there's a source that could be contributing to the outbreaks. >> a bacteria is spreading in napa county and raising concerns. the new warnings from health officials about the outbreak that killed one person. the steps leaders are taking to stop the spread. this is "today in the bay" . thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. marcus washington has the day off. we will get to the morning commute with mike but let's look at the forecast first with meteorologist kari hall who is following everything closer to the weekend. >> the weekend is almost here. here we are on thursday but the weather is pretty much the same as we wake up and had out, we are seeing the fog over san francisco. in other spots it's mostly clear but look where we are headed for today with the low humidity coming in. temperatures will get a boost in san jose heading for the

upper 80s. 91 in concord. in napa reaching 82. we will have more of this hot weather for the inland valleys but wide range in temperatures and talk more about that. mike, you were updating a crash in the north bay. >> this is the most unpleasant part of my day. someone has died. the good news as far as traffic flow all lanes have reopened. traffic is flowing smoothly. westbound 12 around west for the closure early this morning. the commute is very early. no problem coming down for the volume of traffic. we still have the closure for 84. back to you. legionnaires disease is raising concerns in the north bay because so far 12 people have gotten sick and one has

died. health leaders in napa county are narrowing in on the source of that outbreak. ian cull explains. >> reporter: zeroing in on the source. the napa county health officers identified a large air conditioning unit on the roof of the embassy suites napa valley had traces of legionella. a bacteria that causes severe pneumonia known as legionnaires disease. they believe it's the connecting factor the for 12 people in the hospital over the past few weeks. one man in his 50s die. >> this cooling tower has been taken off line which mitigates any ongoing risk to public health. >> reporter: three patients are in the hospital. one on a ventilator. none of the patients were guest at the hotel but instead neighbors who live in the surrounding area. >> if the cooling tower is contaminated with the bacteria, it can disseminate up to a mile. >> reporter: we spoke with a professor of medicine and

infectious disease expert at stanford. he says people over 50 with severe underlying conditions are most at risk and you contracted by breathing in small droplets of water in the air that contained the bacteria. >> air conditioning systems and even hot water supplies in hospitals have been identified as sources of outbreaks. >> reporter: he says it's not spread from person to person and can be treated by antibiotics when caught early. >> these units personalize depending on the concentrations of bugs that are present. people downwind from a cooling tower could be at risk. in the health officer says legionnaires is rare and usually get up to two cases per year. as for the outbreak, they are still testing other water sources in the area. >> the investigation team works with embassy suites to remediate the source and continue to work on the remediation until the issue is

resolved. >> reporter: the hotel is open and operating. we reached out to embassy suites parent company, hilton, by email but not have heard back. happening today, police will talk more about the man arrested with the pellet gun shootings. officers arrested the man on monday. police tied him to seven random pellet gun attacks. the victims suffered a collapsed lung and fractured rib. the attacks happened between april and june in san jose. developing now, bart police are proceeding a stabbing that night. officers investigated the train around 8:00 p.m. the victim did not suffer life- threatening injuries and the station is fully open again this morning. as the money -- number of monkeypox cases, there are new

concerns. people who suspect they have monkeypox are not getting tested. we look at why this could be happening. >> reporter: there are 300 86 cases of monkeypox in san francisco making up almost half of all of california's cases. while people wait in long lines to get vaccinated, the demand for monkeypox testing is low. the test involves obtaining a swab from a lesion or rash. few people are getting tested and some experts say it may be because some of you monkeypox as adisease. >> it's hard for people to come in and say i wa to monkeypox tax. by thatsang i'm worried because did xyz activities and worried about potential judgment. >> reporter: the unity center in san jose says the focus should be on fighting the virus not stigmatizing people. >> what i don't want to happen

is that monkeypox be yet another excuse to act out on hate. in -- >> reporter: there are reports because of people getting monkeypox. it's like hiv all over again. we reached out to the largest blood testing company and said its workers are not trained or equipped-swab leeches to test for monkeypox. labcorp phlebotomist are trained to collect blood from patients who may have different communicable diseases including but not limited to hiv, hepatitis, covid-19 and now monkeypox. gabrielle says despite possible healthcare challenges people may face, her message to the lgbtq community is clear.

>> don't let your fear stop you from getting your vaccination. california senate is forming a new select committee on monkeypox. we have a seven person committee that includes a state community. the goal of the committee is to ensure the safe response to monkeypox is effect and adequately funded. one major area of focus will be boosting availability of monkeypox vaccines and testing. the committee will hold an oversight hearing with state and local health officials and experts next tuesday. we are keeping track how monkeypox is spreading. we posted an interactive map on her website. you can find information on the virus as well. had to nbc area.com. you can also search monkeypox faq on our mobile app.

bridge. a very nice shot. we see a silhouette along with the clouds in the back. >> you can see the fog in the distance. we've had quite a bit of rain across the region. thanks to in part of a tropical system and monsoon moisture. look at that lightning strikes happening over this area and moving over nevada as we are seeing a high amount of humidity. it's going to get drier today. we see the green shifting off towards the east. there may be some mugginess to the air but it does look like drier air comes in for parts of the bay area tomorrow. we are looking at a mostly clear start this morning. as we head to the bay, the seven-day forecast is at the bottom of the screen. look at where we are headed for today. as the humidity comes down, it

will get hotter. we are talking about more 90s on the map with walnut creek reaching 92. oakland in the upper 70s and 70 in san mateo. san francisco thing in the mid 60s for this afternoon. look how hot it will be in ukiah reaching 102. you compare that to the 60s near the coastline so wide ranging temperatures thanks to the climate. we will see some slightly lower humidity into the weekend. we are seeing the surge of the monsoon moisture thanks to this high pressure to the north with this clock wise wind flow that brings it to the north. that's the reason why we are getting the high humidity we are seeing. as we look at our seven-day forecast, our temperatures go from low 90s to upper 80s. not much of a cool down even into early next week. san francisco, we are in a steady pattern with our coastal clouds and fog and that will keep temperatures in check. we will see highs in the upper 60s here. climate in crisis. every day we seek more extreme weather events around the world from wildfires to extreme heat to widespread flooding and

melting glaciers. all of what's happening is not doom and gloom. there are climate activists and scientists working on making sure a worsening climate is not the only future we will and door. i talked to the founder of the foundation for climate restoration who is working with companies and researchers to restore our earth to its natural state by removing carbon that's causing our earth to warm. >> all the pathways ended up being natural. i did astrophysics, designed computers, hi tech is my thing. when all is said and done the four pathways which we call them the big four are all natural. it's because nature has spent billions of years figuring out to keep it stable. >> peter describes four methods of removing harmful carbon from the atmosphere.

drug dealers possessing more than five grams of fentanyl at the time of their arrest to be referred to san francisco's community justice court. her office will reinstate enhancements for drug suspects arrested within 1000 feet of schools. she will try to keep the highest level drug dealing suspects in custody until they had to trial. >> with respect to these drug cases, it's clear that the reason we've had an explosion on our streets with respect to drug dealing specifically fentanyl is because that dealers have learned there have been no consequences and they can fled san francisco. >> we reached out to the public defender who says the district attorney and policies are the kind of practices that create a public health crisis and put a disproportionate number of impoverished people behind bars. he adds, san francisco can and must do better than this. we should invest in our cities resources and funding more solutions such as housing, jobs and treatment. farm workers barking an
