it was nothing i have ever seen. >> bay area fire crews are fighting the fire, including an alameda county fire. they had to make a seven hour drive to join the crew. the fire is burning in klamath national forest and into the city of yreka. the two people who died were found in a vehicle in the driveway of a home, according

to the sheriff's coroner. they were clearly trying to leave. as of now, the fire is not contained on any front. 52,000 acres have burned. the county is declared a state of emergency. we know high temperatures are a problem. but, the lightning is a big problem. >> that is the other problem and there is still a chance of lightning going into the next couple of days. we have seen scattered showers and thunderstorms nearby, but also the temperatures have been heating up. today, we are headed back for the mid 80s. take a look at the wind gusts. it is still going to be pretty windy and that could make more erratic wildfire conditions for those trying to get some containment here, as well as watching out for more rain in the area and the chance of lightning as we look at the search of moisture moving all the way up to the oregon border. here, we are starting out with spotty showers in the bay area.

especially, in parts of the east bay on 680. you can see the showers moving through. for the northbay we have seen the rain on the napa-sonoma county line. some of the spots the rain is pretty light, but it may be picking up in other spots and we will be watching the south county with another search of rain headed that way. so far, i haven't seen any lightning. we will talk more about the chances of lightning in our forcast coming up in a few minutes. as five fire chris was talking about burning out of control, we will keep following that with latest updates on nbcbayarea.com. congress considering historic legislation for our climate in crisis. alive look at capitol hill where democratic lawmakers are forging ahead, as the u.s. grapples with extreme flooding in the appalachians and explosive wildfires in the west.

rise. democrats have a bill that will provide $69 billion for clean energy. if passed and signed into law it would be the largest climate investment ever taken by congress. scott? >> thank you, we appreciate you. as the nation tries to move forward out of the pandemic, there is still a major need in the public health system to get us there. a new report by the nonprofit, trust for america's health lanes chronic underfunding in creating health inequities. it is to be a contributing factor in the inadequate response to the pandemic. the nonprofit is calling for an annual $4 billion investment in the public health infrastructure. joining us now to talk more about it is the ceo of trust in america's health.

the report says lack of funding really slowed the response to the covid-19 pandemic. can you expand on that a little bit? exacerbating its impact, more particularly to low income communities and communities of color and those serving the elderly. >> the report found that funding for the public health system has not kept up with the public health needs of the nation. chronic underfunding of the public health system is really detrimental to health and well- being of all communities, as well as our nation's health maturity. we call for that increasing funding for the public health infrastructure because what we have seen over decades of time are limited investments in the infrastructure to serve the day- to-day work that public health does around the country. >> we really saw a problem in communities of color, those affecting the elderly, or low income communities, in particular. it was well evident during covid

. a lot of those communities ended up getting this virus much worse. they just didn't have some of the things that required. >> certainly, in regards to health inequities for example, in communities of color and low income communities, many of these communities are under sourced. we need to assure that workers have paid sick leave so they can take time off and not fear losing their job or losing income if they don't show up for work. ensure they can make ends meet and be given access to affordable health and not suffer from food insecurity. our health is not only tight what happened in the healthcare setting, but other resources in our communities. >> if you want to see the full interview, you can walk it on

today headed for the low 70s in berkeley. still, a wide range in temperatures. we will talk more about that. mike, where can we find lower gas prices? we are searching around and finding places where you can fill up for less. we found some in union city. the cheapest we have is the national along alvarado boulevard at $5.39 per gallon. the north bay, vallejo is $4.99 a gallon. same thing in larkspur. that location is on larkspur avenue. we have some slowing for highway 24. an earlier crash, just past this exit shown. we have slowing and there may be one lane blocked and a lot of activity. we are tracking that through the wallet interchange. once you pass the tunnel, it is like traffic. even now at 6:10 there are no metering lights at the bay

the scattered showers, we have a new wave heading from the south county over towards watsonville and hollister, approaching gilroy with light rain and moving towards morgan hill. it is moving northwards. we have two systems working together. one is a tropical storm off the coast and we also have the monsoon moisture to the east. we are in between, but still feeling very muggy this morning. this screen shows a high level of moisture that is been moving through, giving us a chance of rain in early august that has been great to see. we are hoping we don't have any lightning because we just want the rain. so far, that is what we have gotten, except for one lightning strike off the coast. if we do get more lightning, that enhances the wildfire threat is this rain will not be enough to put out any fires, and could be a big problem for the very dry vegetation. as we go towards late morning and into the afternoon, a chance

of spotty showers. look how hot it will be this afternoon with high humidity, temperatures headed up to 90 degrees. that will feel very uncomfortable. we will continue to see more humid conditions into tomorrow and martinez heads for 85 degrees. san francisco will stay in the 60s. we will see those temperatures in mountain view at 78 degrees and we will continue to see hotter weather for the inland valleys by the middle of the week. let's check out livermore because we are starting out with low 90s, today. that will reach into the mid 90s by thursday. the temperatures come down slightly for the weekend, but overall the seven day forecast shows mugginess, clouds and a chance for rain today. as it dries out, humidity levels drop and temperatures go up. for san francisco, we will see mostly upper 60s throughout the week with the low cloud fog, mist and drizzle. we have seen it all, mike. you have been watching something on the roads, as well. >> yes.

we are looking at the bay bridge and we just had the metering light turned on seconds after my last report. there is a little slowing on the incline just after the toll plaza and we will see build over there soon. 37 is holding steady, but the green is highlighting the moisture. coming across the venetian bridge you are all right. highway 24 is slow coming off the walnut creek interchange. just heading west there is slow up on the synergy drive. once you get to the tunnel and through that, everything is fine toward the bay bridge. a smooth flow of traffic around rest of the bay. a little damp showing up in the green highlighted here. as the traffic builds down here in san martin, we have slowing

new this morning, you will have to rethink your plans if you are thinking about visiting what is known as the world tallest tree. the tree was first discovered in 2006 and stands 380 feet tall. it is located deep inside redwood national forest in yreka. the national parks have closed the area surrounding the tree citing damage caused by visitors. violators will be fined $5000. the world is mourning the loss of an absolute legend in basketball whose career started right here in the bay area. bill russell led the u.s. to two straight champions. >> event went on to dominate the nba for more than a decade leading the boston celtics to 11 championships and winning

the most valuable player award five times. russell was also known for his activism off the court, as a civil rights advocate, a legacy he passed to future generations of nba players. former usf basketball coach was san francisco teenager when russell went undefeated in 1955 and 56. >> we all lost a giant, not only somebody who was one of the all-time greats on the court, but also someone that thought for racial injustice off the court his whole life. >> nba commissioner, adam silver called russell the greatest champion in all of team sports. his legacy includes the nba finals most valuable player trophy named in his honor. russell's family posted a statement. he passed away peacefully with his wife, janine by his side. he was 88 years old. our coverage on the life and

we are on every every monday through friday. thank you for joining us. >> welcome to this first day of august. we have light rain moving across the bay area this morning. in fact, i would say this is more than light. meteorologist, cary hall visit us this morning and is tracking the rain and possibly, some lightning. >> we do need the rain but we don't want the lightning. so far, the lightning has only been one or two strikes of the coast. we are seeing the rain moves through a wider swath across the bay area as we get a closer look at the george bay where we have seen the rain off and on. as you head out you will need the windshield wipers. some of the roads may be wet. we have some widespread rain coming through the santa cruz mountains, up to the south county for gilroy and approaching oregon hill in the

next few minutes. as we go into late morning and early afternoon, that is when we could see more activity in the hour by hour look. you can see yellow and heavy rain moving through parts of the south bay and east bay. as we go into the afternoon there will still be this chance and we will talk about why this is happening in a few minutes. we are seeing more slowing in the center divide in lafayette. you can see the backup coming off the walnut creek exchange. that is the stretch of 24 that will cause you slowing. everything else showing a pretty normal pattern and that is keeping the traffic at the bay bridge a little lighter. the merging lights are turned on. we have a smooth track in the south. we have a small crash in santa clara and north 101 near the airport. back over to you. starting today, san francisco's monkeypox public

health emergency takes effect. >> it comes as a new emergency assistance reports more than 300 confirmed cases. more than total and some entire states. across the u.s., just under 5000 cases are reported. we are live in san francisco this morning taking a closer look at the changes you may notice starting today. >> reporter: good morning. scott, in just several hours a monkeypox vaccine clinic will reopen once again, at san francisco general after being shut down for a week and a half because of a shortage of monkeypox vaccine. i am told they are already over 150 people camped out this morning, trying to get walk-in appointments because it has not been easy to get a vaccine appointment at some of the clinics that are reopening throughout the city, today. the city will receive over 4200 vaccines and they will be distributed throughout the clinics. if you go on the immunization

and travel website you will see places you are directed to make an appointment from the san francisco department of public health. as of friday, they cannot schedule additional appointments. while most clinics in san francisco are by appointment only, the one at san francisco general accepts walk-ins. the clinic has seen long lines and today, the same is expect did when it opens at 8:00 a.m. vaccine supply is limited at that location and i'm told they will be giving out 700 vaccines , today. the monkeypox public health announcement did not dampen activities over the weekend. festivals will continue to go. organizers emphasized monkeypox awareness and safety precautions and added more space to accommodate partygoers. >> the first thing you see when you come to the gates is the

public of health emergency tents. they are doing covid vaccines and public testing. they are doing outreach for monkeypox and that is why we have these affairs that were founded during the aids crisis to address the fact that information and communication is not always handled well. >> most risky are the things that happen after the event in private spaces when people are intimate with each other, not during the fair. >> reporter: city leaders said they need around 35,000 vaccines to meet the need in the city. so far, it has administered just under 8000 vaccines. for more information, the vaccine clinic at san francisco general will be open at 8:00 and will be open atman at noon monday through friday. >> a lot of people have been anxious to get those vaccines. thanks, ginger. happening today, two people

accused in the kidnapping of san jose's baby are expected to be back in court. the two pleaded not guilty last month. the charges of kidnapping were of kidnapping a three-month-old baby named brandon. they plotted and try to kidnap the baby at least three times before they finally pulled it off. authorities found that they be quickly and he was returned to his mother within 48 hours. a judge is deciding if there is enough evidence to go to trial. oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting a short distance from the oakland zoo. video from citizens at showed the scene yesterday afternoon. it happened on 90th avenue near olive in east oakland. the man who was shot died at the scene. right now, there is no information about possible suspects. that shooting followed an earlier one that left three people injured at an oakland technical high school. at that case, people were

concern complicating those who don't have power and water. we will show you what is making things worse. >> reporter: good morning, i am jesse kerch coming from you in eastern kentucky. this area has been devastated by flooding the death toll continues to climb as rain tapers off. however, we are expecting excessive heat in the area and there is concern from the governor how people will fair, considering that some still do not have power or water restored, including some in this area where we are now. this just one look of the devastation behind us. we have seen some harrowing scenes and the expectation is that more people will, unfortunately be found dead. we will have the latest coming up on today. >> very tragic. we are also keeping a close eye on developing news near the oregon state line in the massive fire burning in siskiyou county. it turned deadly this morning with two deaths reported.

the victims were found in a vehicle outside of a home. the mckinney fire is already the most large fire burning in the klamath national forest. we know that it will include homes destroyed along the river. evacuations are in effect for hundreds of homeowners. meteorologist, cary hall has been tracking the conditions. we even have lightning possible in the bay area. what situations are the firefighters facing? >> it is been so explosive. it happened so fast. we take a look at the weather conditions as we still see gusty winds. as we go through the day, hour by hour around that area by the mckinney fire, wearin the 70s and head for the mid 80s. we are seeing some rain headed up in that direction and that could make the fire and wind more erratic. we are also watching out for

the chance for lightning. so far, we haven't seen much lightning in the bay area, just scattered showers as you wake up and head out. one off the coast. the conditions this morning are very wet and the low clouds continue over san francisco. we will continue to monitor for the chance of lightning. right now, we are looking at a slower drive around highway 24. look at this, more light rain showing up on the roadways. that is accented by the green highlighting. highway 24 had a crash in the center divide and that is a big distraction in the commute direction coming off the walnut creek just past the exit. as you travel toward the tunnel it is slower but past their it is better. the metering lights are on and that is pretty typical for the morning commute. for this evening, just a note

there may be hit or miss showers moving through with temperatures moving into the upper 70s for today. we are looking at a chance of lightning and we will talk about that in the forecast. a look at the peninsula north of 101 and there is traffic moving slowly in both directions. northbound may be heading towards some slowly moving traffic and we will track that. we will have more information coming up. happening now, nancy pelosi is at the start of a world wind trip across asia. she arrived early this morning at her first stop in singapore. these are folders of the meeting with leaders there. it is not clear if she still plans to make a stop in taiwan. monica albert explains the international sticking point that is putting a major screen and strain on america's already tense relationship with china. >> reporter: speaker pelosi left an overseas trip to asia this weekend, leading congressional delegation to singapore, south japan, malaysia and didn't make any note of the

the wide-ranging temperatures. it heats up as you make your way inland. the humidity continues. so, when you combine 90 with high humidity, you break out in a sweat in an instant when you step outside. it gets hotter on wednesday, but this will be with the humidity starts to drop and we see the temperatures heading up. santa rosa will go from upper 70s to upper 80s between wednesday and thursday. the forecast is going to be a muggy start to the week, but the temperatures come up a few days as it dries out. we are looking at more of the same to the weekend with san francisco seeing the low clouds, mist and drizzle and highs in the upper 60s. i am tracking two accidents. there is a crash in san mateo. we are starting to see a little bit of slowing in south lake. this is a critical part of the peninsula. as the volume built north of the san mateo bridge and joining

welcome back. we are looking at the top stories on today in the bay. we will start with the out-of- control wildfire near the oregon border. >> it is sad to hear that the mckinney fire burning near the california-oregon border is now, a deadly fire. it is also the state largest. the two people who died were

found in a vehicle in the driveway of the home. we have to assume they were trying to get out. 52,000 acres have burned so far, and the fire is not contained on any friend. governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency. the fire is burning in the klamath national forest and into the city of yreka. fire crews are helping in the firefight, including fire crews that of been diverted from other fires. after a seven hour drive they joined other fire crews. weather is a very big factor in this firefight. the winds are a problem and lightning is an ongoing concern. the u.s. forest service is waiting for smoke conversion to clear so they can finally put more aircraft back up over the firefight. meanwhile, san francisco's monkeypox public health emergency takes effect this morning. city leaders made that declaration last week. later this morning, the

monkeypox vaccine clinic at general reopens. it has been closed since last monday after running out of supplies. it will be open from 8:00 a.m. until noon every day from friday until the doses run out. so far, the city reports more than 300 confirmed monkeypox cases. the latest shipment contains 4000 doses, but leaders say at least 35,000 are needed. so far, the city has administered less than 8000 shots. right now, only the highest risk people are eligible. taking a quick look outside over san jose we have a cloudy start to the day. >> we see a little bit of light rain on and off and that continues as you get ready to head out. we have seen rain on the radar for the north bay and it is starting to build in part of the east bay. make sure you have the nbc bay area app . they cleared the lanes. the tow truck arrived. highlighting dominates the area
