westbound, that commute is still moving smoothly. you will see westbound your commute is just fine. eastbound it is jamming up off the high rise. the dumbarton bridge is a good alternate for you. come over to this area off 280 and to the san mateo bridge. we don't have an eta. traffic is looking pretty smooth. the green highlighting shows you where it might be damp and there may still be activity. >> we did have showers move in early and and still have plenty of that left on radar. this will be the last of the lingering storm system. a couple of showers pushing through san francisco right now as well as san mateo and rain in fremont. a mix of sun and clouds through 11:00 a.m. temperatures begin to bump up into the 70s.

traveling along oakland shower activity through 9:00 a.m. i will tell you more about the expected forecast into the weekend coming up in a few minimum. new overnight a warning on the peninsula after not one but two mountain lions were spotted hunting down a deer. a resident saw it from his backyard about 1:00 in the morning and san mateo police are now warning people in the area to stay inside their homes. some new video from the neighborhood. the resident scared off the lion using a flashlight but the deer did not survive. officers later located two cats but they did not euthanize because the animals posed no danger at the time. breaking overnight vladimir putin upping the ante making the call for hundreds of thousands of reinforcements and referencing russia's nuclear capability.

this follows a string of defeats on the battlefield and new blame on nape toe for russia's misfires. closer to home president biden will address the united nations this morning hoping to galvanize more help for ukraine. "today in the bay's" drew petrimoulx is live in washington following those new developments overnight. good morning, drew. >> reporter: good morning. this is the first time in three years the u.n. has held this meeting face-to-face. it's an opportunity for president biden and global leaders to address crisis on multiple fronts from the war in ukraine to rising prices. >> i have a number of meetings while i'm there. >> reporter: president biden will address the u.s. general assembly continues on the war in ukraine. >> will make a call to the world to continue to stand against the naked aggression we've seen these past several months. >> reporter: the speech comes as russia mobilizes additional troops for the war and as votes

are scheduled in ukrainian territory seized by russia since its february invasion, a major concern for u.s. officials. >> if these referenda proceed and they annex the territory, the united states will never, never, recognize it. >> reporter: the impacts of the war are being felt far beyond europe. the war is triggering a food crisis especially in developing countries and in spiking the cost of everyday goods in others putting pressure on the u.s. and its allies that are supply war aid to ukraine. >> we have to stay the course to support ukraine and because what we see now is the most dangerous times we have seen the second world war. >> reporter: trying to garner support from world leaders including those on the fence. >> we have encouraged other countries to rethink their neutral positions. there are still others who

believe it is important for them to remain neutral. >> reporter: the president and his counterparts from across the globe gather at u.n. headquarters in new york. russian president vladimir putin is threatening a nuclear response. new this morning a senior administration official tells nbc news it is likely president biden will include in his speech a response to putin's threat to use nuclear weapons and his announcement of new troop movements. reporting from washington, i'm drew petrimoulx. back to you. >> thank you, drew. happening today the federal reserve is set to meet and raise rates by three-quarters of a point for the third consecutive time to 3% or it will hike them by an unprecedented one full percentage point to 3.25%. but what happens after that is anybody's guess. joining us now is scott

anderson, the chief economist and executive vice president at bank of the west. scott, thanks so much for joining us. let's get right to it. first, break down what is expected today and is this going to be an even bigger interest rate hike than originally expected? >> thanks for having me on, marcus. yeah, the fed has more work to do to bring inflation under control. we expect another big rate hike from the fed today, another 75 basis points and probably another big hike in november and december. maybe not as big as three-quarters of a percentage point increase we're going to see today but maybe another half a percentage point in november and another in december so the fed funds rate, the short-term rates, are likely to be above 4% by the end of the year. >> are we expecting this to inch even closer to that possibility of a recession? >> yeah, the risk is quite high

going from a boom situation raising the risk of a bust. the fed is squarely focused on bringing inflation down even if it causes pain to the economy which probably means some layoffs and probably an increase in the unemployment rate next year. we are on recession watch as the fed tries to battle prices lower. but we're all going to see higher prices in the grocery store, if we go out to eat, go see a movie. it will be a push and pull here as the fed tries to bring down prices and we expect to see more weakening. >> scott always gives great information. we talked about so much during that interview. you can watch it all. go to our website, nbcbayarea.com. new details on a late-night fire that destroyed a warehouse in san leandro.
