cooler weather in some places finally arrives. and the end of an era. with the death of britain's longest reigning monarch, queen elizabeth ii, ahead in a live report, the next steps already in motion after her passing and how the world is also honoring her lasting legacy. this is "today in the bay." we're streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. >> good friday morning to you. 5:00 right now. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm kris sanchez. we have a busy friday morning for you. first we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall. lower numbers, but maybe not lower heat. >> lower heat for some spots. only near the immediate coastline. they've been having some hot temperatures, too. but a lot of our inland valleys are still going to be heating up today. we're in the low 70s in dublin. compare that to the 55 in santa rosa. and it is 60 degrees in san

mateo. as you're heading out in the tri-valley, a live look at dublin where it's already a warm start to the day. low 70s with a light wind. as we go into the next few hours, it may cool down a couple more degrees but then start to heat up once again with temperatures at 82 degrees at 10:00. then at 90 degrees at lunchtime. already too hot to sit outside and enjoy lunch. looking at our temperatures and what we can expect today and how that compares to the daily record high temperature, santa rosa is headed for 100 degrees. we'll see that staying under the record high of 102. for san francisco, we're looking at highs in the mid 70s today. definitely an improvement over the high heat we've had recently. oakland reaching 85. that should stay below the record as well. as well as livermore, even though it's reaching 105 today, the record is 109. in san jose, headed for 94 degrees. we will see the temperatures coming down, but humidity going up for the weekend. we'll talk more about that

coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. happening now, firefighters have their hands full with an out-of-control wildfire still burning near lake tahoe. they're calling it the mosquito fire. it's burning in el dorado and placer county. it's burned nearly 14,000 acres. this morning there is still zero percent containment. several neighborhoods are under evacuation orders and residents say the conditions really couldn't be any worse. >> sad. you know, cry, panic, just in shock. you go like a robot. >> we don't know what will happen, if our trailer burns down, where will we live? it's very scary. >> the dry, extreme heat and difficult terrain are complicating things for firefighters. bay area crews are also helping along the front lines. santa rosa firefighters here, they joined forces with cal fire

murdered on the street in front of neighbors. >> "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live there this morning. the community was in shock. they are continuing to look for the weapon though they believe they have the suspect. >> that's right. good morning. you hear the story and it's hard not to be in shock with what happened. that weapon is still being searched for. it's whereabouts still unknown. it's hard to imagine what happened less than 24 hours ago on this street at that apartment building where a woman is said to be beheaded in front of her home in broad daylight. that woman is said to have two children, a 7-year-old and a 1-year-old, and this morning both of those children are without their mother. everything unfolded yesterday before noon on this typically quiet residential street. much as it is right now. it happened right after a fight broke out between the suspect and the victim inside one of the

apartment units behind us. authorities with knowledge of the investigation say the woman was beheaded during the day and in plain view. nbc bay area spoke to neighbors who both knew the victim and the suspect. one of those neighbors say they moved into the neighborhood about three years ago and seemed like they loved each other. police tell a different story. they say there's a history of domestic violence calls and other complaints tied to the home. they also say the victim had a restraining order against the suspect. that suspect has been identified as jose landaeta solano. he has been arrested for sex crimes and property crimes and is also said to have a history of mental illness. >> when our deputies responded to the scene and processed the scene, it's my understanding he was contacted in the surrounding area. he was not at the immediate scene. >> after his arrest, solano was

said to be taken to the hospital and investigators still searching for that weapon, which some describe as a samurai sword. as of yesterday, investigators were trying to secure the proper warrants for the victim's residence and the suspect's residence. we'll continue to monitor the story as it unfolds throughout the day. >> can't help but think about those two children. thank you very much. >> of course. moving you forward, a new covid booster shot. today contra costa county starts its distributiondistribution. the fda recently gave emergency use authorization. it's supposed to better protect against the original strain and the newer omicron variants. shots will be available at certain county sites starting at 8:00 a.m. vaccinated people 12 and up are eligible for the pfizer booster. those over 18 can get moderna's. taking a live look at downtown san jose this morning. what you can't see is that the

temperature is maybe just a few degrees lower. still not comfortable enough to sleep. we need some sleep. >> i know. i'm hoping in the next few days we'll have that opportunity. at least for us the heat does continue for today. some of the heat advisories, the excessive heat warnings have shifted into the central valley and for the bay area they have dropped for most of us, except pore solano county. this continues through this evening with more of the hotter temperatures over the central valley. we do need to plan our day around the temperatures with a look at cupertino starting out with upper 60s. it is cooler in some spots. look at the trend. by 10:00, upper 70s. upper 80s by noon. as we head for our high temperatures once again to reach up to 100 degrees in napa and santa rosa. well see a high of 105. in concord, livermore, usually

we would say it's extreme heat, but after the week we've had, this is some relief compared to what we've seen the past week or so. we'll see those temperatures continue to drop. this weekend the humidity comes up. i'll be talking more about the impacts of that in just a few minutes. mike, heading off for work this morning, where are the lower gas prices? >> we'll start in san jose, top of the screen. a safeway at $4.59. that's the best price down here in the south bay. in san leandro, superior gas at 4.75. in the north day, the gas n shop is at 4.67 a gallon. out on the roadways, mostly light. i'm tracking two alerts. the first one, a lot of slowing southbound 280, multiple lanes blocked by a crash here around hickey boulevard.

we're heading over towards the east bay with pleasant hills starting out at 66 degrees. we'll see another warm day with the trend heading straight up as we go towards late morning into the afternoon. but we are looking at some relief in the distant forecast. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. in san jose, getting a live look at 280 flowing smoothly. traffic is very light right now. 280 on the peninsula, getting out of daly city, an alert blocking a number of lanes. good deal of slowing after a serious crash. we'll talk about what's going on and what's the cause coming up. good morning. markets turned back to the positive thursday. do watch shares of san jose's zscale. they should pop today after the company told investors they expected to make far more money than first thought. fed chairman jay powell spoke at the kato institute virtually and he said all the things he said in the past and inflation are

still a threat. this is the last time we'll hear from him before the federal open markets committee meets to raise rates later this month. we'll get key inflation data on tuesday as well. general motors announced a new electric chevy equinox. it won't break the bank. the company hopes to sell it for $30,000. here's an early look. as you know, california has set a date past which all new cars must be electric. gm was already planning to build all-electric any way. so, too, is volvo. that $30,000 price tag, by the way, does not include the tax incentives. most electric cars for much more. the lucid does, $87,000. business insiders counted it up and said six major executives left lucid recently. they could not determine why. one of the founders of pandora, will grazer, takes us back to when the company couldn't make payroll.

it continues to weaken right off of the coast of southern california. that's going to spread some rain closer to the bay area by the end of the weekend. they're definitely expecting a lot of heavier rain further to our south. by the time it gets here, a lot of that rain dries up, but we could also see the potential of dry lightning and a lot of humidity. we're not expecting a lot of sunshine tomorrow. it will be mostly cloudy, humid. temperatures in the low 90s. continuing to cool off once all of that humid air moves out of here. we'll see our weather improving early next week. mike, you still tracking those two alerts? >> we have an easy drive getting to the bay bridge. but this crash here, south 680 at livorna into alamo. two lanes were blocked, now just one. not a lot of slowing and no major injuries. that is an alert that was called earlier this morning. the other one is on the peninsula. this has quite a bit of backup.

all right. nfl legend peyton manning and his brother cooper return for season two of the capital one college bowl. it is a quiz show pitting teams from universities across the country for scholarship money. last year things looked different due to covid, this year the show is adding an in-person audience including college mascots. students from 16 universities will battle for $1 million in scholarship money. as cooper manning explains, these students are not playing around. >> i've learned i'm not nearly as smart as i thought i was. i have the questions and answers in front of me, and i thought these students were so competitive yet very compassionate. >> here's the cool part.

when we look at today, still hitting the triple digits. we'll see some of those near-record high temperatures moving in once again. 100 degrees in santa rosa. the record is 102. we should stay below a record there as well as elsewhere across the bay area. when you consider 105 degrees. that's still very hot out there. heading to the south bay, at least we're seeing some relief for the inner bay. san jose reaching 94. still 102 in morgan hill. 105 for concord and livermore. and in antioch today, martinez heading up for 99 degrees. oakland in the mid 80s. mid 80s for san mateo. daly city and half moon bay, upper 60s there. 60s in san francisco. 77 in the mission district. our north bay temperatures, reaching into the upper 60s in bodega bay. ukiah reaching 108 degrees. a short drive will make a huge difference in the kind of

weather you will feel. let's turn to bob redell who is tracking another round of flex alerts. good morning. good morning. this is the tenth straight day of flex alerts. cal iso issued this flex alert for today from between 3:00 this afternoon until 10:00 tonight. that means that during that time, when you're at home, you want to turn off all unnecessary lights, avoid using major appliances and try not to turn that thermostat below 78 degrees. we as a community have been conserving enough to avoid rolling blackouts, but there's been several unplanned outages because of equipment failure in the intense heat. in san jose alone, nearly 100,000 pg&e customers including three hospitals lost power this week. san jose mayor sam liccardo blames pg&e for the infrastructure failures and

points out there were a number of blown transformers in 2020 and the problem was never fixed from then. liccardo says if pg&e does not present a plan to immediately repair and replace products this time, they will seek an injunction to force them to do so. >> we cannot continue to have a grid that's not reliable enough to protect the basic health and safety of san jose residents. >> this is historic. it is unacceptable. we all rely on power. it is absolutely essential to our quality of life. >> pg&e says it has already replaced 700 transformers across the city of san jose in the last couple of years. it says it, too, is frustrated with the outages. also with this hot weather, we know there's the threat of dry lightning. that threat continues into this weekend. if you live in a vulnerable area, make sure you have that feet of defensible space around your property in case there's a

persevere through a century of challenges and controversies. pleasanton is buzzing but not in a good way. downtown area is being overrun by flies. so many that people are starting to avoid some local businesses. people yesterday were swatting the flies away. some downtown workers say diners are choosing to eat inside hoping to avoid those unwanted guests. businesses are going to great lengths to chase the insects away. one restaurant is even bleaching the sidewalk to deter the pest. workers at a coffee shop bought some fly catching devices and a fly eating plant to hope it will help. the city is working to find the source of the flies. taking a live look at san francisco. you might be able to feel a little bit of relief, a little bit. tiny bit. >> along the coastline for today and the weekend. and we also have the art and wine festival happening in

ohio today where he will break ground on a new chip plant. >> scott mcgrew, the president is showing off what the multibillion chips bill can do. >> it was going to help american companies build chips in america and foreign companies build chip plants in america. the president signed the bill into law last month. intel was planning a factory before the chips bill, but the hope is more will be coming. the plant will add 3,000 company jobs and 7,000 construction jobs. the national science foundation said thursday it would offer $10 million to train and build a skilled work force. manufacturing jobs are a bipartisan topic. this morning we're learning of a new political investigation

into the political action committee that raises money to say what it is fraud in the last election. the "new york times," the "washington post" reports a federal grand jury is seeking more information about the saving america pac. the contents of the subpoena were described to reporters at the "new york times." we don't know what's in the investigation. we do know the house is investigating where all the money from those fund-raising appeals sent to trump supporters from save america, where that money went. the justice department has asked a florida federal judge to reconsider her order stopping them from examining those government documents seized at trump's mar-a-lago home. the judge says the special master has to go through them first. it is essentially unheard of for a judge to stop a criminal investigation even temporarily. now, this ask from the doj puts the judge, aileen cannon, in a bit of a pickle. she's brand-new to being a judge. she's been criticized by top

this is the last day of seeing triple-digit temperatures widespread across parts of the north bay, inland east bay and down to the south county. we're still in for one more hot day with san jose dropping into the mid 90s compared to the highs over 100 degrees we've seen recently. so this is going to be the source of what brings in the humidity that i've been talking about as well as the chance for storms. this is tropical storm kay. it was a category 2 hurricane. now as it interacts with baja, california and the peninsula, it has continued to weaken. also bumping up against some colder water as it moves closer to the california coastline. so that's going to continue to weaken the storm. the moisture will spread out across the region. we'll see more clouds moving in late tonight throughout the day tomorrow. and when we get high humidity and warm temperatures, sometimes that triggers some isolated thunderstorms. if the rain continues to dry up, there could be dry lightning in the forecast which could spark

new wildfires. more concerns for the weekend as our temperatures continue to go down. we're going from 105 today to the upper 80s. with the heat index, it doesn't feel much better. we do get some relief in the forecast for the middle of next week. in san francisco, we're coming out of those 80s to 70s, and then upper 60s for next week. mike, we've been watching a traffic alert. what's the update? >> we got word on twitter, north county fire is on the scene. there's not an active fire as far as i know, but the related activity after the crash and the wrong-way driver crash there around hickey may leave another hour for activity there. there will be a slower drive and traffic will build out of daly city heading southbound. 101 is okay. we should see metering lights
