hello. thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. >> there's a lot going on. we are tracking several big stories for you. thousands of homes are threatened. the crews are making progress. we will have an update on containment in a few moments. that fire is a sending smoke and haze into the area. the meteorologist is keeping an eye on the air quality as we head into the work week. also tonight, marking 21 years since the tragedy that changed our nation forever.

how the bay area pays tribute to the lives lost on 9/11. a tragic story in the east bay. a second subject is behind bars , accused of abuse and murder of eight-year-old sophia mason. today the state attorney general shared more details about his arrest and how he was able to stay on the run for so many months. the family is also taking legal action against alameda county after they say caseworkers failed to help sophia. here is sergio cantata. >> reporter: this collection and videos of sophia mason through the years was assured by her family. they are reminders of a child that had happy moments. dante jackson is now under arrest, facing child abuse and murder charges. at a news conference investigators shared details of a gruesome scene when they found her at a home in merced in march. she had been dead for months. >> the coroner determined that the death was a homicide. he noted that sophie's body was malnourished.

in my 20 years in law enforcement this case is the most disturbing and horrific i have seen. >> she was so decomposed at the time they found her that even after the coroner did their exam in forensic pathology all that we received back or some bones. >> reporter: sophia's cousin says jackson's arrest gives the family some closure. but they still want answers of how eight-year-old sophia died. information they believe only jackson can provide. now they are demanding answers from alameda county channeling and family services about why the child was allowed to remain with her mother thomas samantha johnson. she and her boyfriend, jackson, or both facing murder charges. johnson was charged in march and remains in custody. >> reporter: they say county caseworkers failed to respond to concerns from family members, teachers, hospital staff, and even the child herself.

the family attorney our combing through 450 documents they just received from alameda county. so far attorney carly sanchez tells me she has discovered eight separate referrals over sophia's lifetime of possible abuse. sanchez says only three were ever investigated. harris says her family was distraught when they were reported abuse but it didn't seem to get an adequate response from caseworkers. >> it was unfounded. all of the complaints. even sophia's complaints were unfounded. now that she's dead i hope that they can see that every single complaint was founded. >> reporter: we've reached out to the alameda council and alameda county administrator about the family's legal claim, which was filed on thursday. nbc bay area news has repeatedly had comments from children and family services about this case over the last several months. so far we have received no response. the county has 45 days to reply to the family's legal plan before they continue with a

formal lawsuit. nbc bay area news. >> we have been following this tragic story closely from the start. if you have not already, download the free nbc bay area app with breaking news and leather alerts straight to your phone. we are tracking air quality. smoke from the fire near lake tahoe is drifting into the bay area. there are changes today that can push that unhealthy haze out of our region. >> good news for the bay area and for lake tahoe. the air-quality advisory due to the smoke, low to moderate levels around the bay area. that's ongoing. as you can see here on the map, we have areas of red and purple up toward lake tahoe. the last two days places like truck he had seen unhealthy levels of hazardous air. we have seen numbers as high as 300 to 400 at times around the tahoe bay and truck he. as those onshore winds pick up notice how the bay area will

see clearing skies here, pulling temperatures too. and i do think lake tahoe, as the wind picks up in the west slope of sierra, more of that smoke is pushed off to the east. we will have to watch how the mosquito fire reacts to that boost in wins. better air quality likely from the bay area up toward the sierra. cooling changes ahead for the work week and then more wind showing up in the seven-day forecast. that could be a sign of an offshore wind and dry conditions as we head toward next weekend. a closer look at the change in the seven-day forecast coming up in about 12 minutes. >> rob, thank you very much. there's a lot of smoke coming from the mosquito fire. it has burned more than 46,000 acres since it started on tuesday. containment is up to 10%. the other counties have flames threatening more than 5000 homes and 11,000 people are evacuated. is a somber day in american history. today marks 21 years since terrorists hijacked three planes , crashing them into new york,

the pentagon, and a field in pennsylvania. the san francisco fire department held its annual remembrance of the first responders and civilians killed on 9/11. 343 firefighters died while trying to get people to safety. a high school student asked him , this past week, why the names of those firefighters are read every single year. >> i said, if we forget our past and then we don't learn from our past and honor our past. we are not going to have a good future. and that student, that young public servant passengers stormed the

cockpit and the plane crashed into a field in pennsylvania. among those on board, two men. people came together to pay their respects to them and all of those lives lost that day. >> reporter: 200 people came together to reflect on the deadliest terror attack on u.s. soil in history. >> it's something that we never want to forget. having the memorial every year is a good thing. it's something that gives credibility to the folks were involved. >> reporter: the community also honored mark bingham and todd beamer. hailed as heroes on united airlines flight 93. they rushed the cockpit and altered the planes course away from the white house and capital building.

>> on 9/11 todd and mark were two of the four passengers aboard united flight 93 who attempted to take back control of the cockpit from the al qaeda terrorists. >> reporter: to remember all who lost their lives 21 years ago a new 9/11 memorial is unveiled. >> we were all in the same page of september of 2001. >> reporter: mark linguist, a u.s. air force veteran that responded to the attacks as a red cross volunteer, says, there are important lessons to remember. >> 911 and the next day. that may be the best and most pure the citizens have ever been. all of the garbage fell away. all that matters is that we were american and we cared for our fellow american. >> reporter: he urged people to keep that spirit alive by answering the call to volunteer by those who are in need. nbc bay area news.

in new york city a moment of silence was observed to commemorate the exact moment the first plane struck the north tower. american flight 11 hit at 6:46 a.m. . also at ground zero today, the somber tradition of reading the names of all of those victims. vice president kamala harris was there for that ceremony. new tonight. three people were shot, two badly hurt during a shootout between thieves and a marijuana grower. it happened this morning on adams avenue not too far from the oakland airport. the nbc bay area's tom jensen has more on what happened and the hunt for several suspects still underway. >> reporter: this is unusual but not unheard of. in fact there was another gun shoot out right outside another grow operation here, just around the corner on doolittle, about five or six years ago. but this one ended early this morning outside of this warehouse, where there was a shootout in a large marijuana grow.

several officers have been on the scene all day to respond to a burglary in progress call at this warehouse on the 2000 block of adams avenue at about 4:20 this morning. >> we are sifting through the shell casings and evidence on the scene to see how many suspects there were. >> reporter: criminal investigation division commander , matthew, says, when officers arrived they learned that there was a shootout between a security guard and one of the suspects. we don't know if that suspect was inside this suv, towed from the scene this afternoon. but he was hit once and is hospitalized in critical condition. a man who is managing the cannabis grow was also shot several times and is also hospitalized in critical condition. and the guard will exchange gunfire outside. he is in stable condition after being shot once. three more suspects raced away from the warehouse in a rented u-haul truck, loaded with an undisclosed number of pot plants. >> as the suspects were trying to leave they did have processed, manicured marijuana with them. but they did make it to the

getaway car. >> reporter: police chase this u-haul until they were 10 miles away. two hispanic males jumped into a silver jeep and another chase with police ensued. but they got away. another officer was able to chase down a third man before he got into the getaway car at 31st and mlk. one lingering question, whether the indoor grow operation itself was legal. >> i can tell you i have not come across a legal marijuana grow since i started. >> reporter: city staff will determine whether the grow was permitted. according to the certain zoning laws, commercial cultivation of cannabis is prohibited. tom jensen, nbc bay area news. a station on the peninsula's back open tonight after a body was found on the platform there. police say the body was found at about 1:30 this afternoon. no foul play is suspect did.

it was closed for several hours while police investigated. they reopened just before 3:00 p.m. officers are recovering tonight after they were hit by a suspected dui driver during a traffic stop. it happened around 2:00 this morning in fairfield. the officers pulled over a car on i-80. they were on the shoulder when an suv hit the cruiser, which then hit the officers. one officer has a broken leg. the other has a concussion. the driver, who was originally pulled over, is fine. the driver of the suv was addressed for dui. elections are around the corner. just other two months away. chuck todd spoke with -- about election deniers and the plans for 2024. >> what should we expect? >> the election? listen, the president has been very clear that he intends to

run again. and if he does i will be running with him probably. >> you can watch meet the press with chuck todd every morning at 8:00. turning to the war in ukraine. the ukraine forces have punched through russian defenses in the country's east, forcing russian troops to retreat. this video shows you ukrainian troops taking down a russian banner in a recaptured town. ukraine forces also released these photos, reportedly showing armored vehicles abandoned by russian troops as they retreated. ukraine claims to have regained control of more than 1100 square miles since the beginning of september. they are withdrawing from two areas. joining me now is michael. director of the institute for

international studies at stanford university. and a diplomat who served as a u.s. ambassador to russia from 2012 to 2014. >> to know exactly what's going on in the fog of war. remember that the government of ukraine doesn't want us to know exactly what's going on. they have asked reporters not to talk about liberated territory in detail because some worry they might be attacked.

several of the major cities in this region, have now been liberated. they were taken months ago by the russians and are now under h ukrainian control. in the south, we are also seeing a more limited counteroffensive but they are also liberating small villages there. so this is the first major counteroffensive we've seen for several months in this war. >> we have put a map on the screen a moment ago. we can put it back up again. there are circles of red weather have been extensive fighting in the last few days. we also see some activity over towards the next, there seems to be a relatively large, whatever the specifics might be but, a large counteroffensive. >> correct, remember, think

about how long all those borders are. this is a war being fought over a large set of borders. from the very north all the way down near odessa as you just showed with the map. the main action right now is around the city of carr kyiv, where as i said before, many cities were seized early on in the campaign, and even this city, we were worried in february and march that the russian forces might take that city which is the second largest city in ukraine. right now they are moving back to taking major cities in the region, and the russians are fleeing. i think that's what's also important to understand, they

are not trained to hold their positions, they are literally fleeing and leaving behind a lot of equipment. it's probably the biggest victory that ukraine has had the battle of keys several months ago. >> as you look forward, over the next two or three weeks as best you can what do you see evolving over there in this conflict? >> number one, i want to see if they can liberate all of this region. this is the capital in the region is, if they can liberate the state it would be a major achievement. i'm worried about a russian counteroffensive. when you push into previously held russian territory that's dangerous. but i'm also watching what's going on in the south. before the campaigns started, the conventional wisdom was that it would be the main

welcome back to this special edition of nbc bay area news. queen elizabeth the second has completed the journey to edinboro. thousands of people lined the roads as the hearse drove by, the queens coffin will rest inside the ancient hall in london's westminster hall. the lying in state will happen from this wednesday through the following monday. the public will be able to walk past the coffin to pay request -- respects. today the white house announced biden accepted the invitation along with the first lady. the funeral is set for a week from tomorrow at westminster abbey. stay with us for continuing coverage as the uk mourns the queen's death. tomorrow on the today show we will be live as the queen's casket arrives. this week is a big one for

u.s. we sat down with kim and go behind the scenes on the story you will only see on nbc bay area. >> i visited her at the war memorial opera house. she's from south korea and speaks six languages. breaking barriers, she is humble. she told me she hasn't really thought much about being that person but she is grateful when she hears from audience members about how she is an inspiration. like we said at the opera centennial, our cameras were given this exclusive access to one of the first rehearsals. >> the centennial is coming up, anthony and cleopatra, can you talk to us about that? >> we are creating a very good storytelling opera so, i'm very excited.

for how it really will sound and how it will be performed on our stage. >> what you want the audience to take away from the performances? >> anything and everything, i know that a lot of people are worried about not being like, experts in classical music or opera but everyone in the audience can be creative. the live performance, it's not like we are performing and they are listening. we as performers get to deal the energy of the audience as well. we really feel the energy. there is this invisible energy and in every performance is different. of course because we are different. and your soul. so that's the transformative power of music. >> the art and wine festival made it back in person this year in time to celebrate its golden anniversary. the festival will officially turned 50 this year. after last year's anniversary was delayed because of covid. 50 years of not just art and wine but music, culture, performances and family fun. one of the artists that took part is thrilled that her art was chosen to be the logo of the 50th anniversary celebration. >> i knew that it would be on the shirts but i didn't know it would be on the pint glasses and wine glasses. so when i got here yesterday in the morning and saw it, it made me tear up, it was a cool

experience to see this piece and this street i've spent so much of my life on having my design. >> nicely done elaine. organizers went all out this year with a collaborative art party, and all kinds of stuff. >> what a nice day for it. >> we really lucked out this weekend, we had a very hot week and then things cooling off this weekend. a little tropical weather and humidity but things are about to trend cooler and the seven- day forecast as we get back to the week, right now it's kind of warm out there with tropical air moving over the bay area. 71 degrees in san jose with hazy skies, inland towards the tri-valley, 75, and over towards walnut creek 73 degrees and back into san francisco, mid-level clouds and also a bit of patchy fog right there near the golden gate bridge. notice the satellite and radar view, it continues to be an active night.

just getting bombarded by lightning strikes, heavy thunderstorms, flash flood warnings happening across southern california. here, sprinkles at times. as the high clouds pass by tomorrow morning, don't be surprised to see a little bit of drizzle or if you sprinkles at times. as you move to the afternoon we begin to see the clouds thin out. high temperatures tomorrow and once we start off the morning in the 60s we will slowly climb into the 70s and 80s as early as lunchtime. eventually san francisco through oakland, upper 60s to low 70s, the warmest places inland tomorrow, mid to upper 80s tomorrow. what a difference a week makes. there's no 100 degree temperatures in the forecast and this is why. notice the seabreeze, a lot more yellow and orange showing up with stronger ocean air conditioning that will take the temperatures down for the middle part of the week.

it may also bring some drizzle, tuesday morning we could see some of that, highs in the 70s and cooler wednesday. the tri-valley below average temperatures for a change. temperatures climb a little bit into thursday but here's the bottom line, no signs of any heat and that's good news for air-quality. a lot of that wildfire smoke should stay off to the east. one pattern chains we get to see this time of year, is an active jetstream bringing the storms just to the north of the bay area but missing us. if you showers maybe appear on the north coast, then high pressure builds in behind it, by next weekend we will have to watch closely because as those lows drop to the east, this is a pattern that can sometimes lead to some northwind potentially around the 20th so stay tuned. it won't have an impact on next weekend but we will see the temperatures climbing as the high starts to build back in
