this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> and here we go for your wednesday morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in a bit. first we're bringing in the right. >> it's so dark and early in the morning, we can see the fog in san francisco over the bay bridge and here's a live look outside in dublin this morning, where visibility is much clearer. let's head to the south bay with a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon. it's going to warm up to the upper 80s in san jose, and even some low 90s, but this is what we've seen the past few days with vallejo reaching 84 degrees, and some mid-90s for livermore, oakland in the upper 70s and half moon bay low 60s there. you can see how big of a difference those temperatures will range from the coastal areas to the inland valleys, anywhere from 60s to 100 degrees. so we'll be watching this, and what's ahead for the weekend

coming up, mike, you have a serious crash in the east bay. >> very light traffic right now. the impact on the traffic flow pretty minor as far as what we're looking at the big view. this crash highway 13 is a deadly crash involving a single car that went off the road. there's a wall right there. i believe the crash was into the wall but the emergency vehicles that are there are taking up the slow lane. only two lanes in each direction for the warren freeway, that's highway 13, southbound slows approaching redwood road. i'm not sure how long the closure will remain. it's opposite the main commute toward 24 and the maze. southbound highway 13 a deadly crash is blocking your slow lane as you head down toward the merge, highway 13 and 580. the rest of the bay looks relatively smooth for the speed sensors. one crash out of the altamont and earlier crash in san jose, it's affecting an off-ramp for 87 but the freeway itself guadalupe parkway is open. back to you. >> thanks, mike. it is 4:32 right now.

the new school year revealing how much the teacher shortage is affecting classrooms. >> many bay area schools are left scrambling to fix this issue but "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney explains san francisco schools may soon see some relief to help the students move forward. >> our educators don't get paid what they're worth. >> reporter: at san francisco school district head quarters, a rally by the united educators of san francisco. >> we know the "shortage" is not here because there's not qualified educators out there. that's not true. it's because we have a respect shortage. we have a pay shortage. >> reporter: union leadership says part of the solution is on the way with the state budgeting $70 million for this school district this year, and $50 million annually in perpetuity. the union president says it has to be used to attract and retain instructors because things simply can't go on as they are. >> it's awful when you know that you have to move classrooms, some classrooms are being

combined, educators are scrambling to cover classrooms, some on a daily basis. >> reporter: nationwide, there are 280,000 fewer public school teachers this year than before the pandemic and to call texas to compete with larger schools that can't afford to pay more, offering a four-day work week to retain too muchteachers. >> it's buying me some of the family time back that used to be concerned with school tasks. >> if you're wondering why there is a teacher shortage in san francisco, you just have to do the math. >> reporter: maybe the start to a brighter teachers an acknowledgment by the school district superintendent. >> and what we recognize is we need to make sure that we're prioritizing our investment in compensation for staff to again be able to recruit and retain. >> reporter: part of the problem is san francisco's incredibly high cost of living. the annual salary for a teacher in san francisco is between

$43,000 and $65,000 depending on training and experience. the poverty line in the city $82,000. terry mcsweeney, "today in the bay." promising news if you are one of the millions still paying off student loans. today president biden will announce a federal plan to relieve college debt. the new proposal would cancel $10,000 in federal student loans for every borrower making $125,000 or less. the president is also expected to extend the pandemic loan calls for several more months. we spoke with some students at san jose state about the plan. >> that would be amazing, that was like all the hard work would feel like you're paying off like everything that you worked hard in school and you can finally naught towards a job to make money for yourself instead of spending years and years trying to pay off your debt. >> not everyone is happy about this. the committee for a responsible federal budget calls the debt forgiveness proposal a mistake that would not only cost millions in taxpayer dollars but undermine the gains in the

recent inflation reduction act. and a disturbing story in petaluma this morning, where police are investigating the suspicious death involving a woman they believe died over a year ago. this is at a home on windsor drive, where you can see in that video if you look closely there, parcels stacked up in front of that home. when officers finally entered, they also found a woman living there who claimed to be the deceased woman's daughter. she tells police her mother died from natural causes. that woman is now being mentally evaluated. the home is red tagged due to its condition. australia is in the midst of a severe flu season, which can often be an outlook to what the u.s. season will look like. i spoke to dr. peter chin-hong about the growing concerns amid the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. first i asked if we should be concerned about a twindemic >> we've cried wolf the last two years but this may be the year where we see a lot of flu cases,

together with covid, and the reason why we are going to see a lot of flu cases is that we're seeing it already, australia, new zealand, argentina, brazil, parts of south america that are having winter and we haven't had a lot of immunity in the population for flu for the last couple years. >> lots of people get the flu. lots of kids get the flu. is it really necessary to get the flu shot then? >> yes, it's really, really necessary to get the flu shot. unlike covid, where kids are not really affected, flu causes a lot of illness, hospitalizations and even deaths in kids, as well as older adults. so it's really, really important to build that immunity. this year, it's more important than ever, just given the fact that we've been naive immunologically for the last couple years. >> google's los angeles campus areas are experiencing one of the largest covid-19 workplace outbreaks in the state with nearly 300 employees currently infected. is this something we should be concerned about with more people

the time is 4:41. as we check out san jose, and how the morning will shape up for you, it's nice and clear. it's 60 degrees. a quiet start to the day, and it will lead into a sunny, late morning, into the afternoon. those temperatures will warm right back up, basically where we were yesterday, so we'll check out all of our microclimates as we are heading

closer to the weekend. more on that in a few minutes. >> i'm not going to complain, although it will warm up. looking to oakland, a smooth drive. you're at 65, we'll give you credit as a limit through the area. don't want to get anybody in trouble on the nimitz. we'll check the bigger commute, a crash in san jose. first let's check in with our friend frank. >> hey, good morning. i'm frank holland from cnbc. wall street is set to open up lower this morning, extending yesterday's losses. investors are in a wait-and-see mode ahead of a big speech by jerome powell on friday. he's expected to hike interest rates even if that means possibly triggering a recession. the s&p 500 closing in the red for a third straight day. focus on today earnings from salesforce and chipmaker nvidia. nearly 70% of adults say they're worried about a possible recession before the end of next year. a new survey from bank rate shows three-quarters of people are actively taking steps with

their personal finances. those include spending less on discretionary items, saving more for emergency and retirement and looking for additional or more stable income. about half of people think inflation will be even worse a year from now. and toll brothers the nation's largest luxury home builder is reporting a forecast drop. a rush of sales during the pandemic, home builders are facing now a drop in demand. the customers are move-up buyers who can afford homes selling for an average of about $1 million but higher rates cut into their purchasing power and slowing sales of existing homes makes it harder for potential boyers to sell their house and trade up. guys, back over to you. i would say the story impacts you. over there $1 million is like studio. the bay area is crazy. >> it really is. >> sadly. all right, thanks, frank. >> on that note, frank -- good to see you three days in a row! 4:43.

>> depends on where your clients are. >> right here. >> we've been seeing the same kind of weather pattern, where it's cool and foggy near the coast, and really hot and sunny inland. so let's get a look at what's going on with a live look outside in san francisco. boy, this sure looks like the picture yesterday. i think we just like copy and pasted. this is what we'll see as we go into this afternoon, back in the upper 80s for san jose, reaching 89 in east san jose and back to 91 in morgan hill. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. there will be some changes ahead, but in oakland today, it's 76 degrees, while antioch will hit a high of 96 degrees, and only 62 in half moon bay. that fog may not clear today. it's been cooler there, but you head over to the santa cruz mountains, redwood city and it's 84 for a high temperature. you compare that to 73 in the mission district and 60 in the

marina district, and mill valley will reach 84 degrees, while clear lake hits 100 degrees. so you can see the range in temperatures there that will continue all because of the fog rolling down the coastline, and gradually we'll start to see those temperatures heating up as we go toward the end of the forecast, but in the near-term, it's going to be fairly nice. antioch, we're once again in the 90s. we see it dipping a little bit but we get some real relief for the weekend with some mid 80s in the forecast and back to the mid-90s by early next week. looking at our seven-day inland temperatures, we are going to see the highs starting to come down once again, we're just looking ahead to a nice cool weekend for some of our microclimates, especially along the coastline and in san francisco. mike, you're looking at a crash in san jose? >> yeah, checking up on it, kari. overall, silicon valley looks fine. talked about guadalupe parkway the exit to taylor from the

northbound direction may still be blocked. there was an earlier crash there, car took out a light pole and quite an issue getting someone out of that car. probably mangled that car so they have to take care of that car itself and the light pole, so the off-ramp i believe will be closed for a bit longer, but northbound 87 itself if you're passing by taylor, you're doing just fine getting up in toward the airport and passing through downtown. over here, 580 coming out of the altamont pass, a little more smoothly getting past the scene of an earlier crash past the merge with 205 and 580. things are typical as you get out through the altamont pass and in toward greenville. after that, everything's at speed. vasco road no delays coming out of byron and brentwood, discovery bay. in the east bay looking only at this crash but it's a deadly crash, southbound highway 13 by redwood road. we'll touch on that again coing up. a smooth drive to the rest of the bridges >> thanks for keeping an eye on everything out there, mike. roku owners, nbc baig area
