trump with a defiant statement writing in part, not only will i not oppose the release of documents related to monday's fbi search at his mar-a-lago estate, but i'm going a step further by encouraging the immediate release of the revelation about what federal investigators were looking for at mar-a-lago. according to the "washington post," but not confirmed by nbc news, classified documents related to nuclear weapons were among the items fbi agents sought when they searched the former president's florida estate. the post cited sources familiar with the investigation. mr. trump calling the revelation a hoax this morning. his lawyer pressed overnight. >> is it your understanding that there were not documents related to our nuclear capabilities, or nuclear issues that had national security implications in the president's possession when the agents showed up at mar-a-lago? >> that's right. i don't believe they were. >> do you know for a fact they

were? have you spoken to the president about it? >> i have not specifically spoken to the president about what nuclear materials may or may not have been in there. i do not believe there were any. >> reporter: the "washington post" also reporting that as authorities pursued the investigation, some officials came to suspect the trump team was not being truthful, according to those sources familiar with the matter. nbc news has reached out to trump's team, but has not heard back. it all comes after that extraordinary public statement by attorney general merrick garland thursday, announcing the justice department has asked a federal judge to unseal the warrant. >> i personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter. >> reporter: garland also hinting the authorities went forward with the search, after trying other methods. >> it is standard practice to seek less intrusive means as an alternative to a search. >> reporter: sources telling nbc news, a subpoena was delivered to mr. trump's office on june

3rd, requiring him to turn over classified material. at a meeting he set up to retrieve the documents, sources say officials asked to see the storage room, and the former president agreed. later, authorities sent an email to request better security and a second lock was added to the room. so the big question, what happens now? well, the judge has set a deadline of this afternoon, to let him know the position that the former president and his lawyers would take, given that mr. trump is saying he does not object, we could see those documents very soon. translation, we'll all be hitting the refresh button all day long. savannah? >> thank you. joining us now is nbc's ken delaney, our justice correspondent. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's get to. >> it the justice department has moved to unseal the search warrant in this matter and the property received.

what kind of information would be in those documents? >> so the warrant itself is usually a one-page document signed by a federal magistrate judge and it doesn't tell us much but it sometimes list or it often lists the law the fbi suspects was broken. so in this case, it expects to see statutes about the mishandling of government records, classified information, national defense information, and with attachments and we expect one of them to list the fbi items. and we expect it to be heavily redacted and i don't think it has an nascar transcript of putin for example. but law enforcement officials tell me we will learn something about the records and the seriousness of the investigation and the sensitivity of the documents trump took home with him. >> and you mentioned other documents. one of them is the search warrant affidavit. that's more of a narrative. that's where the agent gives the story, the factual background, the factual predicate for why the search was done in the first place. >> that's the most sensitive and revealing part of the warrant application and the fact that the d.o.j. is not seek release

it suggests to me there are parts of the investigation they are still trying to protect. the document would lay out the evidence that shows a crime occurred and why agents believe evidence of that crime existed in mar-a-lago and it may list confidential sources and it may list a larger context of the investigation. and it is part of a consortium of news organizations asking the judge to unseal this document. >> the former president issued a statement as we just showed saying release the documents now, and encouraged the documents to be released. does he have these two documents in his possession himself? could he release them? >> i mean experts say, those documents would have been given to trump's lawyers. they should have them. and they know exactly what's in them. and they could have released them before now, savannah. >> the attorney general confirmed that he's heard the authorization of the search warrant, it is standard practice

to seek less intrusive means as an alternative to a search. how do you read between the lines of that? is that sort of like the attorney general saying we tried to do this the easy way, we had to do a search this way? >> exactly. i think it reflects what nbc news has learned, what you heard from kristen, from our reporting, which is essentially, that the d.o.j. first asked nicely for these documents, and when that didn't work, they used a grand jury subpoena, and at that point sources tell us the justice department discovered evidence that the trump team was not being truthful with the subpoena and that prompted them to go to the judge. >> and redacted, fancy legal word to be blacked out, because it is so sensitive. there is a certain irony, because the more sensitive these documents are, the less likely we'll ever know, or will ever see them. >> that's a great point. we may never know the full sensitivity and how deep these secrets go that the president took to his home in florida. >> all right.

thank you very much. appreciate it. in the wake of that search, federal officials have raised serious concerns over the safety of fbi agents, and yesterday, an armed man breached the fbi building in cincinnati, ohio, leading to an hours long standoff and also, that suspect's eventual death nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with the lest from ohio. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. there are a lot of people shaking their heads wondering what would have happened if that gunman had gotten past the visitor center and into the fbi building he was brandishing an ar-15 style rifle and firing a nail gun. and officials familiar with the matter tell us he was at the u.s. capitol on january 6th. although we don't have more information about the motive, we do know in the days leading up to this attack, he was posting online after the raid at former president trump's mar-a-lago home the suspect identified by law

enforcement officials to nbc news as ricky walters shiffer, apparently pictured here outside the capitol during the january 6th riots. according to police, the attack in ohio started there, speeding on to the int state. during that time, he appeared to post online about list failed attempt to break in. writing at 9:29 a.m., i thought i had a way through bullet proof glass and i didn't if you don't hear from me, it is true, i tried attacking the fbi. that message shared on truth social, the social media platform founded by mr. trump's media company. he stayed for hours in a cornfield trying to negotiate
