and hi, everybody. good morning, welcome to "today" from london. so glad to have you with us on a saturday morning, what an honor to be with you peter and kristen on what has already been a remarkable day in london. >> watching from a distance, it already is a historic day. king charles iii officially proclaimed king. >> it was remarkable to watch, an ancient ritual brought into the modern era for all to see. the king taking the oath in front of members of the accession council and his wife camilla and son william. >> the king has a busy day ahead. he'll be holding several audiences in a few hours with a new prime minister, liz trust, the cabinet and the dean of west minister. >> so a lot on his plate already. we want to turn to keir simmons here with me in london with more on today's history in the making

that we were all able to witness. it was pretty incredible. >> that's right, savannah what you and i have been watching this morning is the weaving together of the british constitution, royalty, religion, military and most important perhaps the people out on the streets of london behind me there. and never before have people been taken inside the walls of st. james' palace, to see the ceremony, a king ascending to the throne. tradition and change. what we've been watching is history happening, savannah. this morning, an ancient ceremony, the official proclamation, king charles fulfilling his destiny. and ushering in change. this is called the accession council and this is the first time it's been televised. alongside charles, camilla and william. >> i shall strive to follow the inspiring example i have been

monarch walked into buckingham palace and recorded his first message to the nation. >> i shall endeavor to serve you with loyalty, respect, and love as i have throughout my life. >> if these words sound familiar, they mirror vows his mother made. >> i can give you my heart and the devotion to these old islands and all the people of our nations. >> king charles with an emotional message to her. >> to my darling mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late papa, i want simply to say this, thank you. >> then more signs of change. camilla, now the queen consult. and william the prince of wales, and kate the princess of wales, a title not held since diana.

>> with katherine beside him, our new prince and princess of wales will, i know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations. >> and a brief mention of son harry and daughter-in-law meghan. >> i want to express my love for harry and meghan, as they continue to build their lives overseas. >> a moment the queen would have wanted. always striving to unite her family, as well as her country. a quick word about the thousands of people behind us in the streets of london, these are scenes that london has seen for more than 500 year, another queen elizabeth, not queen elizabeth ii, queen elizabeth i famously rode through these streets to see her people, even taking her flowers. why is that? because kings and queens of the past have always known they needed the consent of the

people. and that's what's most important for king charles right now to ensure he has the public support. >> we are really witnessing these ancient rituals, now with the modern incarnation,, but the substance so important. back to you guys. >> the outpouring of emotion we've seen behind you, is overwhelming. the large crowds. i've been moved by moms and daughters coming out in tribute to the late queen. what have you been seeing there, hearing from the british people over the course of the last few days at buckingham palace? >> peter and kristen, it's so touching. it's moms, daughters, grown men fully dressed up in the flag with tears in their eyes. it's overwhelming love, affection, and gratitude for this queen. the signs and the notes, what people are writing is so touching. i saw this morning it moved me to tears with the old scripture,

matthew 25, well done my good and faithful servant. and the crowd energy is so interesting. i shot this on my iphone, people are laying flowers, it's packed, shoulder to shoulder, but it's quiet. there's not jostling, it's not loud. and, in fact, there was a spirit of cooperation when this young man hoists himself at the top of the gates and people are handing him more and more bouquet, he's hanging on by one arm but throwing more flowers up there. the feeling is one of gratitude and love. >> one of so many incredible images, savannah there. i can't stop thinking about the fact that queen elizabeth, savannah was 25 years old, when she became the monarch. now you have king charles, who's 73. this is a moment he has quite literally been preparing for his entire life yet he even talked

about the heavy responsibility. talk about the weight that he now carries, savannah. >> he clearly feels it. it's astonishing, first her 70 year reign and he's the oldest monarch to take the throne, he's 73 years old and he's been waiting all his life. in contrast to queen elizabeth who was born not expecting to be heir to the throne only when her uncle abdicated did this responsibility fall to her. so you could prepare your whole life for this and when it happens, feel the obligation, the duty. and the pomp and circumstance we're seeing around him would certainly bring the responsibility home. it's for him, the family, and it's for the public to get used to this new era, a dawn of a new era. and in the early moments king charles is trying to sound the grace notes and walk the balance

of sovereignty and approachability and we saw that this morning with the statement he made after the royal proclamation at the palace and last night in the broadcast where he spoke so warmly, movingly and personally for his mother. so it's two things, grief for the monarch who reigned for seven decades. many may not have been alive or known another queen and now the new era here. >> i love the sovereign deck declarations of late happy memories. >> it is the dawn of a new era and the queen's body will be moved from balmoral to edinburg in the coming days. the queen passed away at her

beloved scottish estate. >> reporter: that's true. good morning from edinburg. we are expecting in the coming tomorrow for the hearse to leave balmoral castle and come behind me over these buildings, the royal mile from edinburg castle. on the ground, the security preps are up, there are gates, police, barricades going up. because they're expecting thousands of people to line the streets once the hearse leaves balmoral. that residence, many say was her favorite place of palaces and castles because she had such good memories there, a place to connect with the outdoors, her family. she would go with her horses and dogs. and former prime minister tony

blair has been sharing an amazing story, when you were a guest at balmoral, the royal family would serve you, there were no servants. prince philip would barbecue and queen elizabeth would serve you on your plate and they would clean up, not want you to do anything. i think it's those great memories why she loved that residence so much and wanted to spend her final days there. she spent her last duties as we mentioned, from balmoral we expect the hearse -- this hasn't been confirmed but we think it happens -- it leaves the coast of scotland and down to edinburg and then later to st. giles cathedral behind me the first place the public gets to see the coffin. >> thank you so much tom. we want to go back to savannah at buckingham palace who has more on the history and

the pomp and pageantry of the day. >> thank you. i'm joined by wilfred frost, an nbc news contributor, we've been witnessed this extraordinary ceremony, when you think about it going back to the 1700s and now televised for the world to see, brought into this moment. and it's important because the buy in of the public and the public adjusting to this new era is a key part of setting king charles up for success, is it not? >> absolutely. and, you know, steps like this are all part of that process. he has an impossible act to follow, impossible shoes to feel. and clearly, her majesty, queen elizabeth ii left the throne in a stronger position than she found it. i think for king charles it's trying to maintain that and do your best to do that. and essentially a sense of don't screw it up. his reign will be defined by the years ahead not so much these days. even though we just watched this

proclamation of the new king. i feel these ten days are actually more about looking backwards. they're more about her and a chance to remember her and mourn her. and that further cements in my mind that these ten days for him are about keeping it simple, don't make mistakes, definitely got to do the ceremonies and get it right but not trying to steal the thunder, in fact. >> the address last night broadcast was predominantly about his mother, anno imagine to her service and duty that she did for seven decades. those are hard shoes to fill. do you believe he'll change the monarchy here? there's talk of a slimmed down monarchy. >> i think so. it's something that she had begun. i think it's a misrepresentation with something he's going to start. sometimes particularly in the u.s. it's tra framed as if he

has a vendetta against members of his family, i don't think that's the case. i think the people look forward to a more streamlined royal family, fewer public titles, fewer people getting public money. that's driving any changes he does make in the modern age, a monarch has to be wanted by the people. >> it's a delicate balance the royals are asked to strike and asked is not the right word, they're born to do it. as he said in his statement, his mother fulfilled a -- it was a promise kept, a promise of destiny kept and he said she intended to keep it as well. thank you, i know you'll be with us as we continue on. but send it back to peter and kristen in washington. >> at 73 king charles is the oldest person ever to take the british throne and facing a public that's not always been so warm to him in the past. molly hunter has more on that

from london. molly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. he's been waiting to be heir longer than any other sovereign to be crowned king. he's been waiting for decades. but as we saw this morning he is making decisions already to do it slightly his own way. >> god save the king. >> god save the king. >> reporter: this morning king charles is the new, younger slightly more modern face of the british monarchy, which for many brits will take getting used to. >> everything is uncertain right now. >> it's unusual. you can tell there's something in the atmosphere that's happened. >> reporter: at 73, he's the oldest person ever to be named the sovereign and has been in training for decades. >> i hope and trust that in time i shall be able to offer my own contribution. >> what would you like to see from him? >> i hope they'll try and modernize the royalty.

>> and part of modernizing is slimming down. the taxpayer tolerance is waning. >> do you think it should continue the way it's going? >> not the way it's going. >> reporter: and bringing prince william into the fold as soon as possible may endear him. >> hopefully he can streamline the royal family, it's too large. >> be more inclusive, diverse, reach out to people, especially in this time of need. >> reporter: it's a moment of intense change, a new prime minister just day into her job, the uk headed into a cold winter, an energy crisis looming. the country is feeling anxious and nervous. and while queen elizabeth was widely beloved and accepted her eldest son has never enjoyed that popularity.

house with that coverage. the president has had high praise for the queen, like so many other leaders around the world. >> absolutely. good morning to you. although the white house hasn't shared formal travel plans, the president confirmed he will make the journey across the pond for the queen's state funeral. joining a long list of europe's royal families who also plan to attend. >> i don't know what the details are yet, but i will be going. i know him, i haven't spoken to him, i did not call him yet. >> a senior administration official tells me the president will offer his personal condolences to the new king at the appropriate time. preliminary plans are under way for who may join him as part of an official delegation that could travel to the funeral but no plans have been made as the white house awaits an invitation from the palace. now president biden was the last

of 13 sitting american presidents to meet the queen, most recently last summer when he reflected that the monarch's generosity reminded him of his own mother and the president ordered flags to half staff following the queen's passing as a mark of respect until the day of her internment. today, vice president harris visited the british embassy to offer sympathies and sign the queen's book of condolences, writing she led with strength, wisdom and grace. >> monica, thank you very much. some other news this morning, ukraine said its military has recaptured large areas of the country's east after sources surged forward in a surprise counter offensive friday. officials shared video appearing to show ukrainian soldiers in once russian occupied towns. president zelenskyy said troops have reclaimed more than 30

area say they hope firefighters can keep their stamina as they protect homes from turning to ash. >> our hearts are totally with the residents here. we, ourselves, want to make sure we are tracking the news and have an escape plan in case it comes to that. >> air quality is now a big concern. early in the day yesterday, the skies were orange on the eastern shore of lake tahoe. in southern california, firefighters in riverside county are getting some much-needed help by the rain. the rain has slowed the spread of the deadly fairview fire, burning near hemet. containment jumped from 5% to 40%. two people trapped in a car were killed when the fire first started monday. the fire has burned 28,000 acres so far. 13 structures have been destroyed. we'll check in with meteorologist vianey arana now. >> one thing about the fires is all of the smoke, which the air quality concerns and air quality adviser will be in place today which is different from the

♪♪ we are back now on this saturday morning, september 10, 2022 with a live look at buckingham palace. the crowds have been growing since the news of thursday of queen elizabeth's death. and savannah guthrie is there covering all of it. and savannah king charles now at buckingham palace. talk about what is the mood there with the throngs of people gathered outside? >> we felt a little buzz in the

crowd as the royal motorcade made its way back to buckingham palace and now the royal standard is flying. a sign that the king is in residence. it's the only flag you'll see not at half mast. it's a new era. but there's a feeling not of sorrow. it's mourning, it's grief, but it's really more adulation and affection for a long-life lived. >> thank you so much. more about the queen and her life. king charles on friday mentioned his son harry and his wife meghan. a first sign many say may help bring the brothers and their father close together once again. gadi schwartz is in los angeles this morning with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. watching so many of those clips of the royal family and the queen, it seems like just yesterday that prince harry and prince william were inseparable. and in the grief and mourning, some are holding out hope for

reconciliation for a prince that decided to step away from royalty. from a king's somber speech. >> i want also to express my love for harry and meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas. >> reporter: a moment of royal affection from a father to his son harry. >> when king charles mentioned harry and meghan in his speech, it was monumental. it was a big olive branch. >> reporter: for so much of their lives, prince harry, prince william, and their father charles lived side by side. while there was warmth in the picture of the fairy tale weddings, the brothers grew apart and a rift was growing between prince harry and his family. the british tabloids attacking prince harry's wife, meghan markle, the couple stepping away

and moving to california. then opening up to oprah winfrey with shocking allegations about royal conversations about their son's skin tone. >> that conversation i'm never going to share. at that time it was awkward, i was shocked. >> reporter: queen elizabeth maintaining a warm relationship with her grandson until the end. on thursday, harry rushing to balmoral, without megan, arriving an hour after the announcement of his grandmother's passing. >> they're going to be spending time together with the events going forward and that could open up the opportunity to have heart to heart conversations. >> reporter: as the line of recession comes forward, prince harry is fifth in line to the throne while his children become prince and princess, titles they hope could bring the family back into the fold. >> reporter: prince harry and meghan were already in europe

for an event but neither went to balmoral castle when the immediate family gathered. now the question is whether harry and meghan will attend the funeral with their children in the united states still. there is a chance that meghan could return to care for them and possibly stay in the united states or return with them to be there as the queen is laid to rest. if she does, it'll be the first time most of the royal family meets lillibet, who is now 1 years old. >> sadly the passing of prince philip couldn't bring the family back together perhaps the passing of the queen will. we want to get back to savannah guthrie outside of the palace. >> reporter: we have daisy mcandrew with us. there's always that hope everyone is rooting, particularly for these brothers who had to lean on each other in grief as young boys to somehow mend fences. is there any sign of that, hope

of that in the near term? >> savannah to answer your question, there is no sign of it but there is a lot of hope. i can tell you on on behalf of everybody in this country they're all willing the brothers to put their differences aside and come together. to answer the questions in the film, i think it's unthinkable that meghan wouldn't be at the state funeral of the queen next week, i'm certain she will be. but the question is whether the children will be there, whether lillibet and archie, who as we now know hold the titles prince and princesses, the famous interview they did with oprah winfrey seemed to be suggesting they would never hold the title prince and princess. now i think we know they will be. >> adding to the tensions is the news that harry is expected to write a memoir, whether it's a

tell all or dishes on the royal family it's certainly a point of tension. there's also a rift with king charles and it seems quite striking he reached out that olive branch in his first statement to the nation saying he expressed his love to harry and meghan. that was significant, was it not? >> yes, it was very significant. i think it took some people by surprise, pleasantly by surprise, i should say. there have been other olive branchs as well. we know there were open invitations from the now king to come and stay with them. that wasn't taken up. there is concern about the memoir, there was a hope that charles and william will get an advance copy to see what harry will be saying about them in the memoir, we've heard that will not be happening so everyone is waiting to see what will be said

i'm kira klapper. increased cash reward. the search continues for the body of alexis gabe. in january, the 24-year-old disappeared from oakley. police believe her ex-boyfriend killed her. her family increased the reward from $50,000 to $100,000. they hope this will encourage people to come forward. in a facebook post, her father encouraged search groups to join the search. they want to find her remains and give her a proper memorial service. the ex-boyfriend was shot and killed in may by police in washington state as they were trying to arrest him for her murder. in southern california, firefighters in riverside county are getting some much-needed help from the rain. the rain has slowed the spread of the deadly fairview fire. containment jumped from 5% to 40%. two people trapped in a car were killed when the fire first ignited monday. the fire has burned 28,000 acres so far.
