i'm chris chmura here in for kira klapper. we are going to take you to clear the shelters in a little bit, but we're going to start the day with vianey and a quick look at our forecast. good morning, vianey. >> good morning. i'm excited about clear the shelters. binks, my rescue pet, is excited about his friends getting adopted today. the weather will be pleasant to take your new furry friend on a walk. it'll be cool and comfortable, exactly how binks enjoys his walks. we have the morning fog in san francisco. the marine layer is pretty low. we'll see that sticking around, especially around the coast for some time. you see how dense it is in santa rosa and the north bay. low cloud cover in the south bay, as well. current temperatures right now in the 50s. temperature trend by the afternoon, 12:00, 1:00, 60s in the forecast. the sunshine prevails, especially in the interior. 70s on the way. clear the shelters forecast coming up. we are following breaking news this morning in the south bay. san jose police are investigating how a teenager was

stabbed just after 1:30 this morning near quinby road. the victim has life-threatening injuries, and police are looking for the suspect. a double shooting and a chain reaction crash in oakland after 7:00 in the 2800 block of martin luther king jr. way. three men are dead, two with gunshot wounds, the third a bicyclist hit by a car that crashed while leaving the scene. the city's police chief says this is just another example of gun violence in the city. >> you know, it really highlights the fact that there are far too many people in our community with guns and willing to use guns in broad daylight. it's just really challenging for us when we have these incidents that happen like this that obviously take so many people's lives. >> police are still looking into how all this started. no names just yet. the gunman who shot a man

multiple times on a bart train is still on the loose. bart police descended on the train yesterday when it stopped at the lake meritt station. "today in the bay" says word of the shooting has riders being vigilant. >> reporter: the train was headed from fruitvale to daly city. hours after the shooting, riders tell us they're still on edge about their safety. shots ringing out on a bart train. >> started screaming bloody murder. after i heard the muffled voices, someone was trying to say, grab the police, someone got shot. >> reporter: at the station in oakland, sky ranger getting a view of the victim, a man taken to highland hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. in daly city where the train would have ended up -- >> it is crazy, really scary. >> after hearing the news, we were a little nervous. >> reporter: police say with all the surveillance they've seen, this appears to be a targeted shooting. they're also calling this a rare occurrence. >> very traumatic, enclosed areas, so we understand the angst that our riders would

have, being in an enclosed area such as a bart train. but, luckily, through our high presence and having more presence in our system, we're mitigating some of these issues from occurring. >> reporter: still, that's little comfort to riders we spoke with. >> definitely still a concern. i don't wear headphones at all, and i make sure we're both awake. i don't fall asleep. >> i take it every day. i took bart to work. every time the doors open, i tend to just put down my phone and look around. >> reporter: gia vang, "today in the bay." >> really good advice from the riders there. many gathered in oakland yesterday for a peace vigil. hundreds of people honored the victims of oakland's violence prompted by the asian-american dentist killed last week. the community came together in a large circle in the center of little saigon. this is the second vigil since sunday, when dentist lily shu

was shot and killed in little saigon. police are looking for the suspects. community members say they're standing in solidarity, sending a message that the violence must end. >> we are here to be reminded of how much stronger we are together, and despite the pain and loss, let that fuel us. >> little saigon business leaders have installed free security cameras at businesses. cops have beefed up patrols. a substation will open in september, in time for the start of little saigon's mid-autumn festival. many in the hindu community say there has been a recent rise in hindu-phobia. we have a latest example. the alleged victim recorded an entire confrontation. we have blurred the video since we have the suspect of the crime. >> reporter: the verbal attack.

[ bleep ]. >> reporter: he was insides this taco bell in fremont to pick up food when this man began to verbally attack him. even spitting at him at one point. >> why is he abusing you? what did they do wrong to be here? >> reporter: he said he immediately took out his phone and started recording. >> i was scared, to be honest with you. i mean, i was, scared, that what if this guy becs belligerent and comes after me? >> reporter: many in the community shaken up. >> it's so horrific. >> reporter: but not surprised. >> it's sort of what we have been dreading for a while. we've seen an increasing number of attacks on hindu americans.

>> reporter: the hindus of north america is a grassroots organization. >> it's been around a while, and it is unfortunately in focus right now partly because there are actors creating a lot of hate. >> reporter: what upset him even more, his alleged attacker is also indian. he has spoken to fremont police and the district attorney. while upset over the incident, he says he still loves living in fremont. >> just like any other city, i mean, it is very diverse. we absolutely love it here. i'm just, you know, appalled that this has happened. >> the fremont police department are actively investiging the incident. no word yet if the man in the video will face charges. >> thank you very much. the cdc says the monkeypox virus might be slowing down. that's according to cdc chief dr. rochelle walensky. she's cautiously optimistic that

vaccines and prevention strategies are working. cases are falling in major cities. for example, in new york, cases fell from 70 a day to just 9 a day. since may, the u.s. has reported more than 17,000 cases. california, unfortunately, has the most cases with about 3,300. there are also signs covid-19 is slowing down. cases and hospitalizations are falling, though experts do fear a long fall and winter are ahead with covid-19 and the flu. the seven-day positivity rate in california is now at about 10%. one month ago, it was around 15% or 16th, actually, there. 3,100 people in the state are currently in the hospital with covid-19. that was actually a big drop from a month ago, when it was 4,657. all right. san jose, police will not march in the silicon valley pride festival. the san jose police department asked to participate in full

uniform. silicon valley pride agreed to that, but asked officers not to wear their duty belts, which include their gun. sjpd says it won't work because the manual requires them to carry the gun and handcuffs in uniform. it reflects the feelings of the lgbtq. >> it doesn't represent all law enforcement, but it is still there. you know, the understanding needs to come on both ends and not just ours. >> ultimately, the two groups could not compromise, so the police withdrew from the parade. we have much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, not giving up their fight. a protest on the peninsula to protect geese. plus, we have clear the shelters on the mind. look who is working on a saturday morning. >> reporter: good morning! we are here at the berkeley

welcome back to "today in the bay." 12 minutes after 7:00. that's the bay bridge looking at the city of san francisco. vianey says expect 60s in the

city today with some cloud cover. her full forecast is right around the corner. after the fbi search of president trump's mar-a-lago home, we have a partial look at the search warrant. many parts of the 36-affidavit are blacked out, but it does receive the justice department believed highly sensitive national security information was kept there illegally. the feds recovered an initial set of documents from mar-a-lago in january, but agents suspected there were more. that's why they returned with a search warrant on august 8th, seizing many classified papers. now to foster city, where there is a fight to save geese. it is intensifying. activists and county leaders are now joining forces to prevent foster city from killing about 100 geese. last month, the city voted to move forward with potentially culling 100 geese to drop the

population. there is no timeline, but the supervisor believes there are other solutions. >> the animal protection league wants to put up $100,000. county of san mateo wants to see what we can do to support foster city's effort, but it is a regional effort, as well. >> the counsel member tells us the first vendor the city was working with backed out because of publicity. on monday, a new nasa rocket will be on its way to the moon. it's been 50 years since mission control and houston guided a lunar mission. nasa's original mission control was restored as a museum, down to the ashtrays, rc colas and more, reflecting the day in 1969 when "apollo 11" landed on the moon. it's been updated and runs the space station. next week, the artimus launch. nasa used the launch center until '92, through all 21 space shuffle missions. all month long, we are helping pets in need around the

bay area find a brand-new home, a forever home. it is part of our clear the shelters campaign. we have a lot of fun with it. we have enlisted marcus and laura in berkeley to help you perhaps find a furry friend. how is it going up there? >> look, it's great. there's only one event throughout the year that would get laura and i up on a weekend. this is the event. you have the dogs. you have the people. and you have all the volunteers. >> it is a great day out here, and it is true. you know, it's our time to sleep in. >> not today. >> this is worth it. dogs, cats, kittens, the works. we're at berkeley humane, and i want to bring in the executive director, jeffrey zerwick. there's so much planning that goes into this huge event. you're ready for today. >> we are so ready. you're absolutely right, we've been working on this for months. the last few weeks we've brought in lots of animals ready for adoption. >> including this dog here. what's its name?

>> laura garcia. she is just perfect. she is a 10-month-old pupally, and we are looking forward to her finding her family today and going home. >> forever home. that's the thing, you have dogs, cats, kittens, the works. something really for everyone. >> absolutely. and we have some rescue partners that are coming, as well. there already more than 100 animals available today for adoption. >> which is really nice. and we're talking about reduced or sometimes free? >> we have about 65 animals from berkeley humane that are all fee waived. it is so important because the shelters are really crowded right now. the more animals that go home today, the more lives we can save. >> when do you all open, so people know to come out? >> well, we technically start at 10:00 a.m., but people should come as soon as possible and start lining up. >> the lines get long. >> that's right. finish your coffee, get in the car, please come on down. >> throughout the morning, we'll show you different animals, like laura. maybe take her home. really, really good. you can come check them out because they have the kitty mobile here. it's really fun. you can come check out a marcus

i can guarantee that your pup will definitely help you, you know, enjoy your afternoon. also, they get you up and moving because you have to take them on walks. speaking of walks, how is the weather going to be shaping out? well, this forecast is for the berkeley area, because they're out in berkeley humane. the weather will be similar across the bay area with the exception of a little bit more cloud cover around the coastline. temperatures very comfortable. you know, binks prefers 70, so more of an interior dog. he needs a little sweater on him. he's not long haired. dog parents know. san francisco, if you're walking your dog around the beach, it'll be cloudy. we can expect to see some breezy winds, as well, at times, with breaks of sunshine in between. a little slower to clear. here's the reason why, you can see fog through parts of the north bay, as well. through the interior and down through the south bay in san jose. temperatures right now out the door in the 50s and the 60s. pretty comfortable out there. it's a little cooler right now,

about five degrees cooler in san jose. that is exactly what we're going to see this weekend. cooler temperatures compared to the past couple dais. forecast, 88 degrees in concord. oakland, 69. san jose, 83. though we'll be cooler, the temps will climb up into the upper 80s. as far as your air quality, good air quality for you and your new friend. it'll be fantastic for a morning hike. inland areas can expect to see conditions pretty, you know, nice over the next couple days. tomorrow, we're going to keep the sunshine. temperatures will be in the 80s. take a look at your forecast in san francisco. we start out with the morning fog yet again for tomorrow. daytime highs in the 60s. beautiful day to go adopt all of binks' friends at the shelters. chris. >> thank you very much. more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, it started with picking up one piece of trash. now, it's blossomed into an organization helping clean up organization helping clean up san francisco. here at city of refuge, we house up to 26 families.

our next story started with a dad and his two daughters walking in their san francisco neighborhood during the pandemic. well, that stroll sparked a mission. let's bring in garvin thomas with "today in the bay's" bay area proud. >> vince was like a lot of parents with little kids during the pandemic, running out of things to keep them occupied at home. now, he was also, like a lot of

san francisco residents, noticing how much trash there was on city streets. well, those two things have led vince on one big mission. >> how are you? >> good, good. >> reporter: in a mission district warehouse on a sunday morning, vince is leading by example. >> making sure i look decent. >> reporter: to get san franciscoians to do something they'd never done before, vince was willing to do something new. >> never dressed up as a jedi. >> reporter: vince invited fans of the "star wars" universe to make their part of the galaxy cleaner. >> it is not unique. >> reporter: it is a campaign vince started called refuse refuse. he message to fellow san franciscons, if you love your city, prove it. >> we say we love san francisco. we live here. we benefit from the great things. but it's got to be more than, like, i pay my taxes, right? >> reporter: it started, vince says, during the pandemic, looking for outdoor socially

distanced activities for him and his two girls. so they started picking up litter on their block every week. one day, a neighbor called out, asking if he could join them. >> we exchanged numbers. next week, he was out with me picking up trash alongside myself and my two kids. i was like, okay, there's something here, right? >> reporter: there was, it turns out, a lot more there. they've led 600 clean-ups all over the city, gathering more than 150,000 gallons of trash. >> places that remain clean tend to stay clean longer, as well. >> reporter: along the way, vince realized he was connecting with his community and his city in a way he never had before. and that, even more than the clean streets, is what vince really wants to share with others. picking up litter is just the easiest way to get people involved. >> picking up the trash is not as important an issue as homelessness, addiction, mental health, education, public

pretty cool. allows you time to focus and slow down. if you look in the sky, that's exactly what you're going to be seeing, as chris said, the clouds moving along. now, our temperatures are going to be a little cooler this weekend. great weather for an early morning run. so if you're out and about getting into the exercise in the morning, livermore, we've got some temperatures that will warm up into the 80s. this will be one of our warmer spots. you want to get that early morning jog out of the way kind of early because it starts to warm up by 11:00, 12:00. then we get lots of sunshine. maybe a nice hike is in store for you. i went hiking, you know, not too long ago, and it was so beautiful. today, the weather will be very pleasant. east bay hiking trails, look at this. mostly sunny conditions by 8:00 a.m. we'll get a lot more sunshine in through the interior. i'll talk more about the clear the shelters forecast and your pride parade forecast for san jose coming up in my next forecast. chris. >> that's right, it is tomorrow. vianey, thank you very much. we are following breaking news this morning in the south bay.

san jose police are investigating how a teenager was stabbed just after 1:30 this morning near quinby road. the young man has life-threatening injuries. detectives are looking for the suspect. up in oakland, police are searching for what led to a chaotic and deadly situation there. a double shooting and a chain reaction crash. just after 7:00 last night in the 2800 block of martin luther king jr. way, three men are now dead. two with gunshot wounds. the third, a bicyclist, hit by a car that crashed while leaving the scene. the city's police chief says this is just another example of gun violence in the city. >> it really highlights the fact that there are far too many people in the community with guns and willing to use guns in broad daylight. it's just really challenging for us when we have the incidents that happen like this and obviously take so many people's lives. >> police say they are still looking into how this started. we don't have any names yet.

average. that average is now down to 9 cases per day. the u.s. recorded more than 17,000 cases since may. you can see which states have the highest numbers. california has the most cases with 3,291 reported. a new legal battle involving the two main players in america's covid-19 vaccine rollout, pfizer. the suit involves claims of patent infringement tied to the mrna technology either company uses for its covid vaccinations. moderna says it is not seeking to remove pfizer's covid-19 vaccine from the market. instead, it wants money for pfizer continuing to sell the vaccine. pfizer says it's still reviewing the complaint but remains confident in the intellectual property of its vaccine. a candidate for san francisco supervisor was kicked off the november ballot. now, we're hearing from her

attorney. france aapi activist louie was running for the district 4 supervisor seat. yesterday, the city attorney ruled she failed to prove residency in district 4. her long-time family home is in district 10. louie's campaign website now offline. representatives say they provided ample evidence she lived in district 4. louie's attorney told us, in part, we are discussing the opinion with our client. let's have some fun. all month long, we have been helping pets in need around the bay area. help them find new forever homes. today is the pinnacle of our clear the shelters campaign. we are here to help you find your new furry friend. help them when they're being soyeah, they get to go home with something fun, which is awesome. not just a few here. you've been making how many, theo? >> i made 15. there's, like, 40 or so people all making them. so we have a lot. i don't know exactly how many. >> 500, i heard. >> yeah. >> 500 of these today. talk about the process of making these. you came here volunteering to help out one day, and then what? >> to make these, we cut the tennis balls and ripped up shirts. we braided the shirts and put them through the tennis balls. >> they are sturdy, aren't they? >> yeah, yeah. >> you were telling me. >> they give a lot of grip when you want to throw them. >> you can take home an animal, take home some of these, and take home some fun as well. we're going to have games. you can learn to make these, which is really nice. a lot of activities here. they block off the street out here at berkeley humane.

they drop to 6 1/2 games out the final wild card spot. tough. new fallout after the chp released video of paul pelosi's dui arrest. you might remember dash cam video shows nancy pelosi's husband undergoing a sobriety test in napa in may. at one point, he flashed a membership card for the highway patrol's 1199 foundation. its website states the non-profit provides emergency assistance to chp employees and scholarships to children. now, the foundation is revoking pelosi's lifetime membership. speaker pelosi's office declined to comment. we have been unable to reach paul pelosi for comment, as well. hundreds of people in oakland must soon find a new place to stay. a federal judge sided with cal trans, agreeing the people have

this morning near quinby road. cops are still looking for the suspect. the cdc says the monkeypox virus might be slow down. that's according to the cdc chief. she's cautiously optimistic vaccines and prevention strategies are working. cases are falling in major cities like new york. since may, the u.s. reported more than 17,000 cases. california has the most with nearly 3,300. okay, let's have some fun. all month long, we've been helping pets in need around the bay area find new homes. maybe if you have room in your home, in your heart, you can take home a new furry friend for free or nearly free.
