missing in the sierra. divers pulled a car from the water of a lake steps from where kiely rodni was last seen alive. authorities plan to hold a news conference this morning but friends and family are preparing for the worst. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in the studio with where the investigation stand. >> good morning to you both. over the weekend divers did find a small silver suv like the one that kiely rodni drove and now the sheriff's department is trying to confirm whether it belonged to her. and whether she is the person that was found inside. this is what volunteer divers posted on facebook over the weekend, they found a silver honda crv with the license plate that matched rodni. volunteers with adventures with purpose say that divers using sonar imaging technology finding vehicle in 14 feet of water 300 yards from the

campground where she was last seen at a party with 100 teenagers on august 6. volunteer search was separate from the one launched by authorities that searched an 80-mile radius. by ground, by boat and by air. after ten days that search was scaled back. but the volunteer search continued. >> why don't they have the equipment that they had to find her? you know? where we live we have bodies everywhere. >> i don't fault law enforcement in any way. they -- i know they putt in thousands of hours of searching. >> the nevada and placer county investigators will hold a press conference with the fbi at 11:00. marcus? >> we will be watching. thank you. >> wish it was better new there is. we have been following the story since the beginning. for two weeks posting things at

nbcbayarea.com. it is the top story on the home page and will also live stream the update scheduled to happen at 11:00 this morning. oakland police are investigating the deadly shooting of an elderly woman in little saigon. this happened yesterday afternoon during what police say was an attempted robbery. police so far are saying very little other than no arrests have been made. oakland council member issued a statement saying in part i am outraged and sickened over the senseless, brutal slaying of an elderly aapi woman in broad daylight this afternoon. she goes on to say we can and must do better. no one should presume they can come into oakland at any time and commit a violent crime without repercussions. on the fight against monkeypox, the white house is rolling out a massive new vaccine distribution plan. "today in the bay's" brie jackson joins us in washington breaking down the timeline.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. the white house monkeypox response team is rolling out a series of new actions to better address the outbreak beginning today. 1.8 million more vaccines will be available. the white house plans a pilot program to allocate 50,000 doses for cities hosting large events with gay and bisexual men. that group is especially hit hard by the outbreak. although it is important to highlight health leaders say anyone can be infected and the white house is making available 50,000 doses of tpoxx, used to treat monkeypox infections. on thursday cdc director dr. rochelle walensky said that officials are learning the effectiveness of the vaccine as the agency works to mitigate the spread and said there's certain steps to take to boost the protection. >> although we anticipate vaccines will provide protection

reducing or avoiding behaviors that increase the risk is important. especially between your first and second doses of vaccine. >> reporter: the cdc said avoiding skin to skin contact with people with a rash that looks like monkeypox, avoiding objects used by people infected and washing hands often are ways you can stay safe. this is a look at the current number of infections since the outbreak started confirmed in the bay area. san francisco currently tracking 638 cases. second largest anywhere in california and 2,600 confirmed infections across the entire state. on friday california health officials confirmed they avoid using the term monkeypox and will refer to as impox. in order to avoid potential

6:31. the deadline ticking down this morning for governor newsom to approve a controversial plan to allow drug injection sites in san francisco and oakland. >> users could inject drugs at so-called safe sites under medical supervision. ginger conejero saab explains how that program would work. ginger? >> reporter: good morning. people in san francisco paying close attention to the governor's signature, two bay area cities part of the proposed pilot program. about a week and a half ago local leaders made the push for the governor to sign this bill. fast forward to now the last day waiting on the last minute signature. the measure would allow oakland, san francisco and los angeles to allow for places where intraveen

you drug u medical supervision. it would not be the first. similar programs are up and running in the world. new york city has an unsanctioned version. in 2018 we traveled to vancouver. this is video from then and shows what it looks like from inside. back here at home supporters say these sites are a way to help keep people safe while they use drugs. last thursday we spoke with the mayor and here's what she had to say. >> i am still hopeful that he will sign it. it is very consistent with his bold moral leadership to do things that are right in the face of criticism and controversy, as well as to try new things. we all agree that the status quo is wholly unacceptable. both with regard to the loss of life because of drug overdoses

but the impact on the neighborhoods. >> reporter: as you can imagine there are also opponents to this including groups like mothers against drug deaths say the need for a solution lies in rehabilitation and recovery and not what they call addiction maintenance. here's the statement against sb 57. it reads in part, san francisco is putting a band aid on a gaping wound in not building out a fully functional recovery oriented system of care in handling the drug and fentanyl epidemic. there is no safe way to use fentanyl and to suggest that is possible is just another step towards normalizing a deadly and progressive condition. mothers against drug deaths say staffing is a challenge in treatment and rehabilitation. they want more money and funding to go into there, that aspect instead of this safe consumption sites.

children, the bay area is seeing the highest vaccination rates in the state. as of last week 8 out of the 9 bay area counties among the top 10 with children vaccination. however some parents are skeptical about the possible side effects. we spoke with dr. ross mckinnie saying the reality is covid can be deadly and getting the child vaccinated is vital. >> when you get kids together in school they start spreading things. we'll see a spike of covid in kids. we know because once they get together in school, you get outbreaks. so why not protect them? >> he also stresses getting the vaccine along with the regular back to school vaccines will not produce more side effects. the open ended strike of kaiser mental workers entering the second week. last friday several hundred

workers marched to kaiser corporate headquarters in oakland. some 2,000 employees have walked off the job demanding higher pay, increased staffing and shorter wait times for patients. in a statement friday kaiser said that the strike is unnecessary disruption to patient care. right now no contract talks are scheduled a follow-up in lake county where a fire that started saturday night is mostly out. remaining evacuation orders lifted last night. the fire burned about 15 acres. a live look out at san francisco. you can see the fog is sticking around. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect across the bay area today. it will be a nice one for us. >> nice for much of the bay area and hot inland valleys. the fog keeps san francisco and parts of the inner bay cooler today. in berkeley heading to work this morning the upper 50s. mostly cloudy morning and the

roundtable discussion on hunger and food insecurity ahead of the upcoming white house conference on hunger, nutrition and health. the meeting takes place at the san francisco marin food bank starting at 1:00 p.m. pelosi is planning to stream the event from her website. the white house could announce major changes to the federal student loan as soon as this week. >> they run out of time, scott. >> absolutely. because the suspension of federal student loan payments set to end september 1. that's ten days away. to remind you student loan payments were suspended by the trump administration because of covid and then again and again and then the biden administration suspended them even further. we have been expecting for a very long president biden would announce at least a portion of those loans forgiven altogether. he made it a campaign promise but forgiveness or not they have run out of time.

there's no guidance to private agencies that manage student loan payments. about a resumption about the payments on september 1. at bare minimum the white house is going to announce another suspension and kick that can down the road. politically if they announce loan forgiveness it would make sense to do it closer to the midterms. here's the secretary of education on "meet the press" not really clearing anything up. >> we are ten days away from the most recent moratorium on student debt to expire. should we expect another temporary extension or is a permanent fix coming? >> from day one we have been focused on making sure we are protecting the students and the borrowers. $32 billion in debt forgiveness. we know august 31 is a date that many people wait to hear something. we have been talking daily about

this, and i can tell you that the american people will hear within the next week or so. >> it won't be nothing. is it fair to say it won't be nothing? >> i don't have any news to announce today but i'll tell you the american people will hear directly from us because we recognize it is an important issue across the country. dr. jill biden tested negative for coronavirus and out of isolation. she returned to the biden home in delaware where the president is. he's been on vacation for most of this month. in washington, d.c. the city there asking for help as bus after bus of immigrants arrived from texas. u.s. law says some immigrants are allowed to stay in the u.s. while waiting for the case to be adjudicated. texas is putting them on buses to go to washington d.c. where they are dropped off on the corner. this is on the orders of the texas governor w objects to president biden's immigration policy. the problem is washington, d.c. is not run by the federal
