joining us now is dr. charmain jackman. thanks for joining us. let's talk about why it's so important to meet kids where they are when it comes to their feelings. >> absolutely, and thank you for having me. so one of the things that i always say, think about back-to-school, the academics, the masks, the reading and writing but another skill is lifelong skills in schools, the children's emotional literacy, and that is the ability to name and express your feelings positively, so that helps with problem-solving. it helps children communicate their feelings. it helps them build positive relationships, build good self-esteem. >> here in the bay area we are a diverse community. what can you tell us about what the study finds about how childrens needs are different? >> yes, so unfortunately thenoi yet but i want to share we do know the mental health of children and children of color in particular are really increasing. you know, part of that has come out of the pandemic, but children's mental health has always been an area that has not gotten as much attention as it deserves. what we're seeing is some of the data, is that children, black children in particular ages 5 to

identity, and they need resources of accurate information. they can often turn to their friends for information or social media, which you know those are not necessarily the most accurate sources of information or on line with your family values, so this is really an opportune time to build relationships with your children so that they know you are a trusted resource, that you can come to them regardless of what's on their mind. >> i did speak with dr. jackman about so much more, including a tool kit that you can use at home to talk with your kids, if you're a little stuck. sometimes it happens. if you want to see the full interview, you can watch it on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and download the nbc bay area streaming app, under the "must see" playlist. 6:48 for you this morning. you remember the movie "jaws" how scared you were with that? imagine this, a monterey man opening up about his close encounter with a shark this
