wait for that extra level of protection. we're all talking about it. bracing for the heat. a live look across the bay area. meteorologist kari hall tracking just how high the temperatures may get where you live. the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now thursday morning o e. we're starting out with temperatures that are nice and cool this morning. but we are going to be heating up today. we've all been talking about this heat with the excessive heat warning that will be in effect starting on saturday, continuing through tuesday. then this is what's going to save san francisco, that fog you can see rolling over the city,
6:01 am
keeping it cool. but some of our inland areas will start to heat up starting today. tomorrow we continue with the cool coast and hot valleys. the weekend, the dangerous heat continues with highs over 100 degrees. there will be spots hitting 100 today. 103 in fairfield, 100 in san martin. more widespread 90s in the inland areas. mike, you were looking at a backup at the bay bridge. >> it did kick in a little earlier today. we talked about the holiday weekend coming in, an early escape for some folks. it's backing up about 10, 15 minutes earlier. the metering lights were turned on the regular time, maybe three minutes early. not a big deal, but a change in the morning commute. slowing on highway 4, highway 37. the disabled vehicle may be a distraction for that westbound 84 drive. the side of the freeway where

the disabled vehicle is coming into sunol, we have slowing and maybe another crash. i'm tracking it. 6:01. moving you forward on the new covid-19 booster shot. the centers for disease control begins two days of hearings on finalizing plans for the rollout. regulators gave emergency use authorization to pfizer and moderna. >> some believe you may not need to rush so fast. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live this morning. the messaging here, has that changed? >> reporter: good morning, marcus and laura. we should be clear the messaging has not changed throughout all of this. these new and improved boosters, as doctors like to call them, are still expected to prevent severe disease, hospitalizations and death. the conversation now revolves around the timing of when people should get it. the fda recommended two months
6:03 am
after your last covid shot or infection. risk factors vary. so if you're immunocompromised, pregnant or more susceptible to reduced antibodies from your last vaccine, booster or infection, doctors say get it now. if you're not, ucf doctor monica gandhi says >> the more time between boosters and exposure is better because you get a better immune response. even though the fda said two months since your last booster shot, i'd make it more like four months. >> reporter: another infectious disease expert, dr. peter chin-hong says the question is really all about timing. there has been some criticism about the speed of which these new bivalant boosters were developed. they have not had extensive research on humans. dr. peter points out the updated annual flu vaccine doesn't either. he hopes people will be reassured there are no surprises
6:04 am
on the ingredient list. >> i think the benefits is that it will also prevent people from getting mild infections because it's stopping the enemy at the front door instead of waiting for the enemy to get inside. >> reporter: the boosters will be available to everyone 12 years and older. there hasn't been a timeline yet on when the boosters will be available to those six months to 12 years old. the cdc is expected to give their clinical recommendation after the hearings and rollout is expected to start after labor day weekend. marcus and laura. >> it will be interesting to see how many people line up to get the shots or wait. >> or if they wait. from boosters to the latest information on updated health guidance, head to our website. we're tracking everything you need to know to keep you moving forward. head to nbcbayarea.com. there's a link right there on

our trending bar. a possible new lead in a recent oakland shooting that left three people dead including a bicyclist struck by a fleeing car. the other two people died at the scene from gunfire. this happened last friday a little after 7:00 p.m. at 29th avenue and mlk boulevard. i want you to take a look at these photos here. investigators believe this car is connected to that homicides. this was spotted leaving the scene. if it looks familiar, you are asked to contact oakland police. developing this morning, the legal battle between the justice department and former president trump heads back to the florida courtroom. that's where the judge is expected to rule on whether to grand him a special master to review documents seize friday mar-a-lago. >> brie jackson has more on not only what investigators found, but where they found it that
6:06 am
could spell more legal troubles for the former president. >> reporter: good morning, laura and marcus. some of the classified documents were found inside former president trump's desk in his personal office at mar-a-lago. so that's one of the issues, one of the concerns that has been raised. the trump legal team is doubling down on its request for a special master and also downplaying the concerns by the justice department about those classified documents that were stored at mar-a-lago saying there was no cause for alarm. >> reporter: the public legal battle over the fbi's search of former president trump's florida home heads into the courtroom this afternoon. trump's team arguing that left to their own devices, unchecked investigators would selectively leak bits of their investigation. this in response to the justice department's bombshell filing including information on top secret documents as well as other classified evidence seized and displayed in this photo.
6:07 am
>> the public believes this is top secret documents that were on his floor, it's ridiculous. >> reporter: trump's lawyers insist the need for a special master remains in place, renewing their push for an independent assessment of attorney-client privileged documents and what falls under executive privilege. >> so it's a little odd to be seeking a special master when you can't identify any of the documents that you say are privileged. >> trump family members believe the federal government investigation is political. >> my father-in-law says he has nothing to hide, he did nothing wrong. >> reporter: the justice department filing suggests the former president could face legal trouble. the doj laying out evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed and that efforts were taken to obstruct the investigation, but no word on charges yet. >> what we need to do is let the fbi and federal prosecutors do their work, gather the facts and make their best judgment. >> reporter: later today a federal judge will determine whether a neutral third party
6:08 am
will review the documents found. and the justice department has argued that appointing a special master could hinder the federal government's investigation. the judge in the case has signaled that she's likely to appoint one, but says she'll hold off on her decision until after today's court hearing. >> so interesting to follow these steps. thanks, brie. happening today, crews are in san jose today. they're expecting to start clearing up an encampment area considered too close to mineta airport. it formed two years ago around guadalupe river park. the faa ordered the city to remove it citing safety risks. both advocates fought to delay the sweep for months calling it inhumane. the faa then gave a september 1st deadline. turning now to our climate in crisis, massive flooding is wreaking havoc in parts of the

middle east. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the conditions the heavy rains have been left behind. >> we've been talking about this and look at pakistan hit with that massive flooding caused by weeks of unprecedented monsoon rains. over a thousand people have been killed with more than 33 million affected by that catastrophic flooding. although the rain stopped a few days ago, a third of pakistan remains completely under water and the main rivers are still swollen. many of those displaced are living in organized camps while others have had to find their own shelter. the government is calling for international aid saying they can't cope with this disaster on their own. as we look at our weather at home, we're bracing for high heat and we're starting with a clear run rise in san jose. if you're going to be out later today, try to do what you can

earlier as we take a look at brentwood with our temperatures in the low 60s to start. we'll see it trending more toward the mid 90s already by early in the afternoon as we head for the high of about 100 degrees in that area. livermore, we'll see a high of 98 and 92 in novato while san mateo will see a high of 77 degrees. a big range in temperatures. mike, i know people are hitting the road early. where can we find lower gas prices. >> trying to find the cheapest place to fill up. i've got a few recommendations from our friend at gas buddy. in campbell, $4.75 at speedway express on camden. one stop on 13th street in richmond $4.79. in burlingame, $4.85 at the a&a gas on broadway. a great drive for most of the day. the bay bridge, nothing unusual as far as the colors or the patterns. the timing a little earlier.

the bay bridge toll plaza is showing us a full toll plaza and it's not even 6:11. just coming on 6:11, i think folks are trying to get into the office and maybe get out a little early as well. >> no doubt. exactly. thank you very much. coming up, this is really cool, a view of the future. scott mcgrew is going to take us inside a silicon valley company to see something very few people have ever seen. >> that's right. computers creating whole new worlds. speaking of the future, let's check the futures, let's go out to some really negative numbers once again. we'll take a look at that as well. you're watching "today in the bay."

expected today. we had a lower close yesterday. oil is on its way down. nvidia shares are under pressure. the u.s. says nvidia based in santa clara can't sell certain chips to china and russia because their chips are too powerful. how powerful? we can talk about that. you've seen clips like this before, the so-called metaverse, at least the way facebook sees it. a place where you can meet friends and attend business meetings, while wearing a headset to pull you in to virtual reality. nvidia thinks the future of this whatever-verse might be more useful than just a virtual dance party and those superpowerful chips are making that happen. take a look at this 3d interactive view of a wildfire. the computer doesn't just show firefighters where the fire is. they can use the chips and the power to predict where the fire is going. >> you want to know where you're
6:16 am
going to put the fire break in, where you have to move teams, where do you allocate resource, how do you coordinate aerial bombers and so on. >> we got a chance to look inside the labs at santa clara's nvidia. what they're doing is pretty amazing. this is a bmw plant, the assembly line where they make bmw suvs. this looks real, but it's not real at all. this is a factory inside the mind of a computer and rendered with state-of-the-art computing power. a 3d recreation in what chip maker nvidia calls the omniverse. >> omniverse is a platform we've been building for a number of years. it's a platform designed for collaboration and simulation. >> the simulations are breathtaking. this is a ramen shop, again, not real. it's not going to help engineers design new cars, but this sure gives you an appreciation for how realistic virtual worlds can be. >> what sort of reactions do you get from people when they first see it? >> a lot of wow. >> i said that. >> the visuals are amazing.
6:17 am
>> i'm blown away by them. >> the bmw factory, one of the pro us deers said where is the computer generated -- no, no. this is the computer generated. this is more than a pretty picture. here is the critical part. not only is the computer creating a realistic world visually that you can see, it's also calculating how the world behaves. when bmw looks at this, they can predict what's going to happen. what if we raise the height of a tool cart. are people going to work more quickly or slow them down. >> ergonomically. >> right. what if the robots move around the factory floor, what if one of them gets stuck, will they block other robots or will they figure out a new path? it can all be done inside a computer so when you open your factory everything is ready to go. >> pretty amazing. >> it's pretty fun. >> no kidding.
6:18 am
can they tell when a guy named frank takes a smoke break or something? >> come on, frank. >> that is really interesting that they give you a peek inside. >> this is a chip company a lot of people only hear about as a stock price or whatnot. it's in everything. it's in all of ourself-driving cars. it's in video games. it's in cameras. they have some incredible -- >> it's exciting it's happening right where we live. >> i see what you mean when you say it's so powerful. look what it's able to do. >> amazing. >> thanks, scott. all right. it is 6:18 for you this morning. take a look at this. the sun is starting to rise over san jose getting started with the day. i love this part of the day because it's the coolest. >> and the most picturesque, too, as we see the fog rolling over san francisco. beautiful start to our thursday morning, and then we talk about
6:19 am
what's coming our way. warming up for the inland areas while the coastal areas in san francisco stay cool thanks to the fog. the weekend, the dangerous heat really hits us, especially for the interior valleys with highs over 100 degrees. take a look at today, the sfaft is already at the bottom of the screen as we see san mateo today reaching 77. in oakland it's hitting 81 degrees. then as you make your way farther inland in the east bay in livermore reaching 98 and 103 in fairfield. also hitting upper 90s in the south county today and tomorrow. it's basically a repeat. but then going into the weekend, the excessive heat warning goes up starting on saturday morning. it continues through tuesday. each and every day for all of these areas shaded in pink are going to be in areas where we can hit the upper 90s or even over 100 degrees. let's go through it. here is a look at saturday. in all of our microclimates and
6:20 am
where the high temperatures will be at 5:00 in the afternoon. dublin is at 92 while brentwood is at 103. going into sunday, it's even hotter for some of those spots like morgan hill reaching 107, san jose 99 and 101 in santa rosa. on labor day we're up to 96 in santa rosa. these temperatures really not cooling off too much, but notice the coastal areas staying in the 60s and 70s throughout this whole entire heat event. we're all just baking and the coast is like, eh, it's going to stay nice and mild here. we're going to stay away from that heat. even going into wednesday it's still hot. it's going to take a while before we can shake the heat wave. here is why. a large heat dome developing across the region. we're not the only ones dealing with this. likely a lot of records set throughout the next several days as we deal with triple-digit temperatures. and the reason we have to try to
6:21 am
conserve energy and save water, it's going to be tough here. as we go toward the next several days along the coastline and in san francisco, here we're seeing low 70s, low 80s over the next few days. mike, how is it looking in the east bay? >> looking at the bay bridge. we did see an earlier backup as farr as the visibility on this camera. all lanes are filled in at the toll plaza. the 880 over crossing as well. that happened about 15 minutes earlier than we often see on a thursday. we're looking at no major issues but a build for the eastshore freeway as well. again, talked about some people trying to get into the office early. over here we had quite a bit of slowing southbound 242 off highway 4. i think there may have been an incident that didn't get reported to chp. it's starting to smooth out now. it took about 15 minutes to sort out. we have a crash, a busted-up car eastbound, but no injuries reported. westbound has spectator slowing
