it's all about. we know inflation is at its highest rate in 40 years and the way to fight inflation is to remove money from the economy. if the fed could take it from your wallet or your purse, it would. the next best thing is it makes it more expensive to borrow and increases the amount of money banks are required to keep in reserve.
5:05 am
if it's locked in a safe, it's not being loaned out. i like this car metaphor. the car is going to fast coming ease off the gas. less gas in the engine, the motor slows down. what the fed needs to figure out is what is neutral? what is the right amount of discouragement in the form of interest rates that will slow down the economy but not bring it into recession? federal interest rates are at 1.6% right now. neutral is probably 3.4%, 3.5%. i would love to get a loan or mortgage at 1.6%. that's a good reminder that the fed does not set interest rates on mortgages or car loan rates or credit card interest rates but they do tend to move up when the fed hikes its rate and that's why we care. but keep in mind so also do saving account rates. those go up. if you owe you pay more and if you save, you get more. >> we've had a number of interest rate hikes so far this year. will be likely get more after that? >> to get that neutral place, i
5:06 am
think so. there will be a press conference after the announcement ticket should be around 11:15 or 11:30 our time and we will find out where they go from here. while they never specify a specific number, the fed is not trying to hide this pick up anything they want americans and wall street to be prepared for this. >> thank you, scott . authorities in the east bay are looking for a man caught on camera, they say, vandalizing a bakery and assaulting workers. this is video of the incident. this happened last week at star bread bakery in pittsburg. police have identified the man as all money for now. it shows him throwing things near the register and knocking down the plexiglas this is a closer look at him. if you know where he is, pittsburg police would like to know . a life-saving program today from chp is hitting a milestone. the amber alert has been in service in california for 20 years.
