the across the west. two bay area high school students came together for a youth climate summit. wickham is an adviser for the group, and says that the bill will give young climate activists hope. >> these climate emissions reductions also benefit working americans, and will save most americans money on the bill, an promotes investment and money on the energy bill which is mostly needed. and now, as the voting is continuing, the inflation reduction act would be the largest climate investment in u.s. history, but that is not the only thing in the bill. the lawmakers plan to spend $300 million to reduce budget

over the bay bridge yesterday afternoon. you can see about a couple of dozen cycists heading to the bridge, and some popping wheelies and swerving through the lanes. the chp officers caught up to some of them, and directed to bike paths, but a few of them made it to the other side of the bridge before being caught, and no arrests were made. the police are investigating two separate shootings in downtown oakland that left three people dead. the shooting happened after midnight friday on webster street putting one man in the hospital. police say he is in grave condition with life threatening injuries. the second shooting happened around the block on broadway, and one man was killed and two others injured. they are in the hospital initn. the police have not released any

motive. in san francisco, a suspect and officers exchanged gun fire yesterday morning and it happened just before the 8:00 a.m. in the mission district. sfp says it started when they tried to detain a man. the man allegedly hid behind a car and then shot at the officer who then shot back. additional officers respond, and that suspect allegedly opened fire again, and somehow, no one was hurt, and the police say it is possible that the gun was shooting blanks, because it looked like a replica. the police are going to release information as the investigation continues. happening today, the members of the asian american community, and the allies are going to gather as they face violence faced by asian elders. the group asian justice movement is going to hold a march today, and the gold is to demand increased safety in low income

housing, and that the police apprehend the perpetrators of the recent violent attacks. they want to address all of the recent violence. today'smation can be held at the mckinney park. and today, the mckinney fire, the containment is up from 30% to 40%. bay area firefighters are up near the border. so far the flames have burned 60,000 acres and destroyed at least 87 home, and four people have died in the fire. a power line is being investigated as a possible cause of the fire but not one of pg&e's powerlines. at 7:09, much more ahead on today in the bay, and we will take you the washington, d.c., with the weekly interview with chuck todd who has a preview of today's "meet the press."

welcome back. it is time now for the weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc's political director and editor of "meet the press." hi, chuck. thank you for joining us this morning. and in the past few days we saw legislators pass a new law in indiana and near total law against abortion, and then in kansas, they rejected the law to ban abortion, and so do you see this as a hint of what is to come as we head into the midterms? >> boy, i do. i think that you can't sit here and say that kansas is somehow some sort of isolated political shock. this is a lot of political analysts thought that the overturning of roe v. wade could essentially a i waik a lot of voters who were not too focused on the midterms, and we had seen a lot of hints it post dodds,

and we saw that fund-raising numbers up for democrats and then kansas happened. i think that this changes everything about the midterms. it is pretty clear that both sides have issues that are motivating the voters to the polls, and that, and this is feeling more like the presidential-like environment when everybody is engaged. when you have everybody engaged, you have a higher turnout, and when you have a higher turnout, the results are more unpredictable. and going to d.c. where you were a moment ago when we were talk about the vote-a-rama and the tuition lower cost, and climate change, and and what does this really boil down to for the average american? >> well, three bucket, and the thing that touches the american the most is the prescription drug benefit. look, this is altered a little bit in and fairly significantly,

and the senate parliamentarian. the government wanted the ability to negotiate with the pharmaceuticals to bring down the cost of medication, and to make sure that the people who are not on the medicare to also not get gouged on the medication, but they took it out, so the bill is only going to create a deal for seniors, so will the pharmaceutical companies decide to take whatever money they are mot making on the senior recipients and then raise the prices for those on private insurance and elsewhere, and how do you prevent, that and that a new hole in this law that i have a feeling, you know, i don't know too many corporations that don't look for ways to find more profits rather than less, so

as we take a live look outside. the cloudy skies with the sun breaking through over san jose on the sunday morning. we want to thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kiara clapper. meteorologist rob mayeda is in this morning and has a look at the climate forecast. >> thank you, and we start out with low clouds in the santa clara valley, and breaking through oakland and gray skies for now there, and we are expecting clearing there with the bay bridge series continuing with the first pitch at 1:07, and we should see clear skies at oakland and the mild temperatures at the bay area, and san jose with the mid-70s, and 80 towards morganhill, and san martin, and comfortable upper 60s to low 70s to oakland. it is a nice forecast that we could see more potential storms

sea breeze keeping air quality locally good, because we have active fires burning off to the north. so through the day, the west/southwest winds will pick up around 3:00 this afternoon, and we will see that we have a mild finish for the weekend. speaking of the fires, the largest smoke producer is the six rivers lightning complex, and up here in hum bolten in trenton county, and to the west of mandocino county. and you will see that there is fantastic air quality, and close to 70 degrees from san francisco to oakland and mid-70s to san jose, and warmer from morgan hill to san martin, and fairfield, you will see the 80s in reach, and eventually, seeing the sunny skies into the 70s. as we move you forward to middle

part of the week, we will see the temperatures climbing and another chance of mid-and high level clouds coming in as the monsoon temperatures are briefly going to be impacted south of lake tahoe around yosemite and tuesday, we will see the clouds and heading towards next weekend and active weather in the desert of southern california and the sierra, and this far west, we will not be seeing the showers from that, and we won't see the same amount of humidity like we saw last week. around san francisco, we will see the temperatures climbing, and the second half of the week, wednesday and thursday, the warmest part of the week as we transition to back to summer like temperatures, and finish inland in the 80s, and thursday, we could see low to mid-90s in the east bay valley, and just like that, heading to next weekend cooling down, and this is good news for air quality, and temperatures are looking

look at the integrity of the election, border wall, and constitutional rights. based on the 2022 census, the latino population is the largest racial group in america, and historically, the latinos have voted overwhelmingly democratic, but it may be changing. political analyst larry gurston is here, and good morning. what does this mean for the nation when it comes to future elections? >> it is so interesting, key keyira. over the last three decades the republicans are largely white, and democrats are a largely white with a good dose of latino populations, and as you can see that the composition here, the voters are saying they it has gone up from 8.4% in 2014 to 16%

in 2020 and that is a major change in the demographic population. >> and so if that is now equal to what looks like the african-american percentage of the electorate, why focus on the latino vote versus other minoriies? >> it is a good question. what we are seeing is that the african-american votes and other votes have been stable with the coalition, but the latino votes are another story, and we are seeing a considerable drop in candidates that are over the last eight years from 71% to 51% which is the largest group of the largest group in the country, and that has people thinking that the democratic coalition is not as robust as in the past. >> why do you suspect that

significant drop, and what does it mean for future elections? >> yeah. you know, i think that there are a few things to consider here, and the democrats may have put the latinos in the same mold, and the mistake to always make with various racial and ethnic group, and in florida, it is cubans who are largely with the puerto rican vote, and in texas, and the latino votes are in different parts of mexico and central america, and that is one thing, and the other thing is that the latinos are changing with largely respect of religion, and a quarter of them are no longer protestant but catholic, and other religious groups come to change them. and the first is to put the bread on the table, and the second and the third go into politic, and this is a big change, and democrats may not have understood that. >> it is dangerous the go back a couple of minutes to what you

welcome back. here is a quick look at the top stories that we are following this sunday morning including breaking news out of cincinnati, ohio. nine people were shot this morning in the downtown area. none of the injured are in critical condition we are told. the police say that one officer fired a round, but it is unknown if he shot the shooter. the gunman ran from the scene, and he has not been seen since. the police are searching surveillance cameras and asking witnesses who have any information for help. and the senate floor has been on the floor for a amdment reduction act. the lawmakers gathered saturday to vote on the bill which would attempt to tackle climate change. it would provide $369 billion for climate and clean energy

provisions. if passed the inflation reduction act would be the largest climate investment in u.s. history, and that is not the only thing that the bill will work to fight inflation, and hence the name, and lawmakers will spend $300 million for budget deficits, and the bill could come as soon as the end of the week. and we have an update of the oak fire in yosemite and now up to 92% contain and this is up from 90 earlier in week, and burned more than 19,000 acres. and to the north, the mckinney fire near the oregon border, and the crews are making progress this weekend, and the containment is up to 40% up from 30%, and the bay area firefighters are up there helping out as well. so far, the flames have scorched more than 60,000 acres, and 87 homes have been destroyed, and four people have died. a power line is being investigated as a possible cause of the fire, but it is not an
