this morning, a week of questions about why the fbi combed the mar-a-lago residence. punctuated with the search and seizure. the documents show the agents were looking for documents possessed in violation of three laws. including the espionage act that the justice department says is a national security provision. agents removed 11 sets of documents. some marked top secret or sensitive information. material should only be viewed in a secure facility and those on a need to know basis within the government. the fbi described the bulk of items recovered with a box number. also listed information about the president of france and clemency for roger stone and two binders of photos and handwritten note. the search authorized by the attorney general. >> i approved the decision.

department conduct the investigations independently. kristen and joe. >> maura barrett, thank you. we bring injustice it correspondent ken delanian. so much to cover. the search warrant revealed the violations the fbi were looking for. what are your take aways? >> the fbi is investigating three violations. the first is a crime to steal government records. the person convicted to be banned from holding public office for life. the second one makes it illegal to conceal or destroy records to obstruct a federal investigation. that is significant because it suggests the fbi has more information. the third is the most serious. a crime to take national defense information with the intent of

harming the united states. that doesn't mean the fbi suspects former president trump being a spy, but questions the motives for having the documents. these carry serious prison time. we don't know if the justice department is charging the former president or anyone else. >> the documents seized were declassified. first, can he do that? if they are, can laws still be broken here? >> legal scholars say -- the president has absolute declassification authority. it has to be memorialized. he cannot squirrel documents away at his home and have no record of it. this has never been tested in court. some experts believe trump has a point here. here is where it gets interesting. the three statutes apply whether or not the documents are classified. it is like they anticipated his

defense. >> i want to follow-up on the first statement. what happens next? they have the documents. is this the end of it or could there be charges? >> there are three possibilities. this is the end. the government got the documents back. the second is that the government does charge president trump or someone else with mishandling government records. the third is the most ominous. this is something larger than just keeping and storing classified information. for example, the fbi learned disturbing information about what president trump was going to do with the classified documents. that is laid out in the afternoon date of probable cause. we may not see that document unless charges with filed in the case. >> still so much t learn. ken dilanian, thank you. president biden and democrats are celebrating a hard fought victory a day after the

for possible organ donation. she crashed her car in a home in los angeles last friday. the actress suffered a severe injury caused by lack of oxygen to her brain. police say she had drugs in her system at the time of the crash. anne heche was 53 years old. we will look back on her life and emotional statement from one of her sons later in the show. we do want to take a bit of a turn now and talk about the weather. if you have been running your fans and air conditioners more this summer, there may be a good reason to that. government scientists say for the month of july, the nights were hotter than any other month on record in the continental u.s. average low temperature was 66.3 degrees las month. 3 degrees warmer than the 20th century average. the hot nights provide little relief from the days sizzling heat. >> we have been dealing with it all summer.

authorities south of san diego have been told to shelter in place. police are investigating the possibility the attacks were coordinated by organized crime groups. in los angeles on friday, another emotional day in the heated civil trial of the release of photos from the scene of kobe bryant's death. the trial's third day and the l.a. sheriff deputy said he did not do anything wrong. he said another deputy ordered him to take the photos. vanessa left the courtroom and she is suing for the photos being taken. now to major league baseball and suspension for tatis jr.

two arrests made in the brazen, broad daylight shooting of an uber driver, and now the oakland woman who was engaged to that driver says she can breathe a little bit easier. we have video of the shooting. it is hard to watch. patrick kahn was killed in his car outside of his fiancé's home. he was waiting to make a food delivery. two men walked up, he refused to get out of the car, and that's when they shot and killed him. we spoke to his fiance, who wants to protect her identity. >> it's a heavy sentence and, you know, can be a comfort. >> a 19-year-old and a juvenile has been arrested in the fatal shooting of her fiance. the community raised more than $100,000 to help the family. the case isn't closed. police are looking for a getaway

documents they found during the search of mar-a-lago. this morning, a week of questions about why the fbi combed the mar-a-lago residence. punctuated with the newly unsealed search and seizure warrant. the investigators were searching for all physical documents and records possessed in violation of three laws. including a part of the espionage act the justice department describes as national defense. federal agents removed 11 sets of documents. some marked top secret. sensitive information. indicating material that should only be viewed in a secure facility. and by those on a need to know basis within the government. the fbi described a bulk of items recovered with a box number, but listed information on the president of france and clemency for roger stone and two
