right now at 4:30, return school today, many districts are dealing with staffing shortages. the critical need in the classroom and how this could impact your child. april fighting the spread of monkeypox. we look inside one bay area clinic that is battling the outbreak firsthand. the reason they say it is crucial we get a hold of this virus about ever it gets too late. plus it's the start of a new week. meteorologist kari hall is breaking down our work week weather so we know what's where.

this is "today in the bay," streaming on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> good monday morning, the team getting you through the morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. we are going to talk with mike about that traffic situation and we are going to start with kari, though. >> we're starting out with a few clouds this morning and it does feel a little bit humid in spots. temperatures in theóagç upper 5n dublin. a little mix of sun and clouds today but it will be clearing out as we typically see, and we will see those temperatures a little bit cooler than what we've had recently, only reaching 78 degrees in dublin. livermore reaching 83. san jose headed up for 77 degrees and we'll see some upper 70s and low 80s, so notice that these temperatures are cool to start out our week, but it will be heating up and we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you were talking a little bit about something happening at the caldecott. >> yeah, we know there was overnight construction for one of the bores and so i checked

in. the speed sensors on our map system hadn't realigned. i was coming it refreshed and another report i'm getting and those sensors were lit up. i'm going to say a little bit of lag transferring that day tax that's how quickly we get you the reports. that should be reopened and i'll let you know if there's any problem. no problem, there's at least one bore. a new incident near the bay bridge toll plaza, we'll check on that so far. so far green sensors. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we are moving forward all this week trying to help you and your family prepare for back to school, as kids head back to class across the bay area and as kids go back, districts are facing critical staffing shortages in a number of different areas. "today in the bay's" maevian favro looks at this issue and what schools are doing to get more teachers in the classroom asap. >> reporter: as students return to classes in the oakland unified district administrators are scrambling to fill vacant teaching positions.

san francisco unified is also grappling with a significant teacher shortage. >> we have about 100 openings right now, 100 vacated classment radios to staff before august 17th. it's a problem across the bay area including in marin county and san ramon. laura finco, president of the san ramon valley education association is concerned about the impact a teacher shortage will have on students who may be taught by substitutes and administrators. >> it's going to have a negative impact on how they're going to start the year and if you can't start strong, how are you going to finish strong? >> reporter: in addition to the high cost of living in the bay area, the pandemic has played a role in teaching leaving. >> it's put a lot of physical and emotional stress on people and you see people reevaluating what they want to do and where they want to go and prioritizing family. >> reporter: to attract more teachers, san francisco unified is holding job fairs, posting

flyers on muni buses and offering bonuses or bilingual and special ed. teachers but if the district can't quickly higher 100 teachers? >> we're also looking at closing some classrooms if we don't have a full class, full enrollment, and finally, starting to take a difficult step of looking at using other district staff to cover classrooms we're unable to hire. we're committed to having a teacher in every classroom to welcome students. >> reporter: laura finco hopes the state will offer more competitive salaries and provide incentives for people to join the profession. >> if we don't do something statewide, we are going to find ourselves in a crisis that will directly and negatively impact our students. >> reporter: marianne favro, "today in the bay." >> as we mentioned all week long we're covering everything you need to know as your children return to school and our website

is an important resource, too, including new start times that begin this year and new protocols for covid on nbcbayarea.com. 4:34 for you this morning. in san francisco, police arrested a man who is accused of attacking a local city leader. now the victim long time city commissioner and aapi leader gregory chu. this was a photo from his linkedin profile. the 70-year-old told officers that he had been knocked to the ground by a stranger. now that attack happened last tuesday night near folsom and third. police say they hope the arrest gives chu some peace of mind. >> i would assume that he would be relieved to know that the person who attacked him has been apprehended, for any victim of an assault like this to know the person out there is still out there it can be freight ning especially after an incident and

knowing the person has been apprehended brings a certain amount of peace. >> of the city leaders applauding the arrest including supervisor matt dorsey. turning to monkeypox coverage, san francisco is expecting more than 10,000 tows doses of vaccines that were promised last week. the walk-in clinic at sf general will reopen tuesday through saturday. kaiser, ucsf and sutter will also give shots but by appointment. all together, 23,000 doses have been sent to san francisco in just the past few weeks. community clinics across the bay area are testing and vaccinating and doing what they can before the window to end the outbreak closes. "today in the bay's" steph me marjon got a look inside a clinic which says this fight is similar to the battle against covid. >> reporter: one swab at a time and with enough dna it's off to the lab to be examined for

monkeypox. workers at clinics across the bay area have been front line soldiers in the war against covid and now monkeypox. >> to be honest what i'm seeing with monkeypox and this outbreak is very reminiscent of the early days of covid and so we've got to pull out that playbook and use it. >> reporter: dr. munjabia says they are starting to see more patients being evaluated for monkeypox than covid. >> also the volume of testing that we're doing and the number of people who were coming back as positive for monkeypox, that's been increasing steadily. in fact, over the last week it almost doubled. >> reporter: this is the latest monkeypox map it's growing brighter as orange dots reflect the outbreak. the u.s. is reporting over 7,000 cases, more than 1,300 in california and over 400 just in san francisco where people have been hunting down vaccines and trying to ignore what they call a growing trend of

misinformation. >> let's figure out the technical side of it, if i start getting concerned and separate all the noise. >> we do hear about it regularly and obviously it's grown in the number of cases over the last several weeks or months. >> reporter: the truth says the virus is mostly impacting men who have sex with men but it doesn't mean it won't spill over into other populations. >> it's new to our communities, our demographics and the way it's manifesting appear to be different or not exactly like what we see in textbooks. >> reporter: he believes health experts everywhere need to pull out their covid playbook which reads, test, isolate, treat and vaccinate, while the disease is still containable. >> i think all of us have learned enough about pandemics and transmissible diseases that we can see the pattern emerge. that should make us smarter in managing this situation. >> reporter: stephanie mrgajon

welcome back, you're watching "today in the bay." it is 4:46 for you this. this morning we're getting a look at the mckinney fire from space, this is from the international space station's camera. it flew over the fire and you can see the smoke from high above. so far the fire burned more than 60,000 acres making it the largest fire burning in california now. it is 40% contain. >> looks like the arm of the international space station. it's hard to make sense of it in your brain because you can barely see it. looks a little different down here on earth. >> that looks beautiful. >> gorgeous. >> meanwhile, here on earth. [ laughter ] >> literally, other earthly news we have a forecast that looks lovely. it's still a little bit muggy but i'll be positive. >> well, i mean, it's

california. every single day in san francisco is humid, so we're starting out with our marine layers and the clouds in the bay area. take a look at san jose. now we have had some higher humidity thanks to the monsoon moisture and we're seeing the layer of clouds to start out with this morning in san jose. we're in the low 60s to start and we'll see those temperatures stay in the low 60s through about 8:00 and then we'll start to feel some temperatures warming up into the low 70s. today we'll actually be the coolest day of the week. look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. today we're headed for the upper 70s. 75 in fremont. 83 in livermore. some of our warmest spots inland will reach into the mid 80s. much of the north bay seeing highs in the low 80s today and tomorrow more of the same but a few spots starting to come up a degree or two and that is the trend throughout the week. on wednesday we'll feel the

warmer temperatures coming in for some of our valleys. we've been talking about how humid it is. it's still triggering spotty showers across the region especially over the tahoe area, where there's isolated showers popping up this morning. doesn't look like that's going away any time soon. we're seeing the high pressure kind of pushing a lot more of that moisture from the southwest into our area but the monsoon moisture for the most part stays just off to our east, so as we look at gilroy over the next few days, our temperatures continue to reach into the mid 80s, and seen though we have a milder start to the week, it does warm up awe few degrees into the weekend. we see temperatures trending slightly upward but not significantly so we are just going to see some more of a summer-like feel to the air while san francisco keeps its usual summer with upper 60s and low 70s over the next few days. mike, how is it looking at the

been been toll plaza? >> it looks light but i'm covering up the justify ramp, a couple of sets of lights over here. there was just one set of flashing lights faintly visible. that's the disabled vehicle. chp put it on the grid and that's where it popped up on our map. there it is on the overcrossing, it's critical as they funnel from the maze to the bay bridge, right now not impeding traffic but there may be a traffic break and i saw slowing sensors on north 880. we see slowing sensors coming off of west 580 as well. they may be moving the traffic flow and slowing it a bit so they can give assistance to that one vehicle. hopefully it clears without any repercussions of the flow of traffic. we'll follow that one small area. age could cross the bridges it's fine, carquinez bridge and benicia bridge, a long drive through the antioch and east bay. the south bay one incident reported on 101 in santa clara.

the placer county sheriff's office is hoping anyone who knows something will let them know. developing in new mexico, growing belief a recent string of shootings targeting muslim men may be connected. investigators hope they may solve the mystery. the latest shooting happened friday night. it followed the deadly shooting one week ago. since november, four men have been shot and killed. the mayor of albuquerque says law enforcement agencies are working together to make sure that everyone else or no one else i should say is killed. >> we heard from the community that the fear is so strong, they're concerned about things like groceries and getting meals for certain folks in certain areas of town. >> really hoping an arrest is made. in some cases, volunteers are helping neighbors get things that they need and police are increasing patrols around mosques and schools. investigators have also released photos of a vehicle that may be connected, a dark gray or silver volkswagen, they believe it's either a jetta or passa at.

happening today attorney general rob bonta tries to get the word out about federal student loan forgiveness. up to 1 million californians may be eligible simply by signing up for the public service loan forgiveness website. only about 10,000 people have taken advantage statewide with an october 31st deadline quickly approaching. bonta will hold a virtual news conference at 10:00 this morning. >> wow. having paid off student loan debt, that is a big deal. we'll put a link on our social pages for that. also, you might call it cleaning with special meaning. coming up on "today in the bay," certainly not your average car wash. the story behind the benefit for the families of fallen heroes also going a long way to help the environment. and happening now, san ramon city leaders are considering approving a development funding for multimillion-dollar bridge construction plan. if an agreement with the
