southbound 101 approaching 85, a crash near blossom hill over on the shoulder. speeds at speed there. a smooth drive past the airport. closure on 101 has cleared but it looks like there may still be work crews on trimble. so you may have to reroute and prepare for that. san rafael, also 101, the crash heading toward novato has cleared toward the shoulder. any reroutes they'll be able to get around any lanes that may remain closed. back to you. as kari was telling us, much of the bay area about to see triple-digit here. people relying on electricity to try to stay cool. >> this is also prompting not only a statewide flex alert, but a person message from governor newsom. >> reporter: outside dining was

banned. that's what some people were looking for in downtown brentwood as they prepare for rising temperatures. >> it is very hot and it's going to get even hotter. >> reporter: the high of 96 degrees, it will be over 100. what are people planning to do? >> stay indoors and crank up that ac. >> reporter: that's what governor newsom is anticipating. he issued a state of emergency to temporarily increase energy production, warn californians to keep the thermostat at 78 degrees to take pressure off the power grid. >> try to pre cool earlier in the day the home. try not to use too much electricity in those key hours. the key hours are between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. >> pg&e officials are not anticipaing a public safety public shutoff. >> it's also red flag warnings,

work. fish have been dying due to an intense algae bloom, a problem not limited to lake merritt. bay waters are experiencing similar problems. warmer weather typically makes it worse. too much algae leaves less room for oxygen, and the concern in oakland is the rotting fish will lead to even stronger foul odors. chp investigating a deadly accident on interstate 680 involving a pedestrian walking in the northbound lanes. the car struck the person last night near jacqueline road off-ramp in milpitas. the driver stayed at the scene. only on nbc bay area, a drag queen story hour vent in the south bay disrupted by protesters. like other incidents we've seen in the bay area and elsewhere, participants were called homophobic and transphobic slurs. >> this time, the audience

fought back. >> reporter: they stood up, raised their voices, and this community cheers at a book store in campbell where they tell us a group showed up with signs and at one point a few of them pretended to be a part of the audience. >> saying some really transphobic stuff, calling me a transvestite, i shouldn't be allowed around the children and the parents should be ashamed of themselves. >> reporter: in the days leading up to this event, they received several phone calls against drag queen story time. they made sure to contact police before and during the event. police say the protest was in a public space and no laws were broking. >> i'm really proud of not only our gay, queer community, but the allies and parents that brought their children and made sure that their children knew nothing but the love and the light that we were there to be

there for. >> reporter: they were made aware of possible protesters, so they called on their lgbtq+ community to come out and make sure it didn't escalate as it has in recent incidents. just months ago, a group described as proud boys stormed into a drag queen story hour, turned into a possible hate crime investigation. it tells us we have a lot more work to do. i think even in a progressive state such as california that there's untd lying bigotry, underlying hate, there's underlying stereo typing and ignorance. >> reporter: even though the protesters continued their disruptions outside, tia kept reading, thing she says she couldn't have done without all the support she received. if you're planning to drive down to southern california, beware parts of interstate 5 are closed due to this exploding wildfire.

mike inouye is looking at the traffic. some people have started already? >> really it's only a three-day weekend. think about it. the roadways have been light this week f. you have colleagues, some may not schedule friday meetings and maybe early thursday the get away starts. check your tire, battery, belts, hoses. aaa gave me numbers showing what to expect this holiday weekend. their east central club anticipates giving roadside assistance to over 16,000 stranded motorists starting today through monday, september 5th. their data does sta at increase about midday. about a third they pose in this survey, of that group about 80% of them plan to go by car, truck or something else large with wheels i think. even though a big portion said they cut back on driving to save money because of expensive gasoline, they still are going

today in santa rosa. tomorrow is basically a repeat. there may even be a few spots going down a degree or two but still pretty warm in the interior valleys. as we go toward the weekend, let's talk about how hot it's going to be with brentwood reaching 100 degrees, 103 on saturday. mill valley up to about 84. san francisco in the 50s and 60s. for oakland, we'll see the temperatures in the upper 80s as we go into sunday. now, on monday, that's when we reach the peak of the heat. brentwood will reach 112 degrees. morgan hill reaching 103, while fremont will be in the low 90s. we'll see some of the temperatures near the coastline in the 50s and 60s, even some low stooes 70s, but the heat wave continues into wednesday. we'll talk about the excessive heat warning going up for all the areas as we deal with the heat for several days on end
