causing. a third straight flex alert kicks in later today with people asked to conserve electricity due to added strain on the power grid. >> your holiday weekend plans may have changes. east bay regional parks is closing several locations and hiking trails sunday and monday due to high fire danger. all shoreline parks will remain open. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the high temperatures and what we can expect. >> some of our coastal areas are cooler than interior parts of the east bay. we're starting out with fog this morning. a live look in oakland, the fog is what keeps the temperatures much lower along parts of the coast as well as the inner bay. as you're heading out the do are in oakland, expect temperatures in the mid-50s today, actually still staying fairly comfortable compared to what we do have ahead, reaching up to 77 degrees there. as you move over toward martinez, 91 degrees, and 82 in fremont, while livermore will see a high of 95 degrees, low 90s in santa rosa. tomorrow once again the

temperatures ramp up and we'll look at that in a few minutes. vianey, you've been watching the more than commute, people headed to work and getting out of town. >> it looks like right now the bay bridge toll plaza is doing good. no metering lights on just yet, but we are heading into labor day weekend so you want to get ahead of the traffic if you have plans to hit the road, whether that be on saturday, sunday or monday. let's take a look at your speed sensors throughout the bay area, we're doing good, green means go on my map and in san jose right now the south bay i did just see what appears to be some sort of crash pop up along 280, so i'm going to check the chp traffic reports and see what that is about, hopefully nothing too serious. westbound 580 from grant line road to 680 you're looking at 20 minutes. southbound 680 from 580 to vargas road ten minutes. another update on your traffic coming up in a few minutes. >> it is 6:02. president biden in a national address rolling up his sleeves to take on ultra conservative republicans. last night in pennsylvania, he

called out maga republicans and the influence of trfr trmp. he suggested extreme views are hurting america's progress. he faulted election deniers and extremists who call for political violence claiming they take away choice for americans. local bay area republicans believe biden's underlying motive may be the product of sagging approval numbers. too much of what's happening in our country today is not normal. donald trump and the maga republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic. >> i think there's an element of fear in the democrats and the biden administration, they must be seeing things into the polls that are absolutely terrifying them. >> some conservatives also believe biden's strategy may backfire by turning off many

voters still on the fence ahead of the fall election. for the second week the death at the atria senior living facility is under investigation. the facility are 40 miles apart but what happened to a 93-year-old and a 94-year-old man are similar enough that the family reached out to our investigative unit for some questions. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is following the latest on these investigations. kris? >> on wednesday, 94-year-old constantine could canoun passed away in a hospital. before that he lived in walnut creek. the son says what happened to his father sounded similar to a death in san mateo. they are working to determine how mr. conoun died. in a statement, the facility confirms that august 23rd he got sick at the facility in walnut creek and was transferred to a hospital. the statement goes on to say "a

resident appeared to suffer a negative reaction to something they ingested. it's unclear whether the resident ingested anything harmful. we were informed last night that he passed away due to unknown causes." mr. co now fell ill days before the death. this woman, 93-year-old trudy maxwell, who was a resident at the atria san mateo facility. there the senior living facility said staff accidentally gave 93-year-old trudy maxwell cleaning fluid to drink because they believed it was some sort of red fruit juice. two other residents there also drank that fluid, they were also hospitalized. that investigation into mix maxwell's death continues. walnut creek police tell us there is no criminal investigation into mr. canoun's death at this point. atria senior living is one of the biggest providers in the country and there are more than a dozen facilities around the bay area. marcus? >> kris, thank you. police are hoping you've seen an suv investigators say is

tied to a robbery plot in foster city. nbc bay area later spoke with that victim. the 85-year-old man tells us he was shopping at costco 5:00 p.m. wednesday and a man approached him and struck up a conversation. and that's when a man and woman confronted him in his driveway, putting him in a headlock and ripping off a $30,000 rolex watch from his wrist. the victim chose not to show his face on camera. >> and i could have punched her, you know, but i thought wiser, because he may be armed and i don't think it's worth my life. >> last night police released this image of a white suv they believe is tied to the robbery, if it looks familiar, contact the foster city police department. two wildfires exploding overnight, this one in the sierra foothills. the woods fire started late last

night near senora and jamestown. this is from an alert wildfire camera showing the spread of the flames. mandatory evacuations are now in effect for nearby areas. so far there's no word on the containment or how many acres burned. north of the bay area in mendocino county, firefighters are battling an out-of-control fire near willits. in mendocino county. as of last night the walker fire burned more than 100 acres. several neighborhoods are under evacuation orders. in southern california the wildfire has been burning on the grapevine, all of the fires are just the latest reminder natural disasters can happen any time and that's why federal emergency management agency is launching a new campaign urging people to be ready for emergencies before they strike. september is national preparedness month. the agency is marking it with a new public service announcement

called a lasting legacy. an agency spokesperson says federal emergency management agency is making an extra effort to focus on underrepresented communities. >> we also want to make sure that we're looking at and focusing on the underserved communities, focusing on the communities that may not have all the resources and making sure that we ensure they're prepared for disasters. >> fema also emphasizes having a disaster kit on standby with nonperishable food, water, meditation medication, batteries and food for your animals. a full list is on the website. >> all it takes is one little spark and things can quickly get out of control. this is coming at the same time we're dealing with high heat but i just love this shot behind us, the fog that's rolling through. that's going to keep temperatures cooler along the coastline and in san francisco, where we're starting out at 54 this morning. low 50s with some fog rolling around parts of the north bay, and we're at 60 degrees in san jose. if you are planning some outdoor activities, let's get a look at

brentwood. one of the spots that are heating up very quickly as we go from mid-60s this morning to those hot slides, i know the parents are always touching the slides to see how hot it is, it's going to be with an air temperature of 95, the sun beaming down, maybe too hot for the playground any time afternoon. we're headed for some mid-90s there, but not all of the bay area is dealing with extreme heat. napa 86. the heat is all about location across the bay area. i know people are hitting the roads. vianey arana has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> it is labor day weekend, looking for low gas prices under $5. in brentwood at the power market along brentwood boulevard, gas is $4.79 a gallon and daly city, alliance on south

mayfair avenue, gas is $4.89 and in los gatos the mobile on north santa cruz avenue has gas for $4.94 a gallon. so at least it's a little bit less than $5 if you plan to hit the roads for labor day weekend. keeping an eye out on the roads for today. it turned out to be holiday-light traffic but we're dealing with a crash from earlier, this along southbound 85 near saratoga avenue. it appears that the number three lane is blocked because of an earlier crash, so you might be catching a couple of delays through that stretch, and also a reminder if you're taking b.a.r.t., they are having some weekend track shutdowns because of construction from south hayward and union city, running a couple of free buss in place of the shutdown. check out the exact locations and expect to see weekend schedules if you have plans to travel through that monday, they are going to be running on labor day a couple on sunday schedule and a couple on a weekend

data released about 45 minutes ago. august numbers tend to be smaller as vacation numbers go up, and they were this time, too. compare that to july's blockbuster numbers. economists looking for about 300,000 and they got it. the unemployment rate rises to 3.7%. wages are up, participation rate is up and that could be part of what we're seeing with that move on the unemployment rate. more people wanted to return to the workforce. we're keeping an eye on a strange case out of the southern district of new york, federal the procutors charged a woman with catfishing and blackmailing at least one male ceo of a publicly traded company. the feds don't name the man but the woman traded sexually explicit photos with him and threatened to take them public until he paid her off.

she's used the aliases koya blackwood fuse and lyla cohen. twitter says it's going to release an edit button soon. many people complained they've made a typo in a tweet and don't have any way of correcting it without just deleting. soon there will be a way to correct it if you catch it in the first 30 minutes and your tweet will be marked as edited so that people know you made changes to it. the edit button will first be available to users of twitter blue, which is twitter's paid service. i don't know anybody who uses blue. >> i don't either. >> it will roll out to other people as well. i'm glad i got you a smile this morning. ticket this year. i think the last one was won recently by a guy in placer county. she was on vacation, stuck it in her purse, i should check it. >> then she's like let me buy a house here. >> stay in hawaii. >> i'm not going back home. they can have that stuff. >> that's amazing. if we could change our weather, all we have to do is just a short drive around the bay area, and we are going to see drastically different temperatures as we go into the weekend. so as we take a live look outside in dublin, it's starting out clear and sunny. this is where the temperatures are hotter today as you make your way closer to the inner bay, oakland starts out cloudy with some fog and it will be a while before we see some sun here but that's keeping the temperatures lower. we're expecting a high of 77 and it's going to reach you the to 88 in novato today and 89 in dublin with mid 80s in san jose. los gatos headed for 89 degrees. it's not too bad today.

it's starting to warm up but tomorrow is when we really will feel the dangerous heat and all of these areas shaded in pink will be included in that excessive heat warning, where the temperatures will be in the upper 90s, possibly up to 110 over the course of the next several days. notice it doesn't include the coastline or san francisco, but we are seeing a heat advisory for the inner bay so let's go through the temperatures. we have upper 60s expected for half moon bay tomorrow afternoon and oakland a high of 81. 101 in brentwood and on sunday the temperatures continue to heat up so we're seeing more of the triple digits as you make your way into the interior parts of the east bay and south bay and labor day it's over 100 degrees and for several hours that makes it dangerous, while we're still seeing some 70s near the coastline. even on tuesday into wednesday, it's very hot, but we do start to see the temperatures going down gradually for the middle of next week. we always say never leave your children or pets inside of a

vehicle, this is why, at 70 degrees after ten minutes the temperatures can get up to 90 degrees and eventually 112. at 80 degrees as hot as 123 degrees after an hour and at 90 degrees, it could reach as high as 133 degrees inside of a vehicle, so that is very dangerous, even just a few minutes will be extremely hot, and we know that our air temperatures will be even above that for some of our inland valleys over 100 degrees, we'll see this happening for days on end. the morning temperatures dropping back to the mid-60s, and for san francisco, it does stay cool thanks to the fog. we're only hitting the low 80s here for the weekend. vianey, any issues for the morning commute? >> no, but we're seeing the fog at the golden gate bridge, take a look at this, you can see a couple of commuters through there. chp issued a fog advisory for the golden gate bridge because of the limited visibility. meanwhile on the bay bridge toll plaza, this is what it looks like right now, one thing you'll

soar. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. good friday morning to you. thanks for starting your da with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. the bay area and the heat wave this morning we have live team coverage for you of those high temperatures expected across the bay area. >> "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is tracking new efforts from leading agencies to try to take the stress off that grid. first let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, looking at just how hot it's going to get. >> it's not just the bay area stressing the grid. this is happening across the region, all across the west where we're seeing the excessive heat warnings going up for the weekend, continuing through labor day. as far as temperatures today, not yet quite hitting some of those extreme temperatures that we're going to see ahead but we are still warming up into the low 90s for santa rosa, and in martinez with a high of 95 in livermore and upper 90s as you head down to the south county. tomorrow the excessive heat warning goes up and heat

advisories for the inner bay and starts saturday morning and continues through tuesday evening, several days highs over 99 degrees, over 110 in some spots and that's really going to potentially be very dangerous across the bay area. so "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live with more on what we need to know. ginger? >> reporter: kari, like you mentioned, some of those extreme temperatures haven't hit just yet. you can see in san francisco it's still foggy, that misty morning fog and we can continue to experience that probably in the next couple hours or so, but those temperatures are expected to get hotter and those flex alerts have already been extended as we know the incoming heat wave means all hands on deck for pg&e. pg&e has increased staffing to handle weather related issues and using specialized equipment that allows them to see which areas are most impacted by the

heat, so you'll be seeing those blue crew trucks around this weekend and into next week, but that doesn't guarantee that your lights will stay on. there are no planned power shutoffs just yet but the heat itself can be a big problem for equipment. >> when it's this hot and not cooling down overnight, our equipment does not have the opportunity to cool down, and that's when we'll sometimes see equipment failure, which can lead to these heat-caused outages. >> b.a.r.t. will also be keeping a close eye on those temperatures. you'll remember back in june, a ten-car b.a.r.t. train partially derailed in concord when temperatures soared past 100 degrees. that b.a.r.t. train was traveling at 70 miles per hour and it was quickly determined that the heat was to blame for that partial derailment. our investigative unit, our i unit looked into what happened. b.a.r.t. said they didn't have a formal policy to reduce speeds

because of the heat. since then officials adopted a new policy that requires trains to cut their speeds in half when temperatures go above 100 degrees. so we'll be watching out for possible train delays, maybe not today but in the coming days, and see if they happen at all. marcus and laura? >> thanks so much, ginger. nbc bay area is closely monitoring the weekend heat wave. get everything you need to know about the weather in your neighborhood from our nbc bay area app. it is always free to download. >> new overnight, san jose police are investigating an apparent deadly double homicide, so far there's no confirmation on the condition of the victims, but our photographer did see pretty clear evidence that someone likely died at the scene. this all happened around 10:30 last night on east william street near 24th street a few blocks from mckinley elementary school. police say no arrests have been made so far. moving you forward on the

rollout of a covid booster shot. the first supplies are likely to be distributed next week after the cdc signed off on a plan authorizing pfizer and moderna to provide booster shots to better protect against the latest omicron subvariants. the pfizer vaccine is approved for people over 12. moderna is for those 18 and older. happening today at 11:00, santa clara county will hold a meeting on the new booster rollout. sonoma county meanwhile pulling its covid booster shots and putting them on hold until those updated formulas are delivered. and happening today, a monkeypox vaccine distribution in oakland. this is at the city of refuge united church of christ on enterprise way. the shots are offered starting at 11:00 a.m. and again tomorrow. the organizers say the mission is to reach communities of color. this comes as news oakland is receiving 2,400 new vaccine doses ahead of the city's pride parade this sunday and pride

fest events next weekend. the anticipation continues for the most powerful rocket in the world. artemis 1. we're looking live at the launch pad, located at nasa's kennedy space center in florida. the historic mission is officially set to lift off tomorrow. >> this comes after its initial launch was called off due to a rocket engine problem on monday. vianey arana is here to talk a little bit more about this launch and its significance. >> in this is a big deal. we're looking forward to tomorrow and keeping a close eye on the weather conditions. the two-hour launch window is set to open at 2:17 eastern time, that's 11:17 pacific time. here is a live picture of the launch pad. forecasters expect a chance of showers during the launch window, systems are the examined to be a go. artemis 1 will travel beyond the moon 280,000 miles from earth. what will happen during its 1.3

friday light commute. we had a couple of early fender benders in the south bay. smooth commute westbound 580 toward the richmond bridge, about 9 minutes. no metering lights on at the bay bridge. . westbound 80 toward the bay bridge about 9 minutes and south bay drive times a little bit of slowing along northbound 101 from highway 85 because of an earlier crash cleared out. now you look at about 20 minutes. now let's get a look at our weekend weather, what it's going to be doing, kari? >> we're getting people ready for being here locally and traveling and i'm checking out some of the flight delays and where there may be issues. i'm seeing some storms developing in parts of missouri and arkansas, but as of now, it doesn't seem to have an impact on any flights, as we bring it back here west it's looking good for all of the flights that are on time whether traveling or staying here it's a great weekend. we are looking at quite a few events going on including music on the square in redwood city,

starts at 6:00 in the evening. we'll be at about 76 degrees. a cooldown with a clear sky, great evening for that. today the better day for the weekend to enjoy some of the festivities. if you're checking out south first fridays art walk in san jose, it's going to be warm to start but as the evening goes on, it does cool off quickly into the low 70s by 8:00. there's also the hiero festival happening in oakland this weekend, highs reaching into the mid-70s today. low to mid 80s throughout the weekend, make sure you wear the sunscreen and drink lots of water, even though the temperatures are going to be relatively mild there compared to what we'll see elsewhere. there's also the brasilia day festival in berkeley and upper 70s on sunday, a nice weekend as well. we're highlighting some of the cooler destinations, going to monterey, it's up to 66 today, and some low 70s throughout the weekend, but also some warmer weather for sonoma valley, their highs in the low to mid-90s. we'll get another look at that forecast coming up.

60s. whatever you have to to try to get it done early, outdoor workouts or yard work or running errands, you want to get it in before noon, antioch mid-60s and we head for 80 degrees at 10:00. you can see how fast it's going to be heating up today, at 1:00 it's 93 degrees here. take a look at the seven-day forecast, it's up at the bottom of the screen with several days of some high heat. so you want to make sure you're staying hydrated, drink lots of water, even if you don't feel thirsty and wearing a hat outside helps shade your head from the sun and cold, wet towel around your neck, cools down your core body temperature and don't forget the sunscreen and don't take the pets out walking in the middle of the day on the hot pavement and make sure they also have lots of water. today we're in the upper 60s in san francisco and mid 80s for dublin. we don't yet see the extreme heat. over the next several days the

temperatures get hotter and hotter for the inland valleys. brentwood saturday 101 and 95 in morgan hill. on sunday we're reaching into the triple digits pretty widespread numbers over 100 degrees for the interior parts of the east bay as well as the south county, and then on labor day is when we start to see the peak of those temperatures with brentwood hitting 109, but we're still in the low 70s in half moon bay, even on tuesday as more people are going back to work, we're still looking at some mid to upper 90s for the inland valleys. once again, several days of extreme heat and even the overnight temperatures don't come down that much, when we start to run into situations where people have heat exhaustion because your core body temperatures doesn't cool off even at night. for san francisco, we're in the 70s and low 80s here. any issues for the commute, vianey issues. a live look in dublin, it's moving. that's always good. a live look right now at a very

school. police did not say if arrests have been made. the woods fire started late last night near senora and jamestown. this is video from an alert wildfire camera showing the spread of those flames. mandatory evacuations are in effect for nearby areas. so far there's no word on containment or how many acres burned. north of the bay area in mendocino county, firefighters batting an out-of-control fire near willits. the walker fire burned more than 100 acres, several neighborhoods are under evacuation orders. any time we have high heat we know fires can quickly spread. we'll see that for interior parts of the bay area with triple-digit heat extending through tuesday. for san francisco they are much milder throughout the weekend. we're looking at highs in the upper 70s and low 80s throughout the weekend. >> and our drive times are doing pretty good, a live look at the san mateo bridge, we've got some fog covering some of the bridges
