temperatures will hit back in the triple digits once again. it's been torture. i'm almost ready to pull out the water hose and go old school. desperate times call for desperate measures. thousands are scrambling after the power outages during the peak of the heat wave. and apple ready to replace the iphone. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you on this wednesday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. >> i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez. we want to look at the forecast. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. we've been looking for a dip, but it won't be much of one. >> not much of one today. especially coming off these temperatures we had yesterday. look at some of these highs. we have a lot of people with weather sensors in their backyard, it goes into this

network of all of the temperatures. look at st. helena yesterday, hitting 119 degrees. unreal to see this kind of heat in the bay area. healdsburg hitting 117. pittsburg, pleasanton and saratoga yesterday hit 116. there were a lot of spots getting the hottest temperature they ever had on record. today it's going to be a little bit better. in comparison we're still above what's normal for this time of year. we may have some records, daily high temperature records being set today with san jose reaching 103 degrees. martinez will see a high of 104. 108 in napa, concord and brentwood. 80 today in san francisco. we'll talk about hotter temperatures for tomorrow and then what's ahead for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. thank you. so the extreme heat is being

compounded in some cases by power outages. this is an up-to-the-minute look at the map right here of outages across the bay area. earlier, this whole swath of san jose was in the dark. so things are resolving a bit. right now, none appear to be large-scale, and most are likely tied to equipment failures. a short time ago, we got this update from pg&e. it's a big improvement over last night. some 5,000 customers region-wide are waking up in the dark. the south bay has the most outages with more than 4,500. in the east bay, nearly 1,200 customers are out of power. just a handful in the north bay, peninsula and san francisco. so far, cal iso has not had to resort to rolling blackouts, some cities yesterday did conduct their own own localized outages. equipment failures are still happening including one blown

transformer in san jose that left a lot of people scrambling in the peak of the heat. >> tried to go to a couple libraries, this library shut down. other libraries were sort of overpacked as well. >> the state's emergency watch continues through at least friday, meaning the possibility of rolling outages will persist. pg&e has a tool you can access from our home page to see if your neighborhood is on the list of possible rolling blackouts. you can find that link on nbcbayarea.com. these hot conditions are not helping crews on the ground of a massive fire in southern california. the deadly fairview fire has burned 4,500 acres so far and just 5% contained as of this morning. now, at least seven homes have burned so far. thousands more are threatened. two people sad i will have died. now, evacuation orders have been expanded. and breaking overnight surrounding the fbi search of

former president trump's florida home. some of the documents recovered by federal agents have top-secret information. >> this adds to the growing concerns about that sensitive nature of the documents that donald trump stored. "today in the bay's" brie jackson joins us from washington, d.c. do we know what's in those documents? >> good morning. well, the "washington post" reports that some of the documents seized from former president trump's mar-a-lago home were not just top-secret, but need-to-know information. >> reporter: new revelations about the documents seized from former president trump's florida home. citing people familiar with the matter, the "washington post" reports some of the materials detailed top-secret u.s. operations, including highly classified information about a foreign government's nuclear program. >> it raises serious, serious concerns about what he was planning to do with the

document or may have already done with these documents. >> reporter: nbc news is working to confirm the reporting. a trump spokesman accused the "washington post" of being a propaganda arm for the biden administration. this all comes as the justice department is weighing an appeal after a judge ordered a special master review the evidence recovered from mar-a-lago, not halting the doj's criminal investigation but slowing it down. >> i don't think it changes the ball game so much as maybe we'll have a rain delay for a couple of innings. >> reporter: president biden is looking to shift the focus from his former opponent to successes under his administration including addressing climate change and lowering health care costs. >> passing these historic bills is only the first step in delivering to the american people. >> reporter: republicans claim democrats' policies are what's hurting americans. >> our democratic colleagues

have given no indication that cutting inflation, cutting crime or securing the border will be on the senate's agenda for september either. >> reporter: both sides looking to energize voters heading into november elections. and today, president biden will welcome former president barack obama and former first lady michelle obama to the white house for the unveiling of their official white house portrait. >> thank you very much. in just a few hours, apple will unveil the successor to the iphone 13. >> scott mcgrew, i don't want to spoil it, i think it will be called iphone 14. >> we were surprised it was called the iphone 14. i don't think we'll be surprised by 14. apple sent out an invitation for the 10:00 a.m. announcement. it will once again be virtual for most people. they're calling this event far out. it has a space theme. what that means, they're keeping a secret. we have speculated in the past the new phones may be able to make satellite connections of some kind. this is video from a previous announcement. today's announcement should look similar. we looked through some of the

predictions online. here are some common ones. these are just guesses. they'll get rid of the notch at the top of the screen. people don't like it. it contains the front-facing camera. and all the cameras will be, no doubt, upgraded. maybe an always-on lock screen so you can just look over to your phone and check your time and see a widget. and if tradition holds, the announcement today will have things go on preorder next week. usually they do it on friday. this has been true for a while, we have not seen a brand-new product in quite some time. there have been improvements. iphones get better, sometimes a lot better at what they do. the difference in cameras in a couple of generations is shocking. but it's been a while since we saw a big leap forward. >> to have a new feature, something like connecting with satellite is a big deal. >> that's a big deal. it could change the way people live and work and get rescued. if you're in death valley or if

don't pant. usually if a cat is panting, they're in distress. it could be, say, on this hot day today, it could be due to having heatstroke. >> in dogs, excessive drooling, disorientation, red gums. water and baths are certainly the easiest way to keep them comfortable and managing walks and avoid walking unless it's cool. meteorologist kari hall is here. we thought the dog days of summer were behind us. >> i think this is it. hopefully there's no more like this. this has been really brutal. >> people don't have air conditioning. >> i know. >> those people being me. >> i know. this is the time to let the house cool down. go out for that walk. we talk about not only signs of heat exhaustion in pets but how
