i'm velena jones in for kira klapper. she has the day off today. vianey arana joins us with your microclimate forecast. it is going to be a hot one. >> tracking the heat, talking about the fire and the air quality nearby, and what to expect on this long weekend. great shot of san jose. you can see the orange glow there. there is a spare the air warning in effect. temperatures starting in the 60s. mid 60s in some areas, but it is going to get hotter. as far as the spare the air alert, expect it to remain in place. this is going to be a mix of poor air quality because of the high pressure that will continue to build over the weekend. also drifting smoke from the nearby fires, that's going to cause an area of concern. could create pockets of unhealthy air quality. heat watches and warnings will be in effect for the entire weekend through labor day monday. we're looking at the smoke from the impact of the nearby fires. if you notice, near surface smoke goes from hazy to

unhealthy, especially near the areas where the fires are actively burning. for more continuing coverage on that, let's send things over to velena. >> we start this morning with developing news, where a fire is destroying several homes in northern california, town of weed. it is still burning out of control at this hour. this is the new video of the destruction. neighborhoods unrecognizable. home after home in ruins. "associated press" reporting several people have been injured. weed is along i-5, not far from shasta. it's burned 4,000 acres and 0% contained. thousands of people have been forced from their homes, many without much notice. some of those evacuees traveled to the bay area to get to safety. "today in the bay" spoke to a woman who had to evacuate. >> reporter: the flames from the mill fire burning into the night as crews work to stop it from

growing. the fire began scorching structures and home in the town of weed. >> i must have dozed off, and all of a sudden, my phone went off, you know, that horrible screeching sound. >> reporter: the alert telling anastasia to get out of her home. she's on the way to safety at her daughter's in san jose. >> i pulled my drains to see what was going on, and i saw the fire was actually coming right at us. >> reporter: anastasia captured this video after she evacevacua. couple miles ago, this man was trying to find a way home but smoke and flames stopped him at every corner. >> hard to realize that, geez, it's everywhere around it. it's happened so quick. >> reporter: hue says it ballooned to acres, and

firefighters don't have any containment. >> i was a little scared. i actually got the shakes. i had to pull over almost every hour. i still have the shakes. i think it was the adrenaline rush. i still have the shakes right now. >> reporter: right now as she's pulled over on the side of the highway with her dog, hours away from her daughter's. >> yeah, you kind of feel helpless. you kind of -- i'm not sure if i'll have a home to go back to. >> reporter: gia vang, "today in the bay." new video of another fire burning in sisiyou county. the mill fire sparked yesterday on gazette callahan road, east of the mountain. fires are burning on both sides of the road, and evacuation orders are in place in the surrounding areas. the fire burned at least 1,500 acres and is 0% contained. cal fire says no structures have

been damaged so far. governor newsom is expanding emergency response during this heat wave. this is the executive order he issued just last night. this morning, the office of emergency services will give an update on the state's response to the excessive heat. that starts at 10:00 a.m. the energy demand has been high to support everything from air-conditioning to high school football games. "today in the day's" cheryl hurd was at the big game in concord. >> reporter: a late start for concord's season opener against san mateo's high school. the 8:00 p.m. kick-off giving mid 90 temperatures in concord a chance to cool down by evening. giving parents and varsity players a break from the heat. >> all week, we've had parents volunteer to drop off gatorade, pedialyte, keeping the boys hydrated all week. >> reporter: junior varsity players didn't get the same break as the varsity team. they had to play in the heat.

>> yeah, it's pretty tough. i mean, got to stay hydrated. >> it is very hard playing in this weather. there's a lot of substitutions in jv games because people getting tired. >> reporter: de la salle's athletic director has been preparing for a day like today. >> because we've had 100 degree weather for weeks, our kids work out through it, practice through it with helmet and pads. that helps. >> reporter: the bay area has been experiencing extreme weather for several days. the governor tonight expanding his emergency response by releasing additional flexibility for energy users and ramping up electricity supply to the state. governor newsom is asking to conserve energy from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. through saturday by avoiding the use of large appliances and setting the thermostat at 78 or higher. pg&e says there are no plans for a public safety shut off of power, but people should be on alert. >> we are prepared for the

possibility of heat-related power outages, potentially monday or tuesday. this is -- >> nbc bay area is closely monitoring the heat wave. get everything you need to know about the weather in your neighborhood from our app that's all free. road rage shooting in pittsburgh left a 12-year-old girl hospitalized. it all started shortly before 2:00 p.m. yesterday along buchanan road. police say a woman was driving with her three children in the car. officers say that's when a man pulled up next to the woman's car, pulled out a gun and shot inside her car. the bullet hit a 12-year-old in the leg. the mom then drove to a nearby shopping center where she called for help. medics took the girl to the hospital. she is expected to be okay. police say the suspected shooter is now in custody. new details in the fatal shooting of a young child on 880 in oakland last november. chp just released this photo of

the two vehicles they believe were involved in the homicide. one is a 2017 to 2010 infinity sedan. the other appears to be a nissan sedan. 23-month-old jasper wu was killed in november of 2021. that's when the chp says the two cars started shooting on 880 near 980 in oakland. the bullets hit the third car where wu was riding. anyone with information about the cars or the shooting should contact the chp. candle light held in honor of a woman gunned down in front of the salon where she worked. it happened near a strip mall of south 24th and east william in san jose. the killing was caught on camera. you see a man getting out of a car, pulling a gun and opening fire. he shot two people. a man who is recovering at the hospital and a woman who died at the scene.

friends identified her as suzy hernandez. the shooter is an ex-boyfriend she filed a restraining order against. police say the shooter was arrested yesterday morning as he was trying to flee the country. clean-up crews are making headway at a homeless encampment near the airport in san jose. workers picked up garbage and removed abandoned cars from guadeloupe gardens. the sweep is necessary for the city to meet an faa mandated deadline to move the encampment away from the airport or risk losing federal funding. advocates hoped to delay the sweep because of the heat wave. the city says it'll pause the cleanup during peak heat days topping 88 degrees starting saturday but will resume wednesday. 200 people live in the encampment. coming up, a crackdown on sideshows in the south bay. the new tool the city says it's
