"today," tuesday, august 9, 2022. >> announcer: from nbc news this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. 7:00 on the west coast, tuesday morning. we're glad to have you with us. craig in for hoda. we're going to take a loving look back at olivia newton-john. >> lots of folks grieving the loss this morning. she spent a lot of time here at "today" over the years. to your point, we are going to spend a fair amount of time this morning looking back at that remarkable life. first, stunning developments surrounding former president trump after the fbi executed a search warrant at mar-a-lago, his home and club down in florida. >> it was trump himself that broke the news. he released a lengthy statement

blasting the search, claiming his property was being occupied by fbi agents. he later tried to brush it off saying it was another day in paris and a strange day. >> people gathered around showing support for the former president. >> the question is being asked, what were the agents looking for, and what could the fallout be? could he face criminal charges if he did break the law? we're also going to talk to house speaker nancy pelosi, who joins us for her first live interview since she returned from taiwan. we begin with nbc national correspondent, kerry sanders, outside mar-a-lago for us this morning. kerry, good morning. i know there are a lot of protesters there this morning already. this is clearly going to be a big story. what's the latest you have there? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. you can see there are still some protesters here. just beyond is mar-a-lago. a senior u.s. official tells nbc

news that the fbi spent much of monday here at mar-a-lago. another official telling nbc news that they were searching for documents that the former president allegedly brought with him after he left office to mar-a-lago. mr. trump saying that this is all a case of political persecution, but veteran fbi agents say it would take a very high bar for a federal judge to sign off on a search warrant. overnight, supporters gathering outside former president donald trump's private club mar-a-lago. trump in new york, departing trump tower, and ignoring questions from reporters. >> mr. trump, can we get your reaction to the raid, sir? >> reporter: in a statement issued just 7:00 monday night, mr. trump said, mar-a-lago was under siege, raided and occupied by a large group of fbi agents, claiming it was unannounced and portraying himself as the victim

of political persecution, adding they even broke into my safe. according to a source familiar with the search, it was related to classified information. the former president allegedly took with him to mar-a-lago after leaving the white house. in february, the national archives announced that classified material was discovered in 15 boxes of white house records stored at the estate, referring the matter to the justice department eric trump says -- >> to have 30 fbi agents descend on mar-a-lago, give absolutely no notice, go through the gates, start ransacking an office, ransacking a closet, they broke into a safe. he didn't even have anything in the safe. >> reporter: republicans overnight criticizing the search senator lindsey graham writing, launching such an investigation of a former president this close to an election is beyond problematic. the justice department is also pursuing a separate

investigation into january 6th last month attorney general merrick garland telling lester holt that an election would not affect their efforts >> so if donald trump were to become a candidate for president again, that would not change your schedule or how you move forward or don't move forward? >> i'll say again that we will hold accountable anyone who was criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer, legitimate lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next. >> reporter: of course, as a candidate in 2016, mr. trump repeatedly blasted candidate hillary clinton for mishandling information and emails during the raid here yesterday, there was a representative for mr. trump, a lawyer who says that she has been cooperating with the fbi and the department of justice the head of the rnc saying what happened here was, quote,

outrageous and an abuse of power. the white house says that it was not notified of what was happening here, and when nbc reached out to the white house, they referred all calls to the department of justice. savannah >> kerry sanders, we see some of the trump supporters behind you there in mar-a-lago. let's bring in ken delaney, an nbc news correspondent to obtain a search warrant against a former president and in his home is quite an aggressive and extraordinary step this would have had to go to the highest levels of the justice department and the fbi to be approved, would it not >> absolutely, savannah. not just aggressive. this is unprecedented. and there's little doubt this move was approved by attorney general merrick garland. justice department officials aren't commenting, but you may recall in january the national archives retrieved 15 boxes of presidential records from mar-a-lago that was with trump's permission archivists said they found classified material in the boxes

and referred the matter to the doj who began an investigation normally if an ex-president has documents he shouldn't have, the government would simply ask for them back. this move suggests something broke down in a big way and these documents may have contained some very sensitive information. this move doesn't mean trump will be charged, but it's a big deal. >> what would the fbi have to establish to get a federal judge to authorize a warrant of this nature >> the fbi would have had to convince that federal judge there was evidence of a crime inside trump's florida home and that a search was the only way to retrieve it multiple people have told us that they were after -- what the fbi was trying to recover, boxes of documents that may have included highly classified information and that they left there with lots of material. >> how specific do they have to be about exactly what they're looking for? in other words, can this be some kind of fishing expedition >> it can't be a fishing expedition they have to tell the judge

exactly what they're looking for and they have to file a document with the court saying what they took but it's also true that if they found evidence of other crimes, they're free to seize that material. >> is there any reason to believe that this warrant and this search has anything to do with something other than the national archives case which you just laid out and the 15 boxes the archives got and then rerred it to the justice department as we know, there are other investigations, state investigations, for example. is there any reason to believe this search has anything to do with those other investigations or the january 6th hearings, i should add >> of course we've asked that question, savannah we're being told you can't rule anything out we have to be humble about what we don't know here there are not only state investigations, there's a federal grand jury investigation that is getting closer to trump about what happened on january 6th and the efforts to overturn the election

trump's election lawyer was served a search warrant, top former white house officials have been called before a grand jury here in washington in recent weeks and we've reported that that grand jury is asking questions about donald trump so it's possible we can't rule it out that some part of this has to do with that but it's also possible it doesn't. >> very quickly, the president has described this as a raid, said that mar-a-lago was under siege, it was broken into. do you have any information about how this search was conducted? >> yeah, officials i've spoken to have pushed back on describing this as a raid. the fbi notified secret service a few hours before the search and trump's lawyers were also told he wasn't there, he was in new york but it's also true that this warrant signed by a judge gave the fbi the authority to force its way into the house if that's what agents needed to do that's what makes it such a big step. >> ken delaney, our justice correspondent, thank you very much. another big story, tens of

high humidity from the gulf of mexico has been in here. as the front pushes through it will be bringing severe showers and thunderstorms. in the meantime, by thursday, cooler, dryer canadian air, so relief is on the way. >> music to our ears thank you very much. we'll come back to you in just a moment. now encouraging news in the fight against lyme disease the most common tick-borne illness, the first potential vaccine in decades is entering its final phase of testing and it comes after recent studies showed nearly 15% of the world's population has likely had the condition, including hundreds of thousands of americans every year nbc's senior medical correspondent, dr. john torres is with us in the studio let's just start with how significant is this, this potential vaccine? >> this is going to be a very significant breakthrough once the vaccine gets approved. they're looking at getting approval in 2025 they're just now entering phase three. they're going to roll 6,000 people, different areas of the world, including children. we don't have a vaccine right

now for lyme disease, and as you mentioned, lyme disease has essentially exploded across the country over the last few years. >> how many shots are we talking, one shot, multiple shots? >> this is a three-dose shot regime, three doses over five to six months and after that you'll probably need an annual shot as well. so it's going to be one that's a bit more complicated than most vaccines, but certainly will protect against something that can be fairly dangerous. >> there was a vaccine a couple decades ago? >> it was fda approved in 1998, they withdrew it from the market in 2002 because nobody wanted it they said at the time there wasn't that much lyme disease, so nobody went after a vaccine until, again, now we see lyme disease cropping up more across the country. so pfizer stepped in and saidlet go ahead and try to do this. >> symptoms of lyme disease? >> essentially it starts off like the flu, fevers, chills, muscle aches the target lesion is the tell-tale symptom, a rash that looks like a target. if you see that, you definitely want to get checked.

>> dr. john, thank you, as always. we turn to the passing of an icon, olivia newton-john, who died yesterday at the age of 73. this morning, family, friends and her many fans around the world are paying tribute to an icon, singer, actress, advocate. nbc news now anchor joe fryer is here with a look back at her remarkable life. >> in a statement on facebook, it was her husband who announced that olivia newton-john died peacefully at her ranch in southern california. she was surrounded by friends and family for years she had battled breast cancer, pushing for mr research and never getting her diagnosis interfere with her hopeless optimismn impressive ♪ summer night ♪ >> reporter: in the musical "grease" sandy transforms from virtuous cheerleader to stiletto heeled bad girl. >> tell me about it stud

worldwide, a legacy that in 2014 brought her to vegas for a residency where i asked what's her favorite song. >> it's like a having a bunch of kids i don't think you can pick a favorite you might have a special one that day that's behaving really well >> reporter: her legacy is much more than music. 1992 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, a disease that returned two more times. she created a wellness and research center in her name calling herself a cancer thriver. >> cancer can engulf your mind and engulf your being and i try not to live my life with that in my mind all the time i live beyond it, i love beyond it, i sing beyond it, and i want that for everybody >> reporter: among the many tributes now pouring in, this from travolta. you made all of our lives so much better. your impact was incredible i love you so much your danny, your john. and olivia's daughter chloe posted a series of touching photos with her mom taken over

the years. family, friends and fans now more than ever hopelessly devoted. newton-john's family called her a symbol of triumphs and hopes for sharing her journey with breast cancer for over 30 years. she was a vocal advocate for plant-based treatments and for building a life outside of the disease. as you heard her say it didn't engulf your entire being there was life beyond cancer >> she was an extraordinary person and one of the things she did so well was handle with so much grace everyone's adoration. for a girl of a certain age or a certain era, where we would meet her and see her, it was an overwhelming amount of love and adoration, and she was always so kind and humble and gentle and she's so fierce as an advocate i know so many people are just -- we're heartbroken. we loved her >> one of our colleagues, lauren spector, said she sparkles that was a lovely way to sum it up >> we're going to keep talking about her. >> she spent a lot of time with us over the years. >> she came on the show many

federal prison, as had been requested by their attorneys their neighbor roddie bryan was sentenced to 35 years. all three men already are serving life sentences for their convictions in state court the family of gabby petito announced a wrongful death lawsuit against police in moab, utah they accused the department of failing to properly investigate petito's domestic violence case and protect her. the lawsuit seeks $50 million in damages. brian laundrie, petito's fiance, admitted to killing her in a notebook discovered near his body after he took his own life. david mccullough has died. he won a pulitzer prize in 1993 for his biography on president harry truman and another nine years later for a biography on president john adams. in 2006 mccullough was awarded the presidential medal of freedom. he passed away sunday at his home in massachusetts surrounded by his five children david mccullough was 89 years old. meanwhile, members of the

house will return to washington this week to take up the sweeping economic and climate bill just passed along party lines in the senate, one of many issues on the plate of house speaker nancy pelosi of course she has been in the headlines for her trip to taiwan, met with its president, and voiced ironclad support for the nation's democracy the white house publicly backed the speaker's right to make that visit. the president made clear top military officials did not believe it was wise to do so at this time. and in the aftermath china has responded aggressively escalating military action in the region and stoking fears of a confrontation. so we have a lot to discuss this morning with speaker pelosi who is joining us for her first interview since returning to washington speaker pelosi, good morning it's good to have you with us this morning >> my pleasure good morning >> let's start with the news, breaking news, the fbi carrying out that surprise warrant, a search of mar-a-lago, the former president's home, looking for evidence

what do you make of that search? how significant does this strike you to be? >> well, i, as others, learned on my phone that had happened. i don't know very much about it. but, again, i'm sure that information will be revealed and when it does, we'll find out what they were looking for it seems to have something to do with presidential documents, but i really am not in a position to talk about it. all i know is what's in the public domain. >> does it strike you as a pretty serious step for the justice department to take >> yes, i think it does. i was questioning it because all i saw on my phone was that donald trump said that the visit took place and described it in pretty harsh terms it will be interesting to find out exactly what the warrant was in order to have -- what the order was to have a search

warrant and for what purpose but, again, we can only speculate. >> and before we leave it, i just want to mention house republican leader counterpart kevin mccarthy put out a statement responding to the search and said in part, when republicans take back the house, we will conduct immediate oversight of this justice department attorney general garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar. do you have a response >> first of all, i think the democrats are going to win the house. we've been prepared for it for a long time, and now with what's happening with roe v. wade and the legislation that we are passing, i think that whatever the leader is saying is probably idle but nonetheless, we believe in the rule of law and that's what our country is about and no person is above the law, not even the president of the united states, not even a former president of the united states

>> let's turn now to your visit to taiwan. you made history you were the first speaker to visit in, i guess, more than a generation, 25 years the visit has resulted in considerable blowback and we'll get to that in just a moment my question to you initially is why now? you received briefings, the risks were laid out to you what was the cost benefit analysis you conducted why was it important to make this trip now? >> well, the fact is we were supposed to make it a couple months ago, but because of covid it was postponed i'm very proud of the delegation, the chairman of the foreign affairs committee, mr. meeks, the chairman of the veterans affair committee, mr. takano, the vice chair of the ways and means committee, congresswoman delbene, andy kim of new jersey who was a diplomat before coming to congress as well as congressman raja krishnamoorthi, a member of the intelligence committee it was, like, a six-person co-chair committee

a lot of attention was paid to taiwan and that's right. it was a bigger visit than that. it followed on the president's direction that we would have a focus on the asia-pacific. it also took up his initiative of the indo-pacific economic framework, so we went there to listen it's important for us to have parliamentary to parliamentary exchanges as we, again, go forward with a new initiative. >> madam speaker, just to jump in here -- >> in singapore we had -- in all of the countries -- we thanked the members of asean and our asian friends for their very strong support for the people of ukraine and condemning russia for their invasion in all of the places there, we brought our respect and listened

to what they had to say about how we go forward security-wise, economic-wise, slas well as in h terms of the governance. >> let me just jump in here -- >> taiwan was part of that trip. >> only because time is short, i want to make sure we get into this there are reasons to take a trip like that, but as you well know, especially with foreign policy, national security, it comes down to tradeoffs and timing. was it worth it? now that you see the response. >> absolutely. without any question >> okay. because china has made a series of stunningly aggressive military moves in taiwan i mean, unprecedented in terms of the security of taiwan. was it worth it to make this trip now if that was the response from china? >> i have overwhelming bipartisan support for our visit to taiwan. as speaker of the house and with the distinguished delegation i went there with, we were very well received, thousands of people in the streets, received

by the president of taiwan, buildings with big welcoming to us the people of taiwan welcomed the visit. the chinese government may not have but china will not be allowed to isolate taiwan a few months ago, a couple months ago, a delegation went from the senate. it was bipartisan. it was high-powered including the chairman of the foreign relations committee. nobody said a word nobody said a word did you even know about that trip so i am not going to -- again, as a supporter of democracy in china, but this is about democracy in taiwan. we cannot allow the chinese government to isolate taiwan they say to them you can't go to the world health organization, but they're not going to say who can go to taiwan and, yes, it was worth it. and what the chinese are doing

patient of my father's my father delivered her son emerson, and that's how we originally met then we were both kind of well known around the same time, and i remember having my baby katie. she looked at me one day and held my baby and said, how do you do this? olivia, i know you know how to do that. no, but how do you do this how do you have a career and have a child and so really, i think, our journey was very much that and because, you know, we had a lot of ups and downs with careers and husbands and children and life, we had a very special bond and it was pretty unique for me. i don't think i've ever had a friend that could understand or wanted to understand what that life was like, and i really miss her. >> jane, you mentioned you had the opportunity, the blessing, to visit with her, a short time ago. what was that last conversation like what was she like? >> well, i was with my two sisters from england

she got the day wrong, but she knew we traveled two or three hours to get there and she got out of bed, got dressed, came out on a walker. she should not have gotten out of bed at all, and she just sat down with us for quite a while and asked about us, how were we? how were our lives how could she help us? and then she just looked around and she said, isn't it beautiful here i said, yes, it is she said, i sit out here and just look at the world, how beautiful. i look at the sky, look at the hummingbirds, look at that dog, look at this life that we have and look at us together after all these years. she reminds me and will always remind me every day that life is a journey. it has its ups and downs and she had such strength and fortitude and as much as she was suffering she never spoke about it ever. she put a smile on her face and said i'm thriving.

i'm thriving. >> jane, on that note, there have been a flood of tributes including one from her danny, john travolta, calling her impact incredible. can you talk about that? i know she had her wellness and research center that continues to thrive. >> amazing i actually had the privilege of going to her hospital, the one that she built in melbourne. it was extraordinary she said, well, i have this cancer hospital. it's a major, major cancer hospital and it doesn't just do research and look after people, but there was an atmosphere when you went there, you just went, oh, my gosh, olivia has built the dream place for people who are having to go through the cycle of cancer sadly, i know a lot of people who are going through it right now and don't have anywhere that lovely and then i remember olivia telling me, she said the cancer came back. you'll never guess what. i said what? i ended up in my own hospital. i'm so glad i built it

it was incredible. the room was amazing she just gave back all the time. i mean, i think you know that's the legacy an extraordinary performer you will never forget her from "grease" or anything that she ever did her ability to, at the same time, care so much about other people and make it happen, raise millions and millions and really more than anything open her heart. she said, hey, this is a journey and i'm on it and i'm there with you. >> just a few moments left, jane i'm so struck by her gentleness and her humidity and i was saying earlier that for someone like her, there's a whole generation, especially young girls, our age, for whom she is an icon, who danced in front of the mirror with the hair brush wishing they were olivia newton-john, wanted to be sandy, and she just held that so gracefully and it could have been overwhelming. but she was just always so kind
