video without a warrant. but is this the start of a slippery slope? and liftoff as spacex rocket is headed to the space station in a mission of firsts. how the diverse crew is making history today. we begin this hour with breaking news out of florida. president biden and the first lady getting a firsthand look at the historic destruction from hurricane ian. >> the president surveyed the damage from above as today marks one week now since that massive storm struck florida. today the president extended federal funds to help the state for another 30 days. >> president biden and first lady met with governor ron desantis. the president thanked and honored the efforts of first responders. leading us off this hour, nbc news correspondent jesse kirsch and liz mclaughlin. jesse, let's start with you. what have we heard from the president so far this afternoon? >> reporter: we know that the president is on the ground, has been there, we saw earlier that

he took a helicopter ride in marine one and saw the motorcade coming by where we are and there were several electrical workers standing there watching this go by, bringing into context where we are. this is still very much a scene of recovery. and we know according to the press pool that the president met with the governor as well as with the two senators for the state of florida. he's here according to the white house to express support for the people of florida. we know the federal government and the state have been working together throughout the week, long process that has unfolded in the run-up to and the aftermath of hurricane ian's case. >> i'm curious about the need for supplies there and how significant that still is. what are the residents saying about what they need the most right now? >> reporter: so short time ago, i spoke with a representative from one of the utility providers here in this region. he told me they're still looking

at more than 100,000 customers that do not have power. so one of the things you can't have, you don't have power is a way to keep food cool at home in a refrigerator, right? one thing that our team heard from is people are trying to get ice to keep their food cold. also, it is pretty hot out. it is sunny, there has been limited shade, the breeze has come through. it is warm out here in this part of southwest florida. if you don't have air conditioning, don't have a way to cool off with a cold drink that is going to be a challenge for people who are able to get in their homes right now. there are people who are still waiting to get into their homes at this point. a lot still needed here. and we know there are people who remain in shelters, people who are constantly gathering supplies and food to support this community very much in need. >> jesse kirsch in florida. thank you. let's bring in liz mclaughlin now. it has been a week as we mentioned since ian's landfall there. the residents are starting to return to sanibel island.

we have seen how badly devastated that area is. what are you hearing from people about making that return to the island? >> reporter: residents are heart broken. the only way to and from are private boats. you see me the dock, they rebuilt, so boats can get them there, but not to stay. just to be able to look at their homes or what used to be their homes. some wiped off the map. a tranquil community that■z was supposed to start in a month from now, the economy relies so much on tourism. it is not just property the people are using but their livelihood. >> i understand the reality. i tell one of my, should i look for another job? i said, we have to look for a ci to new start away from the next

inevitable storm. but some are hoping to rebuild. they just are saying they need the help of president biden, the help of the federal government to be able to do so. >> liz mclaughlin down there for us. thank you so much. actor alec baldwin settled a wrongful death lawsuit. the 42-year-old halyna hutchins was shot last year when baldwin accidentally fired a live round. the director of the film was also wounded in the incident. maya egan is joining us now. hutchins' family filed this lawsuit in february. what do we know about the settlement here from baldwin and his team? >> reporter: baldwin and his team are saying they are glad this settlement has been reached but they're still mourning the loss of their colleagues. they said in a statement, we're grateful to everyone who contributed to this resolution of this tragic and painful situation. baldwin maintained he did not pull the trigger in the fatal shooting that rocked hollywood and raised concerns about

weapons on movie sets. we also learned that matthew hutchins, the widower, will be an executive producer on the film, and receive a portion of the profits. the "rust" team says it is planning to resume filming in january. >> this was a civil case. authorities in new mexico are still investigating what happened on that movie set. do we know what today's settlement has any impact on potential criminal charges here? >> reporter: it will not impact any criminal charges. arizona state prosecutors said on august 30th that their office was prepared to press crimina a people involved with this incident. and as you mentioned, this investigation is still ongoing. so we'll be sure to keep an eye on any new developments. >> maya, thank you. the back and forth over documents taken from mar-a-lago now involves the supreme court. former president donald trump is asking the court to let the special master in the case review classified documents seized by the fbi in august. last month, a federal appeals

court limited the review to nonclassified material. the justice department has until tuesday afternoon to respond. trump's request does not stop the doj from using the documents in its criminal investigation. it was a mission of firsts for nasa and spacex. four new crew members en route
