good morning. it is sunday, august 2 # 1st, 7:00 on the dot, as we are taking a look outside with the sun shining over san jose. a beautiful way to start what should be a lovely day. warm out there though. thank you for starting your sunday with us. i'm kira klapper. we are going to go to developing news right now in the north bay where a wildfire has forced evacuations in clear lake about 40 miles north of santa rosa. these flames ignited last night and burned about 15 acres so

far. the crews battled the flames from the ground and from the air, and they have managed the fires from growing right now, and evacuations are in place. this is time lapsed video from an alert camera, and you can see how much smoke went up in a matter of minutes. we spoke to people vacationing across from the fire, and they shared this video with us when they first saw the smoke in the sky. >> we looked out on the dock, and there was a huge cloud of smoke over there, and it was shocking, and pretty mellow trip up until this, and i have clearly not seen anything like this before. >> wow. can you imagine being on vacation and seeing this? let's check in with vianey arana. >> it is tough, because we have a lot of dry brush out there,

and so when we do get the cooling, the conditions out there are favorable when it comes to the fire quickly spreading, but i want to turn your attention to this forecast, because today, it is going to be a hot day, and we will get relief up through the region, and up to clear lake with the high 90s and low humidity, and today, calmer winds, but however, we are expecting the winds to increase heading into tomorrow, and that is going to definitely be another area of concern as the winds are increasing into the 15 to 20-plus-mile-an-hour range heading into monday night, and hopefully a little better look at action into tomorrow. locally, theer are some things that goes up into the day. >> and you can of course track the heat and the cooldown on the nbc bay area app, and also send you breaking news and alerts

richmond police say they have solid leads, but they have no leads on who shot a person at a play ground just before 3:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. the park is on sixth street near virginia avenue, and if vow information, contact the department. on south city union, the search is on for a person who shot a man at a packed restaurant. two people were shot, and now we are learning more about how it unfolded. today in the bay's tom jensen is trying to make sense of what happened outside of his restaurant. >> it was startling to say the least according to alonso baez who has owned the restaurant with his father for four years. the band was playing for a packed house, and small fight

kiely rodni disappeared from a truckee camp ground. and today, a dive team from oregon joined in on the search. they are called adventures with purpose, and they specialize in cold cases for people who disappear in their cars underwater. and then other teams said they were scaling back their search. she was last seen in this area hours before her disappearance. and now, there is a new option for teenagers looking to get vaccinated against covid. the fd, has given authorization for novavax. it received approval for adults in july, and now, hopefully with the new surgings is with back to school, and in the fall will help with any surges. and school officials urge

skyrocketed. we have people on the scale of 1 to 10 how interested that ri are in the election, and the number of people picking 10 is now over 55% in august, and never we were at t that high in early in the election cycle. we are seeing the october numbers higher than we have seen. no doubt, abortion on the left and mare l-a-lago on the right constituencies fired up. >> and you are also talking about the mega drought which is something that we have been dealing with in california for years and new water restrictions to impact millions here in the west, but how has this changed things politically or become

political? >> well, think about the new restrictions that got announced. in arizona, they took it on the chin, arizona and nevada in particular, and california was not touched, and what did the arizona authorities say? hey, what about california? this is what i feel like i am staring at here is a future political divide that is going to turn states against each other that share reservoirs, and in the southwest, you are looking, and look, some of the fastest growing cities in the last 30 years all get their drinking water from the colorado river basin, denver, phoenix, tucson, and san diego, and all of southern california, and so this is, i think that we are, and even the country of mexico gets some, but the fight over drinking water as it is becoming a more scarcer resource because

processed by the border patrol. the boat was taken to the shore, and seized by the coast guard. looking ahead to the week, the former air force sergeant linked to and the extremist movement is expected to be sentenced friday for killing a sergeant. stephen corrao pleaded guilty in june for killing a sergeant stephen gutwiler in june. they say that corrao ambushed the group with a van and bombmaking materiels. corrao was then killed. he was also convicted of killing another police officer here in the bay area. the husband of nancy pelosi

is going to have a hearing in connection with dui charges. he is charged with crashing his porsche. he appeared before a court and pleaded not guilty to the charge. pelosi does not have to appear at this week's hearing, and the attorney says that his case has been disruptive to pelosi's office because of callers swamping the phone lines and some has threatened the staff, and she says that the case is like any other person with a dui. and now, some of the staff of kaiser permanente will be back on the pickett line. we were there friday when they marched to the headquarters in oakland. the strike involved some 2,000 mental health workers across southern california. in a statement friday, kaiser

said that the strike is a disruption for mental care that does not need to happen. they are hopeful that the union will return to the bargaining table to reach a deal. and california's high speed rail system is getting a thumb's up for the final environmental documents that needed approved for the track between san jose and san francisco. the 50-mile stretch currently used by caltrain. this latest approval means 420 miles of the 500-mile project now has to go ahead. it is slated to stretch from san francisco to anaheim in southern california. our investigaive unit has gone extensive reports on on the delays. go to nbcbayarea.com/investigations

with the mid-50s to start out, and i wanted to get to temperature trend, because we will start to get the sunshine peeking through at 9:00 or 10:00, and noticing icons, we will get the cloudy skyline lingering all day long, and even though the temperatures will climb into the upper 60s and we will remain cloudy pretty much today. and this afternoon we will climb into the 80s and lots of sunshine and cooler in the interior, and that is nice, because yesterday it was hot in the inland valley, and 61 degrees in dublin and 82 by 2:00, and we are going to be seeing the pretty good air quality in the next 24 hours, and all of the way from the north bay to santa clara valley, and typically we like to monitor the air quality and remember we have the fire in clear lake, and depending on the direction of

the wind, you will encounter some smoke, so keep the windows closed. it will be breezier in the afternoon, and picking up into mondayk and this is going to be the concern of the clear lake fire, because once we see the winds picking up, and the conditions remaining dry, that is going to bring an elevated fire concern even through parts of the interior, and after today's slight cooldown, we will warm up into the triple digits like fairfield valley, and the range of the 80s and 90s and the triple digits along the coastline. and we will see the return of a couple of clouds, and then we will start to see the temps diminishing when it is dyingdown, and the temperature s will get up to the 80s. and it is sunday funday, but looking into the work week, we will get the brief cooling, but also we will be talking about

tends to recover overnight, and above the 40% is where we want to see the humidity, a right now, 52, and throughout the day, as we continue to see the dry conditions, the humidity tends to fall, and we have dry brush out there, which is of concern, and that is also that we are monitoring temperatures, and by 12:00 to 1:00, we will climb into the 90s, and by monday, we will see an increase in the winds, and today, when we get to the wind speeds, it will be the best time to tackle that fire. and as far as the conditions here in the san francisco, and the east bay, we will see brief cooling for the interior valley, and then we will look at the timing of the temperatures, and of course, the air quality concerns coming up in a few minutes. kira. >> and of course, when we are not on the air, you can track the heat and the cooldown on the way with the free nbc bay area

park. a gunman shot and killed a person at southside community park. it happened right next to a playground in broad daylight just before 3:00 yesterday after noon. the park is on south sixth street and virginia avenue, and the police are asking anyone with information to contact the richmond police department. sticking to the east bay, the search is on for the person or people who opened up fire outside of a packed restaurant in union city. it happened at the restaurant where two people were shot, and now we are learning more of how it up folded. tom spoke with the owner who is trying to make sense of what happened outside of the restaurant. >> reporter: it was frustrating needless to say for jose baez who has worked with his father for if last few years. a band was playing inside, and

and why are they caught up with banning a book? >> well, it is a urous trash. somehow these books are caught into our boom pooks, and that is how they learn about race and sex in ways that are harmful to them. so hundreds of books are band. they go from popular novels like "to kill a mocking bird" to the bible. it depends what ebb states they are and they are denied an awful lot of opportunity to put that percentage in a gallup poll and in a way that some people think it is not an issue. >> are some suggesting that leaders are just making sure that the kids are getting the
