good morning, it is saturday, october 1st. we are taking a live look outside across oakland on a cloudy morning. thank you so much for starting your new month with us.

i'm kira klapper. meteorologist vianey arana joins us with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. it doesn't look so nice right now, but it sounds like we have a beautiful day ahead. >> it will feel more like fall, which is good. we were pretty warm to start. we are seeing the cloud cover, though, of course, and especially around the coastline. let's see how our temperatures are out the door. morgan hill 54, san martin 55, san francisco in those 50s, and if you take a look at the 24-hour temperature change, so not a lot of change just yet. you'll notice the cooling a little better into the afternoon, but you will notice some areas of fog. so this gray that you see here is that cloud cover. we're going to get some breaks in the sunshine by the afternoon, and let me just kind of give you an idea of what we're tracking into the next couple of hours. by 11:00, 12:00, comfortable 70s. so we'll be more seasonable, which means more normal for the month of october. and then we have just a couple of changes heading into the

week. i'll guide you through that in my full forecast. we begin with breaking news on the peninsula where a street is now reopened as police investigate a hit and run in typically quiet burlingame. here's a live picture of california drive and oak grove avenue. we have video just into our newsroom that shows the investigation overnight. burlingame police tell us around 10:30 last night a toyota prius hit two people in the crosswalk. one of the victims died. the other is in critical condition. police say the driver did return to the scene and is now cooperating with the investigation. we continue to follow violence in the streets of oakland where the latest, a triple shooting happened last night. police are investigating the shooting on international boulevard near 9th avenue. this is in little saigon. it happened just before 8:30 last night. paramedics rushed two victims to the hospital, a third went on

their own. we are told all three are in stable condition. so far police have not given any information on a shooter, nor a motive. a string of violence yesterday in oakland actually began earlier in the afternoon in the laurel district where two people were shot on master son street near 38th avenue around 2:15 yesterday afternoon. just a couple of blocks from laurel elementary school, no word on the condition of those victims. and this morning anxiety and fear as there are still no arrests following a mass shooting at an oakland school. six people were injured. school leaders are vowing to move forward to make students comfortable as they prepare to return to campus. bay tech's charter school principal cecily frost was at king of state's complex in oakland yesterday. it was her first time there since wednesday's mass shooting. she said seeing chaos frozen in time with books and computers

and backpacks left behind while student were scrambling for safety is motivating her call for action. >> i don't need talking about it. i need movement for this healing for our community. this has got to be the last time. >> on wednesday six people were shot by an unknown number of gunmen. out of the six victims, two are still in the hospital. later today, frost will be back at the school to give personal belongings back to students. it has not been decided when the school will reopen. turning now to the destruction of hurricane ian after it made its second u.s. landfall in south carolina. the remnants of the hurricane are now bringing heavy rain to the carolinas and virginia. the storm cut a path of destruction across florida before taking aim at the carolinas. at this moment, the death toll stands at 34, but that number is expected to go up.

we have a live look for you at myrtle beach, orida. you can see the camera moving around from the wind. it is calm, though, right now. nbc's chris pollone has the very latest from fort myers, florida. >> this morning in florida, more than 1.3 million people are without power. that's a big improvement over yesterday. nbc news has confirmed at least 34 deaths from ian. it is the one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the u.s. it blasted the carolinas yesterday after cutting a path of destruction through florida. >> ian made its second u.s. landfall in south carolina bringing rough surf and hurricane force winds and flooding to downtown charleston. after seeing what happened in florida, local officials had warned people to stay home. >> and for the most part, folks did that. >> yeah, this area got it. >> reporter: in florida the scope of ian's destruction is becoming more clear. >> it's like a war zone right now. >> yep. >> the whole island. >> reporter: friday people left hard hit fort myers beach with everything they owned in

suitcases. search and rescue teams continued plucking stranded people from their homes and boats and taking them to safety. a view from above showed homes on sanibel island cut off from the mainland. howard simon and his wife beth retired there three years ago. >> we don't know when we can ever get back there to see how much damage. we have put everything we have, love and care and whatever small treasure we have into this home. >> in orlando, people are salvaging what they can from homes flooded by ian's torrent of rain if they can get to this. >> it's like the entire world just came crashing down on us. >> president biden said help from the federal government is on the way. >> i'm committed and the country's committed to do whatever it takes as long as it takes. we're going to be there. >> reporter: the first steps of recovery, which could take months or even years. the remnants of ian are now hundreds of miles away from southwest florida, but the storm

is still having a profound im on the state. last night florida state police had to shut down a ten-mile stretch of i-75 between here and tampa because rivers and streams are now starting to flood. in fort myers, chris pollone, now back to you. >> thank you, chris. only on nbc bay area, the daughter of an asian elderly man who died in a senseless attack is talking with us about today's street renaming in his honor. sonora lane will be renamed. grandpa vicha as he was affectionately known died in early 2021, nine days after his attacker violently pushed him to the ground. a surveillance camera captured the attack. the man accused in the attack, antwan watson is still awaiting trial, and ousted d.a. ches sabu dean never officially charged him with a hate crime. grandpa vicha's daughter hopes

the renaming bringing more attention to anti-asian violence. >> we want to remind new generations to know about this renamed, how to stop the asian hate against the aapi elderly. >> you can watch the entire interview on our website. head to the local section on our front page. this morning police in the south bay are hoping you can help find a hit and run driver who hit and killed a man earlier this year. take a good look at this picture. the person driving this early 2000s green toyota tacoma hit and killed a man. it happened on january 7th near center road and capital expressway. the man died a week later. if you think you recognize the truck or know the driver, call san jose police. a mystery on the outskirts of the bay area. there has been a sudden series of unsolved murders in stockton.

five homicides in three months. now the police chief is asking families to stick together, especially when it's dark outside. nbc bay area stephanie magallon has more on a person of interest who police say may have information on one or all five of the killings. >> five serial killings within three months, all of them connected. the victims are men shot and killed in isolated areas of stockton and in the cover of darkness. >> the community's grieving, the community's scared. >> reporter: police say there are no witnesses and no videos showing the crimes. only this picture of a man or woman investigators believe is a person of interest. investigators say there's a pattern. >> some are close to apartment buildings. they're overshadowed by trees. there are places where there's not a lot of surveillance cameras which means, you know,

either this person or persons are very lucky choosing where they're going. >> the homicides took place between july 8th and september 27th of this year. four out of five of the victims are hispanic men, including 21-year-old jonathan hernandez and 354-year-old lorenzo lopez. >> he was there for me. he was watching out for me. >> lopez's brother tells us lorenzo was a transient and believes he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> whoever is doing this,
