this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> good tuesday morning. i'm kris sanchez smpbl. laura garcia is off this week. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike has a look at the commute, hopefully it's not too bad out there for you. we got to get a look at the forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that and how are we looking? >> it's been so nice. yesterday was perfect. it's going to be nice again today, as we take a live look outside in san francisco. >> ooh! >> i love this view from emeryville looking toward san francisco. we are going to see the morning clouds and fog rolling by keeping the temperatures cooler. as we head through today, highs reaching into the upper 60s and for parts of the north bay some upper 70s and low 80s. novato reaching 81 degrees. 73 in san mateo and in oakland, while fremont and san jose will continue to reach into the upper 70s, all of this a little bit cooler than what's normal for this time in august so we'll continue to monitor that.

we'll talk about a warmup and mike, how is it looking for early morning commuters? >> we're tracking a crash in oakland, 580 westbound, we did have a crash and some slowing. looks like this vehicle was able to make its way off or be assisted off at keller, so that's a smoother drive traveling from 98th to the warren freeway. the rest of the freeway looking good as we expect, just mild slow pass. we'll keep our eyes out. back to you. three people accused in the death of a young girl inside of a south bay church are due in court for a plea hearing. rene hernandez santos and claudia hernandez are accused in the smothering death of hernandez's 3-year-old daughter last summer during the girl's ex-orism. the two men were the father and uncle and they said they did is

because they thought the child was possessed by an evil spirit. bay area students return to class this week and next week. safety concerns at the forefront of parents' minds. joining us is infectious disease specialist dr. peter chin-hong. we want to talk about mass masks. my kid's school district doesn't require masks anymore. what do you think kids should do? >> withal it all depends on the kid. if the kid is immune compromised, specifically speaking if the kid hasn't been vaccinated and is not eligible for a booster, it may be a right time to wear a mask, if the levels of community transmission are high which many of the bay area still is and ultimately it depends on who the kid lives with. if the kid lives with grandma

who might be immune compromised or somebody else in the family, that might be reason to think about being a little more cautious in school. >> what should we be doing at home? should we be testing our kids regularly? >> no, i think that my recommendation is really only to test if you have symptoms at this moment. i think what we found over time where at least the data suggests that a high proportion of kids already have had some exposure is to do symptomatic testing and it's been really resourced intensive in some schools. you may see the cdc reemphasize that in the upcoming week. >> i guess we'll be able to save some of our covid tests at home, now that we know we're testing for symptomatic. what do you say in terms of extracurricular activities? my kids are swimmers, soccer season is coming around. should we take any precautions there that are different from

school? >> no, i think with contact sports, particularly in california, outdoors is less risky than indoors but if you're indoors as well, again, very simple rules, which kind of go on for much of the year, even before covid, if you're sick, please don't participate in sports and again, be in touch with people's symptoms, again, ventilation is going to be key, large ceilings, good ventilation, indoor gym still probably going to be okay and you know, locker rooms, sharing meals, depends on the transmission outdoors. >> we want to talk to you about monkeypox. we know that this has been more prevalent in some communities in some of our communities in the bay area, but in terms of children, we know that it can be contagious through contact with objects and utensils, so should we be worried about monkeypox in schools? >> not at this point at all.

good tuesday morning. a live look at downtown san jose, looking nice and bright. >> that is nice. >> dark early for you this morning. start of the day is 4:47 and another look at the forecast and kari, how is it shaping up? >> looks pretty nice for now, we've enjoyed cooler than normal temperatures. as you know, things are going to change especially as we head toward the end of the week. we're seeing the clouds overhead

right now. first day of school for more kids going back at acalanes union high school, it's in the upper 50s as we head out the door. as we go into the afternoon t will reach into the mid-70s so a really nice, comfortable day, as we zoom into the south bay, reaching 77 in downtown san jose. we'll see some mid 80s for morgan hill and 80 for coup tee row. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen, danville, pleasanton reaching 82 degrees and oakland reaching 73, and we'll see some temperatures in the low 70s for san mateo, but upper 70s for redwood city, and daly city reaching 67 degrees. you can still see the range in temperatures especially from the coast to the inland areas, downtown reaching 69 in san francisco, 78 for mill valley and 86 today for clear lake and we are dealing with some drier conditions, lower humidity, you can tell by the brown that's there but all of the green that high humidity will start to surge back toward the bay area

on friday, that coming as the temperatures will be going up, so we'll feel very warm and muggy as we head toward late friday into saturday and you can see the trends of the temperatures going up as well so we're in the low 80s for the next couple of days and then seeing some low 90s headed toward the weekend, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s, we will see those temperatures only going up just slightly over the next few days. mike, you're already tracking a few incidents. >> yeah, they're smaller so that's the good news. this one over here, 680 at mckee i talked about that after the commercial break and that took a light pull-out. no major injuries and that pole has been cleared from the freeway, the most important part for the south bay slowing. slowing 101 southbound, right by the airport. usually that's just a slower-moving crew, crews moving around from overnight work, just like this crew will be leaving shortly from niles canyon, 238
