looming, a major fire on the bridge linking russia to crimea. the blaze visible for miles. reports of a huge explosion at 6:00 a.m. local time. russian authorities say it was a truck bomb that caused the blast on the strategic bridge to russia from ukraine. it is opened by president putin in 2018 after russia annexed crimea. the attack coming a day after putin turned 70. he has no cause for celebration. it is another setback for the russian leader who is drafting hundreds of thousands of rusian men according to officials to fight on the streets. on the streets of moscow today, most were reluctant to talk. >> how do you feel about vladimir putin? >> i'm out of politics. >> are you worried? anxious in these times? >> mostly for my close friends

and parents and brother. >> how do you feel about president putin? >> i think i can't answer you the question. >> you don't want to answer that question. >> reporter: overnight, more russian shelling around the key cities of kharkiv and zaporizhzhia. and volodymyr zelenskyy saying he liberated more areas this week alone. and under pressure, the white house reassuing america has seen no change in the nuclear posture by russia. the private warning from president biden that president putin's nuclear threats were not joking. still making global headlines. guys, in the comments by president biden, he also said he is trying to figure out what president putin's offramp is. the explosion on the bridge is the attack on the bridge which further limits president putin's options.

an adviser to president volodymyr zelenskyy describing it as the beginning. guys. >> increasingly tense situation. keir simmons, thank you. >> let's bring in retired admiral james stavridis. he is our chief international security and diplomacy aanalyst. good morning to you. i want to ask this. the risk of nuclear armageddon right now is highest since the cuban missile crisis in 60 years. is that your assessment of the situation? >> there is good news and less good news here. the less good news is yeah, we are closer to a potential use of a nuclear weapon. i, for one, would believe far more likely it would be a smaller nuclear device. i think the good news here is that the west is prepared for this in terms of signaling.

that's what the president was doing yesterday to president putin that we have many options that we can respond if he there essentially zero percent chance of an exchange here. putin is not reaching for the lever for the apocalypse. he knows that is the end of russia and the world. tactically, we can respond in the 10% range. yes, it is all concerning. >> certainly, admiral, we know putin is facing pressure. the comments by president biden. he is facing pressure from his inner circle. what is his off ramp? >> unclear at this point. certainly the closest you could construct of an off-ramp would be look at the deal with russia and ukraine a few months ago to

get grain out of ukraine. those were talks facilitated by the turkish president and supervised by the head of the united nations secretary-general. you could see after the winter, kristen, both sides feeling as though, gosh, we have need to somehow step back from the apocalypse here. the brink of war -- of a big war. will that happen? hard to say, but there is always a potential for negotiations. probably after the winter is when we will see that. that is the only off ramp. >> admiral, it is not just russia, but north korea is a concern. renewed concern with six missile launches in the last couple weeks. how concerned should the u.s. be about that threat from north korea? >> similarly, i think it is unlikely that kim jong-un is going to wake up on tuesday and actually deploy a nuclear device. however, peter, we should be

prepared for him to conduct a nuclear test probably underground. perhaps out at sea. he is someone who is seeking attention in all the wrong ways and i think that's worth focusing on. i do have to make a comment about the boy band in korea. let's not forget elvis pressly stepped up during the cold war. >> that's right. admiral, nice to see you. thanks for your time. >> thanks. now to several new twists in the most closely watched senate race of the mid-term elections. overnight, georgia republican senate candidate herschel walker speaking out to nbc news and standing by the claims he did not know an ex-girlfriend had an abortion more than a decade ago. this is the same woman who says walker wanted her to have a second abortion years later. she refused.

nbc's ali raffa is following the latest for us. >> reporter: kristen, good morning. demartin control the senate by the thinnest of margins. this could come down to the peach state race from too close to call to roild in allegations. this morning, all eyes on georgia. the crucial senate race between herschel walker and democratic senator raphael warnock in controversy. after allegations by the daily beast that walker paid for a former girlfriend's abortion in 2009. and then walker pressured the same woman to have an abortion two years later, but she refused. walker repeatedly denying both claims. >> i'll not back down. the stakes are too high.

>> reporter: the former football star confirmed that his wife and woman making allegations that the woman and wife were in contact friday morning. walker sharing copies of the text exchange with nbc news and saying, quote, i'm not saying she did or didn't have one. i'm saying i don't know anything about that. i don't know. walker telling nbc this was the first time the woman ever mentioned the abortion to him or his wife. the woman showed the new york times and daily beast the copy of the receipt from the atlanta clinic. the get well card from the former football star. we should know we have not seen this documentation. walker telling nbc news, i don't remember any card or check or anything. i was dating her. i could have sent money or a card, but not for the reasons she is saying. despite the spectacle, most

republicans are backing herschel walker. >> herschel walker will win the race. this is an effort for democrats to hold on power. >> reporter: and frustrations only grow. >> even the most staunch republicans are rattled by the flow of information. >> reporter: just 32 days before voters have their say. walker doesn't have any plans this weekend to meet with voters. ultimately the choice is theirs. republicans here tell me they don't think this controversy will have impact on this senate race. democrats say this is another reason walker is not fit for office. kristen and peter. >> allie raffa, thank you. let's move to the economy and another week of turmoil on wall street. the markets taking another dive on friday after what should have been good news with positive jobs report. nbc's priscilla thompson is in new york this morning. priscilla, why was the reaction so negative? >> reporter: peter, it is

because the positive jobs report could be a sign of more economic pain ahead. to quote a classic, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. this isn't a tale of two cities. it's a tale of two realities. on one hand, a promising new jobs reports. unemployment at 3.5%. a half century low. 236,000 jobs added. and yet what would normally be good news, sent the stock market tumbling. >> why is that? >> the fed has been raising rates in hopes of slowing the economy. with so many businesses still hiring, that means the economy isn't really slowing that quickly. it is likely going to mean the fed will continue to raise rates. when they raise rates, the market doesn't like it because it costs big business more money to operate. >> reporter: the dow dropped more than 600 points friday. the nasdaq closed 3% lower. that reality so much more than

massacre. in florida this morning, thousands of residents of fort myers beach are still waiting to see if their homes survived hurricane ian with no return date in sight. the mayor of the town said no one will be allowed until the emergency services teams finished search for injured or dead. officials in florida updated the death toll overnight. now reporting 94 storm-related deaths so far. ian is the third deadliest hurricane to hit the u.s. with now at least 100 people killed across three states. >> the president says it could be years to rebuild. now a check of the forecast. let's turn to somara theodore for that. somara, a lot of the country waking up to a chill. >> kristen and peter, we are not talking sweater weather. we have to pull out the winter coats. 65 million people from omaha to waterloo and nashville and

cincinnati. freeze watches and freeze warnings. take a look at what they are walking out the door. waterloon the 20s. 28 degrees. chicago at 38 on that morning jog. down in cincinnati, the dog walk is around 35 degrees there. out to pittsburgh right now, we're in the low 40s. as far as the east coast goes, not as cold. we are going to struggle to make it into the 60s today. highs still falling about 12 below the average out in pittsburgh in the 50s. in the nation's capital, 64 degrees. tomorrow, the chill stays in place. we slowly see the numbers rising. upper 50s and low 60s throughout the east coast. we will see temperatures warming up. here is a look at what's coming at the top of the week. we're headed back in the 60s. cincinnati, hold tight. you may have to pull out the winter coat. we are headed back to sweater weather by wednesday. close to 80 degrees. raleigh in the 70

doctors warning this year's flu season could be more severe than the past few years. that is due to the general return to normalcy after two years of covid. we have dr. natalie azar with us. dr. azar, good to see you. break this down for us. why are doctors concerned this year will be more severe than the past? >> i know, guys. good morning. it is always difficult to predict what kind of a flu season we will have here in the united states, but experts often look to what's going on in the southern hemisphere to give us a little bit of a lens into our season. unfortunately, and particularly australia had the worst season its had in the last five years. it peaked early and it peaked quickly. we typically peak between december to february here in this country. that is why experts are concerned if we peak earlier, we could see flu circulating in the next couple weeks.

guys. >> dr. azar, with so many folks locked in their homes over the last couple years, that meant they were neglecting the flu shot. who is most at risk this season? >> that's right, peter. you know, after you get your shot, just with the covid vaccine, it takes two weeks for the antibodies to build up. the cdc says by the end of october, they would like to see everybody get vaccinated. who is most at risk? it is a group we have been talking about for many, many years now. 65 and older. children under the age of 2. persons who are pregnant, obese, immune owe compromised. those are the folks we worry about. a survey said half of people were planning on getting the flu shot which is consistent with the last number of years. 1 in 5 at risk are planning at getting it this year. >> dr. azar, i spoken to so many

people who want to get the second covid booster and flu shot as well. what is the guidance there? should you space them out? any reason not to get them the same day? >> you may recall when the covid vaccine rolled out, we wanted the vaccines to be separated by two weeks and make sure we had a clear understanding and perception of the safety of the covid vaccine. that is no longer the case. you can get the flu shot on the same day as the covid vaccine. you can get them in the same arm or different arms. that's up to you. you can go and get a 2-for-1. go get it today. >> we are boosted and we are getting our flu shot family field trip today as well. that should go over well with the girls who just heard that. what about those who are covid fatigued? the message to those americanses is what? >> i understand it. we all feel that way.
