but i do want to share, you do know that the mental health of children and children of color in particular are really increasing. >> right now at 4:30, focusing on mental health, as students continue to head back to school. we're breaking down some of the struggles they're facing and the simple steps you can take to help them get off to a good start. vice president kamala harris making her bay area rounds. the message she is sending on reproductive rights and the leaders she's set to meet with today. also, the weekend is just about here. meteorologist kari hall is looking ahead, tracking your weekend forecast. mike has gas prices in case you want to get away.
4:31 am
this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> good morning to you on this friday. thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your start to the weekend. i'm marcus washington. >> are we starting the weekend? >> you better believe it. >> laura is starting the weekend. she's off today so you got me, i'm kris sanchez. thanks so much for joining us. we're going to take a look at the roadways this early friday morning but we want to start with a look at the forecast. >> it looks pretty good once again. we've really had a nice week around the bay area. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, we are starting out with our usual clouds and we'll temperatures around our microclimates starting to spread out once again. san francisco will reach a high of 71 degrees and 84 novato. we'll see the temperatures in the east bay up to 81 in dublin but 78 degrees in san jose, and some spots it's going to be slightly cooler, compared to what we had yesterday afternoon, but we are going to have a very
4:32 am
warm weekend for some of our inland valleys, so we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you were having an alert for san francisco? >> yes, we're going to shout out the south. this has been going on for over an hour, north 101, only one lane is open, this is a critical point until it splits with the bay bridge eastbound 80 going past the downtown area or over toward van ness, just before that split is where the crash has happened. it sounds like chp is doing traffic control after some other law enforcement agency had an issue that ended up on the freeway. we're not exactly sure when they're going to clear lanes. chp early on said to use 280 as an alternate. i see a little slowing coming to the area, maybe signs are being lit up or perhaps there's a quick traffic break. the rest of the commute is moving smoothly. over to you. >> thanks, mike. the stakes getting dramatically higher in the showdown between former president trump and the justice department. this is over the search of his mar-a-lago home. attorney general merrick garland has asked a judge to release information from the warrant and
4:33 am
details about what was seized. "the washington post" this morning reporting that the fbi was looking for documents related to nuclear weapons. no comments so far from the trump team, but today is the deadline to decide if that warrant will be unsealed. mr. trump's attorneys have until noon or our time to say okay or object to making that warrant public. on his social media platform truth social, mr. trump writes in part "not only will i not oppose the release of documents, i'm going a step farther by encouraging the immediate release of those documents." vice president kamala harris this morning continues her bay area visit later this morning. she's set to meet with oakland mayor libby schaaf. "today in the bay" gia vang reports. >> reporter: the vp will be in oakland and the mayor will announce a $15 billion boost to help local public students
4:34 am
called the generation fund. today it was all about abortion rights. vice president kamala harris sending a clear message at this roundtable in san francisco, the woman's right to choose is under attack with at east ten states that outright baned abortions and more are expected to follow. >> i am here today to talk to, to listen to these extraordinary californians who are national leaders to talk about how we can continue to do what has been happening here, which is to fight for the rights of women for all people. >> reporter: the vice president thanking local and state leaders, some who were in the room like state senator nancy skinner. >> so she talked about some of the executive orders that the president has made to protect access to abortion, to protect medication abortions, to protect the providers and also our privacy. >> reporter: harris' stop in the bay is part of a national tour
4:35 am
political experts think is also a tactic to win over democratic voters in the midterms and larry gerston -- >> the border is a mess all the way around. this is tight and narrow and something she truly believes in and from a state that truly believes in a women's right to choose. she's running with this. >> reporter: voters will vote for themselves as a constitutional amendment to protection abortion rights in california is on the ballot. gia vang for "today in the bay." as more bay area students return to class, many feel anxious, parents, teachers, coachers, we are helping our kids overcome very big feelings. joining us now is dr. sharmane jackman. thanks for joining us. let's talk about why it's so
4:36 am
important to meet kids where they are when it comes to their feelings. >> absolutely, and thank you for having me. so one of the things that i always say, think about back-to-school, the academics, the masks, the reading and writing but another skill is lifelong skills in schools, the children's emotional literacy, and that is the ability to name and express your feelings positively, so that helps with problem-solving. it helps children communicate their feelings. it helps them build positive relationships, build good self-esteem. >> here in the bay area we are a diverse community. what can you tell us about what the study finds about how childrens needs are different?
4:37 am
>> yes, so unfortunately the results are still not in quite yet but i want to share we do know the mental health of children and children of color in particular are really increasing. you know, part of that has come out of the pandemic, but children's mental health has always been an area that has not gotten as much attention as it deserves. what we're seeing is some of the data, that children, black children in particular ages 5 to 12 have increases in suicide and those are doubling that of white children. we know from the structural issues, racism, police brutality, those are things that can play on the part in our culture, in our collective experiences, and also connect to collective trauma. we also know that communities of color have also had inequities in access to mental health and medical services. >> children of all ages have feelings obviously but i think,
4:38 am
i understand that you say middle school's a really good time to kind of get in there with your kids or the kids that you're coaching or the kids in your classrooms to kind of get them on the path toward talking about them? >> absolutely, and i'll just, you know, confess, i'm a mom of a middle schooler. >> me, too! >> and you know, that -- >> actually, no, high schoolers now. >> high schoolers, right, so you've been there. so if i need some tips from you -- but you know, this is a time, there's so much going on for them in their bodies, in their minds, they're navigating puberty, they're thinking about identity, and they need resources of accurate information. they can often turn to their friends for information or social media, which you know those are not necessarily the most accurate sources of information or on line with your family values, so this is really an opportune time to build relationships with your children
4:39 am
so that they know you are a trusted resource, that you can come to them regardless of what's on their mind. >> i did speak with dr. jackman will so much more including a tool kit that you can use at home if you want to see the full interview, you can watch it on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online, download the nbc bay area streaming app, under the "must see" playlist. making the call to ramp things up. ahead on "today in the bay," apple's new message to its suppliers about boosting iphone production. and wanted, one of america's largest pharmacy chains wants to largest pharmacy chains wants to hire you, the new

happy friday to you. right now, the time is 4:41. as you're getting ready to head to work, we are starting out mostly clear, may even see some meteors flying through the sky this morning. temperatures in the low 60s, as we head through the rest of today, our temperatures slowly warm up. it's going to be another really nice one. make some plans to get outside. we'll talk about the weekend forecast coming up. >> ooh, meteors, want to listen to more about that. this is right around hospital curve in san francisco, i've drawn the arrow northbound 101 approaching the bay bridge. the good news it's completely clear, the bad news outside of the camera range the alert continues blocking most of the highway for the bay shore freeway. first let's check in with courtney.
4:43 am
>> good morning, i am courtney reagan from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher after the markets gave up most of their late gains in the session yesterday. stocks rallied following another positive report on inflation, which showed producer prices fell last month due to a slide in energy prices. the dow and s&p 500 closing flat on the day while the in as dak ended in the red. the s&p and nasdaq are on track for their fourth straight positive week. in focus import prices and consumer sentiment. apple is asking its suppliers to make at least as many iphones as they did last year. bloomberg reports apple expects them to make about 00 million total iphones this year and this could suggest apple is confident it will be able to withstand a slowing global economy, supply chain disruptions and other issues and still drive demand for its devices. well greens is offering new pharmacists a $75,000 signing bonus as it struggles to fill the positions. the labor department says pharmacists earn an average of more than $128,000 last year. the average bid for a walgreens

happy friday. it's going to be another nice one, hopefully you've enjoyed the weather we've had throughout the week. it's going to pretty much be the same today. let's take a live look outside in oakland as you're waking up and heading out. you'll already have a lot of company out there and we're seeing a mostly clear sky as we are also going through a meteor shower at this point, and we're seeing temperatures in the low 60s. there's a few clouds around the city and we'll see the clouds continue through sunrise and temperatures in the low 60s to start, but then as we go toward late morning, slowly starting to warm up, but overall, a nice and comfortable day. in oakland, we'll see a high of 77 degrees and 71 in san francisco. some low 80s for napa, and 81 in dublin today, while san jose will see those temperatures headed for the upper 70s, so that's actually a little bit
4:48 am
cooler than it was yesterday. we also had some low 90s in the south county but this afternoon we're in the upper 80s, not much better but it does get slightly hotter again tomorrow, especially in fairfield, where the temperature hits 96 degrees but we're staying mild near the coastline, and parts of the inner bay with some upper 70s and low 80s. let's talk about that meteor shower. it's peaking this morning and again tomorrow morning, although you may still be able to see some meteors streaking across the sky, any morning over the next several days but this is the peak, if you get out there and let your eyes ajust and kind of look away from the full sturgeon monday we have going on that's going to keep some of the meteors from being advise inat times, but you still may be able to see 50 to 100 an hour if you're patient and we are going to see as we head toward next week, more clouds moving in. notice the green here, that's the monsoon moisture starting to surge closer to the bay area, and all of this is dry air that will continue throughout the
4:49 am
weekend into early next week but as that monsoon moisture comes back, so, too, will the heat so let's check out ukiah, reaching the low 90s today, upper 90s for the weekend, but check out how hot it's going to be next week. we're getting ready for some of our inland valleys to reach the triple digits on wednesday, and it's still going to be pretty hot even into next weekend but the temperatures do come down slightly. looking at that seven-day forecast, mostly upper 80s/low 90s for the next few days, but once again, upper 90s and some of our hottest spots will reach over 100 degrees, while san francisco will come from the upper 60s to the mid-70s, not a huge change there but at least we are seeing still our microclimates in full effect. mike, you were looking at the approach to the bay bridge. >> we have one of the cameras caltrans provides us for access northbound 101, it is jammed at 23rd, just south of where the crash is, so you see all the cars backing up, one, two, three, four lanes. the issue is there continues to
4:50 am
be an investigation, so chp is doing a traffic control through the area. as we look at the map you'll see exactly where that is, just shy of where 101 splits to the bay bridge or over toward van ness through city streets. there's cesar chavez. it almost goes back to the 101/280 interchange. chp about an hour and a half ago said get over to 280 as the alternate until they're allowed to clear the scene for the investigation that's going on. we don't know when that will be. chp is only handling the traffic control so we're efforting more information in the newsroom, but we know that everything outside of that area is moving very smoothly. so we'll track again northbound 101 as you're jammed up approaching just one lane open, just shy of the bay bridge split. if you're able to get over to the city on city streets, any of the accesses over toward the lower deck eastbound 80, those are fine once you get there. you're clear over to the east bay. back to you. >> thanks, mike.
