this week, but how is the weekend shaping up? meteorologist kari hall will give us an early look at the forecast. this is "today in the bay." >> thursday morning, little friday as we like to call it. >> baby friday. >> i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we certainly like to nurture our thursday morning. that includes with a look at the forecast, too. finally that cooldown. >> finally that cooldown for much of the bay area including the inland valleys. we had a mixed bag of weather yesterday. things will quiet down today. as we take a look across san francisco, we'll see the fog across the bay bridge later this morning. temperatures headed for the upper 60s today. a high of 83 in san jose. normal for this time of year. we'll see more of this as we head into the next couple days. dublin reaching 87 degrees, 92

in concord. our microclimates in full effect, ranging from the mid 60s to the coast to mid 90s for some of our interior valleys. we'll be tracking what's ahead for the weekend. it is almost here. we'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike, any issues for the commute. >> an issue south 680 at the capital off-ramp. the off-ramp doesn't look like it is affected. so far the freeway itself is smooth past that scene. the rest of silicon valley, an easy drive. no problems. a smooth drive for the rest of the bay. although in san francisco we have one, possibly two crashes across the bay bridge. so far no slowing coming into the area. the crash i'm worried about is west 80 around the fremont exit. we'll check that. the sensors are still green.

a new turn in the long journey to justice for the family of alexis gabe. they believe the mother of gabe's ex-boyfriend should be charged in her murder. they finally have an ear in the county's d.a. the case is complicated by circumstances. >> reporter: gwynn gabe and his wife walking up to the microphone after meeting up with district attorney diana becton, her staff and law enforcement in a close to two-hour meeting. gabe says it was productive, even though they feel they had to protest last friday in front of this office to secure the meeting. >> we were told it would be a successful meeting. we're not 100% satisfied. >> gabe and his wife are focusing on the mother of alex's ex-boyfriend jones. jones was shot and killed in seattle on the day they went to

arrest him. authorities say he lunged at them with a knife. they believe jones' mother helped cover up the crime and they strongly feel she should be charged. >> we strongly feel she knows something. as far as where marshal hid the body, i can't say, i can't say she knows. >> reporter: nbc bay area is not reporting the mother's name because she has not been charged with the crime, but she was brought in for questioning in may. chief assistant district attorney simon o'connell says he explained to the gabe family that there just isn't enough evidence to file charges. >> also a legal issues and a need for evidence. there's investigative aspects that we agreed upon today which i wouldn't be at liberty to discuss because this still very much is an ongoing investigation. >> reporter: we tried and were unable to get ahold of jones'

mother. >> if our child did something bad like that, we would be the first one to turn him in or at least give the information. >> reporter: law enforcement is still actively working on this case. alexis' family is still searching for her. they say they won't give up until they find her. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." santa clara county health officer dr. sarah cody is expected to be deposed today as part of a lawsuit against a well-known south bay church. during the height of the pandemic, calvary chapel continued to hold large, in-person services. appeals court dismissed about $200,000 in fines and court fees. the county is still seeking nearly $3 million in other fines. legal analysts say the debate over public health and religious freedom could send this case to the supreme court. inflation is at a 40-year

high. the rising cost of everyday items is having a major impact on those trying to make it in the bay. there's new data from the pew research center showing 58% of blacks, 58% of latino and 69% of native americans say recent price increases have caused them to seriously have some financial problems. 36% of asians say this is causing them tom serious financial hardship. joining me now to talk about this is the robert wood johnson foundation's chief science officer, alonso plough. let's talk about something we've been talking about since getting to this point. that's the emergency savings there. how is it affecting their emergency savings fund? >> in these populations, black, latino, native american populations, our communities don't have savings. so when you are min maum wage workers, day to day on the best of times, when inflation hits, it erodes your ability just to

meet those basic human needs, food, shelter and health care. and there aren't large amounts or any inon. or if there are, those will be taken up very, very quickly. >> when you have a situation like that, there's no emergency fund and now higher cost of everything is hitting your wallets harder, what advice do you give folks dealing with these high prices on a daily basis? >> we need better public policies and approaches from our elected officials for a better and fairer safety net. people shouldn't be allowed to fall this far during inflation and should have more stability over their life course. it's important for people to think about this as a problem we share all together. it's a fairness issue, a reflection of any quality that is really not something that we as spire to or want to have as americans. >> so much more including how we all can actually hold our public

good thursday morning. the time is 4:40. as you're heading off for your commute, in the delta starting with temperatures in the upper 60s. a breezy morning but mostly clear. it will be heating up quickly again today, just not as hot as we've seen the past couple days. we'll be at 86 at 11:00. we'll check out the microclimates and talk about the weekend forecasting coming up. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza heading into san francisco, i believe that incident at fremont street has cleared from the roadway. we'll double-check the information there. over in the east bay in the distance, there's cal. i believe they've moved in over the last few days getting ready for the school year. let's get a look at business with bertha. >> i see what you did there, mike. very nice. good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc.

we've got wall street looking like it will open slightly higher this morning after stocks fell yesterday. saw the dow snap a five-day winning streak. the nasdaq and s&p 500 are on track to break a four-week winning streak. the minutes from last week's sff meeting shows the fed is committed to fighting inflation and continue hiking rates until they bring that inflation rate down. this morning we're awaiting reports on jobless claims and existing home sales, and we're also watching for earnings from estee lauder and kohl's. tiktok has a new tool to let users share their stories directly to facebook, instagram and other social networks. the feature has only recently started rolling out, reposting tiktok stories could be a new way for some creators to share their work with followers on

instagram and facebook without having to compete with reels which is really an effort to compete with tiktok. it's an arms race on your phones. apple is expected to unveil the latest iphone on september 7th. bloomberg reporting the iphone 14 which feature a better camera but will otherwise only have minor upgrades. there's going to be a version with a 6.7-inch screen. apple is getting rid of the mini version with the five-inch screen for nearsighted people like me that can't see a tiny screen. they're expected to unveil three new watch models and an ipad by the end of the year. once you go to a bigger screen, you can't go back. >> i used to like the minis when everything came out, and now it's like -- >> i never liked them. i'm a big guy. i need a big phone. >> i just want to be able to

wish it could stay like that all day. >> no, no, no. because then you wouldn't need someone to report that. >> you don't wish it was like that. >> trying to save my job, marcus. >> some of the folks heading to the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll end up going across the bridge and maybe trying to get off at fremont street. the crash was cleared from the chp report without any incident. 101 at acadia, we had a little slowing. the incident should be cleared completely from the roadway. no slowing or impact to the freeway. over here, the approach to the golden gate bridge is a little slow. crews clearing from the overnight construction. that causes the sensors to slow. it's not like a logjam getting over the golden gate bridge. a smooth drive throughout the north bay. contra costa county, a smooth flow of traffic.

i'll zoom out. i'll show you the kuks should be picking up right this second. that's better drive in the next few minutes. notice yesterday along the south bay and peninsula we had the green highlighting. not today. no light rain from the road weather index, kari. >> it's a dry morning. the humidity is dropping as well. we're not going to have the mugginess we had yesterday that gave us all kinds of crazy weather with scattered showers. the good thing is we didn't see a lot of lightning strikes. as we go into today, we should head back into a more steady weather pattern with our morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. right now in san jose, it's 63 degrees. we'll see those temperatures headed for the mid 60s at 9:00, upper 60s, and about 74 degrees at 11:00. overall a nice and comfortable morning. in some spots we're dealing with some heat. there's a heat advisory that continues for lake county as well as solano county for today starting once again at 11:00 this morning. you can see why our temperatures in those areas still reaching into the mid 90s.

napa today reaching 81 degrees, while oakland is coming down to 75. many of these temperatures are much cooler than the highs we hit yesterday and especially the day before. livermore reaches 93 degrees after seeing the triple digits a couple days ago while san francisco will be in the upper 60s. more far near the coast, but that starts to retreat as we start to see the temperatures warming up a little more for tomorrow with fairfield heading up to 100 degrees. we'll still be in the mid 80s in san jose. as you make saturday plans, it will be slightly hotter for the south bay. some of our inland valleys are remaining about the same with 90s once again. let me show you napa and our ten-day temperature trend. warm weather through saturday, but there will be slight cooling on sunday. if you're making plans, the weekend may be more comfortable. i think sunday will be the best day as we see the temperatures dip just a little bit more as we head toward the next several days. taking a look at next week as el

with. we head back to the low 90s by next tuesday and wednesday. that dip in temperatures doesn't last that long, but it really doesn't change for san francisco. we stay in the 60s throughout the weekend as well as early next week. now as we turn to our "climate in crisis," as covid restrictions continue to relax, many people are heading back to the office. there are some materials and supplies that we're using. are they eco-friendly. meteorologist vee arana breaks it down. >> maybe you're like a lot of us at nbc bay area. we are back in the office. that might mean getting office supplies, or you might be sending your kids off to school. the question is how can we make that more eco-friendly? let's move these forward. first, here is the problem. stationary pens and note pads might be necessary. often times the materials don't break down which means they end
