defying the laws of gravity ♪ ♪ (don't stop me now) ♪ ♪ 'cause i'm having a good time ♪ ♪ i don't wanna stop at all, yeah ♪ ♪ ah, da, da, da, da da, da, ah, ah ♪ right now at 4:30, the heat is still on. we don't have to tell you that. we will tell you the steps that bay area schools are taking to try to keep kids cool during class. also, the rising temperatures putting that strain on the power grid. >> every single year once we hit 110 power goes out. transformers blow. >> the power outages in the east bay and how some are managing to keep the power on. this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire tv, apple tv and on line. it is tuesday morning. and it is still hot out there.

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm chris sanchez. laura garcia, lucky to have this day off. i hope she's hunkered down with with serious ac because we need it. not everybody had it because we had a power outage. >> that is rough to have to deal with power outages when it's 116 degrees outside. unfortunately, i have some really bad news. >> oh, no. >> it's going to be even worse today. >> no. for how many more days? >> this is the peak of the heat. >> that's good news. >> this as kids are heading back to school, and we're dealing with power issues. right now we're in the upper 70s. some hilltops still in the 90 like the altamont pass, mt. dee abblow, santa cruz in the 90. mid 60s in the north bay. as we go into today, let's first head to the south bay. this is a look at highs. let me turn this fan off over

here. we have a fan right beside the weather wall. all right. it's 114 degrees today for the high temperature in gilroy. look at these tri-valley temperatures. 118 in livermore. oakland, 102. 104 in redwood city. san francisco in the low 90s once again. there will be some cooler air in the marina district and our north bay highs reaching as hot as 115. in clear lake today, napa reaching 108. this dangerous heat continues, and there will be some relief down the road. we'll talk more about that. mike, you were looking for something going on near treasure island. >> looking at treasure island, we are looking westbound. those taillights, i was watching for slowing because right there just after the tunnel reports of a disabled vehicle cleared from the chp report. no problems getting across. the slowing has cleared from the

sensors. whatever slowing we had has cleared for the last couple of minutes. toward the grand avenue onramp to eastbound 80, no more crashes, just cleared, as well, from the oakland chp. great drive to greet you for this first report of the show. a smooth flow throughout the east bay and north bay across the water. no major delays. altamont pass will see a build. now folks getting back for some who took the weekend off. back to you. >> thank you so much, mike. that heat is proving to be too much for the bay area's power grid, knocking out transformers, leach -- leaving tens of thousands in the dark. most happened in the east bay. terry mcsweeney is in livermore where some lights are still out this morning. >> reporter: we are in a neighborhood year con cannon and li from in neighborhood obviously in the dark. if you listen carefully, you can hear one way to get around the

outage. richard knows when he's likely to lose power at his home now livermore -- >> researchy single year once -- every single year once we hit 110, power's out. >> reporter: he has one of the generators we heard roaring. some neighbors wish they had one, too. >> i have a generator -- i powered my whole house except ac. >> reporter: fridge, lights -- >> all the lights work, internet works, everything works except for my ac. >> reporter: fairly large outages in napa, walnut creek, and pleasant hill. lights out at intersections leaving drivers on the honor system and leaving people like nick coming up with creative ways to cool off. >> my wife and i, we live five, ten minutes away. we've been driving around in the air conditioned car. we figured the price of gas and we haven't ran the ac yet today, believe it or not. we toughed it out until about noon, started driving around, hit hobby lobby. really cold place. >> reporter: pg&e stresses the outages are not planned

initiated by cal iso. they say the intense heat overwhelmed the equipment. >> duration of one to two hours, and they happen in blocks. when i say blocks, it's not necessarily a specific geographic area. one block of demand could have customers from across our service area. >> reporter: king says cal iso did not need rolling blackouts because of conservation efforts and the need to find additional resources. customers are asked to reduce consumption from 4:00 in the afternoon until 9:00 at night. >> thanks. you know, bay area beaches continue to stay packed. look at the cars. that's in marin county yesterday afternoon. the parking lot full before our midday newscast yesterday. by noon, sheriff's dead said if you're not out -- department said if you're not out there, you can't go. let's talk about fran beaches.

looked like this. >> my goodness. >> people having a good time. i want to dip my feet in there. this was looking like southern california, florida. no, this is the bay area. as you see here, our digital reporter was out having fun. caught up about beach-goers who say the warm weather made it a perfect beach day. >> never seen such crowds. didn't expect this. >> it's crowded. it's hot. it's beautiful. usually it's cold, foggy. i've never seen it like this and i live in the bay area. >> i come to this beach three times a week, and i've never seen it this packed. it's going to be on facebook, instagram. it's the holiday weekend, hot as hell. everyone wants to feel the sun on their skin. >> normally you cannot see the bridge, you know. you're like, i swear you're taking somebody who is not from san francisco on a walk here. you have to convince them that there there's actually a bridge

there unless you're driving over it. >> i ordered a mini air conditioner because our house is going to be a sauna tonight. >> parking is tough. it's wonderful until you have to go home to sleep with me to air continuing. we're going to stay here as long as we can. >> unfortunately we can't stay through today. today is the first day back to school and work. campuses are canceling outdoor activities, shortening the school day in places. districts across the bay area monitoring that forecast and getting ready to adjust. "today in the bay" with more on how schools are planning to keep students cool. >> reporter: it's been days with reentless heat, and it's not over yet. the historic heat wave is expected to continue as kids go back to school. >> i can still listen, but it sweats me when i wear warm clothes. >> we're concerned. but the schools there sent out emails today saying they are prepared for the heat.

>> reporter: in san jose, alum rock unified said they're monitoring the forecast and preparing to send cold water bottles to every site as long as their power isn't cut off. as for the south bay's biggest school district, san jose unified, says they have a strategy in case we see outages or acs break down. >> if a part of the building loses air continuing, we'll be moving, relockouting that class to -- relocating that class to a different room until we can get the ac repaired. >> reporter: the district says outdoor activities will remain limited, and any changes to pe or recesses will be on a case-by-case basis. >> we have 41 schools. some have a lot of shady areas. some of them have less. so it's going to be up to the school to decide. >> reporter: in cities like novato where temperatures are expected to reach triple digits once again, schools are announcing minimum days all week including lu sutton, novato high school. and the hill education center.

commute, they were out of town for the holiday weekend. we'll keep track of things on the outer reaches. now let's check in with your business world and bertha. >> reporter: good morning, mike. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. the markets posted the third street week of losses and continued worry about the federal reserve hiking interest rate as it fights inflation and signs of nasdaq extending its losing streak to six days on friday. that'swhe the dow erased a near 400-point gain to close down by p.m. 1%. focus today we're waiting on a report on the nation's services sector. meantime, porsche is revving up to go public. volkswagen is listing the sports carmaker in one of the biggest ipo in years. it could value porsche at more than $80 billion. that would make it more valuable

than all of volkswagen itself which includes the vw and luxury brands. it bought porsche nearly 15 years ago. the ipo expected to take place later this month or early in october. citigroup meantime is expanding lending to people without credit scores. the "wall street journal" reports that citi will launch two pilot programs early next year with the federal government. one will issue credit cards to people without credit scores, and the other will make it easier for small business-owned minorities -- businesses, rather, owned by minorities, women, and veterans to get access to credit. some 50 million americans lack that additional credit scores. that's a big -- really a big problem for people as they try to move ahead and maybe try to buy a home or try to buy a car. really need to build up that credit score. >> yeah. it's nice to get the credit. but we'll talk about the

toll bridge. keep the window up and turn the air on. it's hot out there even this early. the traffic, mike, is nice and smooth. >> exactly. it's cool on the roads. we do see some of these yellows and oranges and even reds. we don't want to see that. that red's slow, crawling at that pace. it just started here after 205 and 580 merge coming out of the altamont pass area. we've seen a little bit of a build kick in. vasco road under 20 minutes out of brentwood, byron, discovery bay. yesterday morning had a number of car fires to deal with. looking at hopefully a smoother drive this morning. we will track that. light traffic was yesterday. this morning heavier, but we shouldn't see major problems. the rest of the bay, smooth, easy drive. i'm going to show this, the san mateo bridge over the water just fine. getting to the beach yesterday, robert handa sent out a picture on facebook, it was packed salad.

probably the same today. >> probably the same thing again today. i'm going to show the golden gate bridge. that is all clear, and people swimming under the bridge with no fog. let's compare where we hit yesterday and the all-time hottest temperature we've ever mentioned. in gilroy yesterday, 112. the hottest temperature we've ever gotten there. 115. in liverpool we matched the all-time high, and a lot of numbers for to be will be close if not the hottest on record. let's look at highs and where we're expecting it to hit today. 105 in fremont and 108 in napa. san francisco back to 90 degrees. and 99 in san mateo. it's really going to be very dangerous out there with concord, fairfield, and liverpool possible reaching 118 degrees. tomorrow, it's only slightly better. we are still expecting some relief near the coastline with

some upper 70s there. then thursday temperatures creep back up. back in the triple digits and over 110 for some of our interior valleys. once again, we need to pay attention to the sign of heat-related illness, and here are some of the signs. you may have dizziness, thirstiness, sweating, rapid heart rate, and weakness. those are the signs of heat exhaustion. for heatstroke, there may be confusion, no more sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid strong pulse, and possibly a loss of consciousness. this once again as this large a of high pressure continues across the region. eventually it's going to weaken. that may allow for tropical moisture to slide in. we'll be watching that for the weekend. look,ing at our beach temperatures, this is going to be hot at stinson beach, 92 degrees today. at least we are looking at some more comfortable air for santa cruz as well as monterey.

our seven-day forecast still shows those highs over 100 degrees throughout the next several days. there will be more clouds on saturday and sunday. it's getting cooler there, while san francisco, back to 90 today. then we'll see upper 70s and low 80s in the forecast as we head into the weekend. now let's turn to our climate in crisis. we're looking at the radar, the satellite showing a lot of heavy rain. there's been some flooding with more rain headed toward georgia after a historic downpour just happened over the holiday weekend in georgia. there was about a foot of rain that fell in somerville. that submerged homes, swelling cross-examination and rivers, and washed away roads. this video of massive flooding is becoming all too common as we may see this go down as yet another one in 1,000-year flood u.s. so st. louis, eastern kentucky,
