7:00 a.m. on the west coast. we're certainly glad you're joining us this morning. savannah and hoda have the morning off. craig will join us in a little bit. good morning to you. >> yeah. good morning. vmas were huge. >> my goodness. >> if you are a taylor swift fan, you'll enjoy her news. we'll have all the highlights in a bit. first, let's get to the top story, history delayed down in florida. >> a big story. here's a live look at kennedy space center. nasa hoped that a new era of space exploration would be under way. that large rocket remains on the launch pad. >> we have former nasa restaurant here with us in new york city. nbc's tom costello standing by. tom, we start with you. walk us through what happened and that decision to scrub today's launch. >> yeah, really disappointing. the launch windows opened up at 8:30 eastern time, 8:33 to be precise. as they got close to it, things started happening.
7:04 am
they started having issues. let's start with the first issue. they thought they detected a crack on the outside of that big fuel tank that holds half a million gallons of liquid hydrogen. and that concerned them. they have since determined that crack appears to have only been in the installation foam not in the tank itself. so hopefully that's resolved. the but the second issue is maybe more serious. on the bottom you have four engines down here. each one of these engines is a reused really from the space shuttle days. one of those engines, the number three engine, is not getting proper flow, proper fuel flow from the liquid hydrogen. keep in mind, liquid hydrogen is negative 432 degrees fahrenheit. they're having trouble getting that liquid hydrogen into the number three engine. so that became a show stopper for them. they had to stop the entire launch. the question is how will they be able to resolve of this issue? can they fix it on the pad or do they need to roll this entire

assembly back to the vehicle assembly building behind me and rework the entire process? in the meantime, america's space program depends on artemis taking off safely off the pad. >> breaking news from launch pad 39-b at the kennedy space center this morning. >>. >> they have called a scrub for today. >> nasa postpones the launch of the artemis rocket. >> engineers working on a plan to continue gathering data about this particular engine. >> at first it was the weather causing problems then the team investigating a crack on the installation outside the massive fuel tank. and finally, a fuel flow problem with the number three engine. >> the issue that came up was an engine bleed that couldn't be remedied. >> nasa, of course, looking for perfect conditions before launching the massive artemis. at 322 feet, nearly double the height of the space shuttle and tank on the launch pad. using four reused space shuttle

engines with two booster rockets strapped to the sides, even louder and more powerful than the monster saturn five rockets from the apollo era. >> this mission goes with a lot of hopes and dreams of the lot of people. and we now are the artemis generation. >> the if all goes assen planned, astronauts could orbit in 2024 and a moon landing in '25 or '26. a new space station will orbit the room with astronauts spending six days on the moon base and one day mars. the lead flight director, we talked to him in the old apollo 11 mission control now restored down to the way it looked in 1969. >> you are building on 50, 60 years of nasa engineering expertise and experience. >> right. right. they figured it out back in that day, the apollo day. the trajectories we're using to get to the moon and back,

7:08 am
able to go friday. when i say that you're planning a trip to florida and maybe you'll get to see a space launch. so these things happen. there is delays for various reasons. tom had a good explanation of why they're holding off for today. they're going to check it out pretty closely these next couple days. and make a decision if they want to try again on friday. friday is the next opportunity within this week of opportunities. >> the if they can fix it right there -- >> if they can fix it on the pad, that's a good thing. that means they don't have to roll it back. so friday and then maybe if that doesn't work monday. if they have to roll back the vehicle assembly building, that's a bigger process. that takes more time. probably bigger issue that they can only do inside of a vehicle assembly building and that means it's going to be a longer delay. >> what's the thinking here? as tom pointed out, there are parts being reused from this space shuttle program. so should we be worried? >> no. i don't think about that. those are very liable engines. i think i flew on one of them at one point.
7:09 am
they're very good engines. high quality engines. i wouldn't be worried about anything right now. i think what is good is that they're showing caution, right? people may be remember the delay. yeah, took a long time. they certainly remember a tragedy, in this case no one is onboard. so we won't hurt anyone. but still, to go and not be ready is worse than taking a couple extra days. >> finally, for people that don't really know, can you put in speaker inspective what this mission is all about? how important it is? >> it's -- our next step in leaving our planet and really going somewhere else. we've been -- i mean people in space station for the last 20 years continuously. and now we're going to get set to go to the moon and beyond. and there is a lot of great things going on including as they mentioned the astronaut office has changed in 50 years, right? and it's going to be different people calling. the first people of color, the first women will be going to the moon. there is a lot of things about this artemis program that is
7:10 am
very exciting. this is just the first step. so we'll wait a couple more days. >> this one has to happen so we can get back to the next one? >> yeah. this is say big one. they're checking out -- it's not just the launch vehicle. we'll see how that works within the few hours of the launch, but it is also checking out that spacecraft. >> former astronaut mike massimino, thank you. if it doesn't happen today, thank you for spending time with us. a gunman opening fire at a bend, oregon grocery store. three people were killed, including the shooter. one other person suffered nonlife threatening injuries. police say the gunman entered a safeway store just after 7:00 last night and started firing. it's not clear how the suspected shooter died but police say they did not fire in their response. key developments surrounding the fbi search of former president donald trump's home. kelly o'donnell has the latest on this one. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. there is a new push from different corners to learn more about exactly what the fbi seized from the home of former

president donald trump today. and the big question, what was at risk to national security or intelligence assets like spies working for the u.s. government because mr. trump kept sensitive secrets at his private club in florida? this morning, the latest twist on the trump fbi search. two separate moves for mar-a-lago damage control. first, the director of national intelligence has told key leaders in congress that she has launched an assessment of the potential risk to national security. if secrets seized from the former president's home had been compromised, 11 sets of classified documents were removed in the search. plus another 184 classified documents recovered earlier as
7:12 am
described in the affidavit. democrats say that danger is real. >> he could be putting our national security at risk. he could be putting the lives of individual people who work for the united states at risk. >> reporter: and the second legal twist. a florida federal judge appointed by president trump writes that she is prepared to grant his request to appoint what's known as a special master. an independent official to review everything seized by the fbi. the judge also wants a more detailed list of what was removed and where those documents are now. judge cannon is giving the doj until tomorrow to respond. some republicans say more oversight of this investigation is needed. >> if you're going to take unprecedented action and raid a former president's house, you better have a strategy for unprecedented transparency. >> reporter: other republicans say mr. trump should have complied immediately. >> i understand he turned over a lot of documents he should have turned over all of them. >> it's up to the doj whether it's the level of indictment.
7:13 am
it's disgusting in my mind. >> still mr. trump's allies warn such a move by the doj could be met with major backlash. >> i'll say this, if there's a prosecution of donald trump for mishandling classified information, there will be riots in the street. >> former president trump has used his social media to insist he has done nothing wrong and repeatedly accuse the justice department and fbi of political prosecution, even prosecutorial misconduct. and there will be a hearing this thursday on the issue involving the special master. >> kelly o'donnell for us in washington. thank you. now to breaking news out of ukraine overnight. with intense fighting around europe's largest nuclear facility creating worldwide safety concerns the u.n. said an inspection team is on the way to that planet. megan fitzgerald has more on that. good morning.
