it is just enough to make the car dirty, or if you're driving, you turn on the windshield wipers and before you know it, it's gone. mostly a light rain we're starting out with this morning, but definitely something to talk about. we typically don't see rain in the middle of august. it's been pretty august with the monsoon season with some of that moving into the bay area. more chances of rain throughout today. we're watching this closely for the possibility of lightning strikes. if we do see that, of course, we'll have the latest on that with more updates throughout the morning. i'm tracking the heat. so we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. >> we'll certainly check back with you. thanks so much, kari. moving you forward on back to school. the problem is the district is still filling some open positions. there's set to be a solution in place. parents' concerns? >> reporter: laura, they found the solution in the nick of time. today is back-to-school day in san francisco. still quiet outside marina middle school. it will change hours from now when towns of thousands of students come back to this high school among others in san francisco. teachers will be back, too, at least enough to fill classrooms. earlier this month the district said it was about 100 teachers short. an sfusd spokesperson says they'll have every classroom staffed thanks to reassigning personnel. that doesn't mean every vacancy is filled. there are 60 vacancies districtwide. last year that number was at 40. according to the district, many of those classrooms are being filled by staff normally in leadership and curriculum roles. they are certified teachers who will temporarily fill in. physical therapist kelly cummins said she's focused on making

sure classes are ready for students today. >> is my fifth school to check into today. everyone is like, we'll see what happens tomorrow and the rest of the week. we'll make it work. >> reporter: something else you may be interested in, this back-to-school vaccination rates among children. sfusd is not making vaccination a requirement this year, but take a look at the numbers. san francisco's numbers are well above the state vaccination numbers for both ages 5-11 and 12-17. those percentages are from the chronicle. masks for students are strongly recommended by the district, but those as well are not required. the district is also encouraging families to test their students before head back to class today. as far as the district is concerned, their work is not done. there is active teacher recruitment to fill those vacancies and find teachers who will permanently fill those roles. laura? >> a lot of parents are concerned. here they go, back to school.

county limits on indoor public gatherings, but the appeals court reversed that ruling saying governor newsom's ban violated freedom of religion. santa clara county hopes to collect more than $2 million in penalties against the church for violating other orders including face mask requirements. new hope for home buyers when it konls to making mitt the bay. a major drop in prices in san francisco. the median price in san francisco is down by more than $300,000 since april. even after the drop, it's still more than $1.6 million. is it enough of a change for potential first-time home buyers? experts say maybe not, especially when you factor in higher mortgage rates. >> mortgage affordability is the worst it's ever been across the country. that's a big challenge for buyers to be able to come up with, first of all, a down payment, second of all, now the mortgage payment, is an issue. >> new data shows more people

getting cold feet about buying a home. redfin says nearly one in four contracts signed this year in northern california later collapsed from the buyer pulling out, double the rate of last year. our climate in crisis, and the drought having a big impact on crops. that impact may soon be hitting you at the grocery store. california tomato farmers are warning of a looming price hike. on the "today" show one central valley farmer said his yield is already down 10% this season. that should lead to an increase in prices. >> the increase in the tomato price you're going to see further down the line, as soon as these tomatoes get into this system because these are basically 25% higher in cost for the producers. >> another factor in play, inflation. the full story on the "today" show at 7:00. that's right after us here on "today in the bay." >> maybe we need something free right now and pleasant. a live look outside at the bay bridge this morning.

glistening in its glory. look at that. we've had a lot of hot temperatures lately. and now some humidity, some rain in places, kari. what's going on. >> it's like what season is this? we're seeing rain on the radar. we're talking about that in the beginning. a first day of school for a lot of kids having to grab the umbrella early in the morning. let's take a closer look at some of the rain moving through the south bay now up the peninsula. the rain is pushing from south to north. so we're seeing that move u through. for the first day of school for the kids in san francisco, we have mid 50s at drop-off time. it's going to be a mostly cloudy day. here temperatures will start to come down, but it won't really feel that much better because of the mugginess that we're seeing around the bay area today. as far as temperatures, we'll see a high of 88 degrees as kids head back in san jose. 98 in livermore and 90 in martinez. we'll also see a high of 90 in novato today. we'll see the temperatures

deck. we'll see the impact farther south coming up. good morning. it's 5:12 on your wednesday morning. stocks moved up again on tuesday. that's the fifth straight day of gains. they're at new three-month highs. american airlines, we'll talk about them in just a second. man u. this is manchester united, the soccer team. elon musk said in a tweet yesterday he'd buy the team and then said it was just a joke. musk earlier this year said he'd buy coca-cola to put the cocaine back in it. he said he'd buy twitter. that one was supposed to be real. twitter is holding him to it. he's not buying man u. or so he says. the uk just got its new estimate for inflation. it's 10.1%. 10.1% higher prices than this time last year. that is much worse than we're seeing in america. our inflation rate is actually sinking, and a lot of this is

lower gas prices. oil now below $90 a barrel. we get the fed minutes today. that should give us a better idea what the federal open markets committee wants to do about interest rates. we assume they'll keep hiking. we get retail sales numbers today. they're expected to be stronger because gas prices are lower. the money we're saving at the pump we're spending in the stores according to economists. we'll get those numbers in about 15 minutes. american airlines says it will buy 20 supersonic airliners from boom aviation. boom hasn't built these planes but they're working on it. boom says the planes will fly nearly twice the speed of sound. the company said you'll see them at airports in 2030. we talked before about the company's ceo and founder, a former real estate agent, former amazon software guy who knew nothing about airplanes and is now heading this gigantic airplane company.

>> thank you. a lot of celebrating today. >> i don't know if we're celebrating the chance of lightning and the heat that we've had -- >> spoken like a true meteorologist. take a look at the fog, though, that's rolling over the golden gate bridge. i know you can barely see anything. you can't really see anything from below either. we're seeing a lot going on here with the fog near the coast interacting with the monsoon moisture arriving into the bay area and even producing rain. it's been moving through the south bay, now working its way up the peninsula with rain other palo alto and woodside. rain over sunnyvale. it's kind of spotty, hit or miss. it's moving through quickly. it's just enough to make your car dirty. it's not going to help us with the drought. we're watching for the potential of a few lightning strikes as we go from late morning into the afternoon. where we see the darker greens,

that indicates higher humidity. that will start to shift over to the east bay and the north bay later this afternoon. and then it dries out so at least we won't be dealing with the mugginess for too long. as we go hour-by-hour, we start to see the spotty showers popping up around 9:00 this morning. keep the umbrella close by and make sure the windshield wipers aren't all dried out. a chance for spotty rain later today and by sunset seeing probably a beautiful sunset, but also some clearing skies. we do still have the excessive heat warning for parts of the central valley. heat advisory for solano county. but the rest of the bay area dropped from the heat advisory. as you're heading off for the first day of school in san jose, it will feel sticky. the roads may be wet from early morning rain. upper 60s to start and mid to upper 80s for this afternoon. check out these temperatures. even though they're coming down a few degrees compared to yesterday, it won't really feel that much cooler because of the

high humidity. going into tomorrow, that's when it starts to feel better as we see the humidity dropping. and on friday it's looking pretty nice. highs in the mid 80s for the south bay. it will be up to 100 in fairfield and 95 in livermore. checking out the seven-day forecast, slate chance for rain, monsoon moisture again. highs in the upper 90s. we see 90s in the forecast through saturday. once again, that will be combined with drier air and feeling better on sunday. san francisco drops back to the 70s today. we'll see upper 60s the rest of the week. mike, how is it looking with the crash in the south bay? >> this is berryessa, northbound 680. we're not getting a lot of details. no major injuries reported so far. this is 680 and capital expressway. in the same area, the green highlighting extends all the way into palo alto, mountain view,

cupertino, all these roadways potentially have a little dampness, maybe slicker roadways. given the time it's been since we've had rain, there could be a lot of grease on the roadways. watch the school zones as well. this extends down highway 17 where we had a crash on the northbound sound around bear creek road. it should be over on the shoulder. there's a new crash between san martin and morgan hill where we should see the buildup as well as damp lanes. watch that as well. i'll watch it for you. the crash in livermore, the third of three crashes over near north livermore on west 580, all cleared from the roadway. over here, north 880 at david, still the center divide for activity. it looks like no lanes are blocked as we get towards the bay bridge. low clouds hover around, but the view is just fine. beautiful view of the city.

5:23 right now. new accusations of theft at a problem-plagued san francisco luxury high-rise. it all started in june when a burst water pipe that led to flooding at 33 tehama, forcing tenants from the home. building management tells us the contractor was terminated soon thereafter. one resident calls this just the latest problem with the landlord. >> it's really like someone is absorbing the information, but there's not a lot of answering of our questions. i don't think there's any real content that comes from them that is very helpful. it's unfortunate that i feel like they're not empathetic to the situation. >> management did release a statement saying we have security on the premises 24 hours a day seven days a week, and the safe keeping of our residents' belongings is our

alert this afternoon from 4:00 to 9:00 over concerns that we could be stretching our electrical grid as more and more people turn on the ac during today's hot weather. during the flex alert, they ask you turn off all unnecessary lights, avoid using major appliances and set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher. before the flex alert goes into effect at 4:00, there are things you can do to keep your house cool. you want to pre cool your home by lowering the thermostat, close windows, shutters, shades and curtains. you want to charge electronic devices and your cars in advance. the bay area is in the midst of this heat wave. for example, yesterday concord hit 103 degrees. hot weeks like this unfortunately significantly increase the risk for wildfires. cal fire tells us the heat waves are a reminder that the fire

tahoe area campground. with no new information coming on, law enforcement agency will authorize a single task force. her mother is still holding out hope. >> she's tenacious. she's feisty. she has a love for life and i know that she has never been one to give up easy. >> rodni's car is also missing. her phone has been off ever since shortly after the late night party on august 5th. there's now a $75,000 reward for information to find her. in just moments the world health organization will begin its latest meeting on monkeypox which includes a name change debate. some argue that the monkeypox term may be derogatory. others suggest it could have racist connotations. world health organization leaders have acknowledged the

grapes ceremony is aimed at honoring the vendors. it starts at 11:30 this morning. it's 5:38 right now as we take a live look in downtown san jose. look at the skyline. just a beautiful way -- you see the sun trying to peek its way through. meteorologist kari hall has more. >> we have light showers that moved to the north of san jose. when we have monsoon moisture coming in, we often have these amazing sunrises and sunsets. so get the cameras ready. you'll see temperatures in the upper 60s. overall it's going to be a warm day. so shorts, short sleeves and also the water bottle to help keep them hydrated. they'll be needed for today as we head for the upper 80s. it's going to feel a lot hotter because of the mugginess lingering in the air. we also will be seeing those temperatures in the upper 80s
