6:01 am
laura garcia has the morning off. it is another big day for back to school. kari will look at the school stop, the bus stop forecast. mike, you've been following big trouble on the been been. >> folks, turn to the screen even if you don't go to the bay bridge which is looking like this right now. look at the ambulance, paramedics truck, a number of chp. we're talking about this crash. they just have the hov lanes blocked and traffic is relatively light after a full traffic break causing a big backup. over here the ambulance and tow trucks over here. look at this video, this is from earlier this morning, not too long ago, the smoke here and this is the crash vehicle. someone's running across and there are a couple of vehicles, close calls over there. there's another vehicle here in the trees and so both vehicles have injuries as we get back to the live shot, you saw all the vehicles have been cleared from the toll plaza itself but they do have all those chp vehicles and the ambulance there taking care of injuries at the toll plaza and distraction. from our other view from
6:02 am
emeryville, the flashing lights, kari look at the streaming cars making their way past that so that's not causing a backup yet. we'll watch as the volume builds and track injuries. over to you. i wanted to show you another view of the beautiful sunrise over san francisco as we wake up and head out on this wednesday morning. more kids going back to school today for martinez, it will be 60 degrees at drop-off time, nice and comfortable and sunshine at pickup time, hopefully you do have a nice day and perfect for those first day of school pictures. as we look across our microclimates, headed for the upper 70s in san mateo, mountain view 77 and also 77 in hayward and oakland with upper 80s for the south county. we'll talk about some warmer temperatures in our forecast, it's coming up in a few minutes. marcus and kris? >> thanks, kari. we want to move you forward with back to school this fall and speaking of moving forward, many students can go ahead and move their alarms forward this year an extra half hour. i think that says a lot. >> back in the day, i would have been like tell me more!
6:03 am
"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in livermore. bob, high schooled no longer allowed to start school at 8:00. >> reporter: you are correct. back in 2019 most schools like the one mind me cannot start class before 8:30, middle school 8:00 a.m., there are exceptions for schools located in the rural areas. for most high schools in the bay area, this applies this them. this is sb-328 we're talking about, proponents of that bill argued the old 8:00 a.m. start time was bad for teens' mental health and left them sleep deprived. ed alezents are biologically different from us adults, they stay up late and need to wake up later. the american academy of pediatrics agrees teens should not start school before 8:30 in the morning. opponents argued about the impact on school bus routes and things like
6:04 am
parents' work schedules. and trying to carpool and whatnot. we spoke with a teenager about to become a junior at mission high in fremont, who can't wait for the extra half hour of sleep. >> it's not only myself. i do notice a lot of kids in school in first period, they're super sleepy, unable to pay attention, and i personally had my math class in first period, and i saw that a lot of people weren't able to perform their best and my math teacher was also like first period was usually very low energy compared to the other periods. >> it actually is a public health risk that increases their likelihood for becoming depressed, suffering from anxiety. it increases their suicide risk and we know that teenagers are more likely to get in car accidents when they are sleep deprived and more likely to miss school. >> reporter: a number of bay
6:05 am
area high school districts like tamalpias union high, they switched to the 8:30 time last fall. the superintendent who agrees with the later start time tells us that the mornings seem to be less frenetic but so far has not seen an increase in attendance she says they need more time away from the pandemic to see if the extra half hour is making that much of a difference. >> the beginning of the year, some of the students at the school that had just gone to it were still adjusting. they didn't love it, but just because they were getting at 3:40 in the afternoon, for some they felt that was a long day, i think particularly in the winter it starts to get dark a little earlier, but overall, we haven't heard a whole lot of complaints. >> reporter: this new 8:30 start time mandate does not impact zero period, if you're not familiar, zero period is that time slot right before the regular class schedule begins. reporting live here in livermore, bob redell, "today in
6:06 am
the bay." >> thank you, bob. 6:05. happening today, oakland education ad kates demanding mandatory covid testing, virtual education options, will hold a car caravan from the oakland building to the district's headquarters. advocates oppose the recent school closures including parker elementary, where parents are currently protesting. the kara ran begins at 4:00 p.m. a new social media outcry and hashtag urging people to delete their facebook accounts in the wake of felony charges filed against a nebraska mother and daughter based on evidence activists say was handed over by facebook's parent company meta. the evidence involved direct messages about abortion pills and whether the 17-year-old took one after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which is illegal under nebraska law. one cal state east bay professor
6:07 am
says this proves everyone's privacy is at risk online. >> i think the real story here is the lack of privacy that people have in online spaces, and you don't recognize why you need privacy until it's too late and i think this story is an example of that. >> as for the allegations, meta says in part "nothing in the valid warrants we received from local law enforcement in early june, prior to the supreme court decision, mentioned abortion. the warrants concerned charges related to a criminal investigation and court documents indicate that police at the time were investigating the case of a stillborn baby who was burned and buried, not a decision to have an abortion." happening today, a south bay martial arts instructor accused of sexually assaulting a minor is due in court for a plea hearing. police arrested ernest ramirez in june. he is accused of reportedly sexually assaulting a girl under 1 for nearly two years ago. ramirez owned the extreme
6:08 am
martial arts studio on elm street in downtown san jose and also ran an elementary afterschool program. investigators say he met the victim. according to "the mercury news" he denied all accusations. developing this morning, a live look at san francisco, where state leaders are now looking into why it takes so long and costs so much to build a home. lawmakers say there are too many hurdles are slowing state requirements for the city to add 82,000 new housing units by the end of the decade. california's housing and development agency says it takes two and a half years on average, to get approval and construction costs are some of the highest anywhere. state senator scott weiner believes the investigation will force the city to approve projects faster. >> san francisco puts so many requirements and extracts so many concessions approving the projects they become financially unfeasible. >> san francisco's supervisor
6:09 am
matt dorsey welcomes that state investigation tweeting "san francisco must make significant changes to the way to review, approve and permit and build new housing. we must continue to find funding sources for subsidized affordable housing." san francisco is not the only city with this problem. our investigative unit has been looking into the bay area housing crisis for years. to watch those reports go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the investigations tab. it's 6:09 on this wednesday morning. a live look at dublin, look at the sunrise there, beautiful way to start out this wednesday. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect from temperatures across the bay area and i'm hoping for another pleasant day, kari. >> it's another great one and we're starting out with sunshine across more spots in the bay area. a live look in san jose, we are starting out clear and also going to have the first day of schools for san ramon valley, happy thursday. hopefully it's a very nice one, at least temperatures are going to hold up.
6:10 am
we're in the low 60s to start and it will be at about 80 degrees with sunshine at pickup time later today. take a look at all of our microclimates, and we're basically matching where we were yesterday if you enjoyed that, you'll have another really pleasant day, but it is starting to heat up for some of those inland valleys. mike, where can we find some lower gas prices? >> we've done our check again today as we do most weekdays and gas buddy lists prices under five bucks a gallon at a number of bay area spots. sunnyvale on national at old san francisco road we found gas for $4.84 per gallon. arco in brentwood on brentwood boulevard we found some for $4.97 a gallon and along the coast, interstate gasoline in half moon bay on kelly avenue, we found $4.99 for gas. out to the maps, a smooth drive for the green sensors that earlier roadside fire in oakland has been cleared but there may be one lane blocked at 29th. the big concern is the bay bridge. doesn't look bad on the map with the speed sensors. the live look shows you the
6:11 am
activity starting to clear. good news, the hov lanes flares burned out. all the chp activity, you've got to come back i want to show you the video of what happened and the near misses there at the toll plaza, but right now we have the backup that is starting to form with the metering lights. back to you. >> all right, thank you, mike. maybe you didn't realize the power you have sitting in the palm of your hand. next on "today in the bay," the nearly seamless checkout available at more amazon stores and the bay area locations where you'll find it. well, speaking of hands of good, inflation report we just got that and a good jobs report on friday mean a one-two punch for the economy. look at the futures, dow going to rise more than 400 points. nasdaq on fire. first our back-to-school segment continues. we have been talking about and showing you the morning announcements from nbc bay area and bay area school superintendents. >> good morning, everyone. my name is dr. kyla
6:12 am
johnson-trammel, and i'm the superintendent of the oakland unified school district. we are so excited to be able to welcome all of our students back to school on monday, august 8th. now remember, we're still working through a pandemic and so masks are strongly encouraged. we will continue to do everything that we need to do to keep all of our staff and students safe. i'd like to give a shout out to all of our staff and so many of our partners who have helped us prepare for the first day, making sure students have backpacks and that everyone is ready for the first day. looking forward to seeing you there. >> and we are showing different bay area school districts all week long here on "today in the bay" and you can view all of the superintendents, maybe you missed yours this week, head over to nbcbayarea.com and see it there.
6:13 am
6:14 am
6:15 am
. good wednesday morning. the time is 6:15. happy first day of school for mountain view los altos high school district. if you're loading up the lunch and the backpack, we see temperatures in the low 60s to start. at pickup time, it will be a perfect 78 degrees and sunny. a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast, coing up. >> from emeryville toward the bay bridge toll plaza, the backup what we'd expect but in the parking lot, look, lots of flashing lights. another flatbed tow truck and
6:16 am
more updates on injuries from chp. i've got video you've got to see of this near miss, thank goodness it wasn't worse. good morning. very happy wednesday to you. tesla says elon musk has sold yet more tesla stock, around $7 billion worth. he said he wasn't going to sell any more but on social media, he says he was worried that if a judge made him buy twitter as he had agreed to do, he'd have to have "emergency sale" of tesla stock. before this whole buying twitter debacle, shares in tesla were above $100. we got the latest price data. the consumer price index shows prices rose 8.5% in july, less than last month. that's good news. it's an even bigger drop than economists expected. falling gas prices a big part of that. how we speak about this affects the direction of this arrow.
6:17 am
we are paying more than we were last year. that's an up arrow but there's less inflation now than there was last month, so inflation is easing. really both arrows are accurate. as we were talking about this earlier this week and this morning, a good inflation number combined with last week's blockbuster job numbers is really good news followed by good news. and investors have noticed. they're ready to buy as we look at the futures, 15 minutes before the open. marcus and kris, i want to introduce to you shaan gandhi, an investor in biotech, but the really interesting thing about him is he was a rhodes scholar, went to oxford and harvard med and business school which would be impressive but listen to this, he went to harvard med and business at the same time. when i interviewed him, i asked him what does it feel like to be that smart? we had a bit of an argument over how smart he is. what does it feel like to be that smart?
6:18 am
not just a rhodes scholarship but what does it feel like inside your head, and we have established you're smart. >> i will have to deny it formally. >> objective evidence, you're a rhodes scholar who went to harvard -- >> i get proven every day that i am not that smart. >> that just means you're stretching yourself. >> fair enough. fair enough. >> you're not picking up your socks -- >> everybody does something wrong at some point, right? >> exactly but learn from our mistakes, very important. you can hear the whole thing on the podcast sand hill road and hear it on google play and amazon and everything else. it's great fun. we go into what is it like to be that smart but where does it come from? in your parents smart, of course he says yes. how much of it was your parents and how much of it was the way they raised you. >> where you went to school. >> maybe they were hands off and it came from nowhere. an interesting conversation. >> no other news scott won the
6:19 am
argument against -- >> the smart guy. >> so that makes you smart and good looking. >> oh. amazon is expanding its palm scanning technology to more whole foods stores. more than 60 california location also offer that payment service which amazon first introduced in 2020. whole foods tested it in los angeles, in austin and seattle, and new york. right now it's offered at three san francisco amazon go convenience stores. palm print using a kiosk or point-of-sale station at participating stores and they can buy and walk away. trending this morning, whether you like steak, green eggs and ham on your plate, the next story is about a prime piece of southern california real estate. >> the home of dr. seuss now for sale, located in la jolla, near san diego and it is the first time that it's being listed in more than 70 years. so the four-bedroom, four-bath
6:20 am
home is where dr. seuss wrote some of his most famous creations and it was gifted to uc san diego in 2019. now the campus is selling the four-acre property for nearly $19 million. at first i thought it was $1.9 million, no, $19 million. >> wow. >> beautiful area, so i'm not surprised. >> being dr. seuss' house i expected more twists. >> like the house in hillsborough. >> right. >> i expected that. we're going to look at the forecast and get to mike in a bit. we know you've been tracking big trouble on the bay bridge. >> you have to see the video. >> unbelievable. at least things are nice for folks. >> it's fairly calm here. we've had some really nice weather from the weekend into the start of the week. that continues today. let's take a live look outside at the busy day we have starting in oakland, and weall, our temp have been nice and comfortable,
6:21 am
happy first day of school for pleasanton, as we start out of and clouds but it's going to be another really pleasant day. you'll want to enjoy more time out at the park, at pickup time our temperatures will be at about 82 degrees. livermore reaching 86 today so some spots are feeling just a little bit warmer, compare that to the 79 in san jose, and 77 in hayward. san francisco reaching the low 70s. tomorrow, santa rosa reaches 86 degrees and some of our valley temperatures will be hotter, a few more spots reaching 90 degrees like concord and morgan hill. we'll keep the 70s for up and down the peninsula and inner bay and on friday it's also going to be wide-ranging as far as our temperatures from the coast to the innland areas. but as far as our overall weather pattern, there won't be much of a change here as far as our pressure system but that
6:22 am
monsoon moisturethn california the sierra. up so take a look at concord, going from the upper 80s today to the mid-90s as the temperatures peak early next week. overall our seven-day forecast just does show a slight warming trend over the next seven days but that sunshine continues, while san francisco will keep that coastal fog and highs in the upper 60s. mike, what's the update at the bay bridge? >> kari, first i want folks to look at the screen, this is dust and steam from a crash, this vehicle and another in the trees involved in the crash. look at this person running, oh, one car, two cars, almost one there, lots of near misses for this person. now when you get to the scene, emergency personnel will tell to you stay by the vehicle because of visibility and then of course that smoke and the steam and the dust. now the good news is that person made it to the parking lot all right and as we look at the live situation over there, all these lanes have filled in and all the activity is pretty much cleared from lanes but we still have three other injuries reported for that crash so we're tracking
6:23 am
that. the backup at the toll plaza though is back to about standard what you'd expect. the guys after that crash at the bay bridge made very quick work of that, ambulance and paramedics on the scene as well been we thank all of our emergency responders and that commute is pretty calm. back to you. >> that is scary. 6:23 for you. next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds."fuand games, your kid's tablet might be an open door for bad days. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll have this year's first back-to-school lesson text.
6:24 am
6:25 am
back-to-school lesson text. for years, california's non-gaming tribes have been left in the dust. wealthy tribes with big casinos make billions, while small tribes struggle in poverty. prop 27 is a game changer. 27 taxes and regulates online sports betting to fund permanent solution to homelessness. while helping every tribe in california. so who's attacking prop 27? wealthy casino tribes who want all the money for themselves support small tribes, address homelessness. vote yes on 27.
6:26 am
it 16:25 this morning. this week our "responds" team is helping families get ready to go back to school. >> we are grateful for it. consumer investigator chris chmura has a tech talk for us, including an assignment for parents. we're listening. >> the first lesson of the new school year is about bad guys on the internet. they are targeting kids' technology. >> you have to take it seriously. for everyone in the family. >> reporter: kim key is a security analyst at "pc" magazine. she writes a weekly newsletter called "security watch." kim says do not brush off the kids' tablet or the kids' laptop as homework machines you can just ignore. >> a lot of times children's devices are not secured the way parental devices are and quite frankly, malicious actors know that. >> reporter: here is how a cyber attack happens. your kid's online doing a class assignment or gaming, someone
6:27 am
sends them a link, and they click it. infects all of why you are y t extortion. what do you do? talk with your kids about being safe online, distrusting strangers, keeping passwords secret and not clicking on unknown links. life lessons. >> because unfortunately, cyber security really isn't taught in a lot of public schools. >> reporter: and make sure the kids tech is running up-to-date software with the new patches for vulnerabilities and then make sure all their devices have passwords and anti-virus protection. >> gamers don't want to have lag but oh, man, you need the safety aspect. >> reporter: tomorrow a closer look at back-to-school shopping. what's happening behind the scenes at the stores and how you can maximize your savings. see you then. coming up, we've got the new
6:28 am
details on missing teenager kiely rodni. still ahealed the new photo
6:29 am
large out-of-state corporations have set their sights on california. they've written prop 27, to allow online sports betting.
6:30 am
they tell us it will fund programs for the homeless. but read prop 27's fine print. 90% of profits go to out-of-state corporations, leaving almost nothing for the homeless. no real jobs are created here. but the promise between our state and our sovereign tribes would be broken forever. these out-of-state corporations don't care about california. but we do. stand with us. somebody has to know out of the 200 to 300 people, somebody has to know where kiely went. >> right now at s missing teenager kiely rodni? this morning, the search in
6:31 am
tahoe deepens. the new images investigators want to you see and message for anyone attending the party where she was last seen. just days after the fbi searched his florida home, donald trump testifies in an investigation in new york. a back-to-school debate over oncampus police officers. the fine line school leaders are walking and keeping their districts secure and safe and making students feel safe about themselves as well. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we want to get you started with the day with a look at what you can expect today. >> whoa! >> we have some to get to but did you catch this beautiful sight this morning? >> i did. it was shining through the window and my eyes. >> woke you up. >> good thing. >> this is not from kris' picture. nearly a full moon there. later this week the full moon could cause issues for anyone
6:32 am
trying to get a glimpse of the long-awaited meteor shower. we'll talk about the best time coming up for you later this morning at 6:45. >> timing is everything. we want to head over to meteorologist kari hall, what can we expect as more kids head to the bus stop today, kari? >> it's another great day for kids starting out their first day. we have a clear sky over dublin and just about to see the sun coming over the hills there with that clear view this morning, as you head out the door. first day of school for martinez, happy first day to the kids there and we'll start out at 60 degrees, mostly sunny morning and comfortable at pickup time with upper 70s. we'll look at more school districts and microclimates coming up but looks calmer. >> much calmer but i have to correct my own papers first day of school for many top of the screen, i misspelled bridge. that's my fault. i was in a rush, i wanted to show this camera angle. the backup at the toll plaza fewer flashing lights.
6:33 am
the earlier crash cleared in lanes at the bay bridge and earlier backup. the big disturbance calmed down to your normal commute. 37, highway 4 and the bay bridge toll plaza with the slower drive. around the rest of the bay is a mild drive as many, many schools come back on the last couple of days. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we are getting a new look this morning at the teenaged girl now at the center of a desperate search in the sierra. kiely rodni disappeared from a late outdoor party attended by hundreds of young people. >> some of those were from the bay area. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab has a new look at the surveillance image and the desperate plea for information. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, kris and marcus. this is surveillance photo released yesterday evening by the placer county sheriff of 16-year-old kiely rodni, last
6:34 am
seen five days ago, seen wearing a black spaghetti strapped body suit, green pants, a black belt and black sneakers, it was taken friday night at 6:00, before she disappeared. the chp and federal agents are searching a heavily-wooded area for any clues on kiely or her silver crv. volunteers are joining 16 different agencies in the search. yesterday they gathered to pray for her safe return. new details from the night she disappeared detectives say the last time her phone pinged was a half hour past midnight august 6th. the sheriff's office says they have had more than 100 tips but no substantial ones from the 200 to 300 estimated people at the party which included teens from nevada all the way to the bay area. authorities have this very important message for those teens or parents of those teens. >> we have no interest in pursuing anybody criminally for engaging in any type of
6:35 am
underaged drinking or drug consumption. all we're interested in now is getting kiely back home safely to her parents. she's our top priority. if you're afraid of not getting into college, if you're afraid of going to jail, losing your job, these are nothi tngs that are going to happen if you step forward and help us find kiely. >> it's really that photo. you can see a smaller one here but the bigger one on our website as well as a number to a tip line that's all going to be there, that number is also on the bottom of your screen now. you can remain anonymous if you have any tips. so go ahead and take a good look at that photo and call in with any information. marcus and kris? >> thank you, ginger. we are continuing our coverage on the search for kiely rodni online. go to nbcbayarea.com and find a link to the surveillance photo and description of her car on our home page in the trending bar. breaking news now, while you were sleeping, former president trump will testify in new york today in a civil trial brought by the attorney general in new york. >> scott mcgrew, deposition,
6:36 am
testimony, not trump's strong points here. >> it really isn't, good morning to you. we know this because we've seen taped depositions from trump before. he was involved in lawsuits a number of times as a new york developer, sometimes had a hard time sticking to the facts. here's a deposition from 2016, had to do with a restaurant backing out of a real estate teal. 2007 he overstated a number of things under oath including how many employees he had and even the height of a building. today's testimony far more important, because it does involve a case brought by the attorney general of new york. she's investigating whether the trump organization overstated the value of its holdings when it asked the banks for loans and then understated the values of those same buildings when it came time to pay taxes on this. this is separate from the georgia investigation into trump, the grand jury and the 2020 election, and separate from
6:37 am
the justice department's investigation and search warrant at his mar-a-lago home. we now know the search took most of the day, from 9:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on truth social this morning, trump implied the fbi planted evidence and pretended to find it, so we know he knows they found something important. a florida lawmaker suggested florida police officers arrest fbi agents investigating federal crimes in florida, and georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene wants to defund the fbi but it's important to remember what politicians think about the fbi and the doj doesn't really matter. the department of justice is an independent body, it doesn't have to answer to party politics. what lindsey graham has to say about the whole thing is interesting to news crews looking for a sound bite. but otherwise has no effect. keep in mind, we don't have anywhere near the facts about
6:38 am
why the fbi conducted the search in the first place. >> what we don't have right now is the affidavit for the search warrant. we don't know what they asked for and we don't know why they asked for it. >> the one person who could answer that question is donald trump. he knows why. he has a copy of the warrant. he could just show it to the world. they'll have a lot more coverage on the "today" show at 7:00. a former president making as much or more news than the current president is tricky, because there are other things you need to know about, today president biden will sign the burn pits bill that expands care to veterans with cancer, yesterday he signed the chips bill into law that will encourage chip companies to build fab plants here in the united states. right now all the advanced chips are designed by american companies and made in taiwan. he also signed the papers that give american approval to the entry of sweden and finland into nato. there's still a few countries that need to sign off and then
6:39 am
we'll have nato troops right on the land border with russia. this is a putin nightmare of his own making and certainly we expect the white house will be celebrating the latest inflation numbers showing a significant decline from last month. more than economists expected, falling gas prices a major factor. >> thank you, scott. san francisco plans to open its monkeypox vaccine walkup clinic at 8:00 this morning. kaiser, ucf and sutter will continue to could shots but appointment only. contra costa county is now reporting 31 monkeypox cases, which is fewer than san francisco with more than 500. alameda county is now over 100 cases. santa clara county not too far behind. all of them rank in the top ten counties in the state with total cases now surpassing 1,300. moving you forward on back-to-school and school safety, it is surely atop of the minds of many students and teachers and when it comes to the debate about police in schools, districts are taking
6:40 am
different approaches. there's still evidence showing that armed officers made many public schools safer and in some cases prevented mass shootings but the other data shows that armed officers sometimes led to violent responses from officers. in response, some districts including oakland, san francisco, and west contra costa removed sworn law enforcement from k through 12 campuses. meantime, fremont and berkeley schools are committed to keeping armed officers on campus. >> we have a school resource officer program where each of our high schools has a school resource officer and they also support the attendance area schools and so in conjunction with the fremont police department, we make sure that we are up to date on our response protocols and our training for any unanticipated, unexpected emergency situation. >> and as we've been mentioning, all this week, we are covering everything you need to know, as your child or
6:41 am
children head back to school. go to our website nbcbayarea.com to find important information from school districts, including the new start times and protocols. taking a live look at san jose, look it's the municipal rose garden. i love that. my kids were mortified one day because there was a wedding and they were crying and taking pictures. it wasn't anybody i knew. kari, a beautiful day to go out and smell the roses. >> that's where we took bella for her first birthday, the push thing and we had great pictures there. let's get a live look in san francisco. we also have a beautiful view, a few low clouds rolling by the city as the sun shines under the clouds and gives us colorful hues to the sky. happy first day of school for the san ramon valley unified school district, it's 60 degrees as you head out the door and a nice comfortably warm 80 degrees at pickup time between 2:00 to
6:42 am
