"early today" starts right now good morning i'm cori coffin. >> and i'm frances rivera. thanks for joining us on this labor day monday morning we begin with dangerous weather disrupting parts of the nation over the holiday weekend in california, two wildfires forced thousands of evacuations. two people were killed in the state's mill fire that has grown to over 4,000 acre, decimating a 100-year-old community but first, to georgia, where the northwest part of the state is facing flash flooding with areas under a water boil advisory our raf sanchez starts us off. >> reporter: torrential rains sparking flash floods across north georgia.

roads washed out with 12 inches of rain falling in some areas in a matter of hours. this backyard transformed into a lake the governor declaring a state of emergency, and residents of the city of somerville told to boil water after drinking. >> it's going to be at least a day or two because we can assess the damage that has taken place at our water plant >> reporter: 11 million across the region under flood alerts through labor day, as far as indiana, where sheriffs discovered one dead. in california, the small town of weed is coming to terms with its losses dozens of homes destroyed with the historically black neighborhood lincoln heights the center of devastation, a 100-year-old community erased by flames in just a few hours. >> i ran and turned on the water faucet looked in the neighbor's backyard it was completely on fire. >> reporter: a tragedy all too

familiar for robert and barbara thomas, whose home burned, along with their granddaughter's down the block. just eight years after their relatives lost everything in a 2014 fire. >> it's a lot of mental anguish. it's a lot of hurting in this community now. >> reporter: across the west, 46 million are under heat alerts with many again facing potentially record-setting triple-digit temperatures. in california, the demand on the power grid is intensified. the effort to keep california's lights on is being directed from control centers like this. so far, the grid has held strong, but today will bring some of the hottest temperatures yet. authorities have been warning residents for days about the potential for rolling blackouts. >> those last few days are likely to be a dress rehearsal for what going to be a much more significantly stressed set of conditions here. >> reporter: while in arizona, this massive dust storm left thousands without power near phoenix, disrupting traffic and dimming friday night lights. a holiday weekend of extreme

that few will forget authorities in northern california now confirming at least two people have been killed in those fires. meanwhile, utilities here still concerned about overwhelming the power grid the top danger, too much demands, too many people at home cranking the air conditioning. >> okay, raf, thank you. let's turn to meteorologist michelle grossman who is tracking that system hi, michelle good morning. >> hi there, guys. great to see you and the extreme weather does continue we're looking at that heat, as raf mentioned. the flooding concerns in the northeast all the wathrough the southeast. we're also looking at the wildfire risk increasing throughout the day it's hot it's breezy. it's also dry. 46 million americans under a heat alert, whether an heat advisory or an extensive heat warning. we talked about it all week long last week, and we're going to be talking about it through midweek. we're looking at temperatures once again into the 90s, well into the triple-digits in many spots. so this is a setup we have the big area of high pressure a heat dome anchored in place. it's not budging yet

so far to the north. that's blocking any cooler air coming down. we're going to see temperatures 10 to 30 degrees above average for this time of year. we're going to see so many records broken oui already seen so many records broken also watching the risk for flooding we'll talk about that coming up. >> michelle, thank you breaking overnight police are on the hunt for two men who went on a stabbing spree in canada. ten people were killed, 15 others hurt. they believe some of the victims were targeted while others were random the attacks happened across multiple locations in the james cree nation and in the village of weldon in the providence of saskatchewan prime minister justin trudeau called the attacks heartbreaking. the hunt is on they are considered armed and dangerous. >> if damian and myles are listening or receive this information, i would ask that they turn themselves in to police immediately

we are asking residents across saskatchewan and our neighboring provinces to be vigilant >> authorities are combing through 13 different crime scenes they believe the two suspects are driving a black nissan rogue. in washington state, one person has been found dead and nine are missing after a float plane crashed in mutiny bay just north of seattle the coast guard is heading up search efforts in the area, working with local first responders officials say the plane was heading from friday harbor, a popular tourist destination, to the city of renton when it went down around 3:00 p.m. pacific time nine adults and one child were on board it's not known if the deceased person is a child or one of the adults the cause of the crash is being investigated there are new developments in the search for a missing memphis teacher. a man has been arrested in the disappearance of eliza fletcher after dna linked him to the area where she went missing nbc's jesse kirsch has more. >> reporter: authorities converging on this memphis

neighborhood, scouring the area as the search for this missing mother stretches into a third straight day police saying they found eliza fletcher's alleged captor, announcing he has been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence, saying he violently abducted fletcher friday, and won't tell police where to find the mother of two. more than anything, we want to see liza returned home safely. >> reporter: thursday, her prominent memphis family sharing this video, her husband clearly distraught, at times wiping away tears. new details adding to the heartbreak according to court documents, surveillance video early friday captured the moment the suspect got out of this suv, ran aggressively toward fletcher on her morning jog, and forced the junior kindergarten teacher into the vehicle before driving away. hours later, the affidavit says two witnesses including reported seeing the suspect wash his clothes in a sink and clean the inside of the car with floor

cleaner, behaving oddly, all before authorities found their suspect thanks in part to what was left behind at the scene, including a pair of sandals with dna allegedly matching him, helping lead to the suv and abstin himself according to police, he plead guilty in another kidnapping case more than 20 years ago. >> it's awful to see the evil that's in the world. and we are -- are praying with hope that she will be found alive. ♪ >> reporter: with her church,
