hi, everyone, i'm kate know. >> and i'm aaron gilchrist. "nbc news daily" starts right now. ♪♪ today, friday september 16th, 2022. lost in america. dozens of migrants are spending a second day in an unfamiliar place after being sent there by two governors. the effort to help them as more migrants could be coming. bracing for fiona, the tropical storm headed now for the caribbean, we will have the updated track for you and whether it could hit the east coast. a final tribute, last minute

migrants with more sustainable accommodations, it's been really a chaotic 48 hours for these migrants, when they arrived here on the tiny island of martha's vineyard, now they are back on the road, we witnessed them get on to the buses to first drive and then ferry over to the joint base of cape cod. a couple of things that really stood out to the governor about picking this location, it's a designated emergency shelter, it has experience of hosting former hurricane victims and you compare that to the church grounds here, they had no idea that people had -- were going to be coming to the islands of martha's vineyard and so they sprung into action, really getting these migrants started with so many of those critical items before they are now idkat >> julia, you have some exclusive reporting i understand on growing friction between the white house and department of homeland security officials about immigration and what they should be doing.
12:03 pm
what have you learned? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. we've already seen increasing border numbers this month, kate, usually that happens as the temperatures fall from the warm summer months, but also given what emilie reported on about migrants going to washington, d.c., new york city, chicago and elsewhere after being sent by republican governors it's ratcheting up tensions on the white house to have more of a response to immigration. dhs officials have presented a range of options to white house officials including something that actually looks very similar to what these republican governors are doing, being able to alleviate some overcrowding on the border by sending migrants into interior cities, but the difference in this plan is that they would actually work with federal partners, give shelters advanced notice, be able to get all the basic needs of these migrants met and have advanced coordination when they arrive in these cities. they're talking about larger cities like los angeles and denver, houston, places that can better accommodate them while they're temporarily sheltered
12:04 pm
and could find their way on to live with family members as migrants typically do when they're coming and awaiting court dates. so far the white house is resisting that and dhs officials are starting to push for the white house to allow them to do more now because they think the numbers will continue to rise. >> julia ainsley and emilie ikeda, thank you so much. the justice department is expected to appeal the decision appointing a special master to review documents taken from mar-a-lago. federal judge aileen cannon named a senior new york judge to that role, also denied the doj request to regain access to some of those classified materials. i want to bring in nbc news justice reporter ryan riley now and white collar defense attorney sara azari. ryan, how much of an impact does this ruling really have on the justice department's investigation at this point? >> on the broader investigation it's definitely going to kickback a while but i think that the focus potential for doj on this appeal could be on those classified documents, that
