can expect. >> so strange, humid, temperatures late in the day go up and some rain across parts of the bay area. this morning it is dry so we take a live look outside in san francisco as you head out for your commute in antioch, we start out with temperatures in the upper 60s. a warm start to the day. a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures heating up quickly, headed towards the upper 80s at noon, and it will be a hotter afternoon. concord reaching 93. and we will see low 80s in san jose. for the north bay we will see temperatures in the mid-80s this afternoon. once again a little bit hotter and muggy like yesterday. we'll talk rain chances in the forecast. it is all clear for interstate 680. spent yes the crash has cleared from 680 which is good, there was a quick traffic break and everything is off to the shoulder. there may still be a little bit of activity. activity out of the altamont pass for west 580 and still register with no sensor data

through the canyon but it should be picking up right this second and we should see green through this area in just a few minutes. everything is at speed, commute just starting to wake up in the crash is registering on the grid, north side of the golden gate, i will double check the live camera coming up. back to you. today in just a few hours the two suspects accused of plotting to kidnap a san jose baby will be back in court once again. >> now we have a first hit at a possible motive, today in the bay kris sanchez is a look at the one in this bizarre case. >> reporter: it continues to be bizarre we now know those two suspects face additional charges as they head toward their preliminary hearing, which is expected to happen in just a few days. yesenia ramirez and jose portillo were in court again yesterday as a san jose police officer testified about what could be the possible motive.

the officer detailed an interview with a man that claimed yesenia ramirez told him they had a baby together, and that was the reason that baby brandon was kidnapped and that ramirez recruited her alleged co-conspirator to take the baby from a baby family they knew from church. they were charged with a fourth charge of attempted kidnapping. the prosecutor isn't commenting at this point until after the preliminary hearing in a few days. but the attorney for yesenia ramirez said he expected more charges. >> it is an interesting addition but not surprising, since they've added these attempted charges along the way. >> you might recall the surveillance video shows jose portillo taking baby brandon away in a baby carrier purchased ahead of time. the baby was taken from his grandmother's home while she unloaded groceries, along with yesenia ramirez it given her a ride to the store and we expect

that baby brandon's mother will testify in the trial. in san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you so much. new developments this morning, tied it to the gilroy garlic pear mass shooting in 2019. two weapons makers are facing new lawsuits. three people died in 17 others injured in that rampage. the victims family members are behind the new family legal filings and they claim that sensory arms did not take efficient care to prevent misuse of the gun used in the shooting. the company hasn't publicly responded to the claims. developing right now, reaction around the globe to the death of america's most wanted terrorist. a weekend drone strike took out the leader of al qaeda, more than two decades after he helped what the 9/11 terror attacks. today in the bay's jay gray life for us on capitol hill with new details on how it happened and the plot that may have been stopped in the process. >> reporter: hello marcus, good

5:06 this morning. some of the bay area relatives of those who died nearly 21 years ago are reacting to recent news. san francisco native, but he hong, was a flight attendant on american airlines flight 11 that crash into the world trade center tower one she is now considered a national hero, and this is because she was the first to alert authorities about the hijackings. her sister tells the chronicle that the news does bring some closure, think in part, i don't know if it bin laden being killed or this guy being killed really helps heal anything because we still have a lot of questions. i'm sure it brings a lot of people closure to healing, and yes, i do find some relief. but we still need to know more about what happened. and ahead on the today show this morning, national security advisor jake sullivan sits down with savannah guthrie. they discuss what this means nearly one year following the

u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan coming up on the today show at 7:00, right after us on today in the bay. this morning governor nixon pushes for more monkeypox boxing and he is in a state of emergency hoping to get federal government to increase supply. the declaration allows emergency personnel to administer the vaccine and makes it easier to expand and test up testing sites. san francisco state senator scott weiner says the move sends a strong message, but it only does so much. >> unfortunately, this declaration will not expand the supply of vaccines, only the federal government can do that. >> yesterday on the midday newscast we showed you the long lines that wrapped around blocks at sf general, following news that 4000 additional monkeypox vaccines were recently acquired by the city. the clinic reopens at 8:00 this morning for walk-ins and appointments. contra costa county confirms it has detected that a group of mosquitoes carrying the west nile virus. the county says it is possible that marsh fire has become a breeding ground and workers in

the county's mosquito vector control district made that discovery. so they now closely are monitoring the area, and with the help of a drone, so far there are no plans to spray the area. developing now, the mckinney fire developing near the california and oregon border is the largest in the state so far this year. it is scorched more than 55,000 acres in siskiyou county. 72 people have died and so far the fire is 0% contained firefighters from oregon are joining in the fight. light rain is tempered by the fire yesterday, we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall is you been monitoring and certainly the rain was helpful. >> it is and we are monitoring it there would be lightning around the area but so far we've not seen any. let's get a look at the radar this morning and that area

around yreka. we see some of the showers that do continue in the area, even this morning, as we are getting high humidity, which slows the spread of the fire, good news here, and once again we've not seen any lightning strikes. i want to show you our temperatures and what we expect throughout today, starting out in the mid-to-upper 60s, headed for the mid-80s today and it will not be as windy, but we know around the fire can create its own weather conditions in the area. we are still getting the surge of monsoon moisture today with the remnants of a tropical system as well, we will continue to see the moisture streaming and stay but will be drying out tomorrow, we'll talk about what it means for the bay area coming up, mike where can we find lower gas prices? >> checking around the bay and within, around mill valley we found gas for $4.89, which is below five dollars, we like that. a little more along the coast, san francisco we found gas for five dollars 09 so a shade over the five dollar mark, and in richmond, the east bay out of harbor way, again below five

forecast coming up. >> the incline here on the san mateo bridge traveling west with taillights heading over the high-rise, no issues and a very easy and smooth ride. across 92, we will check on other spots today coming up. a very happy tuesday to you. stocks are a bit under threat this morning as we watch what is happening in taiwan but more about that in a second. look at ford. it is up again. july was great for ford. ford shares were up more than 30% in that month alone. 14% just last week. now, oracle is said to be laying off workers. we have not seen a worn notice from oracle to the state of california, they may not have taken place yet. oracle, which is to be headquartered on the peninsula is trying to compete with salesforce. we understand from reports that most of the layoffs come from

the divisions most similar to salesforce. now when we talk about layoffs, keep in mind there are more than 11 million open jobs in the united states. jobs without workers we will get the latest job opening numbers this morning at 7:00. and then the big jobs report, the number jobs created on top of that on friday. so this is why it is hard to say whether america is in or approaching a recession. yes we have seen two declining quarters, but we have historic employment and wages are up. stock markets all over the world a little unnerved by nancy pelosi's planned arrival in taiwan. these are pictures of the speaker earlier in her asian tour. we understand there are activities planned for this evening on the island estate, right now it is 8:16 p.m., and china is very angry that a top u.s. official is planning a trip, but taiwan is a democratic ally of the united states, and back at home amazon has released its latest climate

and this is also where her daughter, the horror, will be going in the fall, she will be going to spelman college, all- female college down in atlanta. congratulations to her, all of the college-bound students. >> just around the corner. >> you have to have that electric slide down. >> especially if you're going to spellman. >> kari has a look at the forecast for this tuesday, very interesting for august. >> yes it is, we have had humid weather and hot weather, cool and foggy near the coast and even a little rain in the mix. we will still see the same today as we see an increase in cloud cover as a look just to the south. most of the bay area waking up and heading out to mostly clear sky but clouds will be back. we have seen them here the past couple of days. all of this coming from the remnants of what was tropical storm frank and is reaching to the bay area boosting our

humidity and making it feel muggy and giving us a chance to have rain into today. we will start to see those spotty showers in the north day around 5:00, right in time for the evening commute, and then we will see it picking up in intensity with more scattered showers as we head closer to sunset. i expeis evening, especially if the rain is further in the distance from you. and then let's look at the temperatures, it will make you break out into a sweat quickly very much today, especially in concord where the high temperatures will reach 93 and we will see upper 70s for oakland, upper 60s around san francisco and it mostly mid-to- upper 80s in the north bay. tomorrow it is basically the same but unity will drop it will not be as muggy. values heat up on thursday, when the hotter days of the week, and we compare that's what the rest of the country is feeling, which has been pretty

hot with a heat extending all the way up to bismarck north dakota where it will be 90 for today, and highs in the 80s and 90s for much of the country. we are not only with dealing with high heat. take a look at ukiah, california. even though it will be warm and humid today, temperatures go up even more the next few days, and over the weekend we will be closer to 100, rather than low to mid 90s we've seen the past few days. our seven-day inlet forecast shows that for most of us we will be in the upper 80s, and even hotter the next few days, and the weekend much of the same with the lower humidities, sunshine in san francisco and continue to see highs in the upper 60s. mike, it looks like a calm drive through the east bay. spent yeah exactly, from the east bay towards san francisco, look at the beautiful view and we see all the city lights right now, a smooth drive with taillights and headlights coming back towards the east bay. no major issues across the

golden gate bridge. the earlier incident still on the chp blotter but i don't think it is a problem traveling north, have not seen any flowing into sausalito from the golden gate. a little glitch showing up earlier, highway 37. it is 5:21 and we will see the build off of highway 4 as well. over around oakland, not sure which direction approaching the split with the merge with 580, and in the tri-valley, a little smooth but a little blip at west 580 on the dublin interchange and i'm sure it will sort itself out, but i still have my eyes on it. next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. >> if you have had a move go south you can speak up and try to get your

>> let's talk about the forecast, meteorologist cary hall monitoring what we can expect, it will be a nice one for us? >> it will be humid today but we have a nice sunrise on the way. look at this live view in san francisco this morning to get ready to go out the door for work. looking at the trend, it does start out feeling pretty muggy. temperatures in the low 60s, a breezy northwesterly wind. we will see a mix of sun and clouds today as temperatures had for the upper 60s. and for inland areas it will be hotter over the next few days, we will continue to see the humidity levels dropping for the weekend and it is looking milder, with upper 80s. we will talk more about those details of that forecast coming up. mike, you're giving us a look at the morning commute. >> yes, at the bottom of the screen a little slowing in san jose, a couple minutes early, we have our eyes on that. meanwhile zooming into the east bay, a closer look at the maps, we will zoom into the altamont pass with westbound 205 there is a crash.

getting to the merge with 580 keeping things in the altamont pass a little easier. the other crash of the bottom is on patterson pass road eastbound out of livermore. eastbound lanes are currently blocked by a crash. not the way, with a crush on 580 that we sought eastbound getting away from the bay bridge. also it is getting out of lanes so it should not be a problem the commute to the bay bridge is moving just fine. >> thank you mike. breaking news out of oakland while you are sleeping please of us getting a deadly shooting along ransom avenue at around 11:00 last night. this is a video from lemmon avenue and brookdale park, where police say there were also reports of a person down at around the same time. so far police will only say that the man who died is from oakland. so far there is no word of any

arrests. another recent oakland shooting getting national attention. oakland police need your help to find the person or people involved in the gunfire that erupted at a recent youth football game. a young girl among those injured. >> so bob redell joins us live, concerned parents are meeting tonight i understand ? >> reporter: good morning to you laura and marcus, the oakland dynamite's, the nonprofit youth group hines at a football game, will hold a prayer circle tonight in oakland they will also meet with parents to talk about what happened this past sunday and discuss what kind of things they can do to improve security at their football games. it was this past sunday afternoon at 1:15 roughly that the oakland dynamite's who were playing another youth team from fresno. when according to the team there was an argument on the streets that spilled out onto the football field, at oakland tech school, or about 500 people were watching the game. three spectators were shot, a

man, a woman, a six-year-old girl, all taken to the hospital and at last report a stable condition. oakland police chief said many people open fire with handguns and he does not believe the shots were directed at the kids on the field. >> it makes no sense children are out here playing football, and family and friends are watching these games, and people would come armed with guns. and not just one, several people had firearms in this crowd. that is really unfortunate that they put the lives of young people and families in danger because of their selfishness, and a desire to bring these dangerous weapons into an area with children. 500 people. this could have been a horrible tragedy. it's already bad enough but it could have been much worse. >> police say they are looking through video to try to single out the suspects. there's a $15,000 reward for any information that can lead police to making an arrest and

conviction. this is the second time the oakland dynamite have witnessed street violence. last year in february of 2021, someone was shot and killed right by one of their football games. something the group witnessed according to police and the oakland dynamite posted on facebook an apology for what happened this past sunday, and reiterated their goal is to create a safe and fun environment for the youth. the dynamite will hold the prayer circle and meeting with the parents tonight at 6:00 at oakland tech school. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay . >> the chief made a good point, it should not be happening. >> issued not, bob, thank you. new development and more damage control for the san jose police doing with a new department blackeye. the latest incident involves a suspected ui crash on sunday night in downtown san jose involving an off-duty officer. to darius surrey had been on the force for three years and

the other driver in the crash is also facing dui charges. over this past year the department has seen more than its share of troubling incidents, including times of lurid behavior, and officers drunk on the job. >> this new arrest suggests this isn't sinking in with the rank-and-file officers who have continued to get in trouble with the law. >> now police say to darius surrey will not be placed on administered leaf. and this past may, chief anthony mata announced departmentwide reform plan which included more drug and alcohol testing and a wellness check in program. the san francisco school board debate possible action against one of its new trustees tonight, ann hsu has already apologized for comments she made against black and latino communities, but some say the apology doesn't go far enough. ginger conejero saab is live in san francisco this morning, and ginger , some people are demanding she step down. >> reporter: that is right,

marcus. and those people are making their voices well heard. the school board is looking to make some decision on the future of ann hsu a school board commissioner tonight, and the agenda says the board is expected to discuss, consider, and decide whether to admonish the commissioner for the recent comments she made on that survey. the agenda item says that the board leaders say quote commissioner ann hsu recently made written statements that , in the judgment of board leadership, undermine and run counter to this board's belief that we as a district are most responsible when our students fail, and that all students can succeed regardless of their race, z.i.p. code, income level, or any other factor. it goes on further that says the commissioner's comments to the contrary are hurtful and perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

the topic asked on that parent group survey had to do with challenges in educating black and brown students. her response in part answered saying quote unstable family environments, and lack of parental encouragement to focus on learning. she took to twitter to issue an apology in july saying in part that i was trying to understand and address the serious problem and seek solutions, and in so doing, i said things that perpetuated bias is already in the system. the teachers union, the san francisco naacp, and the san francisco democratic party, and several supervisors, are among those who have called or the resignation of ann hsu . there are also those more accepting of her apology, more than 300 people have signed a letter of support, and among them the chinese american democratic club, and the chinese parent advisory council. you know marcus, whatever the outcome for today's decision, and how this controversy continues to unfold, many say the biggest casualty in all of

these school board controversies are the communities, and the students the school board serves. we will continue to follow this developing story and give you the latest update. >> i'm sure this isn't over just yet, thank you so much. workers outraged over the recent closure of a south bay food production plant plan to voice their anger later today some 200 workers at the plant in san jose were told this month that amy's facility was shut down this september and they said they lost their jobs on the spot. workers tell nbc news the decision was made shortly after they voted to unionize but some also claimed they were working in unsafe conditions that amy's loosely called those allegations false and excited inflation related and other economic challenges for the closure. the san jose plant only opened last year. new images of summertime impact, the usgs is posting is latest before and after look from above lake mead, america's largest reservoir. lake mead is a 27% capacity, an all-time low. experts now fear if the drought

resist and persists the lake may drop to so-called deadpool levels. this morning heavy rain triggering mudslides in southern california. you see numerous vehicles were just stuck in the mud in the san bernardino mountains. the slides have now closed one segment of highway 38 with no timeline yet on the reopening. so far no reported injuries. that is a lot of mud. >> meteorologist kari hall is checking and tracking rain. >> has been very light for us, we will not see that, but we did see a little bit of rain yesterday so we are looking at the loop from the past 18 hours in southern california where we did see all of the storms firing up, some of them even dropped small hail. as i bring it back home we feel that humidity yesterday morning at this time there were a couple of spotty showers, but

legislation passes and makes it to the president's desk, and is of course signed, it would be the most significant investment the united states is ever made in climate change. $369 billion is what is on the table. a couple big chunks of money like $60 billion to help manufacturing industry, building solar panels and wind vehicle and fracturing industry, so building those electric cars and electric car batteries here in the united states. it is a win for the planet and ultimately a win for the economy. >> with all this being in the headlines, extreme heat being seen in places like not seen before such as the united kingdom and europe, and other headlines like the wildfire smoke and the more intense wildfire season, and more extreme flooding, this is having a real impact on people with anxiety. we know about things like seasonal effectiveness disorder, and how cloudy and cooler climates can affect how a person feels.
