7:04 am
we're going to start things off with nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to both of you. last night's primaries had a number of headlines from a member-on-member battle in new york to the youngest person potentially poised to go to congress. but the biggest takeaway of all came in that special election in new york where the democrat pulled out a victory over his republican challenger by running on a platform of abortion rights. the implications for the fall, democrats could put on a fiercer fight than expected to hold on to power with abortion at the center of it all. in the last major round of primaries before the midterm elections, critical races in florida and new york offering clues ahead of november. and the night brought a big surprise in new york with even bigger implications. >> i honestly can't believe it. i cannot believe it. defeating congresswoman carolyn maloney after a redrawn district map forced two committee chairs to fight for a single house seat. >> those new yorkers get to choose who best represents the people and values of this city. and you know what, i think the voters made themselves clear tonight. >> reporter: now, another big top line from the night, voters could be poised to send a gen z candidate, 25-year-old maxwell frost won his primary in florida, and if he wins in the fall, which seems likely, he'll be the youngest person in congress, making him more than 60 years younger than the oldest person in congress. hoda. >> generational gap there. let's talk about the other big story. president biden is expected to announce a decision about cancelling some student loan debt. i know a lot of people are watching this one closely. >> reporter: hoda, this is significant. that's right.
7:07 am
multiple sources tell nbc news president biden is expected to announce today that he will extend a pause on student loan payments until january, and his administration will forgive $10,000 in debt for those earning less than $125,000 a year. that's the expectation. we'll have to see what he says. but mr. biden is getting pushback. the president of the naacp saying on tuesday, forgiving $10,000 just doesn't go far enough to help borrowers of color, calling it a problem. and even the senate's top democrat, chuck schumer has called for mr. biden to go further, pushing for him to forgive $50,000 in debt. but on the other side of this, hoda, some economists have warned that the move could actually add to inflation, and republicans have called it a handout to the rich, arguing it would mostly help high income graduates. the bottom line here, though, all sides are going to be watching today's announcement very closely, hoda. >> indeed. all right. kristen welker at the white house, thank you.

also this morning, we are learning more about the classified documents at the center of the fbi search on former president trump's florida home. nbc's senior washington correspondent hallie jackson joins us with the very latest on this. so what more have we learned? >> reporter: today we're finding out that more than 700 pages of classified documents were taken to former president trump's home in florida after he left office. this is according to a letter that's now been released by the national archives. it was sent to mr. trump's attorneys in may. this is after the archives says it retrieved 15 sets of classified material back in january, including some stuff marked as special access programs. what does that mean? we're talking about some of the most closely guarded secrets of
