right now at 4:30, chaos at a bay area high school. a faculty member shot while trying to break up a fight. police look for the shooter. plus -- orth bay getting that big jolt. reaction is pouring in after a 4.4 quake strikes near santa rosa. the steps you can take to make sure you are prepared for the next one. and her final journey home. queen elizabeth ii is back in london this morning. thousands gathering now to say a final farewell.

this is "today in the bay" streaming live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv and online. and a good morning to you. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia has the day off. good morning to you, mike. good morning to you, kari. we want to start with the forecast that feels so fresh. >> we opened up the front door and the back door and let the breeze come through the house. it was so great yesterday and it's not going anywhere. >> nice. >> thank goodness! >> who is your favorite today? as we take a live look outside in san francisco starting out with the fog rolling over the city so more of that today as we heady. we're up to 75 degrees in san jose. 79 in gilroy. for the east bay some low 70s for walnut creek, and for oakland today 70 degrees. near the coast we're keeping it foggy in half moon bay. sunshine in palo alto. san francisco at times seeing the fog throughout the morning. our north bay highs reach into

the mid to upper 70s. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up. we have a major crash in the north bay. this is on city streets in sonoma. these are two major streets here just off highway 12. i wanted to shout it out because it is one of the things we're following in the newsroom. in the north bay all the freeways are moving freely. we'll track that one intersection in sonoma. an earlier crash looks like everything is cleared outside of the caldecott tunnel. an easy, light drive getting westbound. i've seen a period of time in the morning very tough to see the east shore freeway this is westbound out of berkeley and down to the bay bridge. you can see the low clouds hovering so fog may be a factor this morning for some. a pleasant feeling, a nice, easy drive so far. back to you. >> thanks, mike. scary moments for students and staff in the north bay. val high school. we have to warn you that some of the images may be disturbing.

a beloved coach hit by a bullet this is video that appears to show what happened before and then after. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd reports police needs your help to find the shooter. >> reporter: vallejo police want to know what sparked a shooting and they believe this video posted on vallejo crime and safety social media page may give them some key clues. >> what we've learned based upon the investigation is there was an altercation involving students in front of the school in the street. >> reporter: police chief shawny williams. >> a staff member came out to intervene in that to break up the fight. after he had broken up the fight or in the process of breaking up the fight, there was a dark-colored sedan also involved in the incident. as that dark colored sedan left, there were shots fired. >> reporter: students immediately panicking.

one of the bullets hitting a staff member. the school immediately put on lockdown. the chief says three people got into a dark-colored getaway car. he believes they are not students. the district superintendent would not confirm the staff member's identity, but there was an outpouring of concern from friends and students who say the person shot was football defensive coordinator joe pastrana known as coach joe. >> there, he potentially saved a child's life. >> reporter: the superintendent was asked if all protocols were followed and if parents should feel their kids are safe on campus. >> in terms of what went wrong, i'd have to challenge that. we responded very strongly in the safeguarding of our students. >> reporter: the chief confirmed there have been other shootings in the area calling gun violence a public health crisis. >> that was an act committed by people who do not value human life, and it needs to stop. enough is enough.

our children should feel safe when they come to school. >> reporter: valley high will have extra security and counselors to help deal with the shooting. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." also in the north bay a 4.4 earthquake startled residents last my. you can see from the video people certainly felt it. this is how it looked. a woman and her dog headed outside as the quake rattled her home and knocked things over. at a liquor store, bottles fell it the ground and rattled on the shelves there. similar scenes playing out across sonoma county. the fire department was flooded with calls about gas leaks and fire alarms going off and people getting stuck in elevators. it happened two miles north of santa rosa just before 6:39 last night. you can see how far it was felt, ripple effect. "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney talks with people who were out and about when the quake hit.

>> reporter: this is how it looked when the quake hit. the dog startled. things started falling down. people running for cover. smith says her house is right on top of the fault line that gave way. >> it kind of felt like a car hit the building, but it kept rumbling. >> reporter: jesse mendoza was working at this gas station on mendocino avenue and ran outside to safety. >> it was over before it started. it gave us a chance to come back in. as soon as we came back in, it started shaking again and right back out the door. >> reporter: chris and charissa were having sushi in downtown santa rosa when things got weird. >> things started to shake. i thought potentially a car had driven into the building. >> someone behind us shouted, should we get out of the building? i was like, we probably should. it started shaking again. >> reporter: a campus market on mendocino avenue, lots of liquor bottles came flying off shelves

move to westminster hall. this is an elaborate procession that will include king charles and other members of the royal family. there will be a short service inside the hall followed by five days of her lying in state. at one point members of the royal family are expected to stand guard around the coffin, a tradition known as the vigil of princes. >> come to pay my respects in my own way, lay some flowers, have a few moments to myself. >> leaders from around the world are expected to be in london for the queen's funeral on monday including president biden. the "today" show will have live team coverage as hundreds of thousands wait to pay their respects to queen elizabeth at westminster. the coverage begins for you at about 6:15 this morning with a special report.
