6:02 am
the roadways. >> the arrows show you the typical slowing, the traffic is flowing better for eastbound 80. let's zoom in to the earlier crash and the alert. there was a deadly crash overnight. that's the sad news. the good news is that traffic has cleared through the area at hilltop drive and also the slowing for the distraction has cleared from the westbound commute direction. it's a lighter drive. we still have a slow drive, south 880 to 92. we'll talk about details coming up. >> thanks. developing for you this morning, two more shootings targeting cars on busy bay area roadways. at least one of them on the freeway, and that one involved an off-duty police officer. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live for us this morning. that second shooting possibly involved a child. >> right. that happened around 10:00 last night. oakland police are investigating a possible shooting on eastbound 580 and park in oakland.
6:03 am
as you can see in this video, it ended with a crash on the side streets at 35th and brookdale. also in oakland. that's the vehicle that was shot at. at least one bullet hole is visible in the car. a witness told our photographer on the scene that she heard the crash, ran over to the wreck, says the woman driver was badly hurt and that a child in the car had also been shot. no confirmation yet from opd. in the south bay, law enforcement is looking for a person who shot at an off-duty san jose police officer as he was driving into work yesterday afternoon. this was on northbound 101 near highway 85. fortunately, the officer was not injured. the right passenger door, you can see there's a clear bullet hole there. he told chp he didn't see a gun but he heard a pop and described the suspect vehicle as a white hatchback with no license plates. the san jose police officers association said the officer was clearly shaken up. as is the rest of the law
6:04 am
enforcement community as they try to figure out if this was a random attack. >> with the rise in ambushes on law enforcement officers, obviously it enters our minds right away. you know, it's unclear at this time if this officer was targeted. >> earlier this year, the nbc bay area investigative unit found there were 28 shootings in 2019, 124 in 2020 and 178 in 2021. the governor's office announced a pilot program that would put 200 cameras in some of the bay area freeway locations. last week caltrans confirmed some of those cameras may be going up in several counties including alameda and contra costa. bob redell, "today in the bay." two people are in custody this morning after a late-night chase that ended with an arrest

in lafayette. you can see right here, that's where that car crashed into a deputy's cruiser. lafayette police say the chase started in el sobrante. deputies there corralled the car on woodboro road. police say there are no outstanding suspects. breaking overnight, the justice department is revealing new details about classified documents seized from former president trump's florida home. it now says evidence suggests that information was concealed and removed ahead of the fbi search. "today in the bay's" brie jackson is in washington with the latest. the justice department really waited until the 11th hour here. >> good morning, laura. 11th hour indeed. in that late-night filing, the justice department said over 100 unique, classified documents were seized. some were so sensitive and classified that fbi agents and justice department attorneys and fbi agents needed additional security
6:06 am
clearance to review them. >> reporter: an inside look at the evidence seized from former president trump's florida home. in this photo, included in the justice department's filing, you can see several documents clearly marked top secret. >> he wasn't supposed to have these documents under the law regardless of their classification level. >> reporter: doj's late-night filing cites efforts to obstruct its investigation saying government records were likely concealed and removed. and casting doubts on the trump team's cooperation, stating the fbi recovered twice as many documents with classification markings as the "diligent search that the former president's counsel had weeks to perform." this overnight filing comes ahead of a court hearing on thursday. a federal judge is weighing trump's request to appoint an independent third party, known as a special master, to review the documents recovered from mar-a-lago. >> they put on a number of conditions because they understand the judge may still
6:07 am
appoint the special master. >> reporter: justice officials argue appointing a special master would impede the government's criminal investigation. the judge in the case had signaled she's likely to rule in trump's favor. >> all of these things are calculated time delays that the trump team wants to take as they try to figure out strategy. >> reporter: in a speech on reducing gun violence, president biden condemned trump supporters threats. >> now it's sickening to see the new attacks on the fbi. threatening the life of law enforcement agents and their families for simply carrying out the law and doing their job. >> reporter: a job the justice department says is already complete, countering a need for a second pass on sifting through documents. and if a special master is appointed, the justice department has requested that that person be given a deadline to review the seized documents. while the federal judge has
6:08 am
signaled she's likely to assign a special master, we could soon find out if these files change her mind. the hearing in the case is scheduled for tomorrow. >> thanks for the latest. happening today, oakland city workers will be out in full force trying to clean thousands of dead fish along lake merritt. the concern is that the warmer weather is going to move in over the next few days, and that could lead to foul smell coming from those rotting fish. the city plans to post signs around the lake and to update the oakland website. the fish are dying from that toxic algae bloom in lake merritt's waters. and that will further impact what is being called one of san francisco bay's worst-ever algae blooms. >> the heat wave we're experiencing could certainly prolong this bloom and make it more intense. >> bay keeper scientist ian
6:09 am
wrenn says the blooms going on right now is unprecedented in the bay. he says no research models ever predicted a bloom of this size which could spread so fast. in this case, it started with tiny red algae, now making the water toxic and leading to the fish dying off there. wastewater treatment plant runoff is believed to be one of the major triggers for that bay bloom. a follow-up on the legal stalemate involving the 49ers and the city of santa clara. city leaders yesterday did not vote on the team's offer to settle legal battles surrounding levi stadium revenues and operations. city auditors accused the niners of not giving the city its fair share of money from non-football events held at the stadium. this is the second time this month santa clara leaders have debated but not decided on the team's settlement proposal. let's get a breath of fresh air, shall we? >> yes. >> while we can. tracking the incoming heat.

left it, and didn't think anything of it. i got a few messages over the years, and today is when it blew up. >> he got calls from everybody, he says. even some job offers based on just his sense of humor as well. he's perfectly happy at the job he has out there in baltimore. >> i would imagine. as a parent you could go on and on with all the stuff you do. >> hire him for creativity just because of that. okay. want to tell you about this. royal caribbean cruise lines will use spacex's network of satellites to provide internet service to guests and crews on its cruise ships. in june, the fcc authorized the company to use its starlink technology with moving vehicles. that move gives the green light to the company's plan to expand service to commercial airlines, ships and trucks. royal caribbean expects to complete installation by the end of march. mamma mia, what a traffic headache in tennessee.

6:21 am
temperatures ahead from friday, especially hitting us as we go towards saturday as this large area of high pressure builds across the region. that's going to shift our wind direction and cause more records starting first in southern california and building into the bay area. so, for here, we're looking at areas from monterey on southward. an excessive heat warning starting today. some of those temperatures will hit 115 degrees. here we're looking at highs up to 110. our excessive heat warning begins on saturday. it continues through tuesday. so we have several days on end dealing with some hot weather, and this is going to be the hottest stretch of weather since 2020 in august. that was in livermore. we had seven days in a row of temperatures over 100 degrees. in livermore, we're looking at about four days of highs over 100 in a row. there still will be some hot temperatures before and after that. overall, our inland temperatures reaching 100 degrees. mainly starting on saturday,
6:22 am
continuing through tuesday. and for san francisco, it looks like as of now we're still not going to see that high heat along the coastline. but it's still going to warm up to the low 80s there. definitely much more comfortable than 110. mike, you're getting an update on the crash in hayward? >> i have my fingers crossed we don't get to those high heats where i'm going. towards the roadway, looking at higher speeds. they just cleared the roadway from this crash that has left lanes blocked. in the last 40 seconds, south 880 is recovering now. that's greater news. a lighter traffic flow around the bay because of the three-day weekend for folks and some people are sneaking out early. a build for the commute in san jose. typical pattern there. no major issues there. a smooth flow of traffic slowing down through richmond in your commute direction. metering lights are on. back to you.

6:25. today marks 25 years since the death of princess diana. she died in a car crash in paris, and a quarter century later her legacy still touches so many peoples hearts. >> her sons have been outspoken and keeping their mother's legacy alive. >> good morning. you can still see that close bond between the public and the princess today, 25 years after her death. you see it in just the outpouring today of flowers in her honor at that paris tunnel where the accident happened back in 1997. and also here at kensington palace. people are honoring her by laying flowers and also hanging huge posters and pictures of the princess at the gates of kensington palace. one of which says her good works continue through her sons. her sons prince william and prince harry are marking this day privately.

6:32 am
>> mostly this weekend. we have a couple more days to prepare. today we're headed for 81 in san jose. 92 in morgan hill. we're starting to see a few more 90s towards the inland east bay. the north bay today reaching 86 in santa rosa. tomorrow, we see more of those temperatures going up several more degrees. as hot as 102 in fairfield. 100 in san martin. the 70s for the inner bay and along the coastline. for friday, it's a repeat of thursday. on saturday is when the excessive heat warning goes up. we'll see a lot more widespread temperatures into triple digits for areas in pink. we'll have a heat watch in effect for our coastal areas in the inner bay. this is when you do want to make sure you're limiting that time outside and once again, now is the time to prepare. because of these temperatures, cal iso is warning that it will probably be issuing flex alerts
6:33 am
over the next several days. we're bringing in ginger conejero saab live with more on what we need to know. >> carey, that's right. not just flex alerts, but cal iso already issued a restricted maintenance operations notice, which means power generators and transmission line generators are delaying maintenance so as not to take that transition equipment offline. that equipment will become necessary for us and our power usage. you mentioned those flex alerts, that's going to be expected in the coming days. it's all in an effort to prevent rolling black outs and interrupted consumer use. what does this all mean to the consumer? you're asked to be more mindful about your power usage during this stretch of hot weather. you're asked to ease off your air conditioning. set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher. you can avoid using large appliances like your dishwashers and washers and dryers, avoid charging your electric vehicles,
6:34 am
all of this during 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. that's usually when energy use soars. energy experts say this heat wave is potentially troublesome. high temperatures are forecasted throughout the west. california relies on importing electricity supplies from other western states, and if they are dealing with limited or interrupted supply, that could be a problem for us here. >> on a typical summer afternoon, the average usage in california is about 30,000 megawatts. and on a really hot day, it goes up to about 50,000 megawatts. and that difference is all air conditioning. >> that's a lot of power usage. all of this talk about power supply and limited consumption comes less than a week since the california air resources board announced an ambitious goal to ban the sale of new diesel and gas-powered vehicles by 2035.
6:35 am
so we're looking at electric charging stations like this one, people are questioning is this ambitious goal enough or okay to put pressure on california's electric grid now that we know the state relies heavily on western states, surrounding states for its power supply. we'll continue to monitor that continuing conversation as it goes along. live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab, "today in the bay." >> always concerning when there's a strain on that grid. thank you. don't forgot our nbcbay area app is a really great resource. it's free to download. you can get up-to-the minute weather alerts sent straight to your home. you can customize it for your neighborhood to track how hot it will get. we are following some breaking news right now in san francisco. this is video posted on citizen app of a fire. it's in a residential area on fitzgerald area, a few blocks
