he just paid more than $40 million for a historic cliff kolber cliff top home on the carmel coast. it is the dl james house. the sandstone mediterranean castle was built a century ago by a famous architect charles green and made to resemble a castle in cornwall, england. but why is a special other than the fact that it's very beautiful? according to legend that is that medieval fortress where king arthur was conceived. >> who knows who was conceived in that home? i guess we will find out centuries from now. yeah. i know. right now it's 6:00. bracing for a new rate hike. >> we understand the hardships that high inflation is causing. we are strongly committed to bringing inflation back down.

>> the federal reserve may be poised to raise interest rates for the fourth time this year but there are some big questions hanging in the balance. how the ultimate decision may affect your bottom line. and fire crews gaining ground on the fire burning near yosemite. we have an update on the conditions crews will face today and the lingering effects we are failing in the bay area. this is today in the bay streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. an we are happy to have you with this. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm marcus washington. first let's talk money this morning. we're talking about 10 figures. this is a live look outside that 7-eleven in the east bay and this is not the place where someone hit those numbers last night in the mega millions. no one anywhere hit those six numbers. >> and that sign isn't right. it says $999 million and that's because they can't get to $1 billion on the sign.

this has only happened in the u.s. a handful of times. three times. later this morning bob redell will join us to explain why it's taken so long to land a winner . but first we are already winners because meteorologist vianey arana is with us this morning. >> yeah. i got you covered and so does the fog. covering the cities guy out there in san francisco. you can barely make out what is behind it. starting out mild in the 50s. temperatures will be the 60s this afternoon and this will shape up to be a lovely afternoon, especially for inland areas. we're talking seasonable weather. warmer through antioch in the upper 80s. enjoy the sunshine and the dry weather. most of the roadways are moving nicely but we have an issue in the north bay. big slowing on west 80 through vacaville built up past lagoon

valley road. an update from chp. two separate crashes. one involving four vehicles and the other involved five. lots of chp and lots of slowing into fairfield. past fairfield, west 80 moves slowly and predictably across the carquinez bridge the build at 37 and highway highway 4 into concord and a little slowing at the bay bridge of the incline but nothing dramatic in the south bay we are getting back to a normal pace 87 has early slowing a little before curtner into downtown and are typical slowing on 101 no ripple effect. the impacts moving smoothly for the rest of the south bay but we will see if that lasts or if there is another repercussion coming up. we begin with the latest that effort to tame inflation. a few hours from now it will be all but certain the committee will raise interest rates again.

>> this is significant and entirely expected. >> so expected that the stock market will likely move higher this morning because of that relief of getting this out of the way. if you want a little tension on your wednesday morning, it could be what could happen. we can point out that everyone expects the fed to raise rates by three quarters of of a percent. it could surprise us and raise rates 14%. unlikely but the fed is behind in its race to raise rates to fight inflation and that's what this is about we know inflation is at its highest rate in 40 years and the way to fight inflation is to remove money from the economy. if the fed could take it from your wallet or purse, it probably would but it does the next best thing and makes it more expensive to borrow and increases the money that banks are required to keep in reserve. if it's locked in a safe, it's

not being loaned out. i've always liked the car metaphor. if the car is going to fast calm i ease off the gas. less gas in the engine and the motor slows down. the fed needs to figure out where is neutral. where is the right amount of discouragement in the form of interest rates that was slow the economy but not bring it into recession? federal interest rates are 1.6% right now and neutral is that 3.4% or 3.5%. i'd love to get a loan at 1.6%. that is a good reminder that the fed does not set mortgage rates or car loan rates or credit card interest rates but they do tend to move up when the fed hikes its rates and that's why we care but saving account rates will also about. if you owe you will pay more but if you save, you get more. >> that's how it goes. this will be the fourth rate hike this year. many people are asking, will likely happen again? will we see more? payment to get to the magic

neutral place, there will be a press conference after today's announcement and we should get a feel for where they want to go from here but they are still behind which is why i was speculating what if it's a full 1%? keep in mind the fed is not trying to hide this. the heat surprising us. if anything they want americans and wall street to be prepared for its actions. >> but there are five months left in the year. thank you, scott . authorities in the east bay are looking for a man they say they caught on camera vandalizing a bakery and assaulting workers. take a look at this video of that incident. he was pretty hot. this happened last week at the star bread bakery in pittsburg police have identified the suspect. video shows the man throwing items near the restaurant and knocking down the plexiglas. police were able to give us

6:09 am
humidity and these are still favorable conditions for the fire to continue to blaze. right now we are in the 60s and if you notice we have decent humidity in the 40s but not enough overnight. at 1:00 we will be in the upper 80s for the -- oak fire area and humidity is a less than 30%. air-quality -wise, once again, that's coming up in the full forecast. we are tracking these lower gas prices, trying to get you started in san francisco. $5.35 a gallon. go to the argo on carol avenue. next is cupertino at the velero on north deanza boulevard. gas is $5.25. the best on this chart is castro valley at the stop and save at stanton avenue. gas is just $5.15 a gallon. on the roadways we have a bit of a break. an easy drive but

someone did become very rich last night when they picked five numbers come up but they did not get the mega ball. that ticket is worth $2.9 million sold in san bernardino county in the town of baker. more than $1 million tickets in california matched one or more numbers and could be worth anywhere from two dollars to $12,000. even though you do not win the big jackpot, you may have one something so double check your ticket. the winning numbers are 29, 63, 66, 7 and 60 with a megaball of 15 . i had three tickets and i got one number. that's how bad i am at this that the current mega millions jackpots is the fourth largest in u.s. history. you can see on your screen there was a $1.6 billion powerball in january 2016. a $1.5 billion mega million in october 2018 and $1.05 billion mega millions in january of
