interchange. back to you. tensions boiling over in oakland where angry parents frustrated among dozen offense people believed to be occupying oakland elementary school. activists are planning to speak out later today about what was a very dramatic clash with school security last night. today in the bay bob riddel joins us live. what happened? >> reporter: good morning, you might recall members of the community have been camped out outside parker elementary in oakland for the last several weeks. members of the public tried to push their way into the school building. there was commotion, shoving at one point and people yelling at school security to let someone go. parker is one of dozens of the schools in the district that the district plans to close or merge over the next two years. the community has been fighting hard to keep it open because they say the closure affects students of color which is why

activists are vowing to occupy the school. >> we are continuing to occupy the building because the bigger fight is that our kids are being attacked by privatizers and capitalism continuing to flow over into neighborhoods to where we do not have that much control over. >> we reached out to find out what led up to the confrontation. we went to parker and found the people inside the building had left the premises so we changed the locks set the alarm and someone broke through a lock to get back inside the building and they were we moved. now doing what they can to keep several others from entering the building. the activists plan to hold a news conference to discuss what happened yesterday. they allege a security officer unlawfully detained a parent and hurt them in the process. here in the fuse room, bob

riddell nbc bay area news. jobs are the focus in washington this morning. the july employment numbers are due. it's expected to show continued economic growth but at a slower pace than in recent months. it all comes as the senate compromises on a bill meant to reduce inflation. today in the bay's jay gray is live on capitol hill with a closer look at the deal and what comes next. good morning, jay. >> reporter: hey, good morning kira. after weeks of back room lobbying as well as partisan bickering, senate democrats have cleared a path for legislation that they say will help to provide some relief from what's just been staggering inflation. the partisan fight over the inflation reduction act may be over. >> it's what the american people want, it's what the country so desperately needs. >> reporter: majority leader

chuck schumer said it's bipartisan. democrats say it will provide fund to go fight climate change, lower prescription drug costs and provide desperate needed relief for families dealing with the highest consumer price in the last 40 years. >> americans don't want democrats to regulate us into a deeper recession. >> republicans have bashed the measure saying it's bad for business. working americans and will drive inflation even higher. the frightening thought for families struggling to make ends meet. >> i'm not able to spend more time with my kids because i have to work more hours to provide for what they need. >> the revised bill will face a procedural vote during a rare saturday session and a final vote could come as early as next week. >> reporter: president biden celebrating progress releasing a statement overnight that says we

have taken another critical step towards reducing inflation and the cost of living for america's families. jay gray live for us in dc, thanks so much. new fall out overnight from bay area house speaker nancy pelosi's recent visit to taiwan. china announced new unspecified sanctions against nancy pelosi and her family. sanctions are typically symbolic in nature. china also revealed more about its recent escalation in military drills in the water surrounding taiwan. ten warships are taking part in live fire drills and nancy pelosi is the highest ranking u.s. politician to visit taiwan in 25 years. bay area cities hoping the new public health emergency declaration from the white house will help speed up the arrival of much needed monkeypox vaccines. that declaration made yesterday comes amid rising complaints of testing delays and vaccine shortages.

the administration plans to roll out several million doses for america's most at risk communities and local health experts say it will no doubt ease demand. >> yes, we have just been dealing with the covid-19 pandemic for two years. the fact of the matter is, if covid-19 was not there, we would be seeing monkeypox as a real emergency so i'm glad we're still recognizing that even though it's happening at the same time as covid of the more than 6,000 moim infections nationwide, some 10% are here in the bay area most in san francisco. four people are in critical condition this morning after a lightning strike near the white house. this happened yesterday in nearby lafayette park. doctors this morning have not given an update on victims but the park did remain closed into the evening hours. developing this morning, firefighters near the oregon border are being stretched thin in their efforts to knock down a massive wildfire. the mckinney fire has burned close to 60,000 acres is now 10%

contained. but other smaller fires have started this week in the surrounding area. four deaths are being tied to the mckinney fire and dozens of structures destroyed. taking a live look this morning at fremont heights. look at that view. so nice. not a lot of fog there in that location but we know that it's been a fang inhibitor all week. kari? chris was making fun of me because i thought 40% humidity was high and he's like, no. it's a big deal for us here. >> i think so. still, no. >> okay. yeah. i mean take a look at what's happening up there. we are seeing showers moving through and talking about around the mckinney fire so there's much higher humidity there and some rain. it also feels very muggy if you plan to go to the sierras this weekend. we do still have a chance of thunderstorms firing up once

openings are down and the number of people filing for unemployment is up. so this would be the first of two job reports that the federal reserve will see before its next meeting in september when it's likely to hike interest rates again as it flights inflation. the dow slipping 85 points yesterday but the nasdaq closed at its highest level in four months. tesla shareholders are signing off an a 3 for 1 stock split which will make shares more accessible to smaller investors. elon musk discussing plans to build more factories as it moves forward of a goal of producing 20 million cars per year. tesla currently makes 1.5 million a year. elon musk wants a dozen giga factories. twitter has a new feature for local businesses. location spotlight lets them add address, hours, google map with directions so the customers can contact the business by phone or

humidity will be dropping as we go into today. so as we go into this afternoon, continuing to see some much lower humidity once again. as we take a look at what's going on, we are going to see our temperatures in the south bay starting to come down a few degrees. take a look at highs reaching 81 in san jose. 80 in gilroy and 83 in east san jose for the east bay a lot of temperatures in the 90s the past few days but this is spending more time outside. san mateo reaching 75 degrees and 60s in san francisco. navato reaching 75 degrees. music on the scare in redwood city at 6:00 it's 72 degrees and the sky stays mostly clear throughout the evening.

it hasn't been clear everywhere. a lot of rain across southern california moving into the sierras with monsoons continuing. we see all of this green here showing the mid level moisture in the atmosphere but we are getting drier air comingti toda. once again, that makes it feel much more comfortable. instantly break out into a sweat even though our temperatures are still reaching into the low to mid 80s. we're going to see more of the same throughout the weekend. just slightly cooler early next week but nothing major changing here and for san francisco, upper 60s in the forecast throughout the weekend. mike, you're still tracking that crash in the north bay? >> i was concerned because coming towards us the traffic is a big rig might be overturned maybe another truck there. some fuel and just a lot of details that really concern me. again, this is opposite your morning commute which is going southbound but the northbound side doesn't show any slowing on the sensors.

about a newspaper issue. he cancelled his home delivery and went online only but the papers kept coming. frank called for months to stop the unwanted deliveries every day with no success. we contacted the paper and it finally stopped. to isaac in redwood city, he ordered new specialty headlights for his car, paid $1,800 online. the lights were supposed to arrive in a few months. no delivery, despite waiting a full year. isaac couldn't get a refund until he contacted consumer investigators and our team got isaac his $1,800 back. he could have filed a complaint with the federal trade commission because it says companies must deliver within 30 days except in special circumstances. we made a video showing you how to exercise those rights. you can watch it on our website, streaming channels and youtube page. just look for the how to play

final weeks of summer, some parents heading into work later to spend more time with kids knowing they will get a break later. back to you. happening today, the music returns to golden gate park with one of the largest summer festivals on the entire west coast. >> outside land is coming back full force with some 200,000 fans expected to fill the park over three days or so. today in the bay ginger conejero saab has the best assignment of the day, live with details on the party lined up for the weekend but also with the concerns we have about infections. >> reporter: that's right guys, good morning, things are ready to go. people are really excited because outside lands is back. as you can see behind me, the barriers are up ready to welcome the big crowds expected this weekend. set up is complete inside. it's the 14th outside lands happening here at golden gate park and only nine months since

the previous outside lands that happened less than a year ago because it was adjusted and postponed because of covid last year. this time around there are no masks, no vaccine requirements but that does have some people raising red flags, especially with the ongoing covid surge and monkeypox outbreak. the mayor and organizers say let the music play. >> we want people to understand that covid and monkeypox are still issues that are out there. and the department of public health at this time does not believe that events like this should not continue as a result. >> this year people seem to have settled more into dare i say the covid lifestyle. that covid seems to be here to stay and people are just living with it. >> reporter: this is very important message the mayor does say don't come to the festival if you feel sick but if you are feeling well, here's some things to watch out for this weekend.

the gastro magic stage has huge culinary and celebrity names. the soma tent is back and bigger than it was last year. it was pretty successful that time around and there will be over 100 music acts. it's set to be the most dynamic and diverse line up that the festival has had. big names, post malone, green day, jack harlowe. you guys take your pick but the three day passes are sold out. there are still general admission single day passes that are available for the weekend. and this festival is estimated to bring around $70 million of revenue to the city so a big deal and people are really ready to have fun as well. >> think so. i'm surprised there's still tickets available. new developments in napa where most of the patients sickened in this week's legionnaires' disease outbreak

are now out of the hospital. three patients still being treated. one man with underlying health problems did die because of legionnaires'. the outbreak was traced to a roof top air conditioning unit at an embassy suiteses in na. happening today, a recently fired richmond police officer accused of excessive force is scheduled to be arraigned. earlier this week, richmond police released surveillance video of a tazing incident back in april involving eric smith jr. we have frozen the video but also shows him kicking and striking the suspect multiple times. police say it happened after an attempted traffic stop. smith reportedly later claimed

he believed the suspect was armed. prosecutors this week charged smith with felony assault plus enhancement. major corporations are making big moves to fight the climate crisis. here in the bay area it's starting to pay off. ride sharing giant uber and heard have teamed up to get drivers off the road by offering electric vehicles to be used by drivers. uber says the numbers show progress in the right direction. so far, 15,000 drivers have rented those electric vehicles. five million electric miles have been driven and that means 148,000 gallons of gas were not pumped. this all equated to savings for drivers as well during a time when gas prices reached national record highs. although we have seen a slow down in the gas price increases, uber says this partnership really has opened the doors for a greener lifestyle for drivers

who say that 98% say they have never driven an electric vehicle before. >> we hear from drivers that they want to be part of the climate solution and they're wa. i think the larger challenge isc vehicles more affordable for everyone. historically electric vehicles have been more expensive than the average gas powered car so we really need to make that transition. >> riders can also opt to go green by choosing comfort green as the ride option, something that's only available in select cities nationwide but of course it is available in san francisco. the ride sharing giant plans to make all rides electric by 2030. it's 5:37 now. taking a live look outside in san jose. looks luke a nice morning out there. felt some winds coming in this morning but i don't know if that's an accurate forecast. let's check in with the person who knows everything, meteorologist kari hall.

>> might be a breeze cooler air coming in making it feel comfortable. if you do plan to go to the fremont festival of the arts happening throughout the weekend, we start out at 69 degrees for the morning. then see it headed for the mid 70s and once again, this is much lower than what we have seen recently but as you head over towards the concord jazz festival happening tomorrow, it's going to be also really nice. sunshine and temperatures reaching into the low 80s. enjoy all afternoon but of course you don't want to forget the sunscreen. another school event t it will r for the world dog surfing championships happening in pacifica. we'll see some fog to start out through the morning but there should be enough sunshine peeking through to enjoy the event. if napa valley is in your weekend plans, it's reaching into the low 80s for today. 83 degrees for the high saturday and sunday. in la we have warmer weather with highs reaching into the low

60s and sunshine but really nice all across the region. mike, you're also starting out with weekend traffic. >> don't want to be left behind. i'm forecasting a lot of traffic for outside land so that's your look ahead predicting traffic and folks haven't realized golden gate park. cal train said take it toup the city and the n to o there. that's one of your options as you look at avoiding parking problems. 6:30, the 2000's play list.t very cool for folks remembering their days when they could dance more smoothly. the traffic is moing smoothly and remember 6:30 p.m. concert. also this weekend, saturday and sunday over there on the oakland side, we'll have the battle for the bridge as well. san francisco verses oakland, the giants verses the a's on saturday and sunday. but just the weekend for that series. bay bridge now moving smoothly and no major issues.

weekend. a lot of outdoor activities happening too . >> so much going on. the weather is going to be nice so i'm super excited. man, it's going to be a great weekend. take a look at this beautiful sun ruse that we have looking over san jose. you can see the clouds there, the sun trying to peek through and still quite muggy out there but the humidity is dropping today. we're at 63 degrees as you head out the door. we'll start to see more sunshine as we go towards late morning. temperatures at noon at 78 degrees and eventually making it up to 81. so this is a little bit cooler than what we have had recently with san mateo reaching 74 degrees. the 7-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. we're seeing temperatures a little bit spreading out tomorrow. so the coastal areas stay cool with upper 60s. then you will feel some mid 80s for livermore, fairfield and concord as well as parts of the

south county. then on sunday it's really not changing too much. still looking pretty nice and comfortable. especially for all of the outdoor festivities like outside land. if you're traveling heads up that there's still monsoon moisture moving over parts of southern california so around parts of the southern sierra, there could be a chance of thunderstorms especially today and early tomorrow but it does look like that monsoon cuts off a little bit and where we see all of this green, some drier air will start to come in so there's less of a chance of weekend thunderstorms but much drier air already starting to nudge into the bay area. so this is how our temperatures will look. not much of a change here. but i think because of the lower humidity it's going to feel much more comfortable and we'll head into early next week with some mid 80s inland and for san francisco upper 60s, a mix of sun and clouds throughout the weekend.
