it's still going to be very warm as we go into later today for the interior east bay, with concord hitting 90 degrees. we have some upper 80s expected for morgan hill, while san jose will reach 84 degrees and some low 80s for much of the north bay. san francisco stays in the 60s. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend forecast. mike, how is it looking in the north bay? >> car e auto, the speed sensors look fine. there is a crash reported behind the shield, sorry, folks, that's what happened there. we're looking at westbound 80 your commute direction coming toward the cor delia junction out of fairfield around green valley road for those who can use that as a reference point, that's what's going on. that may slow folks down but way farther north from the bridges so the bridges carquinez and benicia fine. the earlier crash cleared, everything looks fine on the live camera. no delays all the way on either side of the bay. back to you. >> let's hope it stays that way. happening today, a rally against a controversial plan in

foster city to kill 100 geese. >> "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live in foster city this morning with the latest on the strongly-debated issue. ginger, has anything been decided here yet? >> good morning, laura and marcus. nothing concrete yet, but it's been an issue in the city for a while. a continuing geese feces problem that foster city says is posing a health risk to humans. the canada geese population has doubled to more than 300 in recent years. the lethal removal would affect 100 of the geese, but protesters say that number is still too high. this is video from the last protest on this issue back in july where people from both sides of the debate had much to say. one man says the problem has gotten so bad, the birds are filthy and human safety should also be considered. but many say lethally removing the birds is inhumane, including san mateo county supervisor david canepa who is leading the protest today. in a recent tweet he said "i

disagree with foster's city plan to get rid of its goose population. it's inhumane and does not solve any problem. the geese are a country-wide concern and i stand against any plan to kill them." in a video message posted from foster city councilmember sanjay gahani yesterday says culling the geese is only one solution the council is entertaining. >> be assured, we are not considering eradication nor extermination. but the lethal alternative is part of a multifaceted plan to control the canada goose population which has doubled in foster city over recent years and is projected to double again over the next few years. >> reporter: he continues on to say that the city is exploring other options, including robot technology and landscape modifications to make foster city less attractive to the geese. in the meantime, he urges the public to stay away from the

birds, throw or recycle the trash away in the parks and if you have any suggestions, to email geese@fostercity.org. they're open to more suggestions. guys, back to you. >> hopefully they find another suggestion to keep all of the geese alive but we'll see. all right, ginger, thank you. 5:04 right now. in just a few hours, we're going to get a look at a redacted version of the affidavit used to adjust the fbi search of former president trump's home. the trump legal team is also being ordered to provide more details in their request for an independent special master to review the evidence it seized and determine if anything could be returned to the former president. "today in the bay's" alice barr is live in washington with more on what is expected. a lot going on, alice. >> laura, this is going to be a busy day, certainly in this very closely-watched investigation, and that probable cause affidavit that you mentioned, it's getting so much attention precisely because it lays out

this justification, the reasons why the justice department ordered the fbi search of the former president's home and it contains evidence, some of what the judge saw to sign off on the search warrant, evidence going into the investigation of how the former president handled classified documents. new details set to emerge this morning about the unprecedented search of former president trump's mar-a-lago estate. a federal judge ordering the release by noon today of a redacted copy of the affidavit used to authorize the search that led to fbi agents seizing 11 sets of classified documents. >> these are serious, serious national securityish eyes that have to be examined. >> reporter: the former president and allies demanded the whole affidavit be made public. >> so people can know whether there's a serious allegation or this is more manufactured. >> reporter: the judge agreed with the justice department that some information should be blacked out, because it could identify witnesses and law

enforcement and reveal strategy as well as sources and methods. still, there will be new information released. the judge describing the redactions as narrowly tailored. former president trump lashing out on his social media calling the investigation into his handling of sensitive documents politically motivated. president biden adamant he had no prior knowledge about the search. at a fund-raiser overnight he slammed maga republicans as a threat to democracy. >> they refuse to accept the will of the people. >> reporter: the trump legal team facing another deadline to better explain why they want a third party known as a special master to review evidence seized from mar-a-lago and determine if anything should be returned. >> to lend some neutrality to the process, i think it makes a bit of sense. >> reporter: the trump appointed judge reviewing that request questioning key elements of its legal basis.

and the judge in that special master case questioned why trump attorneys came to her instead of the judge who signed off on the search warrant, and she's asking the trump legal team to explain exactly what action the former president is seeking. laura, back to you. >> a lot of details there, thanks for covering it, alice. as students head back to school, their sleeping schedule will likely change. getting enough sleep so important, because studies show that it can reduce anxiety and boost school performance. joining us now is dr. rebecca jackson, the vice president of programs and outcome for brain balance. i love that name, brain balance. we all need a little bit of that in our lives. thank you so much, dr. jackson. let's get right to it. so let's talk about that. how do we know a kid is getting enough sleep, and how much sleep should a child get? >> you know, how much sleep is going to depend on their age and the rule of thumb is sort of more is better. for our teens, eight to ten

hours is great, for kids younger elementary age 9 to 12 is ideal. gauging their mood and behaviors is a good indicator. none of us function well when we're tired. we have a harder time paying attention, making decisions and managing our frustrations and upsets. so if you see those behaviors start to peak, i would look at sleep as a first place to start. >> i know that we've seen the studies getting enough sleep does help performance for those students but what if a child is anxious about school or something else in their life and they're not able to get to sleep to get those seven, eight, nine hours of sleep they may need. what are some tips they could do to try to help them go to sleep? >> looking to technology before bedtime is a great place to start if the child has a hard time falling asleep. spending time on a device or game before bedtime can signal to the brain it's time to be awake, not time to go to sleep. so in the hour leading up to

bedtime, having it be a family goal of not engaging in technology can help to start to create that signal to the brain that it's time to go to sleep. and keeping a consistent bedtime routine. that's part of a healthy sleep hygiene process is being consistent with the time you go to bed and the time you wake up. also, being mindful about what you're consuming in hours before bedtime. caffeine will peak about an hour after you consumed it, and it can take up to six hours to clear your system, so it's not still impacting you. and sugar, having those sweet snacks as a treat after dinner or before bedtime can also impact your blood sugars that can disrupt falling asleep and staying asleep once you fall asleep. >> dr. jackson and i talked about a lot. even if you're think being can i take naps, are those good. listen to what she had to say. go to our website, nbcbayarea.com, and go the the streaming app and find the interview for free on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and

online and find the story under our must-see play list there. >> let's see if today is going to be a good day weather wise to sneak in a nap. if it's cooler, it's nice and warm under the covers. kari is tracking that friday forecast. >> i think we're wishing we were still back in bed. >> i think so. that's whey want. >> i was thinking that. >> we do have a blanket of low clouds and fog over san francisco and it is causing some low visibility over the south county. right now, morgan hill visibility down to a half of a mile. it gets worse as you head farther south. just be wary of that, as you're heading off for your drive this morning. as far as our temperatures for today, we'll reach up to 83 degrees in santa rosa. 84 in martinez and up to 91 today in livermore, while oakland is in the low 70s. palo alto reaching 82 degrees and half moon bay a cool 60 degrees. we'll talk about a cooler weekend ahead. mike has a look at where we can find some lower gas prices. >> we found some cheaper places where you can fill up getting ready for your weekend, maybe you'll drive around road trips

locally. pleasanton fill up at the safeway along vernal avenue for $4.79 a gallon. daly city along the we lans ofiness in la, valero on mission street $4.95 and eeking just under the arco in pittsburg without an h on west leland road, gas is $4.99. look at the roadway, we have the sensors for a friday light as well, smooth flow of traffic and we expect lighter and later commute to kick in so out of the altamont pass over on the right, no problems for 580, just starting to slow down as you get through the altamont pass and in the south county we have no slowing through san martin but the bottom, you see that orangish? the road weather index registers fog but we don't hear about any problems for drivers. >> hope it stays that way. thanks, mike. fighting for better wages and rights. the bay area outdoor sporting goods store where workers are unionizing and the reason they say it was a necessary step. you're probably not taking

coverage to every spot in north america. this will take years to work out. the judge in the case of musk and twitter denied musk's request twitter supply him with trillions of data points as musk tries to prove twitter didn't tell him the truth about users and bots. the judge said twitter needed to turn over some data but the trillions of data points it was absurdly broad adding "no one in their right mind has ever tried to undertake such an effort." jay powell is speaking in jackson hole, wyoming, today. wall street has been speculating all week about that, what he might say, the run-up to this, the anticipation has whipsawed the markets back and forth. what could he say that could cause so much commotion in here's the chief economist from bank of the west. >> we're expecting a pretty hawkish speech from jerome powell. he's really going to have to keep the focus on reducing inflation, that means continuing to raise interest rates.

ugh. it's only available in three cities all of them east of mississippi. >> and they can stay there. >> i'll usually try these whacky things but i don't -- >> that one. >> yeah. >> imagine what it smells like? >> ew. >> i know. they're never good before you cook them. >> a pupsicle? >> yeah, let's move on. >> too early for it. people are having their breakfast. >> for me it's just coffee and we're starting out with hot coffee this morning as temperatures start out nice and cool, and this is the fog that we've seen over san francisco, where it's kept the city very chilly for quite a while, but it's really been helping us out in the inland valleys, keeping those temperatures down, so if you plan to head out for a hike in the east bay, nice day for it. we will start out partly to mostly cloudy, and then seeing the sun breaking out by late morning. at noon we're at 76 degrees and reaching into the upper 80s for later today. we'll see some upper 80s in the

south bay as well with cupertino reaching 87 degrees. also 87 in gilroy. for the east bay you're up to 90 in danville and martinez reaching 84 degrees. some temperatures will be cooler than what we had yesterday but we're back to the same temperatures for many of our microclimates today. san mateo reaching 75, and some upper 60s in downtown san francisco. 82 in novato and 98 in ukiah this afternoon. if you're looking for something to do this weekend, how about starting it off this evening in redwood city at music on the square. it's going to be a very nice evening, temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s to start. it will be cooling off quickly so bring the jacket and that will be the case for whatever you have planned to do for those evening hours. as we take a look at our inland temperatures, we're up to 90 today in some of the hottest spots in the east bay, like concord, as well as in parts of the north bay, but then going into the weekend, we may only be reaching into the low 80s for highs. it will be breezy, those clouds

may hold on a little bit longer throughout the morning, but then we will start to warm up again early next week. if you'll be out in the city in san francisco for the weekend, keep that jacket handy. we only reach into the mid-60s with breezy winds throughout the next couple of days. mike, you're looking at the changes in berkeley. >> check this out. come on, folks. look at that, they're all coming down the east shore freeway. all the lanes are filled in. this is gradually built over the last 20, 25 minutes here and now we have reason for perhaps some brake tap. the sensors still don't show any slowing here, but they have shown up over highway 37 and that's right on schedule for any monday through thursday, so friday a little bit lighter, just a tad. over here highway 4, let's check no slowing here coming into concord, pittsburg, bay point. that may hold off later and may last a shorter period of time in the morning, fridays tend to see that. we've had more volume of traffic through oakland yesterday, all week really. right now there's a crash

the arrests made in separate highway shootings and the technology that could help catch future suspects sooner. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. a very good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at the forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect there and the fog is sticking around for us today. >> yeah, it's kind of drifting around parts of the south county especially for visibility now dropped to about a mile and it's also pretty thick along the coastline. watch out for that as you're heading off for work this morning. as we can see, the marine layer is stretching inland. we see the morning clouds over the south bay. we'll start out with some low 60s as we typically do, and then we start to warm up, reaching eventually into the mid 80s. now, a lot of these temperatures basically what we've gotten used to, what we've seen the past couple of days that, continues today but there will be changes in the weekend forecast. we'll talk about that in a few

minutes and mike, you are tracking a possible problem in oakland? >> i first reported something going on maybe some debris around 35th going away from the maze, in the direction of the arrow but now there's another report, it is perhaps scattered along the roadway. multiple objects are reported east 580 from 35th over to basically the merge with the warren freeway. now your commute is the opposite direction. we don't see slowing in either direction. we'll keep track of what the chp updates on that. the easy, light drive for friday commute is great, extends through contra costa county down into the south bay, as kari talked about, maybe some fog creeping in to south county. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 5:32 right now. developing now, a south bay community is upset and unnerved other flavors targeting lgbtq people plus others ahead of this weekend's pride celebration. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is joining us now from what i'm understanding on the flyers is message of intolerance

and a political statement as well, kris. >> reporter: there are 50 of the hateful flyers posted around los gatos and one town council candidate named in particular. i want to show you what the flyers looked like. sop of the signs had a big no symbol over messages supporting the lgbtq+ community, black lives matter movement and critical race theory. statements like no more rainbow sidewalks and no more forced acceptance. along with the messages, the name of town council candidate rob moore. he told us he's surprised but another community member told us he's not. >> i was really upset when i first saw the flyers. i was surprised. i wasn't expecting to see my name plasted around downtown >> people just want to live their life, do what they want to do without big government telling them this is what you can and can't do. i think it's gotten a little out of hand. >> reporter: many of the signs were taken down by community members who saw them as they were going up and there's

speculation who's behind them. some people say they suspect the same group who has been harassing business owners and elected leaders before out in public but also at council meetings. both in this way and at town meetings is where some of that harassment happened. at this point we don't know if police will take any action. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> interesting to follow, thank you, kris. developing for you this morning, a big break that we want to tell you about in two recent bay area freeway shootings. the first one happened in june. the other in july. in the june shooting, a bullet shattered the front windshield of a car carrying an east bay couple on interstate 580 near grant avenue. the other on interstate 680 near san ramon. no one was seriously injured but chp isn't saying how investigators obtained the evidence. one hurdle a councilmember believes an expanding network of cameras that can help investigators.

>> so the local cities have camera networks. the important part is to have that camera network working on the freeway so we all are working together on this. >> chp says a 24-year-old from san leandro is in custody for one of those shootings. a 29-year-old from pleasanton in s in custody for the other shooting. the cases are not believed to be connected. new developments from b.a.r.t. which appears to be running ahead of schedule when it comes to a long-term infrastructure repair plan. b.a.r.t. says 38% of its planned workforce is now -- work rahert completed, set in motion by a voter approved bond measure in 2016, measure rr. b.a.r.t. started work the following year. it includes all the renovations being done on its aging rail and track system. let's take a live look in san jose this morning, as we get started. and hey, if you make weekend

plans, the silicon valley pride parade is back on. this is happening that parade will kick off tomorrow from julian and market streets in san jose to plaza decesar chavez park downtown at 9:00 a.m. nbc bay area and telemundo 48 proud sponsors of this event and some of us will be marching tomorrow so you can come by and say hello. >> as i mentioned, with he'll be up in berkeley for clearing the shelters so actually a busy bay area weekend. >> the website says the parade is on sunday but the festival is today, tomorrow and sunday so we'll have to straighten that out. >> let's celebrate all weekend. >> let's celebrate all weekend and check out the forecast. i wrote it up for sunday as pat raid starts at 10:30 in the morning and we should see those temperatures in the low 70s, really the weather is going to be perfect all weekend long, we will be cooler, only reaching into the upper 70s. if you're kicking off your weekend tonight at the oakland a's game, it will be in the low 70s at first pitch, and then we'll see those temperatures

cooling off, so you want to bring the jacket, because we know it's going to be chilly out there, going down into the low 60s. we also have the chinatown autumn moon festival happening. there's so much going on around the bay area this weekend. this is both saturday and sunday, but it will only reach about 65 degrees and it will be breezy with the sun just kind of peeking out so make sure you're dressed in layers. if you're headed up to muir woods to go for a hike, also chilly there, reaching into the low 60s. we'll see partly cloudy skies and we'll start out the morning at about 54 degrees. if your weekend plans take you to paso robles, you'll get much hotter temperatures especially today, reaching 92 degrees, but then some low 80s the rest of the weekend and it's going to be quite windy as we see some of those wind gusts slowing into the valley there. if your weekend plans are in south lake tahoe, it is going to be beautiful. mornings in the low 40s. sunshine and highs reaching into the low 80s, and it will be a nice quiet weekend there, we'll make it back to the bay area to

some cooler temperatures as well. we'll get a look at our weekend forecast. mike, you're taking a second look ahead. >> you should always look aheaden othe roadway but looking at timing issues that might affect you. we're tracking this debris and so there may be potential for a traffic break for eastbound 580 around 35th, but we know for sure also this will have some folks heading here for their friday, a little game after work, 6:40 at the oakland coliseum. the arena and coliseum is here but the traffic flow may slow this stretch of the nimitz. no major problems expected but the volume will increase. looking over here niles canyon boulevard will be closed they said saturday morning but what they really mean is a.m. from 12:01 until noon. the 12-hour stretch a portion closed and niles boulevard closed on sunday because there's an antique fair going on as well so check that out as well.

$183,000 and it was forgiven. the former baseball great curt schilling tweeted out those students were "lazy, unaccountable, uneducated children being covered by hard-working debt-paying americans." now the white house didn't point it out but many twitter users did that schilling founded a video game company that took a $75 million loan from the state of rhode island, only to default on it. the lawsuit filed later ended with a settlement that was less than the total. of course we're waiting on the release of that fbi affidavit in florida regarding the probable cause and suspicions that crimes were committed at mar-a-lago. the judge in the case received a redacted copy from the government, showing what the government would like to keep out, and then will decide before 9:00 a.m. our time whether to release that, the redacted part or seal it entirely. we'll be talking about that on social media. on twitter, follow

napa at 8:00 mostly cloudy, 59 degrees. but then at 10:00, it's mostly sunny, so you can see the sun will be breaking out, the clouds clearing out and temperatures really starting to warm up, headed for the low 80s today. we'll see some mid 80s for much of the south bay, with milpitas reaching 87 there. 89 in morgan hill and low 90s for a few spots in the interior east bay, with antioch reaching 92 degrees and martinez up to 84 and 82 in fremont. we're going to be very chilly near the coastline. if you are going to the beach, heads up it will be cool, bring the jacket and blanket, all of that stuff to stay warm. not only will it be cool but windy and in san francisco up to 60 in the outer sunset, upper 60s for the mission district. how hot in ukiah reaching 98 degrees and napa a comfortable 81 for this afternoon. we have a lot of events going on, including the palo alto festival of the arts. this is going on throughout the weekend, tomorrow the weather is just perfect.

we only make it up to about 75 degrees for the middle of the day but you just want to make sure you keep in mind that it's going to be so bright and sunny, you want to wear the sunscreen. also sunscreen needed in santa cruz, even though it's going to be cooler, and there will be the sun just peeking out from behind the clouds. we'll see highs reaching into the upper 60s for the weekend there, while some of our inland valleys reach 90 today, we'll bring it down to the low to mid 80s over the next few days, a cooldown there but doesn't last long. san francisco will also have a slight cooldown, mid-60s for the weekend and low 70s for next wednesday and thursday. mike, you were looking at the traffic on the bay bridge. >> it's getting to be more traffic, which more traffic at the bay bridge may not be an usual or unexpected phrase but it is friday and it is 5:52 so we are looking at the volume starting to build, maybe a little earlier, we'll watch to see the next few weeks see if that's a trend, again, talking about the fall schedule kicking
