this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> good morning to you on this friday, thanks so much for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we begin with the high heat settling in across the bay area and the disruptions it's causing. another flex alert kicks in later today, with people being asked to conserve electricity due to added strain on the power grid your holiday weekend plans have changed. the east bay regional parks district is closing several locations and hiking trails sunday and monday due to high fire danger. the shoreline parks will remain open. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking high temperatures for us. what can we expect? >> we're dealing with hot temperatures inland but near the coast it will be much cooler in comparison, so you can see how widespread this heat is going to be across the region, whether you'll be traveling or staying here locally, you'll be dealing with hot weather especially if you move away from san francisco

in the inner bay. today we're looking at high temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 90s in the inland valleys, but tomorrow is when the heat really hits us and the excessive heat warning goes up starting at 11:00 in the morning that continues through tuesday evening, where some spots in the bay area could be hitting as hot as 110 degrees, so we're dealing with some heat that can be dangerous but heading off for work, vianey, any issues for the commute? >> no major issues. i hope people have ac in their cars headed into the weekend or it will be a rough one. we have fog impacting some of our bridges but overall okay when it comes to traffic. overnight fender benders cleared out, no major issues and drive times are moving along smoothly right now, van ness avenue to sfo 101 11 minutes. >> thank you very much, vianey.

president biden in a national address rolling up his sleeves to take on ultra conserative republicans. last night we called out maga republicans and influence of donald trump. the president suggested extreme views are hurting america's progress. he faulted trump's influence on election deniers and extremists who call for political violence, claiming they take away choice for americans. local bay area republicans believe biden's underlying motive may actually be the product of sagging approval numbers. >> too much of what's happening in our country today is not normal. donald trump and the maga republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic. >> i think there's an element of fear in the democrats and the biden administration, they must be seeing things into the polls that are absolutely terrifying them. >> some conservatives also believe biden's strategy may

backfire by turning off many voters who are ahead in the fall election. another death investigated as another senior care center run by the same company under scrutiny for a deadly accident this week on the peninsula. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us in our newsroom this morning. a lot of questions surrounding the new incident. >> in case you haven't been watching, this happened at a different atria facility from the one under investigation for the death of a 93-year-old woman. these are elder care facilities. the nbc bay area investigative unit was alerted to the death of 94-year-old constantine canoon who lived in walnut creek. he passed away on thursday and in a statement, the facility confirms that august 23rd he got sick at the facility in walnut creek and was transferred to a hospital. a resident at the atria walnut

creek community appeared to act negatively to something they ingested. we were informed last night that he passed away due to unknown causes. that happened four days before the death of 93-year-old trudy maxwell, a resident at the atria san mateo in a facility. there the senior living facility said staff accidentally gave 93-year-old trudy maxwell cleaning fluid to drink because they believed it was some sort of red fruit juice. two other residents there also drank that fluid, they were also hospitalized. at this point walnut creek police tell us there is no criminal investigation into the death but his son believes what happened to his father is similar to what happened to trudy maxwell, which is also still under investigation. marcus? police are hoping you've seen an suv investigators say is tied to an incident, a robbery in foster city.

nbc bay area later spoke with that victim. the 85-year-old man tells us he was shopping at costco 5:00 p.m. wednesday and a man approached him and struck up a conversation. and that's when a man and woman confronted him in his driveway, putting him in a headlock and ripping off a $30,000 rolex watch from his wrist. the victim chose not to show his face on camera. >> and i could have punched her, you know, but i thought wiser, because he may be armed and i don't think it's worth my life. >> last night police released this image of a white suv they believe is tied to the robbery, if it looks familiar, contact the foster city police department. two wildfires exploding overnight, this one in the sierra foothills. the woods fire started late last night near senora and jamestown. this is from an alert wildfire camera showing the spread of the flames. mandatory evac wags are now in

effect for nearby areas. so far there's no word on the containment or how many acres burned. north of the bay area in mendocino county, firefighters are battling an out-of-control fire near willits. it burned several hundred acres. there are evacuation orders there as well. in southern california the wildfire has been burning on the grapevine, all of the fires are just the latest reminder natural disasters can happen any time and that's why federal emergency management agency is launching a new campaign urging people to be ready for emergencies before they strike. september is national preparedness month. the agency is marking it with a new public service announcement called a lasting legacy. an agency spokesperson says federal emergency management agency is making an extra effort to focus on underrepresented communities. >> we also want to make sure that we're looking at and focusing on the underserved communities, focusing on the communities that may not have

all the resources and making sure that we ensure they're prepared for disasters. >> federal emergency management agency also emphasizes having a disaster kit on standby with nonperishable food, water, medication, toy receipt letries, batteries and food for your animals. a full list is on the website. >> it's a good time to talk about that because of the extreme heat we're experiencing and dry conditions. >> it doesn't have to be hot. it's been so dry. we tend to see more fires when those temperatures ramp up. you want to make sure you're prepared for that potential of fires and right now we have cool and high humidity as we start out this morning in sonoma. we've seen some light patches of fog drifting around. it's only 50 degrees right now there but 60 in san jose and 63 in livermore. for the weekend, you want to make sure that you're taking extra precaution dealing with the heat, that you're drinking lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty and wearing a hat that protects you from the sun,

a wet or cold towel really helps cool down your core temperature and don't forget the sunscreen if you're outside for long periods of time. never leave your pets or your children inside of a vehicle. it can get really hot inside those vehicles, even today as the temperatures aren't yet peaking but we are still hitting 98 degrees in san martin and fairfield. it's going on it 91 today in santa rosa and in martinez. so we'll talk more about that weekend heat. vianey, where can people find lower gas prices? >> it is labor day weekend, looking for low gas prices under $5. in brentwood at the powell market along brentwood boulevard, gas is $4.79 a gallon and daly city, alliance on south mayfair gas is $4.89 and in los gatos the mobile on north santa cruz avenue has gas for $4.94 a gallon. so just a couple of spots that you can stop by and fill up your tank before you hit the road over the weekend. i've been paying close attention

to any issues but looks like we're looking at friday light commute. haven't seen any major crashes to update you about and of course our drive times a smooth commute, southbound 101 from van ness avenue to sfo 11 minutes and southbound 101 from sfo to highway 92 about 5 minutes. a quick check of the east bay commutes southbound 680 to 580 vargas road 10 minutes and 238 to highway 84 only 10 minutes. i'll look how the rest of the drive times are doing in a few minutes. >> sounds good, thanks. 5:09. a new twist in the historic vote to unionize, workers in one amazon warehouse are the first anywhere to organize, but amazon is fighting the effort. next here on "today in the bay," the new federal decision seen as a certain setback for the retailing giant. it's jobs friday, but the numbers this time around could be kind of weird. i'll explain why, coming up.

we're headed for the low 90s here, but we know that there's also high heat ahead for the weekend. i'm helping you to get prepared in your forecast coming up. and good morning. let's take a look at your south bay drive time, northbound 101 from highway 85 about 18 minutes. northbound 85 from highway 101 about 20 minutes. no major accidents to tell you about. we'll look at the rest of your drive times coming up. good morning. happy friday to you. it is jobs friday, so we're going to get the august jobs report here in about 15 minutes. economists are the examining around 300,000 jobs were added last month, which sounds like a lot less than the blockbuster july report. look at that one. it is less. but just like we call the weather around here fogust, august job numbers are always foggy. people go on vacation, august tends to be smaller and look at the second line, revisions come into play. last year this time our initial number for august jobs was

235,000, that was later revised upward to 517,000. no matter what number we get, it's going to be one of those up is down, left is right, war is peace kind of bits of news. good news, lots of jobs will be interpreted as bad news by investors who are going to worry that more evidence the economy is doing well, and it is, will force the fed to raise interest rates even more than it already planned to. we're keeping our eye on a strange case out of the southern district of new york where federal prosecutors charged a woman with catfishing and blackmailing at least one male ceo of a publicly traded company. the feds don't name the man but the woman traded sexually explicit photos with him and threatened to take them public until he paid her off. twitter says it's going to

>> she's always parked crooked so i already know. >> anyway, anyway, my insurance premium is low. >> that's good. >> let's get started, because i know people have to drive to work and we just slow it down a little bit as you're driving because we are seeing patchy, dense fog especially in parts of the north bay, and santa rosa the visibility is down to about three-quarters of a mile. that's also going to once again keep those temperatures cooler for today. the fog lingering near the coast and it's not so foggy at half moon bay at 3 miles with the current visibility and the temperature there today headed for 68 degrees, just enough of a breeze to bring some of these temperatures down a few degrees compared to yesterday, but this is ahead of the big heat we've all been talking about, so we are able to enjoy one more day without just blasting the air conditioning. we're headed up for 78 degrees in hayward. 88 novato and 96 in concord today. tomorrow is when the excessive heat warning goes up and this includes all of our areas away

from the immediate coastline as well as the inner bay. still some heat advisories up and down the peninsula and into the east bay, so as we go through these temperatures, what to expect for tomorrow afternoon in fairfield it's reaching 97 degrees and 101 in brentwood. we'll see some upper 80s for san jose and then overnight temperatures drop back to the upper 60s before we go right into the triple digits on sunday, reaching 105 in brentwood and concord, up to 102, 93 in santa rosa and san francisco is going to be in the mid-70s, so once again, this is one of those heat waves where we have places to go escape the heat but if you're in the inland valleys, just plan if you plan to go to the coastline it's going to take quite a while to get there because you won't be the only one and in morgan hill on memorial day -- not memorial day, labor day, we'll be hitting 101 degrees and 106 in fairfield. on tuesday a lot more people are going back to work, it's still going to be hot. may not be until wednesday when

we start to see some milder temperatures coming in. we always advise never leave your kids or your vehicles inside of -- leave your vehicles or pets inside of a vehicle because of how hot it's going to be. take a look at what it feels like inside of a vehicle, at 70 degrees after an hour it's 112 degrees. at 80 degrees it feels like 123 degrees inside of a vehicle, and then as it gets even hotter inside of a closed car it can get as hot as 133 degrees. we talked about places where you can go and escape the heat. it's going to be in the upper 70s and low 80s along the coastline, but our inland valleys will be over 100 degrees over the next several days. so we'll be watching all of that. vianey, you've been keeping an eye on the roadways. how is it looking? >> we're doing pretty good. it is friday morning so we've got a friday light commute. it's labor day weekend. folks maybe have today off, could be the reason why we're not seeing too many cars on the

5:24 for you this morning. the crisis in mississippi continues. the city of jackson without safe drinking water for the fifth straight day. this is after a treatment plant was badly damaged by recent floods. water pressure has improved but people are still being told that it's not safe to drink that water, and as nbc news morgan chesky reports, the city hopes that water could be restored in the very near future amid the very hot labor day weekend there. >> reporter: five days after record flooding porsed an aging water treatment plant offline and the city of jackson still struggling to find out what comes next, but help has arrived here. national guardsmen, hundreds of them running water distribution sites all over the city, forced to rely on bottled water, because they still can't trust what's coming out of the tap. what city leaders say will hopefully make a huge difference coming up later on "today." >> those people need help bad.

streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. >> good morning to you. thank you for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm whereby shall. >> "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is tracking new efforts from leading agencies to take some stress off that power brid. >> this is looking all across the state stretching into nevada where there will be a large area of possibly record high temperatures set this weekend. the excessive heat warnings are going to be going up for us starting tomorrow, as far as temperatures today not yet hitting the peak, as we reach up to 95 in livermore tomorrow, for today we'll see some mid 80s for san jose. 77 in oakland and we're still keeping it nice and cool near the coastline.

tomorrow the temperatures heat up when the excessive heat warning goes into effect continuing through tuesday. several days on end with some high heat. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live with more on what we need to know. >> reporter: you mentioned the cooler temperatures on the coast, the anticipated heat wave is expected to bring possible interruptions to your routine. there are no scheduled public safety power shutoffs but that doesn't guarantee your lights won't go off in the next couple daves. the incoming heat wave means all hands on deck for pg&e. pg&e has increased staffing to handle weather related issues and are using specialized equipment in a allows them to see which areas are most impacted by the heat. you'll be seeing blue crew trucks around this weekend and into next week but that doesn't

guarantee your lights will stay on. there are no planned power shutoffs but the heat can be a big problem for equipment. >> when it's this hot and not cooling down overnight, our equipment does not have the opportunity to cool town when we see equipment failure which can lead to these heat-caused outages. >> another thing to watch out for the possible impact on your commute. b.a.r.t. will keep a close eye on the temperatures. you'll remember back in june a ten-car b.a.r.t. train partially derailed. it was traveling at 70 miles per hour and quickly determined the heat was to blame for that derailment. our investigative unit looked into what happened, that was an interesting story and b.a.r.t. said at the time, they did not have a formal policy to reduce speeds because of the heat. since then, b.a.r.t. officials say they have adopted a new

policy that requires trains to cut speeds in half when temperatures go above 100 degrees. we'll keep an eye out for possible train delays if they happen at all especially in the coming days as the temperatures are expected to soar. marcus and laura? >> try to keep cool. nbc bay area closely monitoring the weekend heat wave. get everything you need to know about the weather in your neighborhood from our nbc bay area app. it's always free to download. new overnight, san jose police are investigating a deadly double shooting, and so far, there's no confirmation on the condition of the victims. our photographer did see clear evidence someone died at the scene. this happened around 10:2030-on east william street near 24th street a few blocks from mckinley elementary school. no arrests have been made so far. on the rollout of a new covid booster shot the first supplies are likely to be distributed next week after the

cdc signed off on a plan authorizing pfizer and moderna to provide booster shots to better protect against the latest omicron subvariant. the pfizer vaccine is approved for people over the age of 12. moderna is for those 18 and older. happening today at 11:00, santa clara county will hold a meeting on the new booster rollout. sonoma county is putting its covid booster shots on hold, this is until updated formulas are delivered. happening today, a monkeypox vaccine distribution in oakland, this is the city refuge united church of christ on enterprise way. shots are offered at 11:00 a.m. and again tomorrow. organizers say the mission is to reach communities of color. this comes on news oakland is receiving ,400 new vaccine doses ahead of the city's pride parade this sunday and the pride fest events next weekend. new data is out showing the pandemic's widespread impact on

education. students across the nation are falling behind, that's according to the national assessment of educational progress, which tests thousands of 9-year-olds every year. in the five-decade history of the exams, this is the first time third and fourth graders lost ground in math. english scores dropped at the largest rate in more than 30 years. educators say after two and a half years of distance learning and disrupted class time, it's not hard to find the reasons why. >> a lot of our students who already were in many ways most vulnerable students are seeing the greatest impact. >> we need help. we need more adults in the school loving and teaching our kids, and that's what we've been asking for, for the last two years. >> among the most glaring disparities the drop in math scores among lower achievers was more than threeer achievers. the anticipation is

building, this is for the planned launch of nasa's artemis 1 rocket. a live look at nasa's kennedy space center, where a historic liftoff is still on track for tomorrow >> this comes after nasa scrubbed the initial launch due to a rocket engine problem. vianey arana is here to talk about the launch and its significance. >> we are all excited and we're keeping a close eye on things. meteorologist with the u.s. space force predict a 60% chance of favorable weather conditions during the two-hour launch window set to open at 2:17 eastern time, that's 11:17 pacific time. here's a live picture of the launch pad, although forecasters do expect a chance of showers during the launch window. systems are expected to be a go. artemis 1 will travel beyond the moon 280,000 miles from earth. what will happen during its 1.3 million-mile journey? >> after the upper stage of the rocket separates from orion the upper stage will deploy small satellites over several days to perform science experiments and technology demonstrations.

pavement, and never leave your children inside of a vehicle. check on them, too, while they're outside playing. as our temperatures today start to heat up, we're reaching into the mid 80s today in san jose, mid-90s in livermore, but tomorrow is when the excessive heat warning goes up that continues through tuesday. all of the areas shaded in pink will see high temperatures in the upper 90s and over 100 degrees, so we'll start to see that for brentwood tomorrow afternoon. these are temperatures we've seen before this season but it continues to get even hotter each day with our sunday high temperatures reaching 103 in fairfield and some upper 80s in fremont, but notice san francisco, half moon bay staying in the 60s and 70s. on labor day we're up to 109 in brentwood, and some mid 80s for oakland, even on tuesday, it's still really hot. on wednesday, we start to see more relief for more of our inland valleys. let's check out concord. we have three or four straight days of highs over 100 degrees,
