the jfk library in boston to talk about his cancer moon shot. this is something that started during the obama administration when biden was vice president, now being relaunched with an ambitious goal, to cut the cancer death rate in half in 25 years. also, to improve the experiences of cancer patients and their families this is something that is deeply personal to president biden. he lost his own son beau to brain cancer in 2015 also part of this effort is a call to action for cancer screenings, so important to prevent death and cancer but some of that lull during the covid-19 pandemic. so they really want to kick that off again. guys >> looking forward to the words. drew, thank you. in what analysts say could be a turning point in the war, ukraine has recaptured swaths of territory in the northeast as russian forces pull back, liberated towns and cities are hoisting the ukrainian flag in

celebration. our meagan fitzgerald is in kyiv with the latest. >> reporter: frances and philip, good morning we are seeing the ukrainians making some significant advancements here. we haven't seen this since april when they were successful in pushing the russians out of the outer outskirts of kyiv. since then president zelenskyy is saying they've been able to recapture about 1100 square miles of territory that was once controlled by the russians when you take a look at the northeastern part of the country in the kharkiv area, the president is saying that they have been able to reclaim and liberate some 30 settlements and villages there this is the same area where we're seeing the russianress treat. now according to the russian defense ministry, they are not retreating they say they're redeploying their troops to the east of the country. but we're also seeing ukrainian soldiers making advancements in the south in the kherson religion this is the area we saw the russians capture early on in this invasion. meanwhile, all eyes are on the zaporizhzhia nuclear plant where

ukrainian energy officials shut down the sixth and only working reactor that i say they did this because they were able to restore power to this line that goes to the plant. but now the concern is that shelling could knock that offline, which means it would create the situation where the power plant is running on these backup diesel generators and we know there is only a limited supply of diesel late sunday evening, president zelenskyy tweeting areas like kharkiv and the donetsk region in the east and down into the south went dark, suffering power outages. zelenskyy says that the russians hit key and critical infrastructure guys, back to you. >> we appreciate the update, meagan thank you. let's turn now to the extreme weather. southern california was slammed by remnants of tropical storm kay. overnight in lake hughes north of los angeles, more than 20 cars were trapped by a mudslide. helicopters were dispatched to help rescue about 50 people there have been no reports of any injuries
