hard. who is working hard these folks at niles canyon, working on the roads overnight and should be done with their day. that's great work. i'm in a suit, not bad compared to those folks. the golden gate bridge crew should be just about clearing. we have some cones still on the span itself. no major issues as far as any traffic flow issues. we did see low clouds hovering around the deck of the bay bridge. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we want to move you forward this morning on back to school this fall and speaking of moving forward, many students can move their alarms forward this year an extra half hour. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in livermore. bob, high schools no longer have to start at 8:00 in the morning. the kids are listening to this one. >> reporter: and they're no longer allowed to start at 8:00. back in 2018, california mandated that by july 1st of this year, high schools like livermore high behind me cannot
5:03 am
start school before 8:30 a.m. for middle schools that's 8:00 a.m. this is sb-328 we're talking about, proponents of that bill argued the old 8:00 a.m. start time was bad for teens' mental health and left them sleep deprived. as lessents are biologically different, they stay up late. the american academy of pediatrics agrees teens should not start school before 8:30 in the morning. opponents argued about the impact on school bus routes and parents' work schedules. we spoke with a teenager about to become a junior in fremont who can't wait for the extra half hour of sleep. >> it's not only myself. i do notice a lot of kids in school in first period, they're super sleepy, unable to pay attention, and i personally had my math class in first period, and i saw that a lot of people weren't able to perform their best and my math teacher was
5:04 am
also like first period was usually very low energy compared to the other periods. >> it actually is a public health risk that increases their likelihood for becoming depressed, suffering from anxiety. it increases their suicide risk and we know that teenagers are more likely to get in car accidents when they are sleep deprived and more likely to miss school. >> a number of bay area high school districts like tamapais switched to the 8:30 time last fall. the superintendent tells us the mornings seem to be less frenetic but so far has not seen an increase in attendance as a result. she says they need more time away from the pan demmic to see if the extra half hour is making that much of a difference. >> the beginning of the year, some of the students at the school that had just gone to it were still adjusting. they didn't love it, but just
5:05 am
because they were getting at 3:40 in the afternoon, for some they felt that was a long day, i think particularly in the winter it starts to get dark a little earlier, but overall, we haven't heard a whole lot of complaints. >> reporter: now this new 8:30 start time mandate does not impact zero period, if you're not familiar, zero period is that class time before the official start of the school day. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> as you mentioned, though, it takes some adjustment not just for the kids but for the parents and carpools and sports, practices after school, so we're all going to have some growing pains. >> get the schedules together. >> thanks, bob. happening today, oakland education advocates demanding mandatory covid vaccines, more testing and a virtual education option will hold a car caravan in the east bay, so the caravan will go from oakland's federal building to the district headquarters.
5:06 am
activists oppose the district's recent school closures including parker elementary where parents are currently protesting. the caravan begins at 4:00 p.m. happening now, a new social media outcry and hashtag is urging people to delete their facebook accounts, and this comes in the wake of felony charges filed against a nebraska mother and daughter based on evidence activists say was handed over to authorities by facebook's parent company meta. that evidence allegedly involved direct messages about abortion pills and whether the 17-year-old took one after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which would be illegal under nebraska law. one cal state east bay professor says this proves everyone's privacy is at risk online. >> i think the real story here is the lack of privacy that people have in online spaces, and you don't recognize why you need privacy until it's too late and i think this story is an example of that. >> as for the allegations, meta says in part "nothing in the

leader, looking into why it takes so long and costs so much to build a home. lawmakers say too many hurdles are slowing state requirements for the city to add 82,000 new housing units by the end of the decade. california's housing and development agency says it takes two and a half years on average, two and a half years to get approval and then construction costs are some of the highest anywhere. state senator scott weiner believes the investigation will force the city to approve projects faster. >> san francisco puts so many requirements and etracts so many concessions approving the projects they become financially unfeasible. >> supervisor matt dorsey welcomes that state investigation tweeting "san francisco must make igis cant changes to the way to review, approve and permit and build new howing. we must continue to find funding sources for subsidized affordable housing." san francisco is not alone in this problem.

we are still looking at more of the same weather so take some time out there and enjoy it. mike, you've been giving us a look at what's going on now in the east bay. >> kari, i called this the fremont funnel because 680 and 880 funneled together toward mission where it gets jammed anyway but now on the map the markings there, it's a disabled big rig at 680 south at the mission connector so this is causing a slower drive, i just saw the sensors slow on mission and i see them slowing on 680 as well. i'll get an exact location. i do believe it may be on that connector getting around the area so we'll watch that. the rest of the bay shows a smooth drive, i've circled the only incident i'm concerned about and no major issues through contra costa for the early drive, that county looking really good. back to you. >> thanks, mike. we are getting a new look this morning at the teenaged girl now at the center of a desperate search in sierra. kiely rodni disappeared from an outdoor party attended by hundreds of young people. >> it included a lot of young people from the bay area as well. ginger cone hero saab is in the

have had about 100 tips but no substantial ones from the 200 or 300 people estimated to be at that party. those include teens from nevada all the way here to the bay area. authorities have a very important message to those teens. >> we have no interest in pursuing anybody criminally for engaging in any type of underaged drinking or drug consumption. all we're interested in now is getting kiely back home safely to her parents. she's our top priority. if you're afraid of not getting into college, if you're afraid of going to jail, losing your job, these are not things that forward and help us find kiely. >> extremely important there. now the photo of kiely and the number to the tip line is posted on our website. that number is also at the bottom of your screen. you can remain anonymous with any tips. >> so important for people to look at her and know about her vehicle. we have all of that on our

5:36 am
important, because it does involve a case brought by the attorney general of new york. she's investigating whether the trump organization overstated the value of its holdings when it asked the banks for loans and then understated the values of those same buildings when it came time to pay taxes on this. this is separate from the georgia investigation into trump, the grand jury and the 2020 election, and separate from the justice department's investigation and search warrant at his mar-a-lago home. we now know the search took most of the day, from 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. now it's caused outrage among some republicans. a florida lawmaker suggested florida police officers arrest fbi agents investigating federal crimes in florida, and georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene wants to defund the fbi but it's important to remember what politicians think about the fbi and the doj doesn't really
5:37 am
matter. the doj is an independent body, doesn't have to answer to anybody in party politics. what lindsey graham has to say about the whole thing is interesting to news crews looking for a sound bite. keep in mind, we don't have anywhere near the facts about why the fbi conducted the search in the first place. >> what we don't have right now is the affidavit for the search warrant. we don't know what they asked for and we don't know why they asked for it. >> the one person who could answer that question is donald trump. he knows why. he has a copy of the warrant. he could just show it to the the world. they'll have a lot more coverage on the "today" show. a former president making as much or more news than the current president is tripping, president biden will sign the burn pits bill that expands care to veterans with cancer, yesterday he signed the chips bill into law that will encourage chip companies to
5:38 am
build plants in the united states. right now all the chips are made in taiwan and he signed the papers that give american approval to the entry of sweden and finland into nato. there's still a few countries that need to sign off and then we'll have troops on the largest land border with russia, a putin nightmare of his own making and certainly we expect the white house will be celebrating the most recent inflation numbers, a big part of what we're expecting is the fall of gas prices, more than 60 straight days of declines on gas prices. kris? >> thank you, scott. san francisco general plans to reopen its monkeypox vaccine walk-up clinic at 8:00 this morning. kaiser, ucf and sutter will still only do shots by appointment only. contra costa county is now reporting 31 monkeypox cases, which is far less than san francisco with more than 500. alameda county is now over 100 cases. santa clara county not too far
5:39 am
behind. all of them rank in the top ten counties statewide with total cases now surpassing 1,300. moving you forward on back-to-school and school safety, it is surely atop of the minds of many students and teachers and when it comes to the debate about police in schools, districts are taking different approaches. there's still evidence showing that armed officers made many public schools safer and in some cases prevented mass shootings but the other data shows that armed officers sometimes led to violent responses from officers. in response, some districts including oakland, san francisco, and west contra costa removed sworn law enforcement from k through 12 campuses. in the meantime, berkecally schools are committed to keeping armed officers on campus. >> we have a school resource officer program where each of our high schools has a school resource officer and they also support the attendance area schools and so in conjunction with the fremont police
