agents seized the classified documents from donald trump's florida resort. >> the threats are mainly online and personal information of targets is being revealed, including the home addresses of agents and the identities of family members. >> this is coming amid a bipartisan push to see what was in the documents, where the investigation goes from here and what was the threat to national security. for the latest let's go to hallie jackson on the story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and this morning you have this new push from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who want to see what exactly the former president had at mar-a-lago, what those documents actually show and an assessment of the potential risk to national security because of what they call the mishandling of those materials all of it as the fbi is out with the new alert on the risk against law enforcement. stepped up security this morning around the country after a new warning about a spike in threats against law enforcement agents and their families. the joint bulletin from the fbi and homeland security warning of more calls for violent against law enforcement, government and judicial officials after the

search at mar-a-lago last week. agents szing 11 sets of top secret and other highly classified documents and now the top democrat and republican on the intelligence committee are pushing the biden administration to show them what exactly those materials are and they're calling for a damage assessment. a move echoed by some democrats sounding the alarm abo the documents. >> it is so important that these documents remain in safe locations and mar-a-lago where you can check out crow kay sets and tennis rackets and golf clubs, that's not one of them. >> but the top republican on the intelligence committee down playing concern. >> we don't know what they are. we don't know if they rise to the level of a national security threat. >> now new fallout that a trump attorney told the government in june that all material marked as classified at the former president's estate had been returned.

nbc news has not reviewed it. a trump spokesperson blasting a what they describe as leaks and no hard facts. and trump's team said he had a standing order to declassify anything taken from the oval office. >> i think that claim is almost certainly a lie. >> reporter: his former national security adviser tells msnbc that's not the case. >> it would have to be documented what they were, so people know what had been declassified. i know of no paper train at all that says what's declassified and what's not. >> this has raised some questions and more scrutiny over how the former president handled sensitive and classified information throughout his time in the white house. what are you learning?hite house what are you learning?

>> reporter: john bolton, who you just heard from, described mr. trump as careless in his words with some of these materials and remembers that trump sometimes kept classified documents from briefings that he should have given back and then you have john kelly telling the wall street journal saying he tried to put in protocols to tighten it up. and there was a launch pad that was classified at the time mr. trump said he had the right to release that picture >> thank you very much. also this morning there is hopeful news in the recovery of salman rushdie after he was repeatedly stabbed while preparing to give a lecture in upstate new york the acclaimed author who faced threats for decades is off the ventilator and beginning the slow process of heeling. emelie is joining us from erie, pennsylvania where he is recovering. >> reporter: investigators call it a preplanned attack that landed salman rushdie in this hospital he suffered stab wounds all over his body, his neck, chest, and stomach. but loved ones say they're seeing signs of improvement. this morning award winning author, salman rushdie is said

to be on the road to recovery after surviving approximately 12 stab wounds. the son of the 75-year-old telling nbc news, rushdie is off a ventilator and has been able to say a few words just days following the stunning attack in western new york adding though his life changing injuries are severe his sense of humor remains intact police say a man ran on stage friday and repeatedly stabbed salman rushdie minutes before he was about to speak the event moderator was also injured in the attack. >> when this guy appeared, i thought it was a real bad-taste prank until i saw blood. after that you realize this is real. >> reporter: rushdie was going to discuss the importance of freedom of speech.

>> it's more than an attack on him. >> reporter: the accused attacker, 24-year-old hadi matar pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges he the famed author has been a target of death threats for decades. his novel in 1988 led the supreme leader of iran to call for his killing. rushdie opening up in 2012 >> it wasn't just me i was worried about my family, publishers, translators, book sellers. >> reporter: over the weekend, new york governor kathy hochul visited the scene of the attack. >> a man with a knife cannot silence a man with a pen. >> reporter: she praised those that ran to his aid. >> how critical was it that the audience had medical background, including yourself.

basically al qaeda does not any longer pose a threat to the united states from afghanistan but one year after the taliban takeover, that country is in crisis with tens of millions unable to afford food and women once again fighting for the right to work and education. a defiant and dangerous protest by women in kabul. beaten by taliban fighters for gathering in the street. chanting bread, work, and freedom. a year ago today, thousands desperately trying to escape as the taliban encircled the capital. fighting to get on the last flights out of the country handing over their children. many terrified they'd be hunted down for working with the u.s. kabul fell in hours with no resistance the country's former president fleeing in a helicopter.
