4:32 am
be the trend as we head through the week with the temperatures heating up and this weekend labor day weekend is looking really hot, so we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you were looking for a traffic alert on highway 4. >> i am. i had a good weekend but these folks did not have a good start to the monday, a couple cars involved in a crash, only the fast lane open for eastbound highway 4. chp declared there were five lanes available that may include an exit for san marco boulevard. only one is open. you don't see a lot of slowing because there's not a lot of traffic. a lot of activity, one vehicle may have two people still stuck inside the door, maybe wedged. that's my guess, i'll track that, crash 580 headed toward the maze but not as serious as on highway 4. back to you. a live look at cape canaveral's kennedy space center ahead of a moment in history, 50 years in the making. right now the question is when will that moment take place? nasa's artemis 1 was originally

its limits, really stressing it to get ready for crew. >> reporter: if successful, humans could be on a lunar orbit flight within two years, then a moon landing in 2025 or '26. it promises to be a future of firsts. >> it's a future where nasa will land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon. >> reporter: captain victor glover among several nasa astronauts hoping to be chosen. >> i wanted to walk on and work on the surface of the moon. >> reporter: for members of the artemis program today, the key emotion is pride, pride in their country and pride in the nation's ability to accomplish big things. >> it's a country that is strong because people come to gather here and do amazing things and it's a country that can reach for the stars that, can land on the moon and it can aspire to go to mars. >> reporter: the next era of american space exploration now here with artemis 1. chris pollone, nbc news, port canaveral, florida. >> nbc news will provide a special report when the historic

launch gets under way. the "today" show's craig melvin and tom costello will provide special coverage from kennedy space center and cape canaveral. due to delays, we're tracking when the blastoff will take place. when it does, we'll carry it live on nbc bay area. this morning, some are calling the tentative new deal to hike cal fire salaries long overdue. the new contract came into place late last week and includes a series of raises over the next year, shorter shifts and a monthly stipend for health insurance costs. cal fire crews are historically some of the lowest paid in the state, something the union has been pushing for, for years. union leaders say the idea is to get pay on par with that of other fire agencies as well as improving staffing shortages and reducing some of the job's most draining demands. >> it is the commitment from the administration to start reducing the work hours cal fire fighters
4:36 am
they work a 72-hour shift, the longest in the country. >> firefighters and state lawmakers must approve the deal which will increase annual state spending by $126 million by 2024. the time is running out if you get free covid tests from the gft. you have until this friday to order up to eight free tests that the post office will deliver to your home. the test site says congress hasn't provided additional funding for the program. the at-home covid test program launched in january. the white house says as soon as this fall, it will stop buying vaccine treatments and tests. if you're already expecting or looking to start your family, you may be in for a rude awakening when it comes to costs of raising a child especially if you're trying to make it in the bay. across the u.s., parents are spending an average of $286,000 per child this is from birth until the age of 17. local financial professional sam
4:37 am
gaeda from define financial planning joins us now. sam, i want to thank you so much for joining us, and let's talk about it. it seems parents are raising their kids in the same way. why are we seeing such a rise in cost of raising the children? >> i think it's not so much, you know, we expect costs to rise over time. i think what's the most concerning about raising a child today is the pace at which costs are rising. according to a recent study, we're seeing about 3% increase in prices over the inflation rate, meaning if long-term inflation is 3%, that means it's costing us 6% increase in child care costs over time and that's a little concerning. >> it's interesting when you see the numbers. you have to think about okay, in the bay area, it actually costs this much. so what are we seeing a lot of those parents spend most of the money on when it comes to raising the child? >> yeah, three major categories, housing, food and child care are the big ones. housing is just expensive.
4:38 am
we have to put a roof over our kids' heads and over time, those costs are increasing. they're increasing more today than ever. personally, i just looked up food, for example, snacks and baby food, two things that are on my mind because i have a 7-month-old daughter and a 3-year-old daughter, those are up 16% over the 12-month period. we're seeing drastic increases in food costs and child care. this is the big topic, at least every birthday party i go to for my kids, what are we paying for child care? i just did my personal numbers here, and just one year increase in child care is up about 11% in the 12-month period. we're seeing major increases and that's the thing. what we're seeing is major increases in child-specific items that are increasing much faster than the broad base inflation numbers.
4:39 am
>> you can watch that entire interview, we talked about it a lot more, streaming at nbc bay area's app and talked about the increasing costs of college. he actually shared some tips for parents to say just download our app and find that story under the must see play list. no matter how you look at it, it costs more. >> i have to stay here and keep working to pay for college. 4:39. testing the waters. next on "today in the bay," the new names apple's reportedly trademarking as the company prepares to introduce its first augmented reality headset. plus $3 movie? yeah, the new deal that you can take advantage of this weekend, and how long it will last. stick around. we'll tell you about that and much more this morning on "today in the bay."

4:48 am
beautiful look at san francisco, early this monday morning, starting out your work week, 4:47. so no doubt it's cool out there this morning. >> see all the lights. >> it's a nice stop to the weekend, not long enough. here we go to the work week, kari. >> it's starting out with a mostly clear sky across much of the bay area. there will be some patches of fog but looking hazy at times. we're going to see more wildfire smoke coming in, farther from the north it's starting to drift into the bay area, and that's going to have an impact on our air quality today, moderate at times, and let me show you our hour-by-hour near surface smoke model where we see the blues and even the green indicates some heavier amounts of smoke and the darker the color, the more unhealthy it is. we're starting to see it drifting into parts of the north bay especially by this afternoon, but covering much of the bay area, so once again, you do want to limit your time out there as we are going to see not
4:49 am
only the milder temperatures, but this is also being kind of mixed in with some of the low clouds and fog that we'll see. going into tomorrow morning, it does look like it starts to clear up a little bit with a slight shift in the wind direction. what's happening here is the smoke is coming straight down the coast being trapped in that marine layer and that inversion, and it's also once again just having a hard time mixing out for us for today. as far as temperatures, it's going to feel nice all thanks to the deeper layer of fog and the marine layer that we do have, as our temperatures head for the upper 60s in san francisco. oakland, san mateo reaching 75 and 85 in dublin. high temperature in san jose reaching 80 degrees. now tomorrow, those temperatures come up another degree or two for santa rosa, reaching 83 degrees and 92 in fairfield and then towards wednesday, it really starts to heat up in fairfield but much of the rest of the bay area still feeling some milder weather. headed toward the weekend, it's going to be really hot, as we
4:50 am
start to see this intense area of high pressure really building in, causing some hotter temperatures here. let me show you brentwood over the next ten days. today it's low 90s, but this weekend could be hitting 110 degrees. so yes, it's going to be brutal going into labor day, which we sometimes do see those really big spikes in temperatures this time of year, and we're getting ready for going from mid 80s inland to upper 90s and once again, it will be hotter for some of the interior valleys. san francisco will also be warming up as well but in the near term, enjoy the cooler temperatures. mike, you're hearing about a traffic break in oakland? >> kari, we were hearing but it looks like maybe from the update from chp, everything should have just cleared. i was watching for slower sensors west 580 at macarthur. the traffic break and the lanes in the debris should be cleared from the earlier crash, maybe it caused the earlier crash so just that note coming from 580 up the
4:51 am
warren freeway watch for that. the rest of the drive throughout contra costa county looks great, including highway 4 eastbound, that crash that alert that's cleared, everything is cleared and no word on the injuries but so far, nothing major was reported, that's good. your commute's okay through that area and for the south bay, including south county, no delays. we haven't started with that build out of san martin. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. the sinking of the millennium tower is one of the most expensive mistakes in san francisco and they're still trying to fix it. a new building permit was issued. nbc investigative investigator jackson van derbeken reports on the luxury tower. >> reporter: as you could see, construction crews behind me are digging on this side of the northwest side of the building. they've already installed 18 piles to bedrock and the city now says that's enough. those 18 piles go down to bedrock, to anchor the high-rise
4:52 am
to something solid and immovable. engineers believe that should finally stop the millennium tower from sinking and tilting and reverse some of the lean but each time crews started drilling and digging to install each of the piles, it caused the building to lean and sink even more, so fix officials eventually scrapped the original plan to install 52 support piles and submitted a new one that relies on just the 18 already in the ground. the plan is now to extend the foundation and acatch one corner of the building to some of those 18 piles, but that requires even more digging. as you can see, crews are busy digging 25 feet down on the northwest side of the building. >> the load transfer from the existing foundation to the new perimeter piles is very complex. >> reporter: veteran geotechnical engineer bob pike said by design, the piles are not supposed to be rigid, but more like adjustable cushion,
4:53 am
and he worries that, with only 18, the piles won't function as well as if there were 52. >> you don't stop continuing settlement, and so that's a basic flaw in the design. >> reporter: now that the city approved a plan, the work done at the corner of the tilting tower should be done by the end of this year, and six engineers stand by their assertion that the 18 support piles are enough to stop the sinking. jackson van derbeken, "nbc bay area news." >> you know, jackson has been covering this story from day one and continues to break news skon constantly. the fire that destroyed that san jose home depot store is due back in court. dylan j. cruz gochi faces charges of grand petty and grand theft as well as arson. prosecutors say that he set that
