this friday morning's news i'm kris sanchez. >> and i'm kira klapper. laura and marcus both have the morning off. mike will give us an update on road conditions in just a second, but first, starting with a look at the forecast with kari hall tracking what we can expect. yeah, a nice weekend. waking up to a few clouds over parts of the bay area. we're in the low 60s in the next hour and seeing a mix of sun and clouds. temperatures at about 80 degrees at 1:00 today and then as we take a look at our highs a little bit cooler this afternoon and lower humidity coming in. mountain view headed for 79 degrees. 84 in concord. novato reaching 79. a gusty wind picking up at times but that's also transporting the cooler ocean air into the inland values so we'll talk more about what's ahead for the weekend, coming up. mike you're following up on a crash in berkley. yes, this is friday lighter

drive. not much slowing but still for highway 37 it's there. this crash in berkley i mentioned more detail from chp it's your commute direction for the westbound flow at university. that may be out of lanes further up above that on the screen there, west 80 around carlson. a crash just reported more slowing up there so that may be more interesting incident we'll talk about that once we get more from chp just arriving. the rest of the bay shows a traditional friday light, good stuff. back to you. tensions are boiling over in oakland where angry parents are among dozens of people believed to be occupying an oakland elementary school. activists are expected to speak out later today about what happened last night in a dramatic clash with school security. >> today bob redell is live, tell us what happened last night. >> reporter: good morning, activists camped outside parker elementary in oakland for the past several weeks in an attempt

to keep the school open. yesterday, as you see in the video, members of the public tried to push their way into the school building. there was commotion, shoving and at one point people appear to be yelling at the school security to let someone go. parker is one of dozens of the schools that the district plans to close or merge over the next two years. about a dozen schools that is. the community is fighting hard to keep it open. they say the closure of parker affects students of color which is why activists are vowing to occupy the school. >> we're continuing to occupy the building because the bigger fight is that our kids are being attacked by privatizers and capitalism continuing to flow over into neighborhoods where we don't have much control over. >> we reached out to oakland unified to find out what led up to the confrontation. they released the statement, "sd

staff went to parker and found that all the people inside the building had left the premises and we changed the locks. someone broke through a lock to get back unside the building. they were removed and now we're doing what we can to keep several others from entering the building." the activists plan to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss what happened yesterday. they allege a security officer unlawfully detained a parent and hurt them in the process. here in the newsroom, bob redell nbc bay area news. >> we understand the frustration parents sometimes feel. we'll see how that plays out, thank you bob. breaking news in the last hour, what many are calling a new sign of strength in the jobs market. the july employment report shows 528,000 jobs were added, far more than forecasted and it also means the labor market has recovered all 22 million jobs lost during the pandemic.

the jobless rate now sits at 3.5% slightly down from 3.6% in june. this new data comes as the senate compromises on a bill meant to redouse inflation and signs of the slowing economy. today in the bay, jay gray live on capitol hill with a closer look at the deal being brokered. good morning, jay. >> reporter: good morning, the job numbers a big surprise and big boost for the white house. they were thinking things might be slowing down a bit. then there was the deal over night after weeks of back room lobbying and partisan bickering, senate democrats have cleared a path for what they say is legislation that will provide some much needed relief from the staggering inflation. >> the partisan fight over the inflation reduction act may be over. >> it's what the american people want. it's what the country so desperately needs. >> majority leader chuck schumer announcing overnight the measure

now has the full support of senate democrats. the lone hold out kirsten cinema says it will fight lower prescription drug cost and desperate needed relief for families dealing with highest consumer prices in the last 40 years. >> americans don't want democrats to regulate us into a deeper recession. >> republicans have bashed the measure saying it's bad for business. working americans and will drive inflation even higher. the frightening thought for families struggling to make ends meet. >> i can't spend time with my kids because i have to work more hours to provide for what they need. >> reporter: a final vote could come as early as next week after the rare saturday session. >> celebrating the progress president biden released a

statement overnight says in part, "we have taken another critical step towards reducing inflation and the cost of living for america's families." thanks so much for that report this morning. new overnight, fall out from house speaker nancy pelosi's recent visit to taiwan. china announced new unspecified sanctions against nancy pelosi's family. they are typically symbolic in nature. china also revealed more about its recent escalation of military drills in the waters surrounding taiwan. more than 100 warplanes and ten warships are taking part in live fire drills. nancy pelosi is the highest ranking u.s. politician to visit taiwan in 25 years. bay area cities are hoping the new public health emergency declaration from the white house will help speed up the arrival of much needed monkeypox vaccines here. that declaration made yesterday comes amidst rising complaints of testing delays and vaccine shortages. the administration plans to roll

out several million doses for america's most at risk communities and local health experts say it will ease demand. >> yes, we have just been dealing with the covid-19 pandemic for two years. the fact of the matter is, if covid-19 was not there, we would be seeing monkeypox as a real emergency so i'm glad we're still recognizing that even though it's happening in the same time as covid. >> of the more than 6,000 monkeypox infections nationwide, some 10% are here in the bay area most in san francisco. four people in critical condition after a lightning strike near the white house. they were in lafayette park yesterday when that bolt came down. we expect doctors will update how the victims are doing today but the park did remain closed into the evening hours. developing this morning, firefighters near the oregon border are being stretched thin in their efforts to knock down a massive wildfire. the mckinney fire has burned

chose to 60,000 acres. it is 10% contained but other smaller fires have started this week in the surrounding area. four deaths are being tied to the fire. dozens of structures are destroyed. taking a live look in fremont this morning, as the sun is starting to come up and it looks chilly out there now but we know it's a nice weekend because kari told us. we're looking forward to the events going on around the bay area but i know you got to get to work to kick off friday. let's get a live look outside in san francisco where the clouds are rolling in but it doesn't create the low visibility we have seen recently. temperatures in low 60s to start. we'll see the sun peeking out more as we head towards 11:00 and then eventually make it up to 69 degrees today. you head across the bay to oakland land and the high reaching 75 degrees. 81 in san jose. 85 in livermore and 84 in fairfield. there's a breezy wind keeping

the cool ocean air making it further inland so it's going to be a really nice and comfortable day. that continues throughout the weekend. we'll talk more about that coming up but mike, driving to work where can we find lower gas prices. >> some of these are on your route. today we're looking at where you can fill up for under $5 again. in san pablo you can pay $4.69 at great gas. in fremont, we spotted $4.87 a gallon at the 76 on lowry, not far from the fremont festival of the arts. in morgan hill, the golden eagle gas on monterey is $4.99 so it is a qualifier. your friday commute, look at this green. i call out the exception at the top of the screen. there's a crash west 88 university but either it's not a big deal as far as the flow or much less of a deal than this motorcycle crash westbound 80 reports of a lot of lanes blocked, possibly three. there was a lot more slowing

july jobs report and all indices are down, stock futures falling after the strong jobs report. likely to mean more interest rate hikes from the federal reserve. once again, as we mentioned a few minutes ago, 528,000 jobs were added far more than forecasted. all the jobs lost in the pandemic have been regained. the jobless rate now sits at 3.5%. slightly down from 3.6% in june. dozens of bay area stub hub workers facing the reality of looking for new jobs when the new year begins. swiss based viagogo completed its take over of stub hub and a recent letter outlines plans to close its san francisco and shanghai offices by the end of the year. most of the employees in each office will be laid off, about 150 people work out of the bay area. turns out not all pandemic habits are easy to break. doordash is reaping the benefits

of that. the san francisco company says customer made a record setting 426 million orders, more than 20% more than the previous quarter. at the same time, the news isn't all rosy. customers are ordering fewer items likely because of higher prices. twitter is adding a new feature for businesses what it calls a location spotlight allowing businesses to add their addresses, store hours and contact information. might not seem news to us here in the bay area because twitter has been experimenting with this since last year but it's now going to be more widely available for businesses but just the ones that pay for the professional twitter accounts. trending this morning, calvin harris is bringing back the funk with the help of big artists. >> volume two released of his highly anticipated album, funk wave bounces. take a listen.

and let in fresh air. temperatures cooler as well. we start out on this friday morning making weekend plans but i know you got to get to work. let's head to martinez, 62 degrees as you head out for work. starting out with a few clouds. temperatures headed for the mid 70s and it's a slow warm up today because it's going to be cooler with san jose headed for 81 degrees. we're coming out of 90s mostly 80s for some of our warmer spots like antioch reaching 86 degrees and compare that to the 75 we see in oakland and 75 in san mateo and redwood city. san francisco reaching into the upper 60s for today. we're anywhere from 63 in bodega bay to 95 in ukiah. the north bay in the upper 70s and low 80s. music on the square in redwood city starts at 6:00 tonight at the courthouse square and it's going to be 72 degrees. going into the evening, cooler

but i think you will be comfortable with maybe light long sleeves or a light jacket. now, we do still have quite a bit of monsoon moisture moving across the region so if you're traveling and maybe heading to the sierra, heads up another chance of rain and storms as we look at where the green is. that shows the mid level moisture in the atmosphere. just to our south, that dry air comes in we're going to feel more comfortable but if you go outside of that, the mugginess will still be there. so take a look at our temperatures over the next seven days. upper 80s throughout the within. we start out each day with clouds. san francisco seeing at times the fog rolling in but mostly upper 60s for highs into next week. mike, you're starting to see the build up in the east bay. >> yeah, tracking it. i guess i should say i'm trying to find it at the bay bridge. not there. not disappointed, it's friday a lot of folks happy about that. there is a disabled vehicle or a fender bender, something going on around treasure island.

cases to high one where a company woebt deliver and one where a company wouldn't start delivering. brian in san jose flagged us about a newspaper issue. he canceled the home delivery and went online only but the papers kept going. he called for months to stop the unwanted deliveries with no success. good news the paper stopped and now to isaac in redwood city. he ordered new specialty headlights for his car and paid $1,800 online. no delivery despite waiting a full year. isaac couldn't get a refund until he contacted consumer investigators and we got isaac his $1,800 back. he could have filed a complaint with the federal trade commission because it says companies usually must deliver within 30 days except in special circumstances. we recently made a video showing you how to exercise those

which mike might be able to track for us. a large fire burning in oakland. this is from one of our live cameras happening near edge water drive and oakland street. one woman did tweet a photo showing the flames and a large plume of smoke appears to be burning in a commercial building. firefighters are working to respond to the scene. the citizen app video shows large flames shooting into the air and mike says that you can actually see that from 880 so we probably see folks pumping brakes. mike will track that to see if there's road closures related to this. we'll continue to follow this story and bring you updates as we get them. happening today, the music is return to go golden gate park with the largest summer festival on the west coast. outside lands is coming back full force. 200,000 fans are expected to fill the park over three days. ginger conejero saab joins us live at the park with the best

assignment of the day and detail on that party lined up for the weekend. we have to talk about festivities but with the cover of monkeypox and covid also hanging overhead. >> reporter: that's right, good morning. having fun but being cautious still and as you can see behind me, the barriers are set up ready to welcome the 200,000 people who are expected to come to outside lands this weekend. the gates don't open for several hours yet. but the set up is complete inside and you can feel people talking about it and the excitement is there. this is the 14th outside lands that's happening at golden gate park and it happens nine months after the last outside lands that happened in october last year which was postponed because of covid. this time around, no masks, no vaccine requirements and this is probably the closest that the

festival has been to pro-covid. that does have some people raising red flags. especially with the ongoing covid surge and monkeypox outbreak. the mayor and organizers say let the music play. >> we want people to understand that covid and monkeypox are still issues out there and the department of public health at this time does not believe evens like these shouldn't continue as a result. >> this year people have settled more into, dare i say, the covid lifestyle. covid is here to stay and people are just living with it. >> reporter: the mayor says don't come to the festival if you feel sick but if you are feeling well, there are some things to watch out for this weekend. the gastro magic stage has huge culinary and celebrity names. the soma tent is back and bigger than last year and there's over

100 music acts. some big names expected, post malone, jack harlowe and green day. now, the three day passes are sold out but there are still general admission single day passes available. this festival is estimated to bring over $70 million of revenue to the city so a big dole for the city and people who want to come out and have a good time this weekend. >> thanks ginger. i'm going to be live streaming it from home. i used to go before i had kids. this year it's free. >> thanks ginger. all right new developments now out of napa where most of the patients who got sick in this week's legionnaires' disease outbreak are now out of the hospital. three patients still being treated but 8 others have recovered and as you might know, one man who had underlying health problems did die because of the outbreak.

the outbreak was traced to a roof top air conditioning unit at embassy suites in napa valley. they issued a statement saying, "we remain diligent in our commitment to provide a safe hospitalable environment for all and we continue to work with health officials on the ongoing investigation." happening today, a recently fired richmond police officer accused of using excess tive force is schedule to be arraigned. earlier this week richmond police released surveillance video of a tazing incident that happened back if april involving eric smith jr. we are free z the video but it also shows him punching and kicking the suspect multiple times. police say it happened after an attempted traffic stop. smith reportedly later claimed he believed the suspect was armed. prosecutors this week charged

smith with felony assault plus enhancement. major corporations are making moves to fight for our climate in crisis and here in the bay area it is starting to pay off. ride sharing giant uber and hurtz teamed up to get drivers on the road to go green by offering electric vehicle rentals specifically tesla so that uber drivers can use those instead of traditional gas powered vehicles. uber says the numbers show it's working. so far 15,000 drivers rented electric vehicles. you can see that there. that means they drove 5 million miles on electric power instead of pumping 148,000 gallons of gas. this equates to some savings for drivers at a time when gas prices are reaching national highs. we have seen a slow down in the rate of increase in gas prices,

uber says the partnership did open the deal for a greener lifestyle for drivers. 98% of those drivers say they haven't driven an electric vehicle before. >> we hear from drivers that they want to be part of the climate solution and they're looking for ways to do that. i think the larger challenge is we need to make electric vehicles more affordable for everyone. historically, electric vehicles have been more expensive than the average gas powered car so we need to make that transition. >> riders can opt to go green by choosing the uber green and comfort electric ride option, something available only in select cities but it is available in san francisco so that's good. the ride sharing giant plans to make all of their rides electric by 2030. at 6:38 on this friday morning, taking a live look at the sunrise. >> you see that mural it's ruth

the movie industry to stop filming in the most conservative states. a new full page ad appears in variety saying in part, "hollywood should walk the walk and stop filming in states that do not support abortion access rights and lgbtq protections." the ad also touts his support for a new state bill to extend california's film and tv production tax credit program to give people an incentive to shoot here. newsom is on a recent roll using ads to call out conservative states and politicians. previous campaigns covered florida and texas. notable california landmarks may receive a new disney egg nation. the state's historical resources commission will consider eight landmarks for federal or state historical designation including san francisco's palace of fine arts which was built as a temporary insulation for the world's fair in 1915.

one woman tweeted a photo of the large flames and plumes of smoke. the firefighters say the building is red tax. a citizen video shows large flames shooting in the air. for now, firefighters are calling this a one alarm fire. no injuries are ordered. just into the newsroom, a deadly crash near twyla me street. this happened shortly after midnight. the chp told us that one person died in that crash. another person was injured. the roadway is still closed for that investigation. it will reopen within the next hour. also, we are following data about jobs. 528,000 jobs were added. that is more than the forecast.

the labor market has now recovered 22 million jobs lost during the pandemic. the jobless rate is 3.5%, down from 3.6% in june. wage growth is up more than 5% from one year ago. tensions are boiling over in oakland, where angry parents are my people occupying an oakland elementary school. bob is here. the active essay they will speak out later today?>> reporter: that's right, you may remember activists have been camped outside of parker elementary school in oakland. this is an attempt to keep the school open. as you can see in the video, members of the public try to push their way into the school building. there was shoving. people appear to be yelling at school security to let someone go. parker is one of dozens of schools in the district that they plan to close or merge over 2 years. the community is fighting hard to keep it open. they said the closure affects students of color. we reached out to oakland

unified to find out what led up to the confrontation. they believe they release a statement saying the staff went to parker today, and they found the people that were inside the building had left the premises. we change the locks and set the alarm. somebody picked, cut, or broke through a lock to get inside the building. they were removed. now we are doing what we can to keep several others from entering the building. as mentioned, the activists plan to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss what happened yesterday. they allege that a security offer unlawfully detained a parent, and hurt them in the process. we know we will continue to follow that. we will have the latest updates tonight at 5:00, 6:00, and 11:00. thank you for that report. to join us for nbc bay area
