area to southern california, all the way to nevada as well. we'll see extreme temperatures. most of it starts to hit us as we go into the day tomorrow with our valley temperatures heating up. the weekend is when those excessive heat warnings will be going up. you can see the fog near the coast that keeps those temperatures cool as a lot of our inland valleys head for the triple digits. we'll be tracking that. mike, you were looking at the tri-valley. >> for folks looking at the map in this section, that's where you see it's not green. niles, we typically have that road closure. that should be picking up right this second. you should have a nice smooth drive between 680 and mission, but also on 84, but also cuts through pleasanton. a disabled flatbed may be a distraction. nothing big, but we'll send it right back to you. moving you forward on the new covid-19 booster shot.

the centers for disease control begin what's expected to be two days of hearings on finalizing plans for the rollouts. >> some believe you may not have to rush so fast. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live for us this morning. ginger, has the message changed here? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. to be clear, the messaging has not changed. doctors, health experts believe this booster as well -- the conversation revolves around the timing of it all and when people should get the booster. someone's covid exposure or risk to exposure is a personal one. if you're immunocompromised, pregnant or more susceptible, to reduce antibodies from your last vaccine, booster or infection, doctors say get it now. if you're not, ucsf's dr. monica

gandhi says you can hold off a bit. >> the more time between boosters and exposure is better because you get a better immune response. even though the fda said two months since your last booster shot, i'd make it more like four months. >> reporter: another infectious disease expert, dr. peter chin hong says the question is really all about timing. there has been some criticism about the speed of which these new boosters were developed. they have not had extensive research on humans. dr. peter points out the updated annual flu vaccine doesn't either. he hopes people will be reassured there are no surprises on the ingredient list. >> i think the benefits is that it will also prevent people from getting mild infections because it's stopping the enemy at the front door instead of waiting for the enemy to get inside. >> reporter: now, both doctors that we spoke to emphasized that

these photos here. investigators believe this car is connected to that homicide. this was spotted leaving the scene. if it looks familiar, you are asked to contact oakland police. developing this morning, the legal battle between the justice department and former president trump leads back to the florida courtroom. that's where the judge is expected to rule on whether to grand him a special master to review documents seize friday mar-a-lago. >> "today in the bay's" brie jackson live in washington. experts say it's not only one federal investigators found but where they found it that could spell more legal trouble for the former president. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. yeah, the storage of the documents were a concern that doj laid out, but the trump legal team continues to double down on its request to have a special master intervene in this case. that's despite the justice department's concerns about the storage of the classified

documents at mar-a-lago. trump's team downplayed those concerns and said there was no cause for alarm. >> the public legal battle over the fbi's search of former president trump's florida home heads into the courtroom this afternoon. trump's team arguing that left to their own devices, unchecked investigators would selectively leak their investigation. this in response to the justice department's bombshell filing including information on top secret documents as well as other classified evidence seized and displayed in this photo. >> the public believes this is top secret documents that were on his floor, it's ridiculous. >> reporter: trump's lawyers insist the need for a special master remains in place, renewing their push for an independent assessment of attorney-client privileged documents and what falls under executive privilege. >> so it's a little odd to be seeking a special master when you can't identify any of the

documents that you say are privileged. >> trump family members believe the federal government investigation is political. >> my father-in-law says he has nothing to hide, he did nothing wrong. >> reporter: the justice department filing suggests the former president could face legal trouble. the doj laying out evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed and that efforts were taken to obstruct the investigation, but no word on charges yet. >> what we need to do is let the fbi and federal prosecutors do their work, gather the facts and make their best judgment. >> reporter: later today a federal judge will determine whether a neutral third party will review the documents found. and the justice department has argued that appointing a special master could hinder the federal government's investigation. the judge in the case has signaled that she's likely to appoint a special master, but said she won't make a decision until after today's hearing. >> we'll wait and see what happens. brie, thanks for following it

all for us. 5:07 this morning. happening today, crews are in san jose today. they're expecting to start clearing up an encampment area considered too close to mineta airport. it formed two years ago around guadalupe river park. the faa ordered the city to remove it citing safety risks. both advocates fought to delay the sweep for months calling it inhumane. the faa then gave a september 1st deadline which is today. turning now to our climate in crisis, massive flooding is wreaking havoc on parts of the middle east. >> meteorologist kari hall is tracking the conditions. >> we're talking about it in today's climate in crisis. pack stint hit by that massive flooding caused by weeks of unprecedented monsoon rain. over a thousand people have been killed with more than 33 million people affected by that catastrophic flooding. although the rain stopped a few days ago, a third of pakistan

remains completely under water and the main rivers. many of those displaced are living in organized camps while others have had to find their own un/* own shelter. the government is calling for international aid saying they can't cope with this disaster on their own. we've been talking about extreme heat hitting us in the bay area, the thing that will protect san francisco is the fog we're seeing right now, keeping the temperatures cooler. as yes go throughout the day, temperatures start out in the upper 50s and only reach the low 70s while some of our interior valleys will reach over 100 degrees. san martin 100, livermore 98 and mid 90s in santa rosa. tomorrow still pretty hot. but this weekend is when some of the moment dangerous temperatures will be hitting our interior valleys. we'll talk more about that in a

party and those superpowerful chips are making that happen. take a look at this 3d interactive view of a wildfire. the computer doesn't just show firefighters where the fire is. it can use its power to predict where the fire is going. >> you want to know where you're going to put the fire risk in, where you have to move teams, where do you allocate resource, how do you coordinate aerial bombers and so on. >> we got a chance to look inside the labs at santa clara's nvidia. what they're doing is pretty amazing. this is a bmw plant, the assembly line where they make bmw suvs. this looks real, but it's not real at all. this is a factory inside the mind of a computer and rendered with state-of-the-art computing power. a 3d recreation in what chip maker nvidia calls the omniverse. >> omniverse is a platform we've been building for a number of

years. it's a platform designed for collaboration and simulation. >> the simulations are breathtaking. this is a ramen shop, again, not real. it's not going to help engineers design new cars, but this sure gives you an appreciation for how realistic virtual worlds can be. >> what sort of reactions do you get from people when they first see it? >> a lot of wow. >> i said that. >> the visuals are amazing. i want to show you the bmw thing. this looks like it's an actual factory. the reason this is more than just a pretty picture is not only can the computer create a realistic world virtually, it calculates the world as it behaves. when bmw looks at this, they can predict what's going to happen. what if we raise the height of a tool cart, will people work more quickly or will it slow them down? the computer can predict that. what if a robot breaks down on the factory floor? the computer can predict that as well. >> that's fascinating.

to the beach. let's get you started this morning, and look at how cool it is in parts of the north bay. 49 degrees. so that's when you open up the windows, you let the house cool down and then when the tour heats up, you close the windows, close the blinds, close everything up to keep those temperatures from rising too quickly inside the home. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we take a look at today's high temperatures around the bay area. san mateo, 77 degrees, and we'll see the high temperature in oakland today reaching 81. 99 in concord and 93 in dublin. going into the day tomorrow, we're still hitting the 90s inland. it will still be mild near the coast and parts of the inner bay, but even near los gatos, up to 92 degrees. going into the weekend, the heat wave ramps up on saturday. this is a look at sttd afternoon temperatures. this is how you can possibly make plans while san francisco will be in the mid 70s, santa rosa at 292, and 102 degrees as

you head over towards the san joaquin valley. as we go towards sunday, up to 111 in brentwood. morgan hill 107. and then on monday is when we are going to see a lot of these spots reaching the peak of the heat once again. concord up to 107 and fairfield 106. notice how san francisco will be in the mid 70s and half moon bay stays in the 60s thanks to the fog that will linger near the coast. going into tuesday, a lot more people heading back to work. it's still going to be sizzling in the valleys even on wednesday when the heat starts to come down just a little bit, but probably not enough after several days on end with that dangerous heat. this heat dome is developing across the region. we're not the only ones dealing with the record high temperatures going into the next several days. as we get some of the hottest temperatures on monday, the peak of the heat, it doesn't look like we'll set an all-time record, but we may set some daily high-temperature records

with san jose hitting 100 degrees. we take a look at half moon bay, temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. plan to maybe sit on the road a lot longer because it's going to take a long time to get there as a lot of people will be going. we're taking a look at the temperatures hitting the triple digits again and again while san francisco will be in the 70s and low 80s. mike, you're saying the roads are getting more crowded and less crowded today. >> yeah. let me explain. in the mornings we may see a lighter flow overall, then midday we may have more traffic because folks making a shift in their timing, either getting to the office earlier after packing up and getting out earlier or perhaps leaving town a little later in the day after they do their morning meetings online. the altamont pass, a smooth drive. a good volume increase. the speeds are slowing a tad bit. nothing going on for vasco or

close to livermore, the dublin interchange. that's moving very smoothly. looking toward highway 4, as you come in out of antioch, no slowing towards concord. that's an easy drive right now. we are seeing little blips here. closer toward 121. the bay bridge, reports of a disabled vehicle. i think it's on the upper deck getting in out of the treasure island. we'll wait until the bridge crew gets there and gives us the update. looking at the live sensors, but we don't see slowing coming around the bend and into san francisco. the getaway traffic out of san francisco may start this afternoon as well as folks get home and pack and hit the roads. >> i like how the extended weekend keeps getting a little more extended. next on "today in the bay," "nbc bay area responds." >> they discovered they've been paying double for their trash pickup, and there's a chance you are, too. i'm consumer investigator chris

only on nbc bay area, the protest that broke out at one south bay city and the way they came together to support the lgbtq community. a big asking from teachers as the nation faces a massive staffing shortage. the simple things parents can do to improve life in the classroom this school year. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, appletv and online. >> thanks for allowing us to be part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we have live team coverage on the bay area heat wave about to hit and how you can try to beat it a little bit. we'll start with a look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> it's going to heat up starting today as we look at the highs. in the south county, we're hitting 100 degrees as well as 103 in fairfield while santa rosa will be in the mid 90s today. notice how much cooler it's going to be near the coastline with upper 60s, and that's for the high temperatures today. we'll repeat it tomorrow.

then the high heat, the more dangerous heat hits us on saturday and continues through the labor day holiday. our temperatures in some of our hottest spots inland will be over 100 degrees, possibly reaching as high as 110. during those times, you want to make sure you're limiting your time outside, drinking lots of water and paying attention to the signs of heat-related illness and that potentially deadly heat wave coming to the bay area. we have "today in the bay's" bob redell where temperatures are expected to go over 100. say u the signs on the interstate that there's a flex alert in effect. >> reporter: yes. it looks like livermore will hit at least 103. there is a flex alert in effect later this afternoon. that's to reduce the strain on our electrical grid in the state of california. the independent system operator issued this flex alert from 4:00 this afternoon until 9:00 tonight.

governor gavin newsom issued a state of emergency and he's warning californians to please take this flex alert seriously. the advice is you want to pre cool your home before the flex alert kicks in. after 4:00 don't turn your thermostat below 78 degrees. save use of appliances like washer and dryer until after 9:00. be aware of symptoms of heat stroke. >> typically these patients will have lethary which is extreme confusion. in the case of heat stroke, these individuals need to cool off quickly and need to seek medical attention immediately. >> many cooling will be open throughout the bay area. for example, contra costa county las designated 21 library

and so were many parents in attendance. the store said they got a number of calls complaining about the event before it happened. so management was able to alert the performer, tory tia. police said the protesters were within their rights, but the audience pushed back, cheering as the protesters left the drag queen story time. >> i'm really proud of not only our gay, queer community, but of the allies and the parents that brought their children and made children knew nothing but the love bring. >> it tells us we have a lot more work to do. i think even in a progressive state such as california, there's still underlying bigotry, underlying hate, underlying stay tear /*

stereotyping. >> back in june a group described as proud boys tried to shut down the reading there. things did escalate and that particular incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime. marcus and laura. >> kris, thank you. 5:35 right now. moving you forward on the state of education and a lesson this morning from teachers to parents hoping to hammer home things that may be contributing to nationwide staffing shortages. the "today" show looking at the state of teaching in america. many districts are struggling to find adequate numbers of educators. vicky nguyen sits down with teachers on the east coast that say the extreme workload and the industry's toxic nature are partially to blame. in some cases two simple words could go a long way. >> a simple thank you and just showing gratitude that we're educating your children is all we need. >> whether it's the global pandemic, the gun violence pandemic, feeling under attack. >> what people don't realize, this is our dream job. the fact that people are leaving

their dream job because it's become so unbearable should be concerning everybody. >> the full story is coming up on the "today" show at 7:00 right after "today in the bay." if you're planning to drive down to southern california any time soon, i want you to beware, parts of interstate 5 are closed due to an exploding wildfire. it's already burned nearly 5,000 acres since noon yesterday. all southbound lanes are now closed near castatic on the grapevine. about 200 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders. eight firefighters have been sent to the hospital with heat-related injuries from the heat and the flames. meteorologist kari hall tracking the fire and weather conditions. it's hot all around. >> yes, it is hot. the heads-up that you can only take 101 to get to southern california as we are seeing the i-5 area around kasayic close as you may see the flames on the

right side. they closed it down and using it as a staging area. mike is tracking the conditions. if you're going there, it's going to be a hot weekend in l.a., too. temperatures reaching into the low 90s. mid 90s for highs throughout the rest of the weekend. if you will be in napa valley, also pretty hot. at least we have cool morning hours. we start out in the mid to upper 50s and temperatures hitting the mid to upper 90s. santa cruz will be definitely much more comfortable. a lot of our coastline keeping the milder weather with highs in the 70s and 80s for the weekend. you were talking about the traffic, getting out on the roads for the weekend. >> that's right, kari. i have an update for folks on i-5. stick around for that. i want to show traffic is moving smoothly on the bay bridge. as we look at the roadways, a smooth flow of traffic. as we look at the three-day weekend ahead, many may try to slip out early, maybe a little

later today. before your trip, check your tires, batteries, engines and fluids. aaa's east central club anticipates this number, roadside assistance may be given to over 16,000 stranded motorists from september 1st, that's today, through monday. so notice the stranded car count starts with today's travel. also, about a third of those they polled said they would be traveling this holiday weekend. of that group, just over 80% of them plan to travel by car, truck or something else with which we share these roads. the cost of gas may be cutting back on driving for some, but they're going to splurge on this holiday weekend. the getaway starts around midday. make your lunch and napkins and a trash bag. you don't want to litter. remember, also, the fire kari told you about near i-5, i just learned chp says there are a few lanes open i-5 south of the grapevine north of santa clarita.

met with educators about recruitment and retention. there will be another hearing today over the search of mar-a-lago. the trump team wants a federal judge to appoint a special master to go through the documents, separating some of them out. two key things to watch for today. number one, who? who do you get that has the security clearance to look inside folders marked top secret. second, what are they going to look for? normally a special master would scoop up anything in a search like personal letters or things protected by attorney-client privilege. the justice department says it's already assigned an independent team who did that and the work is done. the trump team waited two weeks after the search to ask for a special master. we'll be watching this very carefully. we'll talk about it on social media. on twitter you'll find me @scottmcgrew. new this morning, money and getting less for more clearly on the minds of a lot of people.

ramp up in temperatures on saturday. here is a look at what to expect all around the bay area for the middle of the day on saturday. concord at 100 degrees and 103 in brentwood. notice while san francisco will stay in the 70s and 80s, here it's definitely a lot more comfortable compared to what we'll be feeling in parts of the north bay, the inland east bay as well as the south bay. even on monday, labor day, we're still hitting a lot of triple digits here from napa to fairfield. brentwood as hot as 112 degrees. it's brute and very dangerous. most people don't realize house dangerous heat can be, one of the most deadly weather-related causes of death. we've got several days of temperatures hitting into the upper 90s and over 100 degrees. we do need to be very careful as this heat not only hits the bay area, but all across the region with this very strong heat dome that's going to keep our temperatures hot into the middle of next week. take a look at morgan hill.

what we're expecting throughout the weekend into labor day as well as into next week. it's going to take a while before it really cools off. we're looking at highs up to 100 today. slightly lower tomorrow, but then the big heat hitting us throughout the labor day holiday weekend. mike, you've been watching several incidents on the roads. >> we may have something new, kari or something that popped back up on the chp report. in the south bay we have the slowing we showed you on the last camera in san jose, typical timing, typical backup. we also have the metering lights at the bay bridge. they have been turned on. not looking any different from the live cam. over here this is looking different. we have a disability vehicle reported eastbound. it's opposite your commute. remember, through that area, you can see everything going on for 84. the commute westbound is distracted. the earlier issue around ruby hill, i think this disability vehicle is blocking one eastbound lane.
